  • Can Household Plants Benefit from Leftover Orchid Fertilizer?
    With prices that are skyrocketing these days for orchid fertilizer, there’s no reason to be wasting it. With orchids as "light" feeders, not much fertilizer is necessary. As long as it’s an extremely weak dose and applied constantly, your orchid will do fine. More often than not, there will be leftover orchid fertilizer when you’re done watering. If you have other household plants, it’s a temptation to just water them with that same fertilized water.
    Are there any side effects of using orchid fertilizer for household plants?
    You can apply the fertilizer without harm to other household plants, as long as you aren’t applying it to a vegetable garden or produce that you’ll be consuming later on. Most household plants will require a lower dose of fertilizer, not the higher concentration of the solution necessary for orchids.
    Each plant has a specific requirement for nutrients, and some fertilizers can harm household plants if used in excess.
    In this article, you’ll read about what is in orchid fertilizer, what it does to the orchid, and the side effects of orchid fertilizer applied to household plants.

    What are a list of nutrients that orchids need in soil? Can you buy a ready made orchid soil containing the nutrients?

      Yes, absolutely! I had that same problem and lost some many roots because of it. I tend to want to provide too much care and end up hurting my orchids rather than helping them. The good thing is that we all learn with time. I apprecaite your comment! :)

    I just discovered that my boyfriend thinks I'm killing our plants by letting them dry out between watering. He's been "loving them to death" I mean drowning them! I was wondering why one of my orchid leaves was turning red and leathery from the outside edges. I took the orchid out of the pot and it was sopping wet and all the bark was soggy and turning white. I cut off some of the rotted roots. I rinsed the root system off and it's drying out hanging over an empty bucket. I'm going to grab new bark and orchid fertilizer from the store and washing the pot with soap. I'm really curious if I could burn the roots that I've just cut with fertilizer. Maybe I should wait to fertilize it after re-potting?

    Hi Amanda, what about Begonia plants, how often do I give fertilizer. Thank you for the wondering knowledge.

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  2 роки тому

      Hi Dorothy, Thank you for watching my videos. I appreciate it. I know a little about orchids, but I have no clue about other plants. I looked it up online, and from what I found, Begonias like 10-10-10 but only every three weeks. In this case, I wouldn't use the water to fertilize orchids with it every week, just once in while. Of course, this is what I found out online. I have no personal experience with Begonias.

    wowtch!! Got to make a "flushing" date. Using the weekly weakly tea fertilising method. So far, so good. One of my orchid stems are sprouting "growths". Will wait to see if the growths are roots, spikes or keikis!! So far, they are nubs.

    Could you use orchid left over water on say, a plumeria??

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  3 роки тому

      Hi Plants and Carrots, I don't know much about other specific plants, just orchids. I had a feeling the answer was yes, you can use the same water, but I wanted to be sure. So I had to look up your answer. :) Add yes, you can. As long as it is not very often, as in every watering, a little won't hurt.

    What BRAND of fertilizer do you personally use?

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  2 роки тому

      Hi Cliff, I have a rotating fertilizer chart where I use certain fertilizers at certain cycles in the orchids life. So I use about three to four different ones. If I had to pick one for a year round application, I would chose Organic Liquid Kelp. It stinks, but my orchids reacted better to it, more so than the other fertilizers. You don't need to buy one specific for orchids, just look for a balanced fertilizer of 20-20-20 or 0.3-0.3-0.3... As long as they are the same proportions. The one brand that I can say I had trouble with and don't like very much (unfortunately) is Better Grow. I find I had to dilute it too much and still the leaves turned yellow, no matter what the NPK concentration.

    any thoughts on Hoyas, if the water is prepared with orchid MSU feed?

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Tara, I really don't know much about Hoyas. I grow orchids well, but not other plants. LOL. I looked online to see what requirements they had on fertilizer and couldn't find much. What I did find is that they require an extremely low dose all the time. I would translate this into that a one time watering with the left-over fertilizer should be okay, but doing it in the long term might not be the best.
