At 04:54 I had to blur out the video content. It was requested by Oculus to blur out the IPD adjustment software which I showed in this video. Oculus aren’t ready to show this yet but will be sharing more details on this soon []-)
Virtual Reality Oasis hi i have a pc with a good enough processor but only a gtx 1050 I’m torn between a oculus quest or a new graphics card and a an s do you have a recommendation?
@@godisgod7089, I would base that one if you want to play any other games as well. I would personally go straight to a 2070 or 2080 which will give you some future proofing and good performance. It also depends on your budget. Also, I don't think you can play steam vr games with the quest but you can with the rift s.
Oh wow, I totally saw you record this at PAX. We walked past the Oculus booth and I told my friend "hey that looks like the UA-cam VR guy I told you about."
@@VirtualRealityOasis I second his comment Mike. I first saw you on the Nvidia RTX launch event livestream (was that planned or just luck on your part?) and have been watching your channel ever since. Thanks for the great content and positive attitude, it's refreshing. You and the Tested guys are my go-tos for VR stuff nowadays. Cheers.
I've been looking everywhere for someone who got a chance with the Rift S and addressed the concerns people have, and this video hit them all. Keep up the good work!
A very welcome, refreshing and actually helpful review for the rift S. Been searching for such a review that doesn't omit anything, keeps you engaged and still keeps it under the 20 - 30 minute mark. Thank you.
Definitely looks nice.... but I agree with you, I'll hold on to my CV1 Rift (not to mention I have the sensors mounted so well, I am not looking forward at all to trying to get them OFF of the walls when the time comes)
I'm going the same way, keeping my Rift Tethered to the PC and probably getting the quest, probably two of them, and keeping them in the living room with a humongous play area.
@@DJHeroMasta I love command strips, but no clue what the paint is on my bedroom walls but the darn strips just will not stay stuck to the paint. #firstworldproblems.
@@Obiter3 I'm going to hold off a bit on the Quest. I really want one, but I want to know a few more details first. Mainly multiplayer... I'd assume it CAN do it since rec.Room is confirmed.... but so far I have yet to see a reviewer mention it. Especially cross platform. I'd love to be on my Rift and be able to hand a guest a Quest headset to play some multiplayer.
Big question, Why do they always get rid of the good stuff from version 1 and NOT incorporate it into V2? The earphones and the headset on the rift were 2 good things that should have been kept. Also the IPD adjustment on the original accommodates more people than the proposed S will.
i think its because they are testing everything out and we are the test dummies who buy these products :)) i have a rift and i agree they left all the cool things from the rift out on the S.
I don’t know why everyone’s so exited about the no sensors it just means the tracking is worse for the most part it’s okay but in first person shooters it’s awful
The tracking looks good for inside out, but still not as good as 4 external sensors. And the rest of it sounds awful. It's almost like they deliberately hamstrung it so that everybody buys the Quest instead. Absolute garbage upgrade after 3 years. Think I prefer the original Rift even now.
@@anonymous134y yeah have fun taking off/on your huge high quality headsets everytime you play/switch with someone/ check your phone. way too much of a hassle. is why no one removes the built in headphones even when they can
@@FirestoneX Don't get the HP headset unless you've tried and like WMR tracking. Personally, anything on the WMR platform is a don't buy for me. The controllers are unintuitive and clunky compared to oculus touch, and there are several games that you can't play/have issues with because of the lack of buttons on the controller (echo arena). Also the tracking is pretty bad. inside out roomscale that works was pretty cool like 4 years ago, but now it's a disadvantage in games. The headset tracking FOV is so low that I lose in Super Hot because I have to look at my hands to use them. The roomscale is picky enough that staring at the floor can throw it off. The sheer tracking speed is so low that I cannot play some beat saber songs. I wouldn't pay much more than $150 for a WMR headset.
@@JohnSmith-hy8jj Just out of curiosity, how many buttons does the Oculus Rift controllers have, I count 5 (if the control stick clicks in like I think). The reason I ask is because while the WMR headsets do have a lot of problems, the controller is actually the one thing I like about it, if games would only support the control stick as well, I think it would have the most options for button mapping.
@@austinnonr7908 I was complaining because I dislike the method of clicking one side of the circlepad for a button. This is usually only a problem when using revive (because oculus games are made for oculus controllers), and you can't get past the tutorial in echo arena, but other games, like rec room, require you to click up or down on the circle pad to do certain things. It feels like imprecise controls to me. Also, the touch controllers have exactly the same number of buttons as an xbox 360 controller.
Our VR community is very lucky with your honest, well made videos, not just reviews. Keep it up! You defiantly changed my opinion about the Rift S, and I consider buying it as my first PC VR headset. Greetings from Hungary!
The audio is really the biggest disappointment, the Koss drivers in the CV1 were the PERFECT headphones for VR. The large frequency spectrum and wide soundstage added so much immersion, earbuds can't even come close. Thankfully Sportapros are cheap & can be modded into something like the deluxe audio strap fairly easily.
yup audio alone makes this a nope for me. I have a friend who was waiting for updated headsets, but I will have to just tell him to get a CV1 since the tracking is better, sound is better and the higher resolution is not noticeable once you get used to it
I heard the socket on the S is a passthrough now so to me is prefered as I removed headphones from hmd on my cv1 within a day or two so would work with my setup better with this design with fullsize cans (srh1540's) I normally use or my custom iems ocassionally. Obviously no bundled headphone will work as well as proper ones that outprice a whole rift setup but no way those new ones are an upgrade over the old and if the socket in hmd isn't a true passthrough meaning one cable but other end can be connected to desktop headphoneamp/dac and so on and is just a stereo out from rift source it will be poor choice for folks like me too. Either way the audio is lesser if that is case. As for the other things I've gone from 90% certain I'd get the S over competitors one to certain I won't touch this. I am dedicated to picking up second unit for a family member so isn't upgrade fever but real need for another hmd but still wont touch this and will likely get them a cv1 when I was going to get this and give them my current cv1. Tracking issue worries me for a lot of stuff I play as I do put my hands close to face a lot in a few games so he was wrong there. Also the accuracy in stuff I play sitting with slight movements I want tracked precisely like DCS may be lacking accuracy. Also I do swivel my head quickly in many titles like that so again just because the dude in the vid doesn't do it means nothing. The controllers are terrible design compared to old ones. Just seems like they dropped the ball with the S big time looking at this.
Well I wouldn't take his word on the audio. Not because I don't believe him, but bc I don't think this is a fair assessment. No set of speakers sound good at max and again he wasn't in an ideal environment.
@@naoki95957 Oculus made a mistake with the CV1 by including such incredible headphones from the get-go; Few people opted for their first-party earbuds, and JBL was the only third-party to make any replacements, which everyone agreed were massively inferior to the stock CV1 headphones. Having bad audio on the S is by design, so they can both sell more products and push more partnerships with headphone companies.
Already sold my Rift for the glasses support alone. I’ve got a big skull and big glasses and it’s been a constant struggle. Can’t wait to finally be comfortable.
Due to Oculus discontinuing Rift sales on their website in late March I’d say it’s very safe to assume Rift S is being released at F8 on May 1st, I don’t think it would make any sense to spend more than a month only selling Oculus GOs.
Awesome video. Thanks for taking the time to do all of this. Everything from setting up the camera for a nice shot, speaking louder so we can clearly hear you etc. It's what makes your videos stand out from the rest.
I understand why enthusiast are not impressed with rift S, but for newcomers it looks like a great way to start. So far i have PSVR which i played hundreds of hours and I love it. I built new rig for Christmas and Rift S feels like great way to enter PCVR. Big plus for me is the halo and slide design like PSVR to accomodate for glasses, because without them I see VR badly. I will be buying rift S because it looks great, price is good and Iam really excited for it.
I saw you playing yesterday at PAX East! Glad to hear your thoughts on it! I'm hoping to get my hands on one Sunday to see how everything feels. Enjoy the rest of the show!
I just got mine and I'm pretty happy with it. It's a fantastic increase in visual quality. The guardian system is awesome and a huge improvement over the original. The fit is what I like best...it just feels snug and comfortable...very supportive. I wasn't bothered by the loss of the adjustment slider. I'm absolutely pleased with my purchase. I have an Oculus Rift as well...but I've given that to my son. I recently have been having issues with my near sight and I was worried everything would be fuzzy without reading glasses and it was awesome that this wasn't the case!
@@edteach3r HP Reverb has 2kx2k resolution on each screen, but we will wait to see if it is required to have a nasa computer to run it. I am also going to buy vr for my racing rig, but i will wait a few weeks to see what the other sets that is coming now are.
Odyssey has a soldered headset cable, which should be a major concern to people buying it. If you damage the cable or its connector... well connection since it lacks a connector, then you need a new headset or a pretty expensive repair.
As an Oculus fanboy, I can't wait to get my hands on both of the headsets after using the Rift CV1 for years. Thanks a bunch for the first impressions, Mike! Your videos are a pleasure to watch.
For me the lack of over ear headphones is the deal breaker. The bump in resolution is nice, don't care much about the inside out tracking (although it's a great step forward) because I have a 3 sensor setup, but these things don't outweigh the crappy audio. The original Rift headphones are the best headphones I've ever used, so ditching them is a no go.
jetstream01 same. It just makes everything way too cumbersome. I’m keeping a close eye on the competition. If pimax sorts their stuff out, I’ll just hop to them as if I’m going to accept lcd blacks, might as well do it with a good fov.
@@ffdfdfdfdfdfdfdf absolutely. The Pimax headset seems like it's really the best headset out at this point. My GPU will probably struggle to run the 5k one though (have a 1080).
I know this is ancient, but if the CV1's headphones are SERIOUSLY the best headphones you've ever heard... you need to fucking buy yourself a pair of decent headphones, STAT! -_- Go buy a pair of planar magentic $130 HiFiMan HE400se's and properly blow your brain out your butt.
Watching every Rift S video I can find. THIS is the one I have been waiting for. In depth hands on review clearly stating that, while not the upgrade CV1 owners have bee waiting for, it is great for expansion of the PCVR market. Thanks
Great review as always. Glad you went over the ipd adjustment. In your opinion, who is the Rift S targeted at? I do not think I am going to upgrade over the cv1. I love the built in headphones with cv1. Cannot wait until your review of the Quest, that is the one I am really looking forward to purchase.
unfortunately software IPD doesn't work the same as in hardware, and apparently it ruins the experience compared to properly adjusted hardware IPD. It may only be noticeable beyond a certain deviation from the norm IPD, but we don't know exactly where, and even if it's not particularly noticeable it's still there. palmerluckey.com/i-cant-use-rift-s-and-neither-can-you/
Been a rift owner since 2016, loved the CV1. You confirmed some of my biggest fears about Rift S. I bought my brother a PS4, and I hated the halo design because it shook on my head and 10 minutes into the experience I had to rip off the headset I was so frustrated with how it wore, compared to my CV1 Rift. I didn't say anything to my brother, although he did notice how annoyed and outrageously pissed I was as I yanked off the headset, of course I wanted him to love it so I didn't tell him what set me off, but it was the wobbly headset. Seeing the Rift S do this, and not being able to spend more than 10 minutes in PSVR because of it, really, really makes me SCARED of how PISSED I might get playing Rift S. I wear glasses, and it can be a struggle with glasses getting them into CV1 Rift, but I had bought a faceplate from VR Cover for eyeglasses which does make it alot easier, and that wobbie headset, just won't work. The second thing was, you spend the first bit of the video covering how horrible the new speaker system would be, and how cubersome it would be getting into VR with your own headphones, and then plus you got a stupid dangling cord in your way, like OH MY GOD THAT IS HORRIBLE. So we swapped out having a cumbersome one time sensor set up, for a every time cumbersome put on the headset set up, just wow. I'm so mad I want to like this dang headset, but I got this gut feeling I'm going to hate it very very much. I wish they would make it where they offered different kinds of detachable headset fits to attach the HMD to, so that you could either attach the halo style, or ballcap style fit to your HMD, and builtin headphones, should be a must for a pc vr system.
@Gaius Marius I play beat saber alot and I don't notice any spasms and I think external trackers are better because of the 360 tracking which is better for fps games
Im in canada and was very sad to see its not here (yet) Im going to get a rift s (first vr buy) and piece the index together as it becomes available, probalby starting with the index controllers. I need those controllers.
Thanks for your honest opinion Mike. I’d not want to loose the sensor tracking of the current Rift, just for a small gain in resolution. The headphones 🎧 seems a certain deal breaker to me, as a good pair of over the ear is going to have a fairly long cable. Immersion can make or break an experience, and sound really plays a big part in that, guessing with the tinny in strap ones that you get no spacial sound? I’ll certainly be happy to wait for a more high end version. If it has to be tethered because of the resolution and bandwidth I can understand that, but PC gamers want to loose the cord, without having to buy third party solutions. It seems that if they took the positives from both headsets and put a much higher oled or equivalent screen in they would be on to a winner. Rift S is a no for me.
FattyWatty123 Ye I got that. The problem is most good hi end headphones have a 1-3m cable. Which means for Rift S use your going to have to coil the wire up somehow. Even if you use headphones with a shorter cable, anything dangling could break the experience.
Meow Mix 😃 If they are they should remove the term add on, and offer it as a free upgrade to any person who has purchased a headset. One per headset, to stop the savvy claiming to many and putting them on eBay.
Lol it's funny how bad this take had aged with hindsight. 🤣 The Oculus Insight inside-out tracking is MILES BETTER than the old external IR cameras the CV1 used. Like it's not even close.
Just received my Rift S last week (my first VR hmd). I’ve played about 8 hrs in Elite Dangerous, so the controllers really aren’t used much. Headset is comfortable and Zi agree about the lack of bass in the audio. One thing I’ve noticed is lack of eyestrain. Having had LASIK eye surgery I tend to get DES if I spend to much time looking at computer screens (Ipads are the worst). It simply doesn’t occur with the VR hmd - my theory is that because you are constantly looking around and changing apparent focus points is this mitigates against DES. I do find it very front heavy and cannot seem to tighten the headband enough to keep it from slipping upward in back which puts the weight on my nose. My hair is thick and I guess it just moves up with the headband in back. The experience in Elite Dangerous is just phenomenal, the scale and immersion is so much greater than when playing on the panel it has to be experienced to be believed. People susceptible to motion sickness should be aware that rapid ship/vehicle/aircraft maneuvers may make you dizzy.
I'm glad VR is beginning to take a more aggressive push into the market, this headset looks great but it is $400 and that's a good chunk of money regardless. It's also nice to see Oculus going back to PCVR. I have the original Rift and I absolutely love it, hopefully, my touch controllers don't break anytime soon because my hands are pretty large for them as is and the quest controllers are a bit smaller. I still wished they supported external sensor tracking to compliment the built-in tracking as my three sensor set up provides flawless tracking.
The latest price of CV1 was $350 so Rift S seems to be more expensive, but for a proper 360 roomscale setup for CV1 you also need a 3rd sensor, probably a dedicated pci-e usb card, usb extension cables and wall mounts. That pushes up the CV1 price to $450-500 easy. So at the end Rift S as a complete roomscale system is in fact cheaper than CV1. And $399 is the introductory price, I bet Oculus will cut it down for xmas sales.
The software implementation of IPD isn't quite a real IPD adjustment, merely a shift in depth production. Something like that, far as I could tell reading some stuff. So while it may make it less jarring for those with a farther out IPD, it will still be tough on them over time compared to a headset with hardware IPD. 400 bucks you'd hope it'd work optimally for everyone, so I guess for those outside the IPD they're still better served by the (discontinued) original.
I would like to hear about the experiences of people with an IPD around 70mm, because I'm also quite concerned that it is not the best choice for me. Software IPD adjustment is not enough. And all the youtubers I know have nearly average IPD.
I move houses frequently and it's really good to see a headset that hits home for me. I think it's time for me to retire my old CV1 and get the S. It also is nice to mention that even smaller play spaces can easily get good roomscale tracking.
Completely agree with your assessment after playing with it at pax myself. It is a perfect headset for newcomers, but it is not really enough to justify an upgrade for people who are happy with the rift such as myself. It seems like another option right now rather than a full on upgrade, ill be waiting till the next gen myself if I buy another headset. Too bad I didn't catch you there on the floor, I was hanging around the indie booths myself. My only question is how it tracks in rooms that are not an ideal setup. Of course on the show floor they had empty square rooms to give the best and safest experience on the floor, but I wonder what happens when a few irregular room shapes are thrown at it.
Yeah, I’m intrigued how both Rift S and Quest are going to handle my green screen wall and floor as it will have little to hook onto in terms of tracking. I’ll report back as soon as I get them in the office []-)
Yea I’m definitely gonna upgrade.the external sensor are always moved and I have no where to mount a third sensor. I always have to reset tracking cause my sensor always get moved. Plus I can give my bro the old oculus n we can both play now.
Thank you so much for making this video. I need a Rift replacement (the only thing that can save mine now is MAYBE plastic epoxy) and I got really excited for this to be the replacement, but then people made me feel anxious about it and gave me second thoughts. The thing is, a lot of other reviewers purely looked at it from an upgrade perspective instead of someone who either needs to replace or hasn't gotten a headset yet and you approached that perspective perfectly. I am now so much more confident because of you about purchasing the Rift S. Now I know it's pretty much exactly what I need.
*Upgrade:* + Resolution + Insight Tracking (easy to set up) + Adjustable lenses distance *Downgrade:* - Audio - Halo head strap - Hz - Controllers (loved to let the old ones "hang" on my hands on the tracking rings to let my hands "breathe") - [For Now] Incompatible wit the original trackers *Unchanged, but very much wanted:* × Full body tracking × FoV I thought I'll give a pass on the S, and now I'm sure I'll do.
I’m not specifically excited about the Rift S for myself. I got my Rift almost a year ago and I love it, and I feel no need to replace it. But I am excited about for all the new comers to VR. I think to ease of a no sensor set up is going to make it even more appealing than it already is. Rift S and Quest are going to be what makes VR explode with users, and I can’t wait to watch that happen.
Sounds great. That's pretty much what people have been saying all along. Not a Rift 2.0 but great for new adopters. Although you seem to be convinced that the software IPD actually works well. Now that would be something of a different opinion. But who really knows, is your IPD different from Average?
The halo from the PSVR is one of its best assets. So glad they decided to do it for the Rift S. I will be getting the Quest (don't have PC) but still if I had a choice for PCVR setup this looks like a worthwhile update.
I agree. I was taken aback when he said he preferred the straps of the original Rift. I find the PSVR much more comfortable. I'm thinking of buying the S for the halo alone.
I have a question. I dont have any kind of vr Should i wait for the rift S to come out and then buy it Or Should i buy original rift from amazon or something like that Because i see pros and cons in both
Top video mate. Gave me all the info I needed to know that I will hold on to my Rift until the 2.0 release, whenever that is. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Brian Scotland only point i disagree with, he thinks its not worth upgrading, but having no sensors is a game changer, you can go all wireless with a laptop.
Very good. Thank you. I just wish that they'd kept the same controllers, same headset, same earphones but upgraded the screen and the tracking. It'll do a good job for what I want it for, but I loved my Rift so much that I didn't really want to leave it. I just hate screen door effect
I'm totally fine with all the trade-offs or shortcomings of the Rift S, EXCEPT the audio. The headphones on the CV1 are so good and I don't want to fiddle with putting on headphones. 80hz, fine. Possible tracking issues with the controllers in very few positions, fine. Headphones that'll probably fall of and an extra cable, no can do. Love the Insight tracking and stereoscopic video passthrough though.
Sadly I didn’t get to try the pass through mode although I recently tried it on Quest and it was very cool! I hope Oculus release an accessory to somehow improve the audio solution []-)
I thought exactly the same thing, but, I just might actually like that it's off ear and there's always something a tiny bit unnerving to me about being deaf and blind to the real world.
I own a rift touch but I'm picking this up because the ability to bring this to a friend's house or a party without setting up the sensors is so awesome. I'll just sell my touch for 200 bucks and pick this up for half price.
Exactly! Many Rift owners were angry because they thought it would be an upgrade, but that was not ever said. This is more of a 'refresh' model, with several improvement, and a few compromises. The Rift 2 is still in development.
I will say it does target one of the most annoying things to me as a Rift owner (that almost has me convinced to look towards the vive options) which is that there's no unsightly wires going to cameras all over the room. By far the most ugly things in my bedroom are those wires.
This changed my mind - I was skeptical and unsure of if Rift or Rift S was better, and now everything is clear - I like Rift S, it is useful for its different reasons and same with Rift. Oculus made a good decision. But I still hope they are continuing to develop the Rift 2.0 - I can't wait to see what they have in store next!
Yep still want to go for this headset, tho for the hardcore VR fans, want to state that i am new to VR, so for me it be a nice step in, and i choose it over the quest because i don't want to be limited by an enclosed ecosystem, i want PC VR, The only Negative i have about the Rift S , is the price, sure its 399 USD, but i am in Europe, and in Europe it will be 499 EURO's which is 557,11 USD. With that price Oculus might fail to bring VR to the masses over in Europe, because about 500 Euro's is still to expensive , for example for 609 Euro, i can get the original Vive starter kit but yeah i don't want to mess with outside in tracking, so yeah, love it, but my wallet does not. then again, just means i need to save more. and it be a bit longer until i can actually buy it, and by then maybe news about a rift 2 will be out :)
Martin Requiem welcome to the awesome world of VR! You are going to love it! I wouldn’t worry too much about the rift 2, I would say that’s 2-3 years out. Facebook had an article today stating that they would work on content for the next 2 years. I would also guess that in 2-3 years mobile chips will have more power and you will see FB drop PC VR and focus on the quest 2 only
@@FalconLX911 thanks, im not in the world of VR yet, i just saw the store where i was planing to buy it later scaled up from 499 euro's to 599 euro's thats over 670 USD... too much for me , but once it is released ill look how much the total cost will be if i buy it directly from oculus instead of a retailer
Welcome to Vr. Its like that $399 for both quest to rift will go down in the next few months. I will be getting the quest Because of vrchat, rec room, beat saber, nostos, robo recall.
I'm fairly certain you cant run vr on a mac, but you can try the vive test tool from the vive website, or try to run the oculus compatibility check tool
" the best possible visual experience." I've been waiting for this video from Mike and that's all I need to hear. Thanks Mike, enjoy the rest of your time in Beantown!
I told you on your comment on the Rift 2 Trailer that I’d be looking out for the review and I did. This definitely confirmed that this will be the headset I pick up unless something drops at a similar price point that just blows this away.
I got an msi g65 with rtx 2060, it is a thin gaming laptop, if i can get a thin laptop case and an extension power bank, it would be so comfertable to wear, i can be very comfortable with my movement, Here is one cool scenario, playing vr games at work during break. Imagine that, or playing vr in your freaking car, there are some games u can play whilst sitting. Year 2035 scenario would be like, swimming in the pool and playing space game, you can pretend you're floating in space, with the water resistant headset and scuba kit, that would be epic. Laptops are getting powerful now, only problem is battery life, while gaming battery could drain in an hour max. But in time i think that'll change, intel is making 15 watt cpus that are so powerful now, imagine in a year, we will have 7nm chips from intel, by then the 45watt i7 8750h will be replaced with a 15 watt i9 h version. This will definitely boost the battery life during gaming, i am hoping that arm also produce powerful enough GPU that compete with nvidia in laptops soon too. So in 3 years, i will be rocking my backpack for 4 hours strait, its gonna be the start of the real oasis. We can only pray that it goes that way, but i think its nothing impossible with the currently technology.
@@DemocracyDecoded it might be bearable but you are getting the same screen as Gen1 3DOF Mobile VR. $400 is way over priced, Facebook is just looking for the high marigins at this point since the display is the most expensive part. The O+ came out in 2018. It is 300$ and it rocked 1600x1440 90hz OLED display. These Rift S prices don't add up.
Thanks Mike. Great review. You've answered the questions we were all asking relating to our concerns. And thank you for being honest regarding the relative value if upgrading from CV1. All the best.
Great vid Mike! One issue I could see with a Rift 2 getting released now, is that we would have a hard time running it even with high end pc's! I have a i7 8086K 32gb ram and a RTX 2080ti, and I can't run all games in maxed out settings on my CV1 without ASW kicking in. Only on old games, or really well optimized ones.. .
It's not a Rift 2. It's a refresh therefore Rift S and not Rift 2. Running those games with slightly reduced settings (mainly super sampling, in games often just called resolution), will provide a much better visual experience than with the current Rift on 'max settings'
@@joshuadevries7096 Yes I know. I wrote this for the guys that wanted to see a Rift 2 instead of the S. I thought this at first too when I heard the specs of Rift S, but starting to think this might be a smart move of Oculus in current time, and the best way to go. Just really sad they didn't put headphones on it..
My only concern was the IPD and you tackled that for me. THANKS! I have the lower IPD as well and it was a concern. The fact it doesn't require the additional sensors being mounted gives me a reason to buy this. I just HATE the sensors being mounted with wires running back to the PC.
As a current rift owner, not having constellation cameras and the setup that that comes with those is worth it alone, but also having glasses accommodations and the increase in resolution (even if it's just slight) is enough to convince me. Not to mention passthrough? I'm in. The important thing to note here, and I think this is where A LOT of the hate is coming from, is that the Rift S is not the "next" Rift headset. This is exactly the same scenario as when the Xbox 360 Slim was released. It wasn't the next Xbox, it was just an improved middle step. Hardware's been tweaked slightly, design's been tweaked slightly, but overall it's the same headset. I can understand why the hardest of hardcore VR enthusiasts might not be on board, and I do consider myself a hardcore VR enthusiast, but I think it's worth it for me. I'll likely "side-grade" to the Rift S and gift my current Rift headset to my parents who have wanted VR since I first demo'ed the Rift with them. Out of all my concerns with the Rift S, only one remains: the audio. However, I'm sure the audio is likely just fine in a conventional private-home-use situation that just about all of us will be using the headset in. I can see it failing in a "party" situation where there is a lot of outside noise to pollute your VR experience, but for the most part I think it'll be fine.
They were probably able to cut a good $80-100 off the final price tag by just integrating the audio into the headband. What's wrong with just using your own headphones? Tie the cords up and tuck it out of sight and you're good.
Thanks for the review, and that's a great tidbit there about the new touch controllers being reverse compatible for current-gen rift owners. For those of us who don't plan on moving to Rift S it's nice to know that we can buy the new touch controllers if we have issues with our current equipment. Hopefully they'll optionally sell the headsets separately from the controllers if later down the line someone needs/wants to replace their HMD after having already replaced their controllers.
I can't wait to buy this on the first day it's released! Going to be a great addition for my new 2060 oc pro/r7 2700x build! Thank you for the great information, I have an ipd of 59 so I'm very pleased to hear I can use this headset with great visuals!!
@@VirtualRealityOasis I currently own a PlayStation VR headset but this will be my first pcvr headset. I love the psvr but it does have downsides like really low resolution and a not so good tracking method, I mainly got it to make sure I could handle VR for long periods of time and I didn't have a PC capable of VR at the time so PlayStation was my gateway into this amazing tech. This will be a major upgrade for me in the realm of virtual reality!
same i just got a gtx 1070 and ive been waiting for a rift s with inside out tracking so i don't have to deal with sensor placements and usb cards, this'll be my first pc vr headset and not just some $20 phone attachment :)
I think this is the headset I’m going to buy. I’ve been deciding between the vive and the rift S and I think I’ll be most happy with this one. I own an Oculus Go and I’m already extremely impressed with it and I’d like to stay in the oculus family ;)
You should feel amazing about that. I wish my headset had less time on it. I don't think they will support my product if it fails a year from now. I don't even think they will have parts for us to buy to replace if something goes wrong....
Ahhhh I wish I would've thought to ask you to put the headset on, close one eye, then shift it a bit side to side to see how the image looked with your pupil in different spots relative to the lens, emulating IPD differences.. :/
@@MsHojat Depending on your IPD (inter-pupillary distance; the distance between your eyes), your eyes will look through different parts of the lens as Rift S doesn't feature IPD adjustment (like Rift does), so the lenses are fixed in a position of 64mm apart (64mm being the average human IPD). This fixed IPD has quite a few of us with a very wide or narrow IPD worried, because there's a chance our eyes won't line up with the clear centre of the lens, making it impossible for us to use the headset. By closing one eye and moving the headset from side to side, Mike could've seen how the lenses look off-center gotten & how the image looks with non-average IPDs.
Good afternoon Mike thank you for showing off the rift S at PAX East in Boston. I noticed that dead and buried 2 is not there it is one of the games I am looking for to playing on this headset along with Along with Beat Sabre. Have a good day a good weekend and a safe flight back to England.
I'm definitely getting this headest. As an owner of the original I'm super excited about not having to use the pylons. Besides if we want vr to get better we have to throw money at it and make it worth their time.
@@anonymous134y I VERY strongly disagree. I couldn't wait to get my hands on Go when it got announced primarily because of the lcd screen. I already had Rift and Gear VR but badly wanted Go for movies. I find Go's lack of sde and sharpness way better than Rift display. Forgot to add, the lcd in Rift S is a major force for me to buy it despite having reservations about tracking. Even Mike wants Rift S for the display.
@@hussain-x Ok well you have seen some pretty bad screens in the past. No wonder the Go screen looked good. You are getting the same lenses and display panel as a $200 headset. Do you not see an issue with that? It is literally the worst display since the launch of PCVR. It's not subjective, it's a fact. O+ has 1600x1440 OLED 90z display for $300
Honestly, I wasn’t sold on this headset at all, but this video sold it for me. The adjustable front part for glasses is a big deal for me. It would let me take out my contacts at night when my eyes are tired and use my glasses. The 2nd thing is the psvr wasn’t comfortable for my big head as it would pinch my temples, but the front inner part of this HMD looks to be wider on the padding which I hope would fix that big issue as well. And perhaps my favorite feature is not having to deal with those god forsaken sensors ever again! I hated setting those up all the time. Now I just need to join the club of selling my original rift. Haha.
At 04:54 I had to blur out the video content. It was requested by Oculus to blur out the IPD adjustment software which I showed in this video. Oculus aren’t ready to show this yet but will be sharing more details on this soon []-)

@@godisgod7089, I would base that one if you want to play any other games as well. I would personally go straight to a 2070 or 2080 which will give you some future proofing and good performance. It also depends on your budget. Also, I don't think you can play steam vr games with the quest but you can with the rift s.

@@VirtualRealityOasis I second his comment Mike. I first saw you on the Nvidia RTX launch event livestream (was that planned or just luck on your part?) and have been watching your channel ever since.
Command Strips FTW!
Haha, wow. Sounds like some quality paint you have there mate!
Also the IPD adjustment on the original accommodates more people than the proposed S will.
i think its because they are testing everything out and we are the test dummies who buy these products :)) i have a rift and i agree they left all the cool things from the rift out on the S.
the audio is the only flaw for me but i agree with you the earphones should just be kept
@@alexsp7086 I think this headset is meant for people who don't have a rift or any vr headset. I think they know that rift owners won't upgrade.
Great honest none biased review as usual, and totally agree with you. Am gonna wait for rift 2.0
same here. the Rift S seems nice for people new into PC VR, but for people who have a PC VR headset already, it's not worth the "upgrade".
the question is tho, how long?
This sounds like a good buy if you don't have the original Oculus rift yet
Sometimes I think its better to be a VR UA-camr than a VR Developer.
Sold my Rift CV1 and got this, no regrets the increase in resolution and no sensors sells it for me.
I'm thinking about buying this as my first VR set, can you tell me what is your IPD and does it work well without physical IPD adjustments?
What difference between with sensors and without
Do it feel different?
I don’t know why everyone’s so exited about the no sensors it just means the tracking is worse for the most part it’s okay but in first person shooters it’s awful
jack hewitt the difference is you don’t need to set up base stations and the tracking isn’t as good
The dropping of the built in headphones is a deal breaker for me.
at least with headphone you can plug in a better pair unlike that awful cheap ass screen. There hasn't been a display that bad since 2017
The tracking looks good for inside out, but still not as good as 4 external sensors. And the rest of it sounds awful. It's almost like they deliberately hamstrung it so that everybody buys the Quest instead. Absolute garbage upgrade after 3 years. Think I prefer the original Rift even now.
@Rupert Pupkin MY ears are not compatible with "ear buds".

Since I have a oculus go and a wmr, I have to say I'm more excited about the Quest.
I want to try out some keep large room games with the Quest. An untethered vr headset sounds awesome.
@@james.lambert Arggg. I just found out about the HP reverb. And Steam just announced a new headset.... what to buy.. WHAT TO BUY!?!?!
Oh, I didn't know Koss made the CV1 headphones.
I've used Koss SB/45 headsets for donkeys because they're comfy, cheap yet sound fantastic.

Its targeted at people like me who are looking to purchase our first HMD.
unfortunately software IPD doesn't work the same as in hardware, and apparently it ruins the experience compared to properly adjusted hardware IPD. It may only be noticeable beyond a certain deviation from the norm IPD, but we don't know exactly where, and even if it's not particularly noticeable it's still there.
palmerluckey.com/i-cant-use-rift-s-and-neither-can-you/
@@VirtualRealityOasis It's also a tempting buy for WMR users looking for an upgrade.
I have a Rift and I will be upgrading to this, the reduction in SDE and god rays, the res bump and no more sensors is enough of a reason for me

This was a great video! I don't even want a Rift S... Still liked the video! Can't wait to see what quest has to offer as well!
This is the first review that sounds more honest and less disappointed.
Headphone jack is on the headset if you with to use headphones
FattyWatty123 Ye I got that. The problem is most good hi end headphones have a 1-3m cable. Which means for Rift S use your going to have to coil the wire up somehow. Even if you use headphones with a shorter cable, anything dangling could break the experience.
@@HlspwnsWorld It's not ideal, but Oculus has hinted they'll make an addon headphones accessory.
The refresh rate is not an issue but the resolution is very important to me, i'll wait for Valve Index
Are you happy with the 2.5x price difference?

I’ll report back as soon as I get them in the office []-)
its only an upgrade for me because im not very happy with my rifts tracking

I thought I'll give a pass on the S, and now I'm sure I'll do.
So is it worth it? I got a rift so i was wondering if i got to upgrade to this
id love to get it if it would allow oculus sensor tracking along with the headset sensor tracking
My Rift bricked during a firmware update and I was leaning towards trying the Vive, but you changed my mind. Great video!
So I was actually interested in upgrading my original Rift. Now I'm not. 😂😂😂
If anything his IPD is smack at average
Average is 65 he is 60 so no
The halo from the PSVR is one of its best assets.
I dont have any kind of vr
Should i wait for the rift S to come out and then buy it
Or
Should i buy original rift from amazon or something like that
Because i see pros and cons in both
Do you have a powerful computer? If not. I would get the Oculus Quest.
Top video mate. Gave me all the info I needed to know that I will hold on to my Rift until the 2.0 release, whenever that is. Thank you and keep up the good work!
I agree with all your points. I know I can trust your reviews and way of looking at things.
Valve Index is top choice up to now - I just worry about the price
I'm totally fine with all the trade-offs or shortcomings of the Rift S, EXCEPT the audio. The headphones on the CV1 are so good and I don't want to fiddle with putting on headphones. 80hz, fine. Possible tracking issues with the controllers in very few positions, fine. Headphones that'll probably fall of and an extra cable, no can do. Love the Insight tracking and stereoscopic video passthrough though.
Sadly I didn’t get to try the pass through mode although I recently tried it on Quest and it was very cool! I hope Oculus release an accessory to somehow improve the audio solution []-)
you mean 80 Hz? 72 Hz is the Quest
@@maskofman7350 yes, thanks
I thought exactly the same thing, but, I just might actually like that it's off ear and there's always something a tiny bit unnerving to me about being deaf and blind to the real world.
After a while the ribben messes up where the right side audio useless any how
I really wish they were released today on the 3rd anniversary because I can’t wait to try this out, and hopefully it comes with some good games
I think I'll save my hype for Valve Index
£399 vs £919. Know which I'm going for
I own a rift touch but I'm picking this up because the ability to bring this to a friend's house or a party without setting up the sensors is so awesome. I'll just sell my touch for 200 bucks and pick this up for half price.
basically no substential improvement, not aimed at rift owner, just targing new one time buyers
@@SpinningDoors Except for you my dear...lol

This changed my mind - I was skeptical and unsure of if Rift or Rift S was better, and now everything is clear - I like Rift S, it is useful for its different reasons and same with Rift. Oculus made a good decision. But I still hope they are continuing to develop the Rift 2.0 - I can't wait to see what they have in store next!
Yep still want to go for this headset, tho for the hardcore VR fans, want to state that i am new to VR, so for me it be a nice step in, and i choose it over the quest because i don't want to be limited by an enclosed ecosystem, i want PC VR,
The only Negative i have about the Rift S , is the price, sure its 399 USD, but i am in Europe, and in Europe it will be 499 EURO's which is 557,11 USD.
With that price Oculus might fail to bring VR to the masses over in Europe, because about 500 Euro's is still to expensive , for example for 609 Euro, i can get the original Vive starter kit but yeah i don't want to mess with outside in tracking,
so yeah, love it, but my wallet does not. then again, just means i need to save more. and it be a bit longer until i can actually buy it, and by then maybe news about a rift 2 will be out :)
За съжаление това е така. В Европа цените са доста над тези в Америка. В моята страна цената беше два пъти по-висока от шлема в Америка.

I preordered it yesterday, and I plan on playing BeatSaber and VRchat. This will be my first vr headset and I can't wait to play :)
Your the best for when I need some VR reviews and info. Is Mac PCVR ready?
No men, im sorry but you’ll need a graphic card, at least an 1050ti
I'm fairly certain you cant run vr on a mac, but you can try the vive test tool from the vive website, or try to run the oculus compatibility check tool
Shoot. Does the Nolo CV1 work?
" the best possible visual experience." I've been waiting for this video from Mike and that's all I need to hear. Thanks Mike, enjoy the rest of your time in Beantown!
people are going to wait on preordering it now that the vive index is just around the corner.

I told you on your comment on the Rift 2 Trailer that I’d be looking out for the review and I did. This definitely confirmed that this will be the headset I pick up unless something drops at a similar price point that just blows this away.
I think it's so worth upgrading for because no sensors means u can rock a laptop backpack and go all wireless
I got an msi g65 with rtx 2060, it is a thin gaming laptop, if i can get a thin laptop case and an extension power bank, it would be so comfertable to wear, i can be very comfortable with my movement,
Here is one cool scenario, playing vr games at work during break.
@Sharif and $1000 PC minimum entree fee was another, which they also solved.
well the 1280x1440 80hz LCD display is the worst display of any VR headset since the launch of VR in 2016.
send it true but its bearable
@@RVRCloset Oh i see now i got it. Yeah..lack of headphones really sucks, guess the lenovo partnership was to expensive to put in headphones for 399$
@@joshuadevries7096 Yeah.. Hope they will add an option to buy headphones as an add on later!
you just flexing my guy... lol
My only concern was the IPD and you tackled that for me. THANKS! I have the lower IPD as well and it was a concern. The fact it doesn't require the additional sensors being mounted gives me a reason to buy this. I just HATE the sensors being mounted with wires running back to the PC.
I'm not Jealous Mike! :)
What do you think is better in comfort rift or rift s
I feel that rift s feels better but I like my built in headphones so I dont feel like upgrading
Fantastic review bud! Thanks for going in depth with it.
not having the original style speakers is a deal breaker for me.
The original speakers was one of the best features on the original rift, the designers don't have feedback of the users?.
They were probably able to cut a good $80-100 off the final price tag by just integrating the audio into the headband. What's wrong with just using your own headphones? Tie the cords up and tuck it out of sight and you're good.
Because not all decent headsets/cans will fit over that massive headband. It's not an upgrade to rift, it just cheapens the build for profit.
im upgrading from the rift mainly for the sensors, because I do not want to buy a third sensor and i likely do not have enough bandwidth
Some of the Microsoft VR headsets have got rid of screen door effect entirely, not sure why the big players aren't doing this.
They are, that's why they're switching from OLED Pentile display (lots of SDE) to LCD RGB screens (significantly less SDE)
Barnacules has got to be the single most tech illiterate tech & gaming UA-camr on the entire damn planet when it comes to hardware...
I love how you included time stamps. That is awesome!
How do you set up tracking? Is it easier than WMR/Vive/OG Rift???
Much easier than original Rift and Vive. Even slightly easier than Windows MR []-)
@@VirtualRealityOasis does it scan the environment or will we need to move the headset around the play area?
Will this be your first headset? []-)

I think this is the headset I’m going to buy. I’ve been deciding between the vive and the rift S and I think I’ll be most happy with this one. I own an Oculus Go and I’m already extremely impressed with it and I’d like to stay in the oculus family ;)
I can't do "Refresh",but I can do,"New Fresh" which is the Oculus A Tribe Called Quest!

This is a great video, but it’s making me feel guilty because I just bought a rift.
Don’t worry, you’re still going to be able to play all the new games. Enjoy your Rift []-)
You should feel amazing about that. I wish my headset had less time on it. I don't think they will support my product if it fails a year from now. I don't even think they will have parts for us to buy to replace if something goes wrong....
Not needing the sensors is worth it alone, tbh I don’t see a full version upgrade anytime soon.
Ahhhh I wish I would've thought to ask you to put the headset on, close one eye, then shift it a bit side to side to see how the image looked with your pupil in different spots relative to the lens, emulating IPD differences.. :/
what?
ABSOLUTELY SUPERB VIDEO. I WANT THE RIFT S
Can you add a sensor to track hands behind your back
Edit nvm i saw the answer in the vid lol

@@anonymous134y I VERY strongly disagree. I couldn't wait to get my hands on Go when it got announced primarily because of the lcd screen. I already had Rift and Gear VR but badly wanted Go for movies. I find Go's lack of sde and sharpness way better than Rift display. Forgot to add, the lcd in Rift S is a major force for me to buy it despite having reservations about tracking. Even Mike wants Rift S for the display.

Haha.
