I live by SPHAGNUM. I've switched out all of my plants over to it and they are pushing out faster and bigger growth then in soil. Another GREAT video...
I just want to point out that sphagnum isn’t a renewable recourse, and I personally wish people would take this into consideration when using sphagnum. You may already be aware of this, so this comment is hopefully for somebody else looking into sphagnum moss.
Matilda Just started getting into sphagnum because I’m trying to hang baskets. After seeing all the comments about how great it’s been to other people’s plants, I’m glad I ran into your comment! Definitely something to take into consideration - thank you. :)
@@kathleensonline I'm glad to hear it! Coco coir is an alternative, but it may have its own draw backs. As long as people are making educated decisions! Good luck :)
I am so glad someone is addressing this. I grow just about everything in it, including when I was big into succulents/cactus! I originally got the idea from succulent wreaths. Then I started experimenting by propagating plants into it and left them in it. Many plants show us they prefer it when you use it in propagation boxes. Many plants that rot easily do very well living in it instead of soil. I also found that with my hand/wrist issues, the moss and a plastic pot kept things very light to handle, which really helped me out. There is a caution with this: it can cause lung issues if you handle the dry material and breath in the dust. Do not blow this off or take it lightly. This issue is easily solved, however, by soaking it and being careful when initially handling the dry material: I wear a mask or stay "upwind" of any dust when pulling it out of the bales it is sold in to wet it. This issue is no longer a problem when in a pot because it is compact in the pot and is no longer loose/being manipulated. I remember a few years ago watching a bonsai plant tuber that used it for bonsai! Worked perfectly for him. Fungus gnat larva feed on soil fungus. No soil, no fungus. Fungus doesn't like the acidity of the moss as well. Things CAN rot in it if soil particles are introduced into it and/or it is kept sopping wet. When reusing moss from propagation boxes, I rinse it well with very hot water, then soak it in hydrogen peroxide water (not long) before draining and placing it back in my propagation boxes.
Thank you very useful. Just wondering when you wash with hot water to reuse can that kill the Spaghnum moss though? I'm lead to believe the moss is alive and that's why it's green? I want to clean to reuse but I don't want to kill it so I want to do it right. Many thanks.
The watering struggle is real. It totally makes sense that a humid environment is essential to keeping plants in sphagnum moss. Thanks so much for sharing.
I am in awe of your collection!! Love the regale, waroc, and verrucosum especially!! I've never had very good luck with sphagnum moss, but am hoping to experiment some with it this spring!
I use spagnum moss adding a little bit with Happy frog organic soil mix with adding a little bit of perlite,my syngonium been so ng fine for months, new happy growth!
What is good quality moss? What do you consider when buying moss? I recently bought a Better-Gro Sphagnum Moss-Long Fibered instead of the Better-Gro Orchid Moss - Premium Grade.
I initially had horrible luck trying to root cuttings in spag, so I hated it for the longest time. Since I've started experimenting with anthuriums (all 3 I have now are all in moss), I've really started to figure out how wet to keep the moss and I've had tons success with it so far!
Thank you for this video. My syngonium wasn't doing well so I tried putting it in sphagnum moss and it seems to be thriving but wasn't sure if it was OK to be kept in moss long term. Thank you, needed this video!
Hi Lulu, thank you for this video! I transferred all of my orchids into moss this year. I'm getting good at it. My question is this, I keep my orchids that can be in full sun under a covered deck because I'm afraid of what will happen. I'm scared if, for example, I went out for the day and there was a downpour, that something disastrous would happen. But I previously had them in those full sun conditions and they did great. What do you do about plants in mostly or all moss that have no protection from rain?
Thanks for sharing this video with us. This helped me a lot. One quick question: do you also use perlite with sphagnum moss? Some people do that and I am trying to understand why they do that. Tia!
Moss, with adding little bit of perlite, would help and I added to mine organic soil like happy frog,my plant syngonium seems happy with my mixed,I've been getting good root mix even a new leaf to me is excited to see. If roots go to the bottom, just add your soul mix at the bottom then place roots on top next then add more to cover roots
When using moss long term and watering, what if we can’t squeeze the water out of our nursery pots without them cracking? I’m worried about the moss being too wet and the plant rotting. Would I take out the plant and squeeze out the excess water? Im unsure as I wouldn’t want to damage/disturb the plant by taking out the plant.
Thank you so much for sharing Lulu, love your video btw!! I've been switching some of my plants from soil to water because I thought it would be easier and less messy, but I've been dying to grow my plants in sphagnum moss because I love the look of it because I've been doing some props in moss in my indoor greenhouses for awhile!! I will keep your advice in mind, thank you again!! And with your GORGEOUS Anthurium Regal, dies it have perlite under the moss at the bottom of the pot? And your air layering technique looks so interesting!!🥰🙏🏼🙏🏼
Fantastic video! Can you provide links to where you got all of your clear Plastic pots from tiny, tall, to large that you use? Also, links or product names to any safe, organic liquid fertilizer that I can buy in the United States? Thank you 🙏 again. I just subscribed. 🥰
Great video! How do you fertilise them though? Do you water a day before then water again with fertilizer, or do you just water and fertilise very, very low concentration at the same time? 🙏
I have many new propagated plants that I grew in water and want to put them in soil but I hear that it needs a transition. Is there a way to mix soil and moss together or do I need to start with the moss and then go to mossand soil please help me.
Thank you for this video! I’ve been contemplating propagations in spag or even a dirty spag to help with strength of the root system. After watching your video I decided to give it a go 😊 Love your content 💚
Thank you for this great video🤗 could write how you water plants that are in moss, are you watering from top or bottom, I’m considering to move some of my plants to moss. Also it will be nice to have video on how put plant into the moss 💚
Lulu’s Leaves hey I’m sorry but I just want to clarify. Did you change the way you water or was it maybe a mistake? I saw an earlier comment saying you top water but this one says bottom water. Do you do both?
One more I currently have a Billibap (aka Philodendron Billietiae X Atabapoense) that has rooted in moss. After watching I think I might leave it do you think I can use hydroponic nutrients? with the moss or should I use a soil liquid Fertilizer? Thank you for any help much appreshated.
Do you know anything about growing monstera deliciosa in moss only? I'm currently doing that, but I'm so scared. I have all of my orchids in moss and that is going extremely well. I can let my moss in cattleya and phalaenopsis go crunchy for a day or two before watering and they thrive
I started growing established plants in sphagnum after being too lazy to switch my PPP to soil at the end of last summer. It’s been doing fantastic and I’ve switched over about a dozen other plants since. Glad to see more people growing in sphag!💚
Also just got to the part where you mention fungus gnats and soil. The larvae feed on decaying matter/fungus/mold in the soil and the adults don’t really eat ☺️
i just repotted my orchid in the said moss ,i cut all the dead roosts and lightly packed it. do you think it will be okay ???? not a lot of roots left, i also soaked the moss first than squeezed it hard before i put it in the pot . @Lulu also do i still need a humidity tray i live in Vancouver bc
My philo grazielae started to THRIVE when I repotted it in sphag as an attempt to propagate it after I had to chop off the stem from the rotting root system due to rot (bad quality soil+overwatering). It loves it and just grows and grows. I hardly have to pay attention to the watering, just whenever the sphag looks dry. I never thought it could be used as a medium, usually I use it to prop only!
I got a Philodendron Splendid and it's in moss. I don't have any space in my cabinet and don't enjoy moss outside the cabinet, but was told not to repot it. What do you think?
What about Philodendrons (the one that grow big) even though they are babies right now? Also would "Liquid Dirt" be a good fertilizer for the Sphagnum Moss? Please let me know ASAP. Thanks.
Hey! Thank you for this informative video. I was curious and seems like there was other comments wanting to ask the same question. Maybe you can do a video about spaghum moss. "Worst to best Moss". I hear a lot from youtubers to use "good quality moss", but I still don't know what that means. Help please!! 💚
Not many videos on this topic!! I was wondering why because my plants love it and like you said NO FUNGUS GNATS !! The growth is a little slower compared to soil, but soil is even slower when you get pesky gnats laying their eggs 😒
Is algae on the moss bad for the plant at all? I noticed some green on mine and actually had no idea it was algae!! I thought it was just the color of the moss and I never noticed lol
Great topic! I didn’t know sphagnum moss could be a long term substrate. What kinds of plants do you think are best suited for moss? Thanks for sharing 💚
Soil contains nutrients, moss does not. I reckon it might be good for succulents or something. I use sphagnum moss for the gekkos and in my experience it dries out really quickly. Coconut husk contains the moisture longer. Just saying.
Great video, it answered all my questions. However after taking a sample of your resent uploads you'll likely get far more engagement if you figure out how to get stereo sound. As is, headphone and stereoscopic viewers are only getting audio from the right or left side depending on which upload. It's not the end of the world, it's just a bit jarring.

Thanks for sharing. I like your idea and will try the moss system on one of my plants.
Good day. What gorgeous plants, just a sight to behold. I haven't even seen many of them,
Thank you for sharing!! I love growing in moss.. Glad to see someone else growing their plants as well. Trial and error
Yess! Totally!
Thank you!
Can I top off the moss with something like gravel for stability of the plant?
sphagnum is the best!
When watering with liq fertilizer, do you let the water run through the entire substrate as you would with soil? Do you squeeze the moss out at all?

Another 'pro': sphagnum allows air to the roots also = happy plants
Soo informative. And that new regale leaf 😍 another killer video 💪🏻
I’m so glad it helped ❤️❤️❤️
You could pile the moss up against the stem of your Regale to get those little aerial root nubs to gro down into the pot :)

do you use nutrient solution or fertilizer when watering the plants in sphagnum moss?
Yay!!!!! Can’t wait to watch!
Hehehehe yay
Fungus nats lay eggs in soil mix, they hang out when soil is moist alot
Great video! I just started some propagation boxes working with sphagnum moss and I’ve already seen better results with root growth, cheers!
I grow my plants on aroid mix topped with a thick layer of sphagnum moss. This definitely keeps thrips and fungus gnats down!
Such a great informative video, thank you for talking about fertilizer!! 👍

Sphagnum moss works so much better than well drained soil.
