Sorry to be off topic but does someone know a method to get back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost my password. I appreciate any tips you can give me!
I was gifted a phalaenopsis for my birthday last month by my employers and one of them told me she'd long given up trying to care for them; they always died! I'd never had any house plants before and never even considered getting one, so the thought of trying to keep this orchid alive was intimidating. This channel has made orchid care feel so simple for even the worst plant owners like myself; I went from total fear of this one orchid dying to feeling like I could turn this into an actual hobby and have a whole bunch of plants! You're great and I appreciate you!!
Dani!! I've been such a long time viewer of your channel. I let my entire collection die a couple of years ago due to depression and vowed to never touch the hobby again, but one of you videos popped up on my feed and I watched to see what you've been getting up to recently and I got the bug again. I'll probably keep a small collection this time but thank you for continuing to make content around this amazing hobby. You're truly on of the best!!
Hi Guys, today I came back from a 4 day trip...I'm a beginner, so my neighbor gave me her dead phalen. plant several weeks ago. So I had no clue how to care for it, so I came here and watched a bunch of MissOrchidGirl videos. I repotted, took off all dead roots, cut off a dead shoot, left the yellow leaf alone and changed the medium and watered the plant..So today upon my return I found the orchid plant had bloomed 2 buds. I am so thrilled to see the blooms. So I will give it a hand at rescuing what appear to be dead plants. I have her outside on a ledge where she get very little morning sun, and is shaded the remainder of the day. I didn't even fertilize her...but need to check this video. That yellow top leaf just dried off by itself and fell off...
fertilizerss going down either the sewer of rainwater system can lead to environmental contamination... used fertilizer is best used on other plants or grass, where the chances of anything spreading is much reduced. Fertilisers have been held responsible for massive algae blooms on corals reefs. Just putting it out there as part of the larger discussion on how to be responsible with our hobby.
Usually it's not a problem if it's going down the drain because it goes through treatment centers. Runoff from farms into bodies of water is, by far, the main contributor to fertilizer pollution. However, you make a good point when it comes to orchids that are kept outside, as the runoff may not end up in a treatment center 👍🏽
@@o_o8203 In treatment centers a specific chemical has to be targeted. This is why we see bodies of water that contain wild fish that have antibiotics, caffeine and other chemicals in their systems (from people peeing while on meds, flushing pills, dumping coffee/soda into drain, etc.). Treatment plants don't target these things, therefore they are not sorted out.
From the Netherlands: I like your videos on orchids. Instead of using commercial fertilizers, one can use rice water mixed with seaweed extract. Blend one sheet of seaweed with 1/2 ltr water in a blender after which the mixture should be sieved. Add 2 tsp of white rice in 1/2 ltr of water and let it soak for 1/2 hour, then sieve the mixture to remove the rice. Mix the 2 mixtures (seaweed and rice) and spray the leaves of the orchids after which you use the mixture to soak the pot. Do this once a month!
I would really not do that 😬 because of 3 questions: 1. Are you meeting your orchid’s full nutritional needs? 2. Are the organics fully breaking down into chemical compounds orchids can uptake? 3. Are you gonna win the mold lottery? 🤭
First I want to say you’ve turned me into a orchid lover I always want to grow plants but never have the information I need to keep them healthy you show me everything to make me super comfortable also I love how orchids really do tell you want they need! So I do have one question, if I end up needed to water my orchid more often then a week like every 2-3 days should I wait to fertilize until week point or still do it with every watering? Thanks so much for everything
Thank you for all your videos. I love Orchids and learning how to take care of them has been a goal of mine. Such a pretty flower and really cool plant! Thanks again!
Really liking your videos, received an orchid for my birthday, and though I have some knowledge on plants, know nothing about orchids, happy to say my plant is still doing well at 3 months thanks to your information. Thank you
Thank you so much for making these videos! I bought an orchid a few months ago, I didn’t know you needed special orchid soil for it and I repotted it when I got it into peat moss, I’m buying some fertilizers and special soil for it and I hope I’m not too late in saving it!
I know this video is two years old, so this might be a difficult request, but would you mind identifying the three phalaenopsis orchids in the first two minutes of the video? I’ve tried to find out through the video and the video description but couldn’t find that piece of info - either because I overlooked, or it really wasn’t there. I really love how the blooms look in all three of these phals, and the one at 00:00:59 in particular has stolen my heart at first sight. Such beauties! Thanks in advance for the ID!
Hi Orchid girl. I finally had success with a gifted orchid I received last year. I only watered once a week (sometimes every week and a half), and I had a nice bloom. Question: what does re-potting do for a plant? Is it necessary? Great channel by the way.
Just repotted our Phalaenopis after the blooms finished about a week ago (9-7). Today I fertilized it for the first time ever. (Was a gift in May and was in bloom then). I used 1/2 the strength recommended in the instructions just to be sure. Cut the cane when repotted to the first bud. Hope to see it start growth soon. Thanks for the info and links to repotme. Used their mix and pot. Very pleased.
I bought my first orchid a couple of weeks ago. Call me crazy but imho orchids are weird, they are mesmerising. You get one and somehow this plant starts drawing you in. I think if I do well with this one by summer I'll get another one. They are weird flowers. I love them💗
Wow, your videos are amazing! Pleasant, informative and so thorough! Thank you so much, my orchids are grateful too 😉 This channel should be called The Orchid Queen 💚
I just purchased a beautiful white and red Phalaenopsis from Lowes. When I set it up in a pot I noticed that the sphagnum moss was green from over watering. Since it has about 13 flowers on it now, I really didn't want to change the media now and chance loosing the flowers. Do you think that it will be okay until the flowers die back? Love your UA-cam channel! It has been so helpful to me learning about these beautiful plants!!
Hi Danny. Great series! Although I know about how to fertilize but I've had a few friends who have phals and just getting into the hobby. I've told them to watch your vids to help educate them and of course I show them how to repot and what supplies to use. I have have one friend who has 30 something phals and had never repotted them in 3-4yrs! This vid and others like it will help her so much! THANK YOU! Rowan
gr8 lessons thankyou, love my Phalaenopsis Orchid, mine has droopy leaves at the moment but that maybe down to not watering enough, just gave it a soak pulled the old leaves off and chopped it down to the possible flowering point, see how we go.
Hello! What are your thoughts on slow release fertilizers? Could the pellets potentially hurt any roots they stay in contact with? Are they safe/effective to use as powder fertilizers?
Orchid Newbie here. My orchid is stressed. Got her about a year ago and all of a sudden she started stressing = root damage and very few good ones. It has no flowers or any sign of any coming. I removed dead roots and put it in RO water culture with nutrients☆ because I didn't know what to do but get it out of its pot and remove all dead roots. My home is always 71° and very dry. ☆ RO water w ferts = [Gal mix] orchid nutrient 1/2"strength, CalMag 1/4 strength, fish/seaweed fertilizer (1/2 t). And what size pot do you recommend. Your site has been so beneficial to me. Hope to hear from you. Thank you. Joanne
1) What are the features that you recommend when shopping for grow lights, and 2) are there small ones for those of us that don't have an entire room dedicated? Thanks.
Ha! That’s what I’ve been doing with my moth orchids I got last year. They’re currently reblooming so I guess it’s safe? I know it’s dechlorinated and contains some nitrates, but I’m not sure it provides all they need. I’m here trying to decide if I should get an orchid specific fertilizer to maybe provide additional nutrients.
I do. Haven't seen any issues. Probably the only thing is some mineral build over a span of like 12 months but nothing a few waterings with tank water that's been diluted with Distilled water or putting it out in the rain.
Hi Danny I love your channel. I have a question. I have been using bloom booster for my phals that's are in bloom and a 20-10-20 for my phals that are in the growing state. But I would like to use the one you use. Is it a good idea to change fertilizer to the one you use for ALL my phals? Thanks again Danny
Orchid posts are slotted for breathability, and transparent so the roots can get light. Do you _leave_ your orchids in their opaque, decorative pots all the time? If you do, I don't understand how this would not be bad for the orchid. I am new to orchids and really appreciate all your videos. 🙂
I dont think the roots absolutely need light to be healthy. Theres plenty of good roots that are actually white from lack of sunlight that function perfectly. The leaves are what needs the light. Roots dont.. thats my understanding.
I v been using miracle grow fertilizer for orchid and it works find. I tried to order Orchid Mix from re-pot but considering they charge shipping it is expensive One of the issue i have ( im not sure if this is an issue) but my Phalaenopsis orchid grows fine and only bloomed for one year
Hey Dannie!! Hello from Greece!! Love your videos and advice! So when you water them you fertilize them at the same time . You don't wait a little time to put the fertilizer.. and the waiting _watering time is about 10 min. Not more ?? Or is it up to the plant!!
New orchid owner here. Ive had my oncidium since May, but it only grew long green leaf. It did not produce a bulb like middle body, but and thin long body. I feed it dynagro foliage pro. Should I add high PK to encourage bloom?
I really like the suggestion of diluting the recommended amount to a fourth and fertilizing every time you water. When you say to flush on the 5th week, do you only use water that week and resume fertilizing on the 6th week, or do you do a fertilizing soak after the flush on the 5th week?
Hi Dani. Thank you so much for all your wonderful videos. I do have a question though. I bought a full sized phal that was very dehydrated about a week ago. I've repotted and watered, and it's already looking much better and the leaves are almost not limp at all. The question is about the aerial roots. There are plenty of roots in the medium, and they're looking much better. The aerial roots though are still very wrinkled and shriveled. They are most definitely still alive though. Should I be misting or watering the aerial roots regularly too or will they plump back up once the main plant and leaves are ok?
Hi, it isn't necessary to mist them, the potted roots will hydrate the orchid. But if you want to maintain them alive you could mist them :) here's more on aerial roots ua-cam.com/video/7GGWbBt2SvA/v-deo.html
Ok so if you are fertilizing every week or every time you need to water with a weaker solution of fertilizer, how do you store the leftover fertilizer solution? Or do you just make enough for each watering? I only have one orchid so making a gallon every time is a waste, where i could just make a gallon and store it for the entire month and use that for each watering. Hope my question makes sense.
Hi, many fertilizers tend to degrade once mixed in water, it would be great to either prepare less, or use the left overs with other plants, it won't hurt them 😊
Do you have a video on how to know if your orchid is dying or just losing it’s flowers? I have a mini phal and I have been taking really good care and the roots looks great but the flowers are falling and the stem is turning yellow only right behind it but not the whole flower spike.
Hi, Great videos. Do you know why it is so difficult to find a supplier of MSU or repotme, or even an equivalent? I've heard Akerne Rain Mix are a make of MSU but again this is hard to find.
Hi Danni, firstly thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, I have been growing orchids in the tropics/ sub tropics here in Australia for the past 25 years and thought my understanding of them was pretty good! Well you proved the old saying you are never too old to learn 🙃 Apologies if you have covered this but when using the slow release fertiliser, do you still regularly fertilise? I'm guessing not, someone has just recently given me some and I thought I may use them for my collection in the shadehouse to save on time, getting lazy in my old age! Cheers
Can I reuse the fertilizer water again for my orchids for the next week’s watering. If so, how many times can I reuse the water from the orchids before I need to give them clean fertilizer water
I am brand spanking new to orchids. Purchased my first one a few days ago. Yesterday went to Home Depot and got a spray bottle fertilizer from Miracle Gro. The numbers are 02 02 02. Does this mean it is too weak of a fertilizer? Should I avoid spraying the fertilizer on the orchid?
I do love your videos! So thorough, thank you! I’ve seen someone on UA-cam say to fertilize with a dilution of black tea, then next week with calcium, then next week a marine fertilizer, marphyl, then Epsom salts. Each time soaking 15 minutes. Then repeating this cycle. What do you advise? Is there any validity to this. Her orchids look healthy.
Hi, I'm not big on diy ferts or hacks of sorts, I use only one fert developed by the Michigan Stats University for the past 4 and a half years or so and the results are what you see in my videos. For me this is good, to each their own 😊
Question Miss Orchid ?? I bought a Orchid, it came in a big medium size decorative pot. I took some of the medium out and notice there are two clear pots under neath. Like I could have two Orchids when I repot, do you recommend once I repot to have two separate orchids in two repots/two decorative pots or just get two repots and put them both back together in the same decorative pot that I bought it in?? Does it matter regarding the health of the flower for the long haul??
Thanks for your videos . Most instructive. Question: the indoor-plant (liquid) fertilizer I bought at the local department store here in Berlin, which cost all of a few bucks for 3l, provides the very same macro- and microelements as shown in your video. Its NPK is 736 - the first (N) and last (K) exactly like the Dyna-Gro you show at (3:37) and the phosphorus at three exactly like the stuff you use. Couldn't I use that in small dosages?
Yes you can. Bottom line. She’s advertising a specific product. There’s always choices… some may very well be better than others. But once you know why or what you need, you can make good decisions about what to purchase.
Hi. I bought this fertizilier based on your recommendation a couple of years ago. It now looks stuck together and slightly different color. Is it still ok to use on the orchids?
Hey, my orchids have rebloomed for the firet time since purchase but i think their flowers are a bit smaller than they were when i bought them. Was wondering if fertiliser was what it needed?
I just repotted my orchids in aaa gold imperial mix, which I think u mentioned we shouldn’t soak the pot, need to pour to water it. In this case, do you still flush it every month? I worry it will be too much water considering how much moss it has in this specific type of potting mix. Thank you.
Qq…..how do I feed my orchid if it’s in a clay orchid pot? Is it the same process? Or it is recommended I use a plastic orchid pot. I have a dendrobrium orchid
I have a question: I plan on using self watering pots for my orchid... so... do I just fill the base with the water/fertilizer mixture ? And use the mixture each time I fill it ? Thanks ! Love your channel BTW. You've made me very interested in orchid care and am planning on buying several
Hi i'm new in planting orchid.. i really like your lighting. May i know what color are you using. Right now i have a white light full spectrum. I'm thinking of getting another one like a sun like yellow lighting.. may i know yours? I don't like red and blue only bevause it doesnt give me the besuty ehen i look at my orchids.. thank you @MissOrchidGirl
Go ahead but the charcoal is going to absorb alot of it. The orchid will still get some. It's worth it to have the charcoal, it protects from bacteria and fungus.
If I heard her correctly, media does not determine fertilization requirements. All orchids need it. She said something like, when in doubt start with 1/4 recommended, if all is good increase to 1/2 recommended in a month. This was to fert with every water; 1/4 always when flowering. If there is a negative effect go back to 1/4 recommended. It's all trial and error because every environment is different. Water is also v important. I use RO. Tap is ok if it's not hard water. Artificially softened water has a lot of salt in it. P.S. Somewhere in here, I think in a vid on Various Media she said she doesn't use charcoal, has no experience with it. I do know charcoal is good to discourage fungus. That said, I would use just a little. Might want to view the vid again. She gives us some much info in 1 vid I view them more than once.
I just got a phalaenopsis orchid, and the person who got it for me got a fertilizer that says you spray it on the the leaves. is that safe for an orchid?
Hi and happy new year ,i wanna ask if this msu fertikizwr works the same with tap water.u knowledge will help me a lot,im waiting soon u thoughts.my tap water if i use ph down to 5,8 will be ok this msu fert.
Am a total newbie and am so glad to have found your channel (have subbed). I have lost one, my poor son helped and watered the leaves. I have one left and when she has finished flowering (I am so surprised she has about 10 new flowers) I plan to change her to leca with a wick self watering. Can you please tell me how we fertilise if we are using a self waterer with leca. THANK YOU
How soon after removing dead roots (a lot) and repotting my orchids in good medium (monterey dark) should I fertilize them? If I fertilize them too soon will it shock them?
I only have two phalaenopsis orchids plants to fertilize. Is a whole gallon of water mixed with the fertilizer granules from repotme.com necessary for only two plants?
I just discovered your channel and it’s amazing. Thank you so much! One of the featured orchids in your video has yellow and pink/purple blush colors. I have never seen such a beautiful orchid. What is the name of it? I’d like to purchase one.
What you could do to keep the fertilizer from getting damp is place a silica packet in the jar. The silica will absorb the moisture and keep it fresh...
I have a doubt regarding a decorative vase / container, I know that orchids are supposed to be in plastic transparent pots, my doubt is, can I keep an orchid with transparent pot in a let's say colored vases, will this harm the roots that won't receive that much light anymore?
Can I ask a fertilizer question here? I have a TDS meter. I typically use rain water to water my orchids. My tap water reads over 300 ppm of total dissolved solids. My rain water typically reads between 35 and 50 ppm. So my question is, the fertilizer I got from repot me website states 125 ppm during the winter. Do I take into account the 35-50 ppm that already exists in the water so, therefore, reduce the fertilizer? 125 ppm needed so 125- 35 = 90 ppm. Is that how you are supposed to fertilize? Or do you just add the 125 ppm to the 35 and it would end up being 160 ppm?
Hi Danny. Not knowing anything about phalaenopsis orchids, I bought it from a supermarket. It was in sphagnum moss n I repotted in bark. Now the leaves are wrinkled n limp n brown patches on them. Now it is slowly turning yellow. What should I do. Iam more stressed than my orchid. Help me.

I have the slow release ones and I think it helped bring out newer flowers to be, I have never gotten orchids to bloom again!

Hi, yes it should be ok, fertilizer change will not cause shock if used in the recommended dosage. Always start weak and see how orchids progress :)
Seems like the extra outer decorative pot wouldn't allow enough air to get to the roots, though. Just my 2 cents. I'm definitely no expert!
What is the identity of the Phalaenopsis shown at 11:33? I have seen this one featured in several of your videos but can't seem to find a name for it.
Wonderful question! Did you get an answer? I would love to know as well.
@@lotieda I have not.
I v been using miracle grow fertilizer for orchid and it works find.
I tried to order Orchid Mix from re-pot but considering they charge shipping it is expensive
One of the issue i have ( im not sure if this is an issue) but my Phalaenopsis orchid grows fine and only bloomed for one year
Have you used moisture another packets in your main fertilizer container? That might help the mushy powder stay dry.
Hey Dannie!! Hello from Greece!! Love your videos and advice! So when you water them you fertilize them at the same time . You don't wait a little time to put the fertilizer.. and the waiting _watering time is about 10 min. Not more ?? Or is it up to the plant!!
Thanks for the info. Ordered the repot me a minute ago!
Hope you enjoy! 🧡
New orchid owner here. Ive had my oncidium since May, but it only grew long green leaf. It did not produce a bulb like middle body, but and thin long body. I feed it dynagro foliage pro. Should I add high PK to encourage bloom?
Sorry what and when do you clean the leaves please .and what do you use ? Thank you
You can also and silica bags to keep the fert. dry
I really like the suggestion of diluting the recommended amount to a fourth and fertilizing every time you water. When you say to flush on the 5th week, do you only use water that week and resume fertilizing on the 6th week, or do you do a fertilizing soak after the flush on the 5th week?
View the vid again. Think she covered this. Think she said flush with no fert 1x month to remove any possible salts, etc.
Great video, lots of helpful information. Can you give us a link for your watering tool?
Can I use the water leftover from one watering to water my other orchids at the same time. Seems to me I can… but being new to this I need to ask
Well you proved the old saying you are never too old to learn 🙃
Apologies if you have covered this but when using the slow release fertiliser, do you still regularly fertilise? I'm guessing not, someone has just recently given me some and I thought I may use them for my collection in the shadehouse to save on time, getting lazy in my old age! Cheers
Do you fertilize 1/4 strength every week with one week of rest And flush. Do I still fertilize when the orchid is in bloom
Great video, handy for reference. Lovely to see the Phalaenopsis 'Sunshine' you have there too. Such a pretty thing.
I would also like to know. I've been using this one for a few months but I'm not sure if I'm doing harm or not.
For me this is good, to each their own 😊
MissOrchidGirl thank you
That is too complicated!!
Could you perhaps put a dessicant packet in the powdered fertilizer so they don't get mushy with the water in the air?
Thank you Dani. Was very helpful indeed.
Is Schultz liquid orchid food ok it’s 15-5-5 or is this a bloom booster ?
Hi there - any suggestions on fertilizing Vanda orchids that have no medium at all?
These videos are SO wonderful - thank you so much! What is the name of the orchid that you show in the second minute of this video? It is spectacular!
Hi, glad you enjoy my vids 😁 it's a Phal. Taisuco Jasper :)
Thanks 😘😘😘😘😘
I just repotted my orchids in aaa gold imperial mix, which I think u mentioned we shouldn’t soak the pot, need to pour to water it. In this case, do you still flush it every month? I worry it will be too much water considering how much moss it has in this specific type of potting mix. Thank you.
Qq…..how do I feed my orchid if it’s in a clay orchid pot? Is it the same process? Or it is recommended I use a plastic orchid pot. I have a dendrobrium orchid
Weekly fertilizer makes sense to me.
I have a question: I plan on using self watering pots for my orchid... so... do I just fill the base with the water/fertilizer mixture ? And use the mixture each time I fill it ? Thanks ! Love your channel BTW. You've made me very interested in orchid care and am planning on buying several
Great informative video. Excellent presentation. Thanks a lot Miss
Amazing tutorials! Would you recommend the orchid plant food mist? And if so, how would you recommend using it?
So you need to fertilize every time you water? Even if it’s once every 3, 5 or 7 days?
Thanks for sharing 😘
Danny I have some of my phal. Planted in bark, charcoal, perlite should I still fertilize those and then some just in MG orchid mix and perlite
Go ahead but the charcoal is going to absorb alot of it. The orchid will still get some. It's worth it to have the charcoal, it protects from bacteria and fungus.
I used miracle gro and unfortunately it had mold in it and I am fight root and stem rot in four of my orchids. I will never use it again.
Following
Hi and happy new year ,i wanna ask if this msu fertikizwr works the same with tap water.u knowledge will help me a lot,im waiting soon u thoughts.my tap water if i use ph down to 5,8 will be ok this msu fert.
I'm a little confused as we purchased some orchids from an orchid nursery recently and they said we should fertilise the leaves, and not the roots?
Am a total newbie and am so glad to have found your channel (have subbed). I have lost one, my poor son helped and watered the leaves. I have one left and when she has finished flowering (I am so surprised she has about 10 new flowers) I plan to change her to leca with a wick self watering. Can you please tell me how we fertilise if we are using a self waterer with leca. THANK YOU
SO informative. Thank you so much!
When is it safe to use once I had re planted it? Or is there no need to if used fresh potting mix?
Hi, about a month after repotting is ok to start fertilizing. At that time roots should be starting to settle in grow faster 😊
Did you pour the whole gallon onto one orchid.?
What you could do to keep the fertilizer from getting damp is place a silica packet in the jar. The silica will absorb the moisture and keep it fresh...
Hi, thanks I am doing that already ☺️
@@MissOrchidGirl No problem. thank you for the reply.
I have a doubt regarding a decorative vase / container, I know that orchids are supposed to be in plastic transparent pots, my doubt is, can I keep an orchid with transparent pot in a let's say colored vases, will this harm the roots that won't receive that much light anymore?
Just became an orchid mama LOL already sent out for my orchid pot how do I know what type of medium to put my orchids and when I transplant?
Check out the video on repotting an orchid. She goes over that and mentions that it's best not to repot when it's in bloom, if possible.
Pleaseeee what's the name of the beautiful yellow and pink orchid with little spots? I must have if
Could we reuse the fertilizer for other orchids?
Hi, trust me these values are negligeble, you can use the msu at the strenght recommended, no worries 😉
Help me.
Nice video for beginners.
Hi Danny, I have been following your videos for long. My question is can I use pine chips as a potting medium? Will it harm the plant?
I just repotted my orchid with that. Hope it survives. Any update from yours?
