- Robbed at a petrol station after sailing to Indonesia - Ep 182
Bluewater sailing to a new country is always very exciting. The sights, the sounds and the challenges of discovering a new culture are balanced by the trials and tribulations of the checking in process, which Rob successfully completed without the aid of an agent. We were also confronted with the language barrier when Rob experienced a somewhat underhand but obvious scam that appears to take place at the petrol pumps here in Indonesia.
Thank you for helping keep us afloat and supporting the creative process. You can be part of the crew for less than the price of a coffee.

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

This ep is doing well Rach!!
Relieved to hear you were only robbed by a criminally set petrol pump meter! I was worried you had been in a mugging. I guess it was a mugging by a petrol pump! Enjoy Indonesia! Love to you all. ❤
Thanks Rob, yeah it was the daylight robbery type that got us. Thankfully better than the alternative
One of the best episodes so far! Loving stepping into this new country.
It's a wonderful place and the people here are so welcoming. Thank you!
It is so fun to see you guys adventuring in a new country. It seems like Asia has a real problem with people's trash ending up in the ocean, so sad.
It is sad especially in such a paradise. Education!
Hi Rob & Rachel, thanks so much for trying to help Craig, the Kiwi stranded in Kupang on his boat Whakaari. He’s now in Dili and preparing to make his way to Darwin in a couple of days’ time. He is finishing the last leg of his journey started 10 years ago circumnavigating the Pacific Ring of Fire, starting in Panama. PM me if you want his blog site, He’s from Cambridge and was a keen rower, back in the day…shame you guys didn’t get more time for a chat, I’m sure you would have a lot in common. Loving the videos! Keep up the good work. Kia Kaha ❤ Sandy
Hi Sandy so nice of you to reach out to us. It was great to meet Craig. I hung out at dinner with him that evening but there was a lot going on and we didn't really get to talk in depth. Would love to have heard more about his adventures. Didn't realise he rowed. What a character. Are you based in the US?
@@TheCruisingKiwis Oh that’s great that you did get a chance to talk. I’m his girlfriend in Rotorua, I’m heading to Darwin at the end of this month to catch up with him. Fingers crossed it will be an uneventful trip to Darwin and he can then pick up new mainsail and do some more repairs.
It’s starting to get interesting 👍love Indonesia 🇮🇩
New country, new culture. What's not to love😊
Good job, and what a chore!, on your check in to Indonesia, Rob! Another beautifully produced video, Rachel!👏🏻
Thank you Mari, it's was all interesting for us even if at times somewhat challenging for a variety of reasons.
This is what I have waited for - seeing y'all (esp Rob) interacting with other cultures. LOVEd this episode! I hope you go to some more remote villages along the way.
That's certainly the plan Ainslie, thanks. The more remote the better.
We loved this style of video. Its a mix between your sailing and travel vlog. We lived in Bali for 6 months in a local community and spent a lot of time at local markets.
Oh where are you now? I guess moved on from there. We'll be passing through Bali.
@@TheCruisingKiwis we live near Dampier WA. Last weekend we had a 2m saltwater croc hanging out at the Dampier foreshore moorings. All the beaches had to be closed.
@@northwestandbeyond1477 crikey! We love dampier and the Karijini was sublime. Did you see that episode?ua-cam.com/video/23j8tglz9bc/v-deo.html
Another groovy episode. Love following your sailing adventures.
Thanks MA🙂
Rachel, it was very noble of you to 'take one for the team' (the taste test) ! Hurrah!!
I could happily have stopped at the betel nut which, though hard enough to break your teeth, had no flavour so was relatively inoffensive. The green stick and the lime powder were the straw that broke the camels back and had me retching.
As always, a wonderful video!
Thank you doc.
Cheers guys! 😊
Thanks Trev
Kupang is a typical regional non touristy town/city in Indonesia, and the fuel scam is also common. But such a great introduction to Indonesia. Also when we were there anchored by the creek where Teddy's Bar used to be, we all saw a large crocodile swim past close to shore in broad daylight.
When were you in Kupang Catherine? When customs visited the boat they told us there had been a three metre croc in the anchorage only a month before we arrived.
Asia's trash problem is an ABSOLUTE DISGRACE!! Loving how you embrace culture guys. Can't wait to see upcoming episodes. Stay safe.
The rubbish is shocking. Unfortunately the locals don't seem upset by it. We have witnessed people throwing their trash directly into the water.
I met a sailor who had crossed to the Azores bringing a boat from South Africa. They had put all their garbage into purple bags for correct disposal ashore. They paid to have them collected to be dumped ashore. They witnessed a truck dumping the bags in the sea.
@@philgray1023 that's horrendous. Assume much of the trash from the island went with it?
@@TheCruisingKiwis I guess that was the process back then. Hope it has changed. I've seen literally ship loads of trash on some islands in the Hebrides in 2015. The Islanders do not have the resources to deal with it. You would need barges and a sizeable workforce to clean it up. It is swept in by the sea and is stuff like refrigerators and massive commercial fishing gear, nets and ropes that are in the region of 100mm diameter. We even found large expired epirbs that were clearly from commercial vessels because these are way too big for recreational vessels. If you found one you would be concerned, but when you find 5 with the labels removed you know it is dumping.
@@philgray1023 well its no different here. We've sailed passed collectively tons of rubbish and much of it obviously recent ejecting from craft and shore. Heartbreaking.
Best of luck to you all....take care and stay safe!
Thanks JC 😊

Hey thanks Rob. Just back on coverage and yours was the first comment to read making me miss home despite our adventures. Maybe not enough to stop what we're doing though!🙂
Thanks team, that was so good
Thank you Pannie!
Kiwi's to the rescue. It's great to be able to help other people and typical of your family to try to do so. We are destroying our planet with waste it is soul destroying to see all the rubbish floating in the oceon. It's also great to see another culture and food but you would not get me eating that stuff early on in the vlog. The chicken looked ok and was very fresh however. What a load of trailing about Rob had to do at the start but he looks pretty good in a motor cycle helmet. lol. Thanks for sharing your travels with us all. Keep well and safe. James.
The rubbish is bad, real bad. But the people are wonderful. More educating needed. Craig was towed by the local sea rescue so all good there. Helmet noted - no such thing as helmet hair for me!🙂

Thank you Vern
Poor bloke, traped on a dead boat. Glad you tried to help him, hope everything worked out for him. Different subject, if countries like USA, and other better off countries worked with these smalle countries with trash disposal and rectcling. There would be less in nthe waters. People think cleaning up beachs and oceans makes a difference, (A for effort) but compared to the TONS that go in daily it a small change. So we need to help smaller countries and some more developed , even ourselves to set up programs for better trash disposal. Okay i am off my soap box. Love you guys look forward to your videos every week. Stay healthy.
We do plenty for countries such as this.
@@ThatSandersboy 12 million metric tons each year still going into the oceans, so are we doing plenty?
More plastic in the ocean comes from Indonesia and India than anywhere else6 - together, they contribute more plastic to the world's coastal environments than the next seven countries combined, including the United States, which ranks third on the list
The rubbish on the beaches and in the water is shocking here. Education is the key. We have seen some adds on TV saying put your rubbish in the bin. It's going to take a while for everyone to start playing the game.
I'm so excited that you guys are traveling the world now. I think your channel will explore with all your adventures ahead. 🤠👍
Let's hope you're right Texan
Always interesting to see people's first impressions of life in Indonesia. Its a crazy, dog-eat-dog world but the people really make up for it. Just remember to not take it personally when things work against you and be thankful that you can enjoy this amazing country as a tourist and not have to live here as a poor local. N'joy!
Amen to that. We have found the people to be very welcoming. We love walking the streets just absorbing the culture.
Betel nut is a mild intoxicant popular throughout PNG so I guess it's not surprising to encounter it in Indonesia as well. The white powder is lime which is said to increase the effect of the Betel nut.
I research the betel nut when we got home. I'm glad we didn't eat too much of the lime. Not a great thing to eat. No intoxication for us two amateurs cos we spat it out 🥴
I always get robbed at petrol stations ,it was £86 last time !
For 25 ltr?🙂
I was expecting a video of a masked man with a gun. 🤷🏼♀️ But this was a different kind of “robbery.” 💸
Not all robbers where a mask 😊
After months in the calm western Australia, the busy Indonesia must impact hard. New country, new mood. Enjoy.
It sure is different and we love it!
Wonderful episode! ❤
Thank you Tammy. We are enjoying Indonesia. I just love to walk down the street experiencing the differences to our culture.
I actually got robbed here in the US one time, the gallons were right but the price was counting higher. I always check at the 1 & 10 gallon marks for price. Anyway just happened one time & they refunded me to over charge no questions.
Rob did complain but without the language it was difficult to make his point. The gas station attendants saying its not their fault and the manager conveniantly not around. We are enjoying ourselves nonetheless. This is the thorn on the rose that is Indonesia 😊
Hey guys. Wow, big difference in culture and way of life after 3 years in Aussie. That betel (spelling?) nut didn't look like one of your more enjoyable adventures. But you're now seriously on the trail of Kerry's journey, so it will be good to see where it takes you. I'm a bit in limbo while I get my power issues sorted and get my Jeep sorted so I can sell it.
Sorry to hear you power issues are keeping you from adventuring. Are you still in Tauranga or did you get up to Whangarei for the work?
@@TheCruisingKiwis still in Tauranga. I'm saving other work for further north. I've tied myself to shore power with the Dometic freezer I've bought until I can get itto work
Get it to work on the boat's 12 volt system. Also I need to stay here to sort out the Jeep. Do you still have a sail with Sailbrokers or whatever their name is? I think I'll go and get mine before they start charging storage.

Hi Elizabeth, thank you for your time watching and lovely comment. It's a pleasure to have you join us.
@11:10 Plucky? 😆 I love to see the SV's help another. How did you feel after eating the beetle nut? It's supposed to be like caffeine high. Dear Rob..you need to tend to your hands before you can't. Give them a warm oil soak.
I don't we had the betel nut in our mouths long enough to get the high. Certainly didn't feel anything. The nut was completely tasteless but very hard. It alone will be keeping the dentists thriving in betel nut chewing areas.
Btw what did you see re Rob's hands?
Unfortunately there are scams like that throughout the word. People are being robbed left right and centre even in the western world. Take medical care in the USA for instance or the energy crisis in europe. Its not great, just don't take it personally. Loved the betel nut sampling. Another highly enjoyable episode.
Thanks pumpkin, we absolutely agree. Onwards and upwards. It's unfortunate but not the end of the world.

I think that’s what they used to call good old fashioned daylight robbery 😢 . But some stuff never goes out of fashion. Some of the scenes, paperwork, even short stay visa on arrival prices reminds me of my visits to my brother’s family in Antananarivo, Madagascar. But I can promise you I would not be brave enough to try to make my own way around there on two wheels. Take care!
Madagascar is somewhere we would love to visit. Not sure we'll get the chance on this circumnavigation though.
@@TheCruisingKiwis I bet you would love Madagascar!
In my state of Mississippi there’s always a seal on a gas pump that states the last date inspectors from the agricultural department certified the pump’s calibration. Dispensing less than a full gallon of fuel has been a common cheat since the earliest days of gas stations.
Yeah seems there need to be more of that in indo.
Safe travel
Thank you Wendy😊
Another rich jaunt with you guys (sic semptor...) I've never even seen betel but I could tell by the guy's semi-manic look that he was a user and therefore a seller of betel. What a place! So, you bypassed West Timor? Regards.
Unfortunately because we only have two months in Indo we have had to be really particular with where we go and what we see. It means we will miss so much but thems the breaks
All my plastic jerry's have the 20L mark half way down the Warning word. I can squeeze in 24L. They are Supercheap ones. You know the Aussie car accessory place.
I have another type and it's mark is about 7cm below bottom of filler.
Having filled these jerry cans frequently over the last seven years, I no longer need to look at the 20L level line, I can tell from the fuel level. The pump said 20L but the jerry can never lies 😊
@@TheCruisingKiwis yeah after a while you know where the level is.
Where the Crawdads Sing - my favourite book - !
Yes it's a great story. I think just about everyone has read it. Happy new year to you all.
So, what did happen with that sailor and his vessel? i can not see how anyone would let things get that deplorable.
The Kiwi got towed to harbour by the local coastguard. We met him that evening and he had plans to get the engine going then nurse her up to Dili for some overdue repairs. Don't think he is too big on preventative maintenance.
We renewed our Visa on Arrival (VOA) at Beiltung. A visit to Immigration, then Post Office, back to Immigration on day one, then pick up passports a few days later. Didn't need customs or quarantine. In between we used the agent for shopping, visiting markets, liquor store and lots more. Final bill to be driven around town for a week US$35. Granted our original B211A visas cost the earth when we first entered Indonesia. Good news is that diesel is super cheap in Malaysia (you probably are there by now), bad news is foreigners aren't allowed to buy the government subsidized fuel.
Thanks Terry yeah we cleared out in Belitung and done in a day buzzing around on a scooter. Loved the place. Should have stayed longer but our time was up. Long passage to Malaysia followed.
Please show a map of your route (intended) so those of us who cant quite catch your verbal description can see it on the screen. Please thank you .
Good idea. We don't often talk about where we are going next in a sometime in the future context; it's more a rightio we are now sailing to.... and include a map then.
We are of course doing that for the next episode when we do the actual passage to Ende, Flores. Thanks for watching!
I know who won the ‘face pulling’ contest! 😜😎🐬⚓️🏖🌴☀️🇦🇺

Amazing episode. Do you have starlink connection sailing around in Indonesia?
No we didn't at that time. That was over a year ago but we do have it now.
@@TheCruisingKiwis awesome. is the connection working well when you’re in remote area like Raja?
@HaThuYoga yeah it's pretty amazing world wide.
I think Rob missed someone in the shoutouts haha
Sorry Sausage an error on my part! Thank you!!!🙂😂
That white powder. So the woody bit was the beetlenut. What was the powder and how did the stuff affect you??
The Woody bit was tastless and tooth breaking hard. The green thing I guess is to add flavour and the white powder is lime to intensify the high. We didn't have it in our mouths long enough to get any effect except the slightly red colouring to out teeth and gums.
Betelnut is already in NZ, it's illegal to sell here though. Has big links to oral cancer.
Gosh didn't know know that. I suspect in moderation, like anything, it probably has positive properties in it but for the addictive component....
Rob Robbed
Haha yeah about right
The white powder that you ate with the Betel nut is actually dry slaked lime. Selamat jalan.
Nom nom!
After 20 years sailing in indo. The officials have stayed exactly the same. They always suck. If you want to get it over with in 1 or 2 days you got to play the game. If you dont play it takes longer.
Of the five boats that were in the anchorage at the same time as us Rob was the only one who went through the checking in process without an agent and everyone, more or less, took the same amount of time. The customs officials who visited the boat say they are looking to make the whole process digital.
@@TheCruisingKiwis They made the yachters online, but it still takes a long time in each government building. Its the indo way. Maybe covid will spark the digital revolutiin in indo. But i doubt it. The check out is when they try to get youre money. Wait for it.

You need to understand the difference of measurements between areas of the world in Europe you have Imperial in Australia and other English-speaking places you have metric in Indonesia you have Indonesian standards of measurement
So there is Imperial, Metric and Local? 😁🤣
Well to me about that a liter is a leader any place you go I cannot believe there are different standards in different countries on a liter of fuel that's ridiculous
So the L at the petrol pump stands for local not litre. 20 local = 18 litres. Ok now I understand 😉.

I actually went on the warpath not too long ago about a gasoline pump discrepancy. I filled up my pickup tank, but the gauge only rose slightly!
After I went back and tested it with a can, I was eating some humble pie…….a mouse had partially eaten through the wire that goes to the gauge 🤦♂️
Still, if I HAD been ripped off, that pump would not have remained open for use. I could have shut down the entire station if necessary.
So the Indonesian Government……What the hell are they playing? Patty cake with criminality, eh?
I shouldn't laugh but that would have been rather entertaining to witness. Like covid it's endemic in Indo.

No. We are using up savings rapidly. Earn approximately $100/week. Hoping for breakthrough 2023 or will need to look at other options.
Why woyou go to a place where they don’t want you there, if take that long, please this is stupid.
I don't think it's a case of them not wanting us, all the different agencies you attend to clear customs are very welcoming. It's just a very slow system that has been working this way for many decades. Lots of paper stamping to keep lots of people employed.
No sex before marriage now in Indonesia. Includes tourists, 1 year in jail penalty. Terrible country to visit, ruled by religion.
I think they'll find that a very difficult rule to police in areas such as Bali. Unfortunately lots of countries have terrible leaders inacting pointless rules. Thank goodness that your day to day Indonesian is very welcoming. We are loving the place.
You get brainwash twisted news by western media, the law apply in 2025 for cheater/homewrecker, only if your legal spouse or parents report it to the police due to affair/cheating, or if it wasn't consent sexual relationship or manipulation including illegal polygamy practice, if not then nothing happen.
@@houseoftyrell1544 So all the Western media that states "Indonesia’s parliament has overhauled the country’s criminal code to outlaw sex outside marriage" is wrong and the Indonesian government is not suing these Western papers for being wrong?
@@houseoftyrell1544 it always interests me how the media twists a story to either an agenda or through poor research.
What amazes me more is people will read an article they know the details of and realise there false out misleading information, then turn over the page and read something they know little about and believe every word. It's worse with the TV news.
@@AORD72 if that was the case then every country should sue western media all the time for twisting click baiting headlines, there's no clarity about the law since it's not legalize or apply it yet, we fight for this law cause it's beyond than just sex stuff but there's censorship and punishable for citizen criticizing government, that's more concerning for us, it's problematic law but the western media only highlight about sex and made it look like it already happen.
