  • We talked to a selection of people in northern Nicosia, asking whether they're following the upcoming presidential elections in the Republic of Cyprus.
The Cyprus Mail is the only English-language daily newspaper published in Cyprus. It was established in 1945 and today, with its popular and widely-read website, the Cyprus Mail is among the most trusted news sites in Cyprus. The newspaper is not affiliated with any political parties and has always striven to maintain its independence. Over the past 70-plus years, the Cyprus Mail, with a small dedicated team, has covered momentous events in Cyprus’ modern history, chronicling the last gasps of British colonial rule, Cyprus’ truncated independence, the coup and Turkish invasion, and the decades of negotiations to stitch the divided island back together, plus a myriad of scandals, murders, and human interests stories that capture the island and its -people. Observers describe it as politically conservative.

They're all Cypriots in the the Republic of of Cyprus and they should all be able to vote.

People don't understand the issue with TCs voting for the PRESIDENT of Cyprus .
According to the constitution Greek Cypriots vote for President and Turkish Cypriot for the Vice President. Since 1963, TCs stopped participating in government, and that's why they don't have representation in the Republic of Cyprus.
The leader of Turkish Cypriots is de-facto the "president" of the pseudo-state "TRNC" ( even though voters are not all TCs).
The reason why TCs living in the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus are allowed to vote is because of a European court ruling protecting the right of voting.

So with this logic, the president of TRNC should go together with the republic of Cyprus to decide on the matters of the republic, never read more hypocrite comment than this. You know what Cypriots are really neither Turkish not Greek but Cypriots, how do I know? Only a Cypriot makes such comment on the matter taking the matter from the perspective which looks only for his her benefit but leaves the rest

One of the commentators stated that according to the constitution depending on whether it was the Presidential or Vice Presidential the voting was differentiated accordingly but what would happen if a Greek Cypriot was the spouse of a Turkish Cypriot and vise versa...What does the constitution say about the voting privileges when spouses were from the other community? And their children?

Granted but under the current circumstances that's not pragmatic unless a Turkish Cypriot moves to south...these however are not issues that can not be resolved temporal merely prevalent under the status quo ...I should add that close to 2500 Turkish Cypriots who are employed at various companies and firms in the south all adhere to the social insurance laws ...the income tax and social insurance deductions towards possible lay offs are all accounted for...as such all the other taxable obligations would be fulfilled if and when the islands long term unification is resolved ...only a matter of time I hope...

Well.according to my opinion ,the Key word, about the Cyprus issue is ..respect .
    RESPECT
The main reason ,why the Republic of Cyprus ,enter the EEU is right, exactly for the quarantee and respect of all its citizens human rights
    ALL CYPRIOTS ..
Greeks, Turks, Maronite's ,Armenians, Latin's ..British ..etc .
    Today ,
One out of the six members of Cyprus in the European parliament IS a Turkish Cypriot been elected mainly by the votes of the Greek Cypriots
The Turkish Cypriots, must return back to were they belongs ,and stop expecting that the today's situation will help them .
They are maybe already a minority in the occupyed areas

The Turkish people have also the ID of the Government and ofcourse they can vote if they leaving in the Republic ! they can’t vote in the occupied part of Cyprus , this is logic and I hope is understandable !
We hope this problem to be solved soon ! But the problem is that are not only Turkish Cypriots in the occupied part now ! Is International destination of all Middle East , Asia and Africa ! And many many Turks from Turkey !

The constitution of 1960 is the determinant in all aspects...As one of the commentators stated the voting is differentiated whether its the Presidential of Vice Presidential ...And a confession I certainly need to have a copy of our constitution as so many aspects I am not aware...All in time I hope at least for the sake of our next generations...

I have never heard so much crap in my life.As an expat living in Limassol i get to live and see what's going on in Cyprus and i do have the privilege to have TCS and GCS as friends. Many are now my friends both in the north and the south.I will tell you some facts so many here can understand the problem in Cyprus better.True TCS,not settlers are all for a peace deal.Unfortunately they are all under a strict control by Erdogan's Turkey and that is something they hate along with the army and the settlers. They have absolutely no power anymore due to the control of Turkey on them. The last leadership election in the north was fixed so that Tatar could win.People were given money to vote for him, mostly settler's.Up and until that time Akinci was wining with 48% of the vote. Now many in this video have said that electricity is more important to them than the ROC elections.Well it will not come as surprise then that the ROC has been giving electricity to the north, while they have been fixing the problem. This is now for at least a month and the problem has not been solved. There must be an understanding that Cyprus is still under a ceasefire since 1974,due to the fact that there was an invasion and occupation of 38% of Cyprus by Turkey, later which it settled with Turks. The Turks in the north are more than the TCS now.A country that was meant to guarantee the freedom and integrity of the island, invaded it and occupied it.By settling it also, that constitutes two war crimes. The Cypriot people,i feel, will love to have a settlement where Cyprus becomes one country with one identity and one sovereignty. That will have to come in the form of a BBF,in which there is a TC area and a GC one. That will involve some land given back to the GCS with the TC part falling back to around 26-28%.In a few words, take Turkey out of the equation, you will have a solution to the Cyprus problem in next to no time.

And only a very few did actually any harm to our Turkish Cypriots brothers same as the Turkish Cypriots did to Greek Cypriots and also both sides to their own communities, especially the enforcement of the enclaves by the TMT and political assassinations in both communities.
