39:06 As a FYI the Misriah sticker is a sticker of the logo for the Misriah manufacturer in the Halo universe. They are pretty much responsible for all the UNSC hardware from MA5D Assault Rifles, to M392 Designated Marksman Rifles, even to the Warhog and Pelican drop ship. Just an FYI.
Fun fact! That lee Enfield mod you had does actually have an add-on that corrects the reload count. The problem is it needs an external framework, so it has to be downloaded separately.
I'm surprised Zach didn't notice on the Lee Enfield that one of the mod options was to switch it from loading via stripper clips to loading each bullet individually (which in turn works with BCR and optionally tactical reload)
Love the Lee Enfield so much, everyone always looks at the Browning M1911 and goes "muh two world wars, 45.apc 'cause they don't make a forty six" meanwhile I look at the Enfield and go "muh two world wars, chambered in cheap .303 'cause that's how many british pounds it costs"
There's actually quite a few guns which can claim to have won 2 world wars. The Nagants, for example. Both the rifle and the revolver saw heavy service in both wars. Also the Carcano, in the hands of the Italians when they were part of the Entente in WW1, and in the hands of partisans in WW2. Then you've got all the small eastern European countries which just straight up ripped the Mauser design. Possibly the only gun copied more than the Mauser 1898 pattern was the Charleville musket. Even today, if you walk into a gun store, half the bolt action rifles there will likely be Mauser actions. The 1911 was a good gun, but the only people who copied it were John Browning himself with the Browning Hi Power and the Chinese, but they copy everything so that doesn't mean much
So awesome that you got to rant about the Lee Enfield! I personally own one and it’s my favorite bolt action of all time. You got the history spot on, the model you guys had in the game was the No.4 Mk I which is the same as what I have. It was introduced in 1941. The other model that most people think of when they think of Lee Enfields is the SMLE which was retroactively renamed to the No.1 Mk III.
DegenerateDak on UA-cam made the M2 shoulder gun and he explained that his vision for the mod was that it wasn’t meant to be used by standard infantry but mechanized power infantry. That’s why everything is oversized especially the trigger guard. It’s a stop-gap from the tail end of the resource wars where the US military was using everything it could and adapting M2s to fire from the shoulder of power armor troops is cheaper than building or buying more mini guns and Gatling lasers and certainly cheaper than plasma casters
I love stuff that plays around with the expectations of weapons in a sci-fi setting like this. I always imagined that the reason Desert Eagles are common in Fallout 2 is because they feel a lot less like overkill when you're potentially fighting super mutants or giant radscorpions. Likewise, the Survivalist's (pre-war) rifle in New Vegas is chambered in 12.7mm rounds, which I imagine is because he was potentially having to use it against soldiers in power armour.
Zach's gun rants are what brought me to this channel and seeing a new video got me so excited! :D I always feel like I'm just absorbing info to enforce my gun-nut status and I love it.
The lee enfield came around after the boer war in the late 1800s. The ones the Canadian rangers were using was called the l8a1 which was in 7.62 nato. I wish they were easier to find in the US but it's a hot market for them because 303 is difficult to find. But there were many variants, the first production ones had the magazine cutoff in the reciever. The jungle carbine was made in the late 40s for jungle warfare in Burma. There was also a suppressed version called the De lisle carbine. They're neat, I've owned a few from different eras and they're actions are some of the smoothest.
Rangers were still in .303 until they switched to Colt Canada C19s in .308 in 2015, and they really only switched because no one makes SMLE parts anymore.
The "Jungle Carbine" wasn't actually _made_ for jungle warfare, that's a common misconception, it _was_ designed based on lessons learned during the Burma campaign, but the SMLE No5 was fully intended to replace the Number 4. Starting with Paratrooper units in around 1945 I believe. The process of adopting the Number 5 was halted when the L1A1 was introduced as the new standard issue rifle in the Commonwealth armies in the 50s. The resulting low production numbers and relative scarcity of genuine Number 5s in circulation today has lead to a false perception that these were somehow "specialist" rifles deigned for paratroopers and jungle warfare, this is just straight up false, the Number 5 was always meant from the beginning to be a standard issue rifle to replace(or more accurately; supplement) the Number 4 Mk 1. It was designed to be a rifle that _could_ operate well in jungles, but that doesn't mean they meant for it to be a 'jungle warfare' rifle... As if such a concept even existed in real life. Also, as Joshua said, the Rangers still used the .303(Number 4 Mk 1) SMLEs until they adopted the C19 in 2015-2018. The L8A1 was actually a _British_ rifle(if it was a Canadian rifle, it would have been called the C8A1) - the L8A1 was used by the British Army as a marksman rifle, intended to replace the No4Mk1(T) .303 sniper rifles they had used up until the L8's introduction, I believe most of them were converted from WW2 rifles, and they remained the standard British sniper rifle until the L96/L115 replaced it in the early-late 80s.
hey Zach! I'm American but I speak French and GIGN stands for Groupe d'intervention de la Gendarmerie nationale or when translated to English, the Intervention group of the national Gendarme (Gendarme is a military force with police duties).
To add on to the Lee-Enfield, the Canadian rangers stopped using them in 2017, however when my unit went to Northern Ontario for a winter exercise in 2021 with the Canadian rangers, we brought our Lee-enfields with us as a predatory watch weapon along with Remington 870’s. Our rifles got retired a couple months ago while we wait for the new tikka’s.
Have you guys ever thought about downloading this indie game on Steam called Ravenfield? It has a ton of gun mods available and I would like to see Zach rant about a selection of those. (Such as the WW2 Collection)
@19:00 I could very well be wrong, but I believe the enlarged section at the end of the barrel is a legacy of the fact the M2 was developed from a water cooled gun, the M1921. The M2 was developed from a version designed with a universal reciever, to simplify production it allowed light barrel aircraft, heavy barrel air-cooled vehicle mount versions, and the water cooled ground mount version to all be made from on the same common reciever. That swell at the end would be the bearing surface on the inside of the water jacket. The water cooled version was ditched for being to heavy, and the aircraft version evolved into its own thing, but that barrel profile stayed, probably because it ended up being used for blank firing adapters. Also, a shoulder fired version of the M2 was made during WW2 as a prototype antitank weapon, but it was a bullpup arrangement where the bulk of the reciever was behind the shoulder and the whole thing was held like a bazooka. It wasn't practical but apparently it did work. Also a different development was essentially a stock kit and short bipod to turn one into a huge 1919A6 style Heavy GPMG.
I'm pretty sure the idea behind the shoulder fired M2 is that it's meant to be used in power armor, hence the massive trigger and guard and lack of a concern for weight. Everything else still stands though
Similarly, the original Fallout 4 "Assault Rifle" comes from a point in development where they were contemplating having certain weapons be Power Armor only, and that was intended to be the equivalent of an assault rifle for PA infantry, which is why it resembles an LMG. A big thing in the Fallout universe is having PA weaponry be one 'tier' heavier than regular infantry guns.
Well done Zack, that is indeed a Mark 4 Lee Enfield. specifically the Mark 4 No 1, which has been around since the 1930s and was officially adopted in 1941. The Lee Enfield series has been around since 1895 with the SMLE variant being around since WW1, which is probably what you where thinking of. it's my favourite bolt action.
Other way around. About the time of the No. 4 being introduced, they re-kajiggered the designation system. From the WW1 era Mark designation to a No Z Mk Y designation. Very confusing eh?
@@goldenhidesounds about right. 26:40 beretta now makes the maruhin i believe. Also grains are one of the oldest units of measurement, its 1/7000th of a pound. A 55grain 5.56 bullet would use probably around 25-30 grains of powder. I reload for 30-06, using 168grain bullets my loads are right about 57 grains of powder (depending on type of powder)
39:37 Misriah Armory, the Mars based weapons manufacturer who makes... nearly all the weapons used by UNSC forces up until Infinite. Being responsible the M6 Series Magnum handguns, the MA5 series Assault Rifles, the BR55 series Battle Rifles, the M39 series DMR's, and the SRS99D-S2-AM Sniper rifles. They also manufactured pretty much all of the UNSC's aerial assault vehicles. Broadswords, Shortswords, Longswords, Sabres, Pelicans, Condors, Falcons, Hornets, and Wasps. I love that these are steadily getting longer and longer. Each time we think “Wow, this took a while! He couldn’t possibly have more to say.” When in reality, this is the highly edited version that could be construed as entertaining. Love it
Something that is interesting about the Lee Enfield with the short-barrel, that was an actual modification made by troops during World War 1. I believe instead of being called an obrez, it was called the Trench Raider modification, where troops would saw the stock and barrel down and use it in the trench tunnels.
ayy cool mention of the rangers, had a corporal chat with us about working with them while I was in basic so super interesting to hear y’all talk about them
All the Metal Gear SOCOM moments made me happy, especially with the Collection coming out tomorrow. I also find the SOCOM being the predecessor to the USP neat considering those are the two main handguns (aside from M9) in MGS2
If you want a perfect example of Lee enfield reloading in a game, the Long Dark does it super well where it takes into account how much ammo is already in the magazine. So it goes from loading in whole clips to individual rounds to make up the difference.
Yeah, I don't think the game engine (for FO4 that is) even supports the possibility of partial reloads, there's a reason they made the shotgun in Starfield use "caseless" shells.

Listening to Zach talk about the Lee Enfield and its sights makes me wonder if he's heard of Japan's Type 99 and its plane shooting sights. The Type 99 had the flip ranging sights but attached to that was a little horizontal bar that could let you approximate the speed of aircraft, I guess it worked pretty well in the Sino-Japanese wars.
I would love to see you two play Hunt: Showdown. It has a lot of pre WW1 guns as well as a lot of early experimental weapons that Zach could rant about a lot i feel.
Oh god he'd hate it and mike would love it. Sadly it doesn't really fit with their style, but the Romero alamo? The Avto? The Vetterli Cyclone? Zach would be so mad.
Fun fact, the ANZACs (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) came up with a few ingenious ideas at Gallipoli involving the Lee Enfield rifle. One was the rifle with a trench periscope fitted allowing soldiers to aim and fire their rifles whilst keeping themselves safely in the cover of the trenches. Another invention was the drip or "pop off rifle" that utilised a weight system that allowed the rifle to fire without needing someone to pull the trigger, the ANZACs used these during the evacuation of Gallipoli as a means of tricking the Turks into thinking the trenches were stilled manned, while entire trenches were abandoned with nothing but these self-firing rifles popping off sporadically
So, the Lurker pistol is actually based on the Lercker pistol. It's this little .25 ACP pistol made post WW2 in Italy, in a dude's garage. Here's the trick, it's a select-fire machine pistol. The mag for it could hold 20 rounds of .25 ACP, and it fires from an open bolt at 1200rpm. How do I know all this? I did the research for it when I made a 3D model for it (not the one featured here), one of the first pics for the Lercker on Google. God, I could probably rant for days on guns, might even be able to match Zach there.
So, the sniper revolver makes sense since, they (GIGN) didn't always the choice of where to set up your shooting position, and sometimes you're in something barely bigger than a locker and it's far easier on the elbow room than a regular sniper rifle. Also, they paired the operative with the revolver with another buddy with a MP5 or P90.
I enjoy listening to people who are both knowledgeful and have an almost gleeful joy about their knowledgeful thing.. It also helps when they are entertaining. Keep it up!
This was a fun video, Zach seems to know a hell of a lot about firearms and is great about sharing it in a fun way. (and whatever mods you got going on make me WANT to play FO4...which is hard)
I was genuinely surprised and had a damn smile on my face when Zach actually mentioned the Canadian Rangers with the Lee Enfield, and he got it all right! It’s a lil’bit of hearsay from up north here, but once the Enfields were retired from service the Rangers that did have them were basically told, “Yea keep’em they’re your rifles now.”.
fun fact. the lurker auto pistol was a real gun, it was manufactured in Italy as an automatic handgun named the Lercker pistol and it was designed and meant for sale in italy but after only 150 handguns being made, the guns were banned by the italian government. it was chambered in the absolutely tiny 6.35 auto
really want to see you guys playing insurgency. either for the PTSD or the weapons wich zach would go insane over how well designed both the models and sounds are
Hearing Zach say "seriously ? The first thing you came up with was this super complicated thing" reminded me of when i was studying graphic design and the teacher said "it's easy to make things complicated, it's hard to make them simple" and then i laughed.... And then i criend when my project was to simplify something. I don't remember what it was, so yes! Making things complicated IS easier than making them simpler.
Yeah. Like, if I wanted to I could probably design a gun just using what I know, but that thing would suck. It'd certainly be complicated, unreliable, and inefficient. I remember hearing from an engineer I knew something to the extent of 'the simpler or easier something looks like it'd be to design, the harder it was for the people designing it to come up with.' A great example is spaghetti code in programing
Man, that Lee Enfield mod is really well done. Shame it doesnt track the rounds fired, but the fact that they made a custom animation that good (albeit very fast) for the double stripper clip reload is awesome in its own right.
As someone who lives a few miles from CZ-USA and who’s EDC is a CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow, I’d like to thank you for recognizing the good CZ has been doing in the gun world. For those curious, the Lee-Enfield is a No.4 Mk.1, either pre to early WW2 or postwar "Factory Through Repair" a.k.a. re-arsenal/depot reset. Milled ladder sight (there were stamped versions of the ladder sight, and also a 2-aperture "L sight", akin to the M16A2's carry handle, though zeroed for 300/600 yards)

I'm more surprized he didn't notice a hole in the weapon model...
@@GalenLeRaazwait where?
Someone should take the Pancor Jackhammer concept and make it a full production weapon so Zach can finally like it.

@Novus_art Naah, it's that Zach's rants are epic being that he's a gunsmith.
That cut to far cry 2 during the Lee Enfield obrez shot was perfect.
Reminds me of the shoulder fired Barrett prototype Brandon Herrera recently acquired.
I wish Fallout 4 had Power Armor only weapons but nooo, anyone could use anything.
@@Geothesponge111 The Survivalist Rifle actually is intended as a checkpoint weapon, specifically to take out car engine blocks!

I ended up reloading my own 303 due to how hard ammo is to find. Some of the milsurp ammo that used to be out there was just awful. Scary hang fires.
The first Boer War. The second Boer War saw pretty heavy use of Enfields
Don't forget the ishapore, a lee enfield chambered in 7.62 nato used by a reserve arm of the indian armed forces
Now I kinda wonder the alternate timeline where the Sjogren Inertial was made first. Would the inertia recoil system have become more commonly used?

Zach should definitely start a podcast where he just talks about guns with other guntubers.
A big thing in the Fallout universe is having PA weaponry be one 'tier' heavier than regular infantry guns.
that crocodile drawing was beautiful 😭
Well done Zack, that is indeed a Mark 4 Lee Enfield. specifically the Mark 4 No 1, which has been around since the 1930s and was officially adopted in 1941. The Lee Enfield series has been around since 1895 with the SMLE variant being around since WW1, which is probably what you where thinking of. it's my favourite bolt action.
Other way around. About the time of the No. 4 being introduced, they re-kajiggered the designation system. From the WW1 era Mark designation to a No Z Mk Y designation.
Very confusing eh?

Something that is interesting about the Lee Enfield with the short-barrel, that was an actual modification made by troops during World War 1. I believe instead of being called an obrez, it was called the Trench Raider modification, where troops would saw the stock and barrel down and use it in the trench tunnels.
The Obrez is a short barreled stockless Mosin Nagant.
ayy cool mention of the rangers, had a corporal chat with us about working with them while I was in basic so super interesting to hear y’all talk about them
All the Metal Gear SOCOM moments made me happy, especially with the Collection coming out tomorrow.
I also find the SOCOM being the predecessor to the USP neat considering those are the two main handguns (aside from M9) in MGS2
when i was in sea cadets, we trained to do drill with arms with a lee-enfield #4, it had the firing mechanism removed though.

Mike, our eternal thanks for enabling Zach's gun rants.
I want to take a moment to just appreciate the smooth transition at 8:04 that was damn clean
Keep it up!

Zach is one of the few people who can make the technical knowledge of guns interesting.
Man, that Lee Enfield mod is really well done. Shame it doesnt track the rounds fired, but the fact that they made a custom animation that good (albeit very fast) for the double stripper clip reload is awesome in its own right.
An hour of Mike making polite noises for Zach is an hour well spent.
