Fertilizing in Sphagnum Moss: 3 Incredible Methods for Orchid Growth

  • Orchids don’t need a lot of fertilizer. When they are grown in the wild in their natural habitat, they receive nutrition 24 hours a day but in tiny doses.
    When a current of air rushes by the aerial roots, they pick up a tiny strain of nitrogen. When a monkey such as a long-tailed macaque jumps from limb to limb above them shaking the overhead canopy, the orchid leaves receive a microscopic dose of calcium or magnesium. Torrential rain flushes boron and potassium over the bark and onto the roots.
    We can’t do that when growing orchids indoors, so we supplement the lack of these nutrients with orchid fertilizers.
    How do you fertilize an orchid in moss? There are three methods of fertilizing orchids that are cultivated in sphagnum moss. First, hydrate the orchid the day before applying fertilizer. The second method is to fertilize the same day, using a resting period of at least three hours before fertilization. A third method includes only to apply fertilizers as a mist. The only fertilization method not recommended is a slow-release fertilizer placed on top of the medium.
    The problem with fertilizing orchids in moss as if they were planted in other media is that the sphagnum, being highly absorbent, moss will accumulate more fertilizer than other media will.
    For starters, even though you will be using a weak dose of fertilizer, you’ll still need to divide that in half again. If you want the full explanation of this video in writing, go to orchideria.com...

    I read another site, sorry!! I am back. She recommended, if you cut roots, sprinkle cinnamon w/ water, on cut areas. What do you think? Jeannie in Lakeport California

    Hello, I received an orchid called Sacrochilus Melba and I have been researching to see what the proper care for this Australian orchid may be. I've planted on in all lava rocks to see if it lives. Looks like the roots are very healthy for the most part. I cut off a few since they were dry and rotting. Do you have any suggestions on its care? I believe they like to cold and not too much light that is direct. Thank you

      Hi Diana, I don't have an article or video about that right now so I can't help you with that at this moment. So sorry.

    Hi lovely video as always! Just wondering how much liquid fertilizer exactly please? I usually go for 1/2 of what the label recommends. So with Spaghnum moss would be a 1/4 of the recommended dose or much less at an 1/8? Many thanks :)

      Thanks. I would go with 1/4 and test to see what happens

    How often should you fertilize

      Hi Kathleen, I fertilize once a week for three weeks. On the 4th week, I just use plain water (distilled).

      My pleasure! As for the rootless orchid, I would use a root stimulating hormone product, that has a high phosphorous count, the 2nd number in the npk ratio. You can also buy products (depending on where you live) that specifically target root growth. Even without a hormone stimulating product, orchids will develop good root growth over time with the right amount of light, water, and humidity.

    How often to water it

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  3 роки тому

      Hi Nada, I water mine every 12-14 days, but that is going to depend on a lot of things: how big your pot is, how big the orchid is, what else is in the medium... So my suggestion would be to water every 7 days first and go from there. If it's too dry, then the next watering water in 6 days, and so on.
