  • We test and review the new Oculus Rift S virtual reality headset, which replaces the original Oculus Rift and Touch controllers. Here's how the new display looks, how well the inside-out tracking system works, and the range of motion for the new controllers. Plus, Jeremy makes a D-I-Y solution to adding quality headphones to the Rift S with a 3D printed mount.

There a a couple WMR headsets that are decent for less but overall package, price, ease of use, controllers - everything considered - it's not even really close. I'm encouraged by this. As a long haul truck driver VR is tough for me to get into. I got the psvr (my only vr experience at this point not counting the virtual boy many, many years ago) but using it on the truck is difficult due to the limited space and standing 8' from the camera being impossible. Original rift and vive were out of the question with their need for multiple cameras or sensors. I'm going to see how small a space this will work in. Also concerned with marking the boundaries. While I have lots of head room and arm room, my floor space is limited due to the seats, cabinets, and bunk behind me. I'm hoping this can be overcome for controller tracking. Cables won't be an issue as I can have my laptop on the top bunk behind me so the wire will hang down from above and never really touch the floor. Here's hoping for a good experience.

    Good review. About the black levels: a lot of these pro reviewers are missing an important part of most dark and space games (like Elite Dangerous). That's that the God rays are terrible in those games. They can get so bad that it really does break the immersion. I'd rather have a grayish black sky than God rays ANY DAY. I'll definitely be upgrading to the S.

      EVOLICIOUS It is an upgrade. The Rift S is far better than the CV1. The specs are better other than the refresh rate. The tracking is better (the old tracking was absolute garbage) and you also get a pass through mode which is very useful. The headset is built a lot better with the new halo strap. Audio and the IPD are the only drawbacks but obviously only if your IPD is out of range and in my case it isn’t. Therefore the headset is an upgrade from the CV1. I mean unless you have tried the headset out for you to say such a bland and unexplained point; “rift s is not an upgrade, lol.” then I wouldn’t say anything.

    • @christophermartin7744

      The ultimate goal of virtual reality is immersion. The S does have a higher level of immersion, period. Less screen door, less God rays and more comfort means a higher level of immersion. In that way, the S is certainly and upgrade that is not offset by the loss of a bit of audio quality.
      What Oculus was going for was evolution, not revolution. It is a small upgrade to immersion but a huge upgrade in usability, affordability and mass market appeal, which is what VR surely needs. Without a bigger market, there will be no advances. The Index appeals to the hardcore enthusiasts, but without a mass market to fund games and software development, that high end HMD will be nothing but a useless brick on your head.

    • @UnknownSquid
      @UnknownSquid 5 років тому +14

      Well, technically all WMR have better resolution displays and run at 90hz rather than 80. The Samsung Oddysy+ in particular has a very significantly superior display, physical IPD adjustment, better audio with quality flip back headphones, and has been on sale for $100 cheaper than the Rift-S. The one most crucial thing that distinguishes the Rift-S from the WMR headsets is simply the extra tracking coverage, making it suitable as a gaming headset. WMR was never aimed at VR gaming, and thus never much needed off screen tracking. It's always been able to play the majority of games well enough, but the narrower frontal tracking coverage was still significant enough a downside to give the gaming market over to the original Rift and Vive despite the extra expense and lower res.
      Had one of the initial WMR brands included the extra cameras from the start, it would have likely made the Rift-S redundant before it was born.

    The Rift S is supposed to replace the Rift, so why does everything feel like a compromise in comparison? Compromised tracking, refresh rate, lens adjustment, audio. This isn't supposed to be the budget option, it's supposed to be their flagship headset.

    • @evolicious
      @evolicious 5 років тому +1

      Rift S is not a replacement. Oculus has stated this many times. It's a refresh, not an upgrade of any kind.
      Facebook is taking on compromises to get to their goal of getting VR in a million homes.
      Also, the Rift S is technically not a Oculus product, it's Lenovo's kit.
      The Rift S also is NOT thier flagship product, nor is it intended to be.
      They are supposedly still working on a next Rift product, but after seeing Brendan Iribe and his team leave in the middle of making that kit becasue facebook wanted to focus on mainstream VR, we don't know if a decent high-end kit will come. If it does, it won't be anytime soon. They have scrapped Bredan's project.

    • @ERWebster
      @ERWebster 5 років тому

      Yea, I'm not sure why they would release two budget builds at the same price point. I understand that inside-out tracking has huge appeal for a lot of people, I can see going that route. But why not make everything else premium? It feels like with just 2 or 3 small differences (great on-board headphones, 90hz OLED panels with IPD adjustment, Yaw adjustment) they would have had a massive winner on their hands.

    • @meowmix705
      @meowmix705 5 років тому

      By Oculus' own numbers, 80% of Rift owners only used 2 sensors. So for a vast major of existing and incoming owners, they'll have that equivalent 3 sensor setup out of the box. And because it won't have USB bandwidth issues, it'll be room-scale without needing that computer techie knowledge to fix the USB errors.
      $400 is still a lot of money, and this is not a budget option. This is the middle mainstream headset backed up with the best VR content.

  • @usafballer79
    @usafballer79 5 років тому +1

    I can see folks passing if they own CV1, but I bought CV1 in Feb, and sold for 600! Rift S wins hands down from a usability perspective. I found the Rift to be uncomfortable, lots of face pressure, and the sweet spot was always sliding around. Granted I have a very narrow IPD and my eyes are deeper set, so I'm a bit worried Rift S won't be great either. But overall, this headset tackles a lot of my desired upgrades after a month of experience with the CV1 Rift. Reduced god-rays, sharper image, wider sweet spot with better lenses, and NO PIA external sensors! Pass-through looks like a huge usability upgrade - one that this review simultaneously praises as a huge feature, but also says isn't worth upgrading over. Passthrough seems like a pretty huge upgrade to me - at least I can tell my wife she'll never know when I can actually see her trying to laugh at me in VR ;-)

      How so; the index is fundamentally still the same tech, still the same lighthouse sensors, still the same hardware with better lenses and a slightly faster refresh rate.
      Just because someone put out some extra specs you consider that being the best on the market? Following that concept, Nintendo that make uber-underpowered devices for decades, should not even be in business.
      The rift without any need for sensors is a win; most can't really tell the difference once you pass 80 Hz (science say so; there are a lot of study made with placebo, that did show people having less nausea when it was told them that the refresh rate was higher), and the only improvement is the display tech; which is iterative. If the Index was the same price as the S, then yes, that would be a better purchase, but if you just started with VR, can't really justify 600 dollars more for the Index, compared to the S.

    • @rubberduck8867
      @rubberduck8867 5 років тому +8

      @@fcf8269 The index has low persistence, significant FOV boosts, eye strain and IPD adjustments, much better inbuilt audio, higher quality planels with higher refresh rates. much better lenses, and so on, in addition to the huge potential in the knuckle controllers. You have completely missed key things about the index. Also if you want to go on price, if you already have a vive and are fine with the wands for now then the index is only costing you 499$. 100$ more for massive fov boost,s ipd and lense distance adjustments, vastle superior audio, lowest persistance scene in an HMD (HUGE DEAL), much better lenses and so on. For 100$ more that makes the S seem entirely pointless (if you are happy with a vive). Personally i'm going from a DELL WMR to an INDEX and I am extremely happy to do so.

    • @UnknownSquid
      @UnknownSquid 5 років тому +3

      @@fcf8269 The lighthouse tracking is _the_ primary reason that Index is the only worthwhile option to me. After having gotten used to enjoying full body tracking, going to an integrated camera based tracking system would feel like being paralysed from the waist down. Integrated tracking is convenient, but also a significant comprise in my opinion. When I see people talking about integrated vs external tracking, to me it's often like hearing someone telling an audiophile that his home's surround sound speaker setup looks intrusive and that earbuds are far more practical. If the home gets in the way of the ideal setup, then the home is the problem, not the setup.
      The refresh rate tests you are talking about are also based upon watching moving images on a conventional static display. That's an entirely different scenario to VR, where your entire perspective is shifting with every head motion in real time, and with the potential for very dramatic motions. The typical tests where someone watches a bouncing ball or looping run animation, cannot remotely represent this use case scenario. The human brain is exceptionally well wired to notice the slightest inconsistency or latency in this regard. You can refer to Norm's own testimony of how startling the difference was.
      Whilst the display upgrade is perfectly fair to call iterative, the field of view boost I would argue is more than that. Going from 110 to 135 is a huge leap when factoring in how it's been accomplished via the innovative dual lens design, keeping the headset compact and without having needed to resort to the "brute force" method that Paimax has had to use with the giant lenses, problematic sweet spot, and obstructively wide hammer head style design. You also can't ignore the controllers.
      And ultimately price to value ratio is relative and personal. I spent a little over 2000 hours in VR over the last year, since purchasing my Vive. Based on the cost of £690 to upgrade to Index (I don't need the new lighthouses), If I get the same time value out of the Index and used it for only one year, it would cost me only £0.34 per hour. If the headsets lifespan is two years, then it costs me £0.17 per hour. There are people that spend three times as much every year on takeaway coffee, and think nothing of it.

    • @fcf8269
      @fcf8269 5 років тому

      @@rubberduck8867 If this is worth the extra money for you, go for it; I hear the same arguments from people buying the latest iPhone or iPad; thinking to get the value for their money; but instead, they are not.
      As is now, if you have just a computer, you get a full VR experience without sensors with the S model, for 399; while for the Index you need more than twice that. You are stuck with sensors, you can't carry your headset where you want, and this for me is worth more of the mumbo jumbo you read on the specs.
      FOV boost is relative; you notice it only until you get used to. Otherwise why people don't buy the 4K HMD at that point? You just need a 2080TI to run it at full throttle. Better FOV, better refresh rate, twice as much resolution...
      It make sense if you already have a vive; for everyone else, it does not; unless they have disposable income or just care about specs.

    No mention of the controller tracking with fps games like onward or pavlov thats my biggest concern, the deadspot in front of the hmd when aiming down sights.

      Yup, Rift S can't do shooters.
      I'm curious as to if oculus will force ESL players to use Rift S at events. If that happens, Onward ESL events are dead.

    Love the 3-D printed mod. I really want to upgrade my Rift, but the tracking is pushing me away, especially when thinking about 360 movements. If those 3-D printed headphone mounts go on sale as a set, I would be more inclined to upgrade.
