    This boss is one of the reasons I advocate that you play the franchise from the beginning. You're absolutely free to play from whatever order you want but this boss hits on an insanely powerful level if you've been there from the get-go. I feel similarly about Kiryu's "reward" in Gaiden.

    My heart goes out to anyone who was spoiled on this fight’s inclusion before they got to it themselves. I remember how amazing the flashback parts were and if I had known they were coming, it would’ve still been peak but definitely less so.

    • @gokudoni
      @gokudoni  2 дні тому +6

      Agreed. I got spoiled on it due to some stores in the US stocking the game early, which lead to a number of people uploading everything in the most clickbait-y way possible here (and then UA-cam recommendations dealt the finishing blow 😅). Even then, seeing the fight really doesn't compare to experiencing it yourself, thankfully.

    The 3jima trio’s boss them. “Impregnable Triangle” hit so hard, from the song itself sounding straight from an Orchestral performance, to the name itself being an obvious note that Saejima, Daigo, & Majima fighting together are an unbreakable trio

  • @nutsberkintime

    This fight was perfect, almost down to the minute details. The only thing that would've made it better is if Kiryu and whichever -Jima bro switched to their original outfits for the final dragon's resurgence showdowns. Infinite Wealth for all the things I've complained about shines in pure bravado when it comes to setting the stage for its many boss fights. I never thought in my wildest dreams that we'd get a Kiryu vs Majima fight ever again after Yakuza 3, much less one that turned out the way it did. It felt like a long built up boiling point as well as a somber last rumble like no other. It's easy to say that the highlights of a game were callbacks to the older games, but RGG carefully crafted these kinds of fights both in 7 as well as 8 in a way that only a Yakuza game could. Absolutely fantastic.

    • @gokudoni
      @gokudoni  2 дні тому +8

      Wonderfully put! Also, good point on mentioning the lack of original outfits. Luckily, the new designs and the Jima reappearance in the finale mostly make up for that oversight (at least to me hahah)

    In regards to Majima’s doppelgänger move, I have a theory, that I’m sure other people have also rationalised: Majima doesn’t create actual copies of himself, but the copies are just an artistic and gameplay liberty to emphasis Majima’s speed and evasive ability. He is so fast and agile that to his opponents and for the player, we might as well be fighting multiple combatants.

  • @obafrog
    @obafrog 2 дні тому +16

    Definitely agree with you, both on this and the Shishido fight. The first time I saw that Dragon's Resurgence icon in the middle of the screen I was straight up confused, but after I realized what was happening, I just couldn't believe it honestly. Dedicating such a gameplay twist to these guys specifically is the best choice RGG could have made, just to make this fight truly special. It just wouldn't fit anyone else in the game. Do you think this fight could be the final one we get in the Ichiban saga? Finally moving on from the legacy characters and giving the new ones the complete spotlight, at least in terms of boss fights? It would definitely be worthy of being the final one, in my opinion.

    • @gokudoni
      @gokudoni  2 дні тому +9

      Honestly, if it weren't for the Kiryu cancer reveal in Infinite, only a potential Ichiban vs Kiryu fight would fit this "gameplay switch" design choice. It would be great to see the Ichi Saga end of a note as high as this fight was, but that's still years and years away, meaning that RGG could do something even cooler in the meantime, to later offer him a worthwhile send-off

    For pretty much the entire game up until the 3Jimas fight, part of me refused to admit that this was the end of Kiryu's jouney and legacy. The 3Jimas fight was the moment it all fell apart for me.
    Daigo was the first Jima I beat, and the moment I heard For Face and saw the snapshots of Daigo and Kiryu together, I shed some tears. All three brawler moments are a beautiful send-off and celebration of the last 20 years, and while I am excited to see what other adventures Ichiban will be a part of, the fact that Kiryu will likely only show up one more time in the role of a mentor-type character is sad for me. Kiryu deserves the rest, though, and the games aren't going to magically disappear from my library, so I can still relive the moments I hold closest.

    I absolutely love what you said; It could have very easily felt like a "fanservice fight", and it still would have been cool, but thats not how it felt. I think its always standard to write legacy characters who have lots of fans in a "perfect" way where they are always in character and at their best. Instead the writers were confident enough to make Kiryu and 3jima all feel kind of messy and broken broken, and they trusted the fans to be cool with that.

    I would say that if anyone was out of character, that would be Kiryu... But it's not the first time we see him acting like an ass, so... The stupid scene from the pier in Kiwami could still be considered out of character, but at this point I'm not really sure even about that one
    What I find astonishing is that they are still loyal and care about him after all his bullshit. Listen, I'm talking from experience here. The experience of a cancer patient, actually. When you are so sick that you know that probably won't make it though, it's really easy to put yourself on the line and don't give a f**k about the consequences. But expect everyone to follow you as an example of taking responsibility (whatever that crap means in Kiryu's head) is presumptuous. We have been with him through 12 chapters learning how to better treat your friends but I think he won't pass through a practice test about the issue at all.

    • @gokudoni
      @gokudoni  2 дні тому +3

      Valid points! Maybe the fact they've all gone through this cycle of shifting blame so many times meant that they could also accept that none of them have changed that much over the years. Kiryu may be stuck in his ways, but so are the Jimas in many ways, yet they still help each other out in the end. Just the nature of their bonds, I guess. Thank you for contributing to the discussion

      @@gokudoni Yeah. That's a valid point and their loyalty is unquestionable. And despite my harshness I still love the big lug. In their place I would have done the same: scolded/fight him and run to help regardless of his behavior.
      I agree with your video though, it was a great boss fight, just that I was incapable of enjoying it. But maybe it wasn't the one I was craving for. I would sell my soul for having a proper farewell for Kiryu in a game: one with his friends fighting by his side and sharing those bonding links together. With de Daidoji as the final boss and meeting with his children as the final price.
      But RGG won't let me have it. Maybe I'm actually mad with them and not with Kiryu.

    • @Ocean5ix
      @Ocean5ix 2 дні тому

      Honestly, to me Kiryu is the only one that was right in that situation. IMO it has nothing to do with having cancer and acting like there are no consequences, it's about the fact that this room full of ex-Yakuzas are responsible for what's going on and owe it to themselves and what they believed in, to see this through. Again, to me it was the exact opposite of what you got from the scene, it's his friends that didn't treat him better and (almost) failed him... a guy that kept sacrificing himself for their "way of life" and never asked for anything in return. When he finally asks they're like "nah, we're done" lmao
      The most out of character there was Majima, 100%. He would never back away from a chance to fight back and stir up some chaos while doing it. I'm not saying Majima is a shallow character or that he is "unga bunga" and willing to get in a fight at all times, but at the same time he's definitely not the kind of character that will back away from a fight and live in a cabin in the middle of the snow for the rest of his life either.

    • @dominadaemonisociopataenpr6498
      @dominadaemonisociopataenpr6498 2 дні тому

      @@Ocean5ix Well... We agree to disagree then...
      In almost everything actually.
      1st and most important. These three have been taking responsibility from years to this point and paying for their crimes since before Kiryu even finished his tattoo. Even after a dissolution totally built on their efforts they were taking responsibility and providing a new life to former gokudou until one of Kiryu's new allies decided to cancel that to obtain more views for her VTuber channel.
      If they are responsable for all the future actions of any former gokudou, then Tokugawa is responsable for ending the Sengoku wars and and allowing those ronin to form the Yakuza in the first place. Hell, even that barman in Yokohama should be taking responsibility and being recruted for the cause.
      Also, please tell me what favours they need to repay him. I need that list.
      The only favor I remember being asked by any of the 3jimas to him was some money and a change of clothes for Saejima in Y4. The other time that one of them asked just for some advice in Y5 he didn't even acknowledge someone called "son" by himself.
      No. If Kiryu makes any sacrifices at all, those would be for his dead kyodai or for Haruka and the kids.
      And here is where we disagree the most. That isn't taking responsibility or something to admire. That's called running away.
      Leaving those who you love because of some unprocessed feelings of guilt is not responsibility, is the easiest path for an excuse
      And Kiryu was capable of leaving his kids behind because of all types of stupid reasons:
      - Because "only could be one dragon", in Y2
      - Because wanted to help a guy who stabbed him, deliver some documents in Y4
      - Because a nasty lady wanted full control over his daughter's will and future, in Y5
      - Because needed to go to jail for ... the plot? In Y6
      And finally, needed to erase his existence because the Daidoji wanted to buy his silence, with a lot of money but he chose to die because....?????
      Sacrifices himself for "their way of life" ??? Please explain when that happened.
      The reality is that one of them sacrifices his freedom and returns to the clan so Kiryu can leave and live his way of life
      and the other is beaten into the chairman's position by Kiryu, so Kiryu can leave and live his way of life.
      And that without mentioning all the times they have been shot or stabbed for his sake.
      The only point of agreement we could have would be Majima. He is far too intelligent and capable of adaptation to end fishing in that ass of the world, defeated by a v-tuber. But apparently he is more intelligent that the writers too, being those incapable of anything better. Because who needs coherence in a game with gigantic squids?

    • @Ocean5ix
      @Ocean5ix 2 дні тому

      @@dominadaemonisociopataenpr6498 Most plot of Yakuza games, when it comes to Kiryu, could be summed up by that Godfather line "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in". While Majima and Saejima don't owe Kiryu directly, they do owe him indirectly because every time he had to come back and clean the Tojo clan's mess (or dispute between them and the Omi) he literally saved the clan from annihilation or assimilation. I would say Saejima way less, Majima is almost a wildcard, but Dojima 100% owe it to Kiryu.
      This scene could be resolved by Dojima being grateful and accepting to help Kiryu, that would sway the other two. Majima acting like himself and helping Kiryu, that would also sway the other two. As for Saejima, he would just go with the majority or even just Majima.
      I think we perceive the entire franchise in a completely different (almost opposite) way. You seem to see as the sacrifices of the many in the name of one. I see it as the sacrifices of one in the name of the many. And while I'm not here to debate who's right or wrong (we're just having a friendly back and forth) I would say that the fact that Kiryu's legendary, almost divine reputation, is more in line with the way I see the franchise. He is constantly the 1 vs 100. He's constantly the last line of defense of the Tojo Clan. Everybody look up to him, that's a huge point in 99% of his Bucket List storyline. What is also part of Infinite Wealth's storyline is Kiryu learning to ask for help and not go through this alone. And the fact that in this game, with this specific message, his friends refuse to help him when he asks, speaks for itself. To me the game is clearly paiting them as the... stubborn ones that lost their way and who they always were.

    Some stuff I think you missed:
    The turn based format works to the fight's benefit, as this is one of the few battles where it feels like the enemies are their own party. They have follow up attacks just like us, Daigo buffs the entire team (Which adds to the "leader" vibe) and they each cover each other's elemental weaknesses. In general, they sinergize like a group of their caliber would.
    Secondly, I wanna point out the genius of the midfight QTE. It shows us Kiryu couldn't have done this alone. As much as we joke about him "breaking the turn based format", age is catching up to him. Disease is catching up to him. He needs his friends to back him up. Even the choice of who goes up against who is genius. Zhao can match Majima's blade and agility, Seonhee is the only one who could've stopped Saejima's attack, and the comparatively weaker members of each squad are matched up against each other. It really makes me wish we got more of these multi-character intros or QTEs.
    Lastly, just as a maybe unintended easter egg, the track that plays is in 3/4. Perfect for a trio that's missing their last one to become the four, right?

      Excellent points! As for the time signature in particular, I decided to remove that part from the initial video script, so that I can do a proper analysis of the song in a standalone video. I'd say it was a very deliberate choice by the composer

      @Cloud_9_reveiws the game doesn't look like a goodbye to Kiryu for me. SEGA already did saying "goodbye" to Kiryu with 3, 5 and 6, and 8 might follow the same pattern. We'll see on the next game.

    My biggest complaint with IW is that the level scaling is too extreme on both ends I think,
    Being 2 or 3 levels above someone shouldn't be a death sentence for either party, yet thats exactly what it is, it makes overleveling for most people happen by accident, and completely dismantling the challenge that's supposed to be there.
    I personally made sure to always try and match the requirements to the number, but if you're underleveled by 2 or 3, its pretty much night and day, and a I think a worse case scenario is when you're like 4 levels above your bosses, I feel like they should do something about that in Lad 9, maybe add *real* difficulty options?

The build up to the fight is still very cool but I just wish the boss itself was harder

    3jima beats 2jima imo for gameplay and narrative connection. 7 and Gaiden have some of the best narrative and gameplay connection fights of the series. I suppose 0's final boss does as well but idk. The rest? Not so much, more standard final challenge/test of the game's mechanics.

    I can understand Daigo being pissed at Kiryu refusing to offer him support, then constantly showing up to smack him down for the decisions he's forced to make in Kiryu's absence.
    - Y2 Kiryu beats up Daigo to convince him he has a responsibility to the Tojo clan... because of who his father was?
    - Y3 Kiryu is retired and claims to no longer have a responsibility to the Tojo clan, Daigo attempts to respect this. Kiryu guts the senior leadership of the clan (and the one financing the clan) whilst Daigo is in a coma. Most of them were traitors though, but the clan is now weak and lacking funds.
    - Y4 Kiryu is retired and claims to no longer have a responsibility to the Tojo clan. Diago seeks a backdoor deal to finance the Tojo he's been left with, given the absence of Mine bankrolling him. Kiryu doesnt suggest any alternatives but is happy to beat down Daigo for the path he's chosen. Kiryu then apologises and says he's learned he does have a responsibility and will support Daigo more in the future.
    - Y5 Kiryu is retired, he pretends he doesnt know who Daigo is when he comes asking Kiryu for advice.
    - Y6 Kiryu apologies again and says he's learned he does have a responsibility and wishes he'd been able to support Daigo more directly (he learns the same thing he learned at the end of Y4... again), but unfortunately he's 100% dead and therefore cant help in the future.
    - Y7/Gaiden oh look Kiryu's been alive this whole time and still hasnt supported Daigo, despite claiming he regretted not supporting Daigo in his "dying letter".
    - Y8 "how dare you shirk your responsibility Daigo!"

    Disagree on the turn based thing the lost judgement mod legends gauntlet adds a real time version of this fight which genuinely peak its obviously a little jank its a mod but its exactly what it should be it works in real time I feel your thoughts on that come from maybe not playing that mod or not like expecting enough but really had it been official would touch the heights of shishido it only doesn't coz they arnt playable teammates they robbed us...

      The mod does look amazing, but it stills suffers from the issues pointed out in the video. You either have two of the three Jimas standing by the side doing nothing, or alternatively, have all of them combo you at once. The problem isn't the idea of fighting all of them in a beat-em-up style, it's the messier balancing, compared to the turn-based version.

  • @masteroflight7296

    the ONLY issue is that the game is so extremely easy and you can very easily get super over leveled for this boss without even trying causing the fight to having much less impact because you beat them so easily

  • @Ocean5ix
    @Ocean5ix 2 дні тому +3

    IMO RGG has toned down a lot when it comes to mid fight cutscenes and hype moments since Y0 and while this fight was great the reason behind it was kinda lame and very fan service-y.
    I thought it was fun in a game-y way but it definitely didn’t hit that emotional note that Yakuza main story moments do. It felt a bit immersion breaking because the fight didn’t serve any purpose to the story itself, just to the player. Like “this fight is happening because we know you want it.. so have at it!”.
    PS: I also feel like there’s a weird tone with this fight. We all know Yakuza gets crazy but there’s just something weird about them beating up an old man with cancer and a bunch of civilians just for the sake of it. I don’t know… this entire fight just felt off to me.

    • @Norrabal
      @Norrabal 2 дні тому +2

      I see no issue with the reasoning,
      Besides, the fight can both have story purpose and be fan service-y,
      Also reducing kiryu to just an "Old man with cancer" and Ichiban's pals as "Just civilians" is a very reductive, especially since 1 of them literally isn't a civilian.

    • @Ocean5ix
      @Ocean5ix 2 дні тому +1

      @@Norrabal It's not really about reducing the characters in terms of "power creep", we all know Kiryu is up there in "power level", what I mean is that his party spent most of the game protecting him from having to fight and the man himself appears gassed after a few brawls in multiple cutscenes throughout the game. It's more about the morality of beating up a man with cancer (that needs to stay fresh for the real meaningful fights) than how strong Kiryu is.
      And you're right, Seonhee and maybe Zhao far from being just civilians, but still.. Namba and Adachi are. Ichiban isn't part of Kiryu's party.
      "Besides, the fight can both have story purpose and be fan service-y,"
      I agree, but this fight wasn't one. All these characters matured throughout the games, they can sit down and have a serious conversation. The fact that they beat the hell out of each other for "ol' times sake" was just fan service. And I admitt my "inner, younger self" had a blast with the fight itself, but my 31yo ass thought it kinda ruined a very serious and emotional moment of the story... just a tiny bit.
