Hi guys! Elena here, the journalist who produced this. A little disclaimer: the Cyprus problem is truly complex, so the views expressed here don't have the aim to describe those of an entire community. We know that the experiences of Greek and Turkish Cypriots can differ vastly, so please voice your opinions while remaining respectful of other users' perspectives. Thank you for watching!

Elena, I wish the video mentioned the "Turkish Federated State of Cyprus" that preceded "TRNC." "Turkish" Cypriots had other administrations before "TRNC," but the transition from the federated state to "TRNC" was a critical one--in a very negative way for "Turkish" Cypriots and Cyprus in general.

Dear Elena, congrats on your work. With all due respect, i would not agree, however, that the Cyprus issue is truly complex. On the contrary, it is quite simple and straightforward. What is all about? It's about abolishing the Republic of Cyprus and allowing Turkey's boots to step on Cyprus's soil. This crime was carefully devised BEFORE the establishment of the Republic. That's why in the foundation agreements there were provisions for guarantors and intervention rights. That's why the Turks of Cyprus were upgraded from a minority to a community in the Constitution. That's why the Greeks of Cyprus were downgraded from a majority to a community constitutionslly equal to the minority. That's why Turkey provided armaments and training to the Turks of Cyprus while the Greeks were almost totally unarmed. That's why the Turks of Cyprus turned their guns against the Greeks, provoking them, inducing them to defend themselves, playing the victims of the Greeks. NATO decided to abolish the state and placed Cyprus under the boots of NATO member States. They cheated when they proposed the establishment of a Republic (instead of the demand by the Greeks for Enosis). They cheated because they knew in advance that there were all necessary mechanisms in place that would lead such state to total failure. Such design was, yes, diabolical complex. But triggering the outcome was so simple as could be executed even by a child. Set up the so-called TC community, provide them weapons, impose on them a brutal leadership so no one TC will object (remember those TC who disagree with their leaders), provide intervention rights to Turkey, set the TC to attack the population, see the Turkish hordes landing on Cyprus's ground and the rest can be depicted by the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Look what they have done in the occupied areas since 1974. It's wrong. They do not occupy the areas. They turkify them. It's much worse. They bring settlers. The changed the names of towns. They destroy our cultural heritage. They destroyed our churches, even the graves of our grandfathers. Like a growing cancer. And they are proud of it. That's what they are. That's what the Cyprus issue is about. And they achieved all this with the strong support of the western civilised Christian countries. Look how they reacted against the Russian invasion of Ukraine and how gently the treat Turkey in relation to its invasion of Cyprus. It's disgusting. Isn't it? Disgusting but simple. Not complex at all. Please forgive me. I failed to mention the notorious Acheson Plan and the dictatorship imposed over the people of Greece. "If the Greek Government does not agree, we (USA) will change the Greek Government" they said. And they changed it. 😠

The problem is unfortunately ethnic. A Greek is a Greek a Turkish is a Turkish. I don't believe that there exists a common umbrella identity of being Cypriot even if there used to be, these days it's not palpable.Take the example of Oresti and Sude, they have nothing in common, it's nearly impossible for them to come across each other in social circles. They study in different countries, they speak different mother tongues, they have different values towards life even moral values are different due to the effect of the religion even though Turkish Cypriots are more secular than Greek Cypriots which is evident as the first president of the Republic of Cyprus was Makarios. All in all, only thing that unites them is their zeal to get across to the other side. Orestis thinks of this as a claim of territory, Sude takes this as a claim of identity in the form of acceptance a piece of paper to tell her she is Cypriot real Cypriot to travel abroad, for orestis the land of her Giagia left in the North, a childhood fairy tale

Usually these tests only showcase DNA and genetic make up based only on recent DNA. In fact DNA in Greece also includes Albanian, Bulgarian and Romanian DNA which Greek Cypriots don't have. So Cypriot DNA is a very confused term. In fact Greek Cypriots share a very close genetic proximity with the Aegean Islands and Cretans (the Greek Cretan population is the closest genetic make up apart from Cypriot in my DNA). The fact that Turkish Cypriots have a common pre-Ottoman ancestry with the Greek Cypriots only proves that they are local people who converted, due to many reasons and used to be Greek. However nowadays after many decades and three hundred years they have completely adopted the Turkish culture and thus ethnically they are Turkish. Which of course they are is nothing wrong with it and should be respected along the other cultures of Cyprus.

I have my doubts about the isolation of Cyprus, given that it was frequently conquered by foreigners. Cypriot DNA would simply suggest that there is a separate ethnicity of some such. It's precisely this kind of thinking that allows the linobambaki to advocate for a sanitized Cypriot identity without any Hellenic element. Similarly for Sicily, it's been held by so many different people across history, it would be far fetched to claim its a cluster on its own.

Cyprus was divided and remains divided because the Americans and the British wanted it so to satisfy their political aims on the Eastern Mediterranean and importantly in the Middle East, that's the reason that the maintenance of the SBAs is vital and paid for by the Americans for sure as Britain can no longer afford to keep them .
Reunification is a pipe dream and will not be achieved in my lifetime. The Turkish army occupies a sovereign country, a full member of Europe whilst the European Union stands by idle and at the same time negotiating with the Turks to become a member!.
Europe is a laughing stock around the world, it is high time for countries to go their separate ways, move away from American control and stop regarding Russia as the enemy.

Amazing video, but something to know:
Sude (the girl being interviewed), living in Northern Cyprus, is automatically a Republic of Cyprus citizen. Therefore, she can get a Cyprus passport by default. Sude and any Turkish Cypriots who are BORN in Northern Cyprus and whose parents have roots on the island are automatically Republic of Cyprus citizens. The Republic of Cyprus passport is internationally recognized, and Sude can use it to travel to Europe and the world. The Republic of Cyprus recognizes all Turkish Cypriots as its own citizens.
I think Sude already has the Republic of Cyprus passport, but she does not admit that she has it in this interview.

Hi there, thanks for the comment! While it is true that Cypriots born in the Republic, regardless of being TRNC citizens, have the right to a passport, that's not true for children of mixed marriages, which is Sude's case. One of her parents is Turkish Cypriot, but the other is Turkish, so this doesn't give her the right to the passport of the Republic of Cyprus. The political guarantees Turkish Cypriots would need to accept unification could leave the union politically gridlocked, and Greek Cypriots unhappy for the disproportionate influence. This is why the Annan Plan failed - it gave both sides veto power and equal number of judges, as far as I know.
Also, the presence of Turkish settlers is left open, and it has no solution that pleases everyone.

As such, Turks and other Muslims of the North must flee to another Muslim country which is Turkey. We should bear the brunt of the responsibility and help the refugees as best as we can by offering them new homes. All TC's must be declared persona non grata in Turkey and barred from entry. @@tolefko I don't know your recommendation but I will definitely look for it. However, I strongly recommend referring to A History of Cyprus by Sir George Francis Hill, who was the director and principal librarian of the British Museum from 1931 to 1936. Hill emphasized that, under both Ottoman and later British rule, Turkish Cypriots comprised a significant demographic group in Cyprus, typically representing about 30-40% of the population compared to Greek Cypriots. Given this substantial presence, it is inaccurate to refer to Turkish Cypriots as a minority in Cyprus. Turkish Cypriots maintained a distinct community identity and role, especially under the Ottoman Millet system, which organized communities by religious affiliation and allowed a degree of administrative independence within each group. This system enabled Turkish Cypriots to preserve their cultural and religious identity while coexisting with the Greek Cypriot population on the island.
What I know is that, following the strict Colonial policies of the 1930s, implemented after the “1931 Cyprus Greek Revolt,” and later fueled by Greek Cypriots' aspirations for ENOSIS, a campaign of violence against Turkish Cypriots emerged in the 1950s. The political instability, ethnic cleansing, and violence of the 1960s ultimately led to a significant Turkish Cypriot forced them to immigrate from the island.

I feel like the best resolution to this problem is for the people on the whole island to reunite and see their identity as Cypriots as a whole, stop dividing them by Greeks and turks because by doing that they let these countries have influence over them and divide them. No matter whether they are greek or turk ethnicity after all they are Cypriots in the first place. They do not come from either Greece or Turkey, they come from Cyprus and that whole island is their home. It doesn't matter if their culture traditions and religion are different they are all Cypriots which should be the main factor when creating a country. They should take an example from Bulgaria in Bulgaria there's many bulgarian turks, bulgarian Christians, bulgarian Muslims (pomaks) and Bulgarian roma people and they all consider themselves bulgarian and there has never been separatist movements, and everyone try to live peacefully with each other and respect the others traditions, religion, culture.

A bulgarian example come on, they put Turkish speaking Bulgarian citizens in buses and told them you are going to a journey and exported them to Turketçy by force and then these people after Bulgaria ascended to EU had some rights but with this trauma of the past, they continue to live out of Bulgaria and only go to renew their ids. Not a good and ideal example. The only difference in this story is that the Turkish Cypriots stayed on the North part of the country as it is now but this time the Greek Cypriots steal their ids and don't give citizenship to their children if they are married in north Cyprus to Turkey nationals or third country nationals.

The division of Cyprus was planned BEFORE the establishment of the Republic (that's why the Agreements provided for "intervention rights" and even BEFORE any conflict between GC and TC. Such conflict was deemed to be necessary. So it was induced artificially from the outside. Tell us something about the "surrounding" environment. For example, the Istanbul polgrom against the Greeks and its link with Cyprus. Or about the following efforts of the external players to divide Cyprus, such as the notorious Acheson Plan. History is not a bedside story. If not complete and filled in with the crucial details it becomes a fake story. Unfortunately for the people of Cyprus and especially the GC who are the most tragic victims of the history of Cyprus, not just today but for every other period of time. Most TC are turkified Greeks of Cyprus during the Ottoman rulling. They are not settlers from Turkey or other Ottoman countries. Do your research. There are of course different communities with different wishes for their country, but there’s no other authority (which is the case for Cyprus). We just published a video about Northern Ireland, check it out!

Cyprus is.occupied bu UK,Greece and Turkiye,so after all this 3 removes the hand out of the island, maybe a solution can be achieved, otherwise nothing will change.😢it is not fair to call only north as occupied area, also south is an occupied area.

The inferiority complex of Sude is the true reason to the assimilation of culture and independence in North Cyprus.

Hello, it's Sude here. I just want to make something clear that, i see Cypriots as a one, whole community. But our current living conditions in the occupation regime is not that good, as you might expect. Moreover, i have a problem called 'mixed marriage problem' and it even makes me more disadvantageous among other Cypriots.

You should have talked about the mixed marriage problem. This is also discrimination and assimilation which is result of Greek Cypriots policies against Turkish Cypriots.
