    I had to sub... I'm a brotha that happened to scribe an orchid in the hospital 10 years ago. I repotted it in soil, and learned 7 years later that was a mistake (it lived). I repotted in bark and used that medium for a couple years. I'm learning about using moss properly.... thanks for the video!

    Thanks for another great video, Randy. I'm going to share this even though I've never found a good answer as to why it happened. I made a moss-lined basket for a friend. After soaking the moss, squeezing out the moisture, and lining the basket, my hands started to itch, swell, and turn very red. It could have been a reaction called sporotrichosis, an infection caused by the fungus Sporothrix schenckii which sphagnum contains. It took a couple of Benedryl and some calamine lotion to calm them down. Since then, I never handle moss without gloves. I don't know if this is a rare thing but better to have more knowledge than not enough!

      So glad you shared, I've never had any issues but I will be sure to pass this along in future videos.

      Your reaction was not too uncommon. I'm glad you were able to control it.

    Love it. Another informative video. May I ask what was the purpose of putting a ball of moss in the center of the roots?

    • @TheBlackOrchidProject
      @TheBlackOrchidProject  4 роки тому +2

      To fill in that area. It can be tedious trying to get moss between the roots. So putting the ball in the middle helps fill that in some.

    I've been searching for a good how-to for sphagnum moss and had to go through quite a few videos, but finally came across yours and it's exactly the info I was looking for. Thank you!! Can I ask, did you moisten/soak the moss ahead of time before starting the repotting process?

    Can you reuse the bark? Or better to purchase new ?

      You can, boil it and let it dry. May be easier to just buy new though.

    Hi! Thank you for all the videos and tips :) I see orchid plant food spikes and sprays, are those necessary? I'm repotting my plant in sphagnum moss. :)

      Hey Andrea, It's good to feed them occasionally. Especially in moss.The tannin in bark and charcoal helps when in bark. Moss provides little to no nutrients. I suggest an orchid specific food that dissolves in water.

      @@TheBlackOrchidProject i appreciate your response...I received my white orchid for mother's day and have been so hopeful....I re potted in sphagnum moss 2 weeks ago and my plant is dying if not already dead :( the repotting looks like it burned and shriveled up my plant which hadn't happened before. All the leaves fell off 😔

    I was wondering if you use Clay Leca Balls in your Orchid Mix? I have mine in Leca Balls and they are in Simi Hydroponics.

      I have not yet. I have some from another project years ago haven’t gone that route yet. I have some friends that use them and love it. I’m sure I’ll try it eventually. Sounds like you like it?
