Following the resignations of ministers Robert Halfon and James Heappey, Times columnist Robert Crampton and policy editor at the i newspaper remark on how news of ministers quitting barely makes the front pages.

Help The Conservative Party Achieve ZERO SEATS
What is the point of the Tory party? Low taxes? Low immigration? Fiscal responsibility and efficiency? We've have none of that. We've had the exact opposite.
I think the one and only point of the current tory party is to divert the maximum amount of public money to members, friends and donors.
Staying in power and keeping their snouts in the trough.
Very well put. Sums everything up in one very succinct comment.

Because most of it's been made legal.

‘People won’t vote for salty porridge, they need some sugar too’
They voted for austerity over, and over again. The Tories have proved that actually people will vote against their interests, so long as you create a spectre or villain that’s ‘actually’ the one ruining the country.
Labour under Starmer and Reeves seem VERY unlikely to do what Clem Attlee did in 1945 (ie to implement massive reform and pursue a progressive agenda. One of the presenters said:
*'We have a pensions system that we can't afford'* and *'We have a welfare system we can't afford.'*
I disagree PROFOUNDLY with this statement. The UK COULD afford all these things *IF the large and multinational companies were to be PROPERLY taxed.*
Economist and former (highly successful) Stock Market trader Gary Stevenson argues this very point (Gary's Economics, You Tube).
The tax burden should NOT fall on low and medium wage earners, but principly upon large and multinational companies, and with some extra tax levied on the super-rich.
The reality is that along with many of the world's leading economies, inequality is growing RAPIDLY whereby the super-rich major shareholders of large and multinational companies are becoming ever more obscenely rich at the expense not only of working class people, but of professional middle classes and indeed of governments themselves.
Not that I would expect the journalists employed by either Viscount Rothermere or - as in this case Rupert Murdoch - to acknowledge this.
You're not suggesting the sort of model they use in places like Germany, where they fritter away taxes on wasteful things like doctors, nurses, hospital beds, high speed railway networks and state pensions?

@@Slumberesque Civil servants? Experts from the field? Have appointments that are picked by select committees?
Currently you don't need to know anything or have any relevant experience to be in charge of immigration or housing or defence. You can be a landlord who owns multiple rentals and be in charge of deciding how you personally should be taxed. Why shouldn't teachers who know the challenges facing schools be put in charge of education instead of a privately educated MP who's only real skill is inheriting wealth and being able to campaign effectively for a safe seat?
Yes they won't necessarily be good at public speaking but their priority would be the job not Westminster infighting and fundraising for their campaigns.
@@Slumberesque Ministers appointed by the PM . Have their appointment ratified by the house perhaps.
Change the rules so they can take the stand in the commons if needs be or just have more grillings be select committees.
Would have the advantage of a) being able to pick from the best people in the country to perform the role. b) allow MPs and ministers to focus exclusively on their primary roles c) stop the insanity of reshuffles where ministries are seen as a career ladder for ambitious MPs rather than departments designed to solve problems.
The Peel Convention dictates ministers be recruited from the House of Commons or the House of Lords which basically means the minister has to be in government, a Minister has to be authorised by the King on recommendation of the prime minister. Very occasionally this convention is broken for short periods for various reasons including continuity when a minister loses his seat as MP or a special requirement is identified, in that case the minister may be granted a peerage. Most ministers are from the House of Commons and so are elected MPs.

So the answer is more tax ?What we are seeing is the end point of endless progressive taxation policies from an entire generation of politicians ( of all persuasions), runerging aroundwith stealth taxes etc. The ‘let’s redistribute’ mantra has resulted in a stagnant economy that has failed to grow and deliver opportunities ( and revenue) . Add this to a total hands off industrial policy ( or lack of) and being beholden to the city of London’s shorterism is it any wonder we can’t afford the going rate for NHS staff or even pothole free roads. Let’s not even face our military preparedness. You can’t keep shuffling money from the middle class to your pet projects and expect growth. Strategy for investment, education, planning, seed capital, this is what builds a Singapore or South Korea.
Labour say the tax burden is at a historic high. However I don't see why that should stop them from reducing the burden on those paid up to say £40k and progressively increasing tax on those earning say over £80k and upwards.
Under Thatcher the better off were paying up to 60 percent
Currently the better off are paying 63% over £100k and 45% above £125k. Crocodile tears I’m sure, but with ‘tax the Rich’ ( the actual Rich are offshore or paid in dividends) is just a distraction- average wages in the uk have stagnated and the only way to get money into working poor is via working tax credits and upping the personal allowance taking them out of tax burden. The politicians are quite happy to play frozen thresholds as £50k is ‘Rich’- I’m afraid it’s not on a global basis. The European/ scandi higher tax is distributed more evenly because people are paid more not kept poor.
