Happy 2025! Glad I’ve finally gotten a video out on this topic since it’s one I’ve always loved. This video was voted for by supporters on Patreon! I’ve also got two other videos almost finished, so expect those soon!
Unrelated to the video, but I've been wondering, why is your profile picture of the poster for 2013's Oldboy? What drew you to use that image specifically?
Great timing on this one. I played and finished inFAMOUS for the first time this-- er, _last_ year (Happy New Year's, everyone), as part of my endeavour to play games I have absolutely zero interest in whatsoever in order to broaden my horizons. It was a slog at first, and I had to force myself to get through a lot of it, but by the end I appreciated the game much more and am even considering playing the sequel eventually. And yes, I did watch your Kessler video immediately after the credits rolled, just to scrape as much content out of this channel as possible (as long as it doesn't involve me having to watch the Saw films).
On the topic of Mercer's change of character, they pulled the same thing as Infamous in that there was a DC comic tie-in that is basically summed up as The Blacklight Virus/Alex went around the world basically soul searching, but eventually grew to develop a God Complex a la Vergil from the DMC reboot and decided humanity needed saving from itself hence his sudden turn to villainry.
@@chrisossu2070 Not exactly. He was betrayed yes, but mainly by two individuals in different ways. A Mill Owner who was previously a mob enforcer (which Mercer only got angry at after killing the mob boss & read his memories, to find that the man had brutally killed people) and his daughter (who did directly betray "Jack" by shooting him & stealing money that he brought with him) who wanted to follow in her father's criminal footsteps before a rageful Mercer killed her. They never even knew who or what he really was right before he killed them.

I honestly think [PROTOTYPE2] is a lot better than people give credit for. Yes, the story leaves a lot of loose threads from the first game hanging, but the actual game is a huge improvement over the first one and addresses some of the criticisms you brought up. More streamlined controls and mechanics, sidemissions that tie into the story, powers being unlocked by completing missions and side content making you feel like you're getting stronger, and some of the funniest dialogue I've heard in an open world sandbox game. You just gotta love Starnes the Blackwatch grunt! Anyway, Happy New Year HyberBitHero! P.S. What a coincidence that GmanLives looked at the [PROTOTYPE] series and now here you are.
I remember getting Prototype 2 specifically to see if they went anywhere with Pariah… I was heavily disappointed but hopeful they’d capitalize on a sequel. Oh well
Holy, new HBH video on January 1st? We ball? Edit: it’s a serious shame that none of the Infamous games have ever been ported to PC or even modern consoles. It’s the only series I have ever fully platinumed. Not even DMC but that’s more because I suck ass at them. I’d kill for a remaster of the series though, or even basic ass ports to PC.
Been subscribed to your channel for about 12 years since the DmC video and you got me into Yakuza before it was cool. Glad you are making videos a bit more often again.
I remember seeing a video from E3 before Prototype came out with one of the developers talking up the game. I remember he mentioned something about co-op that inevitably got cut. He was talking up how one player can fly a helicopter while the other would hang out on the wing pulling missiles off and chucking then at enemies and I've wanted this in a game ever since.
0:50 To be fair, having a mission where the player uses lightning to destroy a water tower was definitely not a first for Sucker Punch at this point. Ignoring the fact that it was TECHNICALLY a giant attack robot DISGUISED as a water tower--
I can't believe this was recommended to me just in time. I'm currently making a manga series that I'll be submitting to Shonen Jump this year and the infamous series is a heavy inspiration for my manga. It's the perfect example of building on an already existing concept, rather than lame half-brained originality. Infamous series ripped off Static Shock, but that's a GOOD thing because infamous ended up being the best interpretation of electric powers, far better than static shock in my opinion. Infamous is PEAK electric powers in video games in my opinion, particularly the 2nd game. My manga will rip off many series but I will prove that originality isn't as important as people think. Everything has already been done. it's better to combine and build on already existing concepts. Thank you for this video, it helped when drawing my manga, having this in the background.
It's more that while your abilities are entertaining in a sandbox, the mission design is often frustrating and often feels at odds with the freedom your powers should be giving you.
@chrisossu2070 That's exactly how I feel. You have all these techniques and abilities but it doesn't feel like the game itself was properly designed around them.
It's weird how back when these games came out I thought they were both cool and enjoyable but nothing too special. Fast forward to today and they both feel so novel and unique.
Gameplay-wise both are power fantasy fulfillment, one as a wizard, another as a brawler. I think the brawler moveset in Prototype is far more complete and satisfying than what inFamous offers for its electrical zapping. Which in turn gets divided in two by one of those classic Fable-like binary morality systems. Mobility is a major positive for both games, but Prototype presenting a bigger, sprawling, taller playground takes rampaging and traversing through it an order of magnitude higher in terms of grandiosity. This is all of course a fair and balanced love letter to Prototype from someone who hasn't even played inFamous.
With Radical being canned by Activision and most of the fans for Prototype never truly feeling this game has hit it's heights, there's more fan content for a hypothetical Prototype 3 than for an InFamous 3, at least that I've seen. I can recommend Purposeless Rabbitholes video on the subject or Whitelight's if you really wanted a sketch on what a finale to the series could look like. If any commenters can point me towards a good InFamous 3 concept, please do!
Looking at both games side-by-side really reminds me of Spiderman: Web of Shadows where it's almost a perfect combination of both. You have your characters and morality choices with a good or bad ending in a ravagely infected New York. Any game where you can just run and fly in the air all over New York was awesome, god, I would kill for a 3rd Hulk game.
Yeah, I love muscle mass for that in _addition_ to the increased melee damage it normally gives. I know it may not be as much damage as the _blade_ for example, but you're arguably more versatile with muscle mass and less likely to stop and switch powers as often.
Infamous is a great series but personally I like the grotesque body horror of Prototype more. Alex's powers being rooted closer in real world bioengineering adds to the feeling of being this unholy freak of nature compared to Cole's electricity powers and his more "superhero origin story" type of feel for his games.
Mfs be like "Alex can beat him" meanwhile alex and heller can consume material that isn't just flesh so technically they could cover themselves in rubber
When it comes to your thoughts on Elizabeth Greene, she doesn't have any presence in the game because she's not meant to be a character, she's clearly written to be a force of nature, an agent of choas, an avatar for the virus; she refers to herself as Alex's "mother" in the sense that her virus begat his virus. Whoever the true Elizabeth was, she died along with everyone else at Hope, Idaho.
Alien mindset characters can still be characters and interesting. The fact she's clearly capable of thought and decision making and can communicate like that automatically means they could have made her more engaging as a villain. What she is is not an excuse for her being such a boring villain that has literally nothing to her. Hell, the protagonist is literally the same thing she is, as is the hunter that straight up manipulates "Alex" and clearly has defined regular ass motivations and makes choices. She is a character, she's just a boring nothing one. Her just doing shit for no reason except to be generic antagonist lady is just because they couldn't come up with anything, not due to her being an 'agent of chaos' being itself interesting in any way. She's just a badly written character and villain, like basically everyone else in the game.
@Amodelsino Greene doesn't have a character. A character has to have their own personality and goals; she--or rather, IT--is an avatar of the redlight virus. Alex is different; the blacklight virus merged with with Alex, it BECAME him.
@@SuperboyLilly In Alex's, or rather Blacklight's case, the difference between it and Elizabeth Greene was that the virus assimilated the dying Alex Mercer's brain, and then, because of this act, it obtained a conscience and sapience, in a way, the Blacklight that we accompany throught the whole game is more like a child being suddenly born and thrusted into the mess that the original Alex made.
@@SuperboyLilly she isn't an avatar for the red light virus, she was the red light virus itself. The prima guide confirmed that red light was responsible for the creation of all life in the prototype series. Which makes her statement to Alex in their second meet make much more sense. When she said she was the reason for everything, she literally meant EVERYTHING.
@@xxprototypexx5056 The redlight virus starting life on earth can be taken with a grain of salt; I found a copy of the prima, and there are several inconsistencies. Are you sure this isn't just some concept book to explain the developers' thought process? Because there were concept designs for characters that were scrapped.

I love this video. Prototype is a very sandbox heavy game, while Infamous is a great action adventure game. They have their different strengths. So it really did all come down to who had the better Saber cosplay! Love me some Fate stay/night!
Heey glad to see you're still doing stuff. I remember your Kessler Devious Intent from way back when. Cheer man! Also I had no idea Yahtzee did that. The madman
As much as I respect Infamous' better city and characters---I knew about Prototype first. It's also more exhilarating _and_ appeals to me more as a concept. Also, _you can still play Prototype._
I'm six minutes into the video and I predict what I feel right now correlates with a lot of people here. These types of games is something we lost in follow up console generations. It's a sweet spot between the gameplay-driven PS1 & PS2 era and the very story-driven, high production value games we have now. Watching that, I kind of missed that time and vibe. We're all nostalgic right now when it comes to games and movies and this shows why.
Pro: Cole is a guest character in street fighter x tekken. Con: Cole is a guest character in sfxt, and was only in the Playstation version of the game to boot.
I personally preferred Prototype because when these games came out I was doing parkour in real life and it just felt so much clunkier than real life in Infamous. The movement being so much more satisfying as a person who was living and breathing movement in real life was THE deciding factor. This honestly led me to be Prototype 2's only hype man. I was super pissed at what they did to Alex, but I could not deny how much fun the game was to play.
The claws can deploy a massive spike trap underneath enemies which dispatches crowds or tanks very quickly. The shield is better for charging thru crowds or vehicles rather than the exo which basically only protects you from fire but still has a "charge" buff.
Both of these games are so good I still don’t know which one I like more. I love comics so I got super attached to Infamous but I also love anything featuring edgy bio punk and Prototype had that in the bag. Both are just so good and gives their core audience exactly what they want.
I forgot how much you really liked Seiba until the end of the video, haha. Well done video, this was a lot of fun to watch. Your analysis is always insightful and I'm curious to hear your thoughts on Infamous 2 in a future video.
The choice about the doctors or the girlfriend being rigged was BS, but I imagine plenty of folks have argued that Kessler would always know the outcome because of what he would do. I can see both sides of the argument.
The fact that Sony has done nothing with the Infamous Ip in 10 years is a genuine crime. Second son was one of the most popular launch titles for PS4 and the game Still holds up to this day, even graphically!
I chose to save Trish in my good playthrough instead of tge doctors - and that stung WAY more when she is fatally wounded and praises you for your heroism and you know you just didn't live up to that It reaffirms the decision to become more heroic - to truly live up to this version of yourself that in the end Trish saw you as Loved that first game so much (great vid btw)
I'm assuming I was recommended this because I started playing Prototype again (PS4 version, platinumed the PS3 one in 2014-ish). I've been wanting to play Infamous again, too, but I really want a 60 FPS update to do so.
I like both games, but I felt infamous had a better campaign but prototype had a better sandbox. I used to Rp as a soldier and do my best to fight the zombie horde with the soldiers. My favourite thing about prototype though was a fight I had on the side of a building against 3 hunters. Killed all 3 without touching the ground, real superhero type shit
HBH vid? On my birthday? Happy New Year indeed. Also; I remember some people not particularity liking the main character of Prototype. Makes me wonder if they decided to have him be the villain of the sequel, as a response to player feedback. Dunno if that would have happened in the 7th gen though, but it would be funny.
4:22 if you think about it. The Prototype 1 map is a good timestamp of what New York looked like at the time. Year 2006, I don't think there is any other video game with a New York of that time period. Maybe GTA 4 can rival it for atmosphere of a even more realistic/satire form of New York. I'm Rambling
I remember getting InFamous when Sony were giving away free games as compensation to make up for the first of many hacking incidents. I probably wouldn't have picked it up if not for that mess, so something good did come out of the ordeal after all.
40:08 about that. both infamous and prototype actually have comics that takes place after their first games and before their second. i won't spoil anything as i do implore you to read it yourself before your second part of the video
the worst morality choice in inFamous is in 2 where you have to choose either Kuo or Nix's powers, if you wanted Nix's powers as a good guy then the game decides you're suddenly hitler and reverses your karma.
Hey man Im with you as someone that doesnt need or really want to get high scores in challenges in games but i must say in Prototype its actually worth trying to platinum these challenges and thats where a lot of fun can be found in this game. The reason being is: since you are such a powerhouse in the story and the only challenge really comes from how many enemies can they throw at you, the challenges in this game restrict you to certain powers and objectives and you have to really master your entire skillset and think creatively to succeed in them. I highly recommend giving it a try!
HBH returning to cover my favorite PlayStation franchise and its rivalry with another series I love? I thought I had 28 more days to go until my birthday!
I agree with your comments on Infamous 2 not being the best follow-up to what the first game set up. I hated that Moya, Alden and Sasha were completely gone in 2. An Infamous 1 remaster that includes a playable epilogue that goes over the events of the comics would be appreciated. I know that Moya and Alden were killed in the comics, but Sasha's ultimate fate is still unknown. I want to know more about her.
I'd argue that Prototype had at least one strong side quest and that's the Military Consume Events. If you're not actively hunting for the Web of Intrigue targets in the open world, they allow you to fill out the Web. And they even lead to a conclusion for a minor but plot significant character.
'You just buy powers from a menu', that goes for both games. Prototype, you get claws as a story progression, same with the blade, armor and infected vision. Shame this is biased cause the video started strong.
Both games are amazing for different reasons. If I had to choose one to bring back for a modern sequel, it would be Prototype. We don't really see these 'mass carnage' type games any more.
Imo Infamous has the better story, concept, world, and powers and scaling. PT is fine and still, a phenomenal game, but edgier and more for those that enjoy physical emposing game play. Btw. Great video man. Any where to get the thumb nail art to save as a screen saver????
Ok hold on, better story and graphics i agree, but infamous isn't better in world, powers scaling or concept. Prototypes concept was about an ever evolving virus mutating to the point literally nothing could kill it. It's basically doomsday from DC, that beats basically every power regardless how flashy or godlike it looks. The world in infamous was cool, but not as cool as prototypes where the environment would completely change based on story progression. Powers were far better too, infamous gameplay focused mainly in 3rd person shooting and traversal while prototype handled that plus stealth and infiltration.
Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation fame jokingly/hypothetically ended one of his videos by openly challenging the creators of Infamous and Prototype to illustrate their opposing game’s protagonist dressed effeminately with rainbows and/or unicorns and **LITERALLY YOU BRING THIS UP IN THE VIDEO AT THIS EXACT POINT WAS WRITING, typed rainbows and unicorns the exact same time you said it**
I'd love to see your detailed thoughts on Prototype 2 in the future! I thought the quality of life features, progression, and side content were superior in Prototype 2 but I agree with your take that the route they took with the story left a lot to be desired. I hope they reboot this franchise some day and I hope Microsoft pushes Activision to return to their non-Call of Duty IPs (True Crime, Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero) in the future.
the fact that we still didn't get Prototype 3 to this day is pretty sad, even Infamous got a 3rd game, with the technology we have today the possibilities for new gameplay mechanics are endless, i remember being so "starstruck" about the freedom of gameplay in these games back when i was a kid, just amazing btw i wish HyperBitHero would make another Yakuza video, he's one of the OG Yakuza enjoyers and i'd much appreciate his updated take on the franchise now that it went more or less mainstream in the gaming world
Both Infamous and Prototype should be respected regardless of opinion. Though I always had this mind set for some reason and I don't know why. Infamous Playstation Exclusive and Prototype Xbox Exclusive. And before Playstation players dog on me this is because Microsoft now own the studio and company that made Prototype meaning they own the rights. Plus I think its unfair that certain games should only be on playstation so this is my way of making it fair

Awesome, man. Keep up!
I started using it ironically during my time as an American living in South Korea for a few years because it's funny.
@@HyperBitHero OldAmericanBoy - The Animation 💀
The sequels are much better, definitely keep going
On the topic of Mercer's change of character, they pulled the same thing as Infamous in that there was a DC comic tie-in that is basically summed up as The Blacklight Virus/Alex went around the world basically soul searching, but eventually grew to develop a God Complex a la Vergil from the DMC reboot and decided humanity needed saving from itself hence his sudden turn to villainry.
Also because, while trying to live a civilian life, he was betrayed by several people he trusted after they discovered who he was.
And this is why tie in comics and novels are cancer on the industry that needs to be burned out.
@@TheArklyte why????
the tie in comics were perfectly fine, it gave the fanbase an answer to why mercer became evil, does it entirely make sense.......no.
but nor does the guy who says hes confused and acting timid saying "SHE'LL BE THE MOTHER OF THE NEW WORLD!"
@@dr.levionce5516 The second game was a total wash. The first game has way more attention to detail and as a concept is far cooler. The uniforms of enemies, their gear, etc, all of it ties in far better. The second one was just lame.
My favourite channel back with another episode. Good start of a New Year. Have a happy and healthy one Hero!
Oh well
@@Nutterbutter123 There will never be a sequel to prototype sadly.

I heard rumors that there was a prototype/infamous crossover planned at some point, but it was cancelled, before anything was actually made.
0:50
To be fair, having a mission where the player uses lightning to destroy a water tower was definitely not a first for Sucker Punch at this point.
The speed and the amount of havoc you could wreck in Prototype is still something I remember fondly. Still don't know why it was received so poorly
It's more that while your abilities are entertaining in a sandbox, the mission design is often frustrating and often feels at odds with the freedom your powers should be giving you.
Adding onto the above, both Prototype games are also a technical catastrophe on some PC hardware.
@Pan_Z that was a problem with 90% of PC ports back then
@chrisossu2070 That's exactly how I feel.
The gameplay in Prototype is just way better than inFamous. Story be damned, I want to be a near invincible killing machine.
AMEN
Looking at both games side-by-side really reminds me of Spiderman: Web of Shadows where it's almost a perfect combination of both. You have your characters and morality choices with a good or bad ending in a ravagely infected New York. Any game where you can just run and fly in the air all over New York was awesome, god, I would kill for a 3rd Hulk game.
7:49 ironically Muscle mass is one of the best powers to use because it turns cars into missiles. It does so much damage.
@@TheRealDurge omfg, I can't believe I never even thought of that
Love the video, now I'll wait for Infamous 2 vs Prototype 2.
Are there plans to compare Infamous 2 and Prototype 2?
This is such a blast from the past. I remember finding your channel through your original review of Infamous you submitted to the SWAGshow.
Its nice to see you revisiting your roots.
It’s unbelievable being reminded that they made a big budget “AAA” game that unabashedly nasty and not in a optional sandbox fun kinda way, it makes evil options in other games look like a joke and it’s not hiding behind satire like other option world world games do either
Alex will kick his ass, no debate needed.
brother COOKED, 15 YEARS in the making, instant sub HAPPY NEW YEAR. Please INCLUDE the infamous vs prototype fan art if you ever make an Alex vs Cole video, PEOPLE LOVE to draw them💖💖
I love this video.
Welcome back bit!
Shoutout DEATH BATTLE for giving these two franchises more attention than their own companies did in years
@@nathaniellee5277 even if they were flatout wrong.
Pro: Cole is a guest character in street fighter x tekken.
Con: Cole is a guest character in sfxt, and was only in the Playstation version of the game to boot.
Muscle mass was great because it buffed the damage of throwing to a ridiculous degree, meaning even thrown people could obliterate tanks or hunter
Great essay as always dude, been a fan since the Gravity Rush vids, tried out tons of stuff because of your recommendations. Keep up the good work!
Stan Lee’s approval of Cole McGrath may have pushed me in the direction of Infamous. But I definitely never hated Prototype. Both games are great.
GManLives and you dropping prototype vids in the same week. It’s a late Christmas.
I chose to save Trish in my good playthrough instead of tge doctors - and that stung WAY more when she is fatally wounded and praises you for your heroism and you know you just didn't live up to that
It reaffirms the decision to become more heroic - to truly live up to this version of yourself that in the end Trish saw you as
Loved that first game so much (great vid btw)
I never played Prototype, it seems awesome
I'm assuming I was recommended this because I started playing Prototype again (PS4 version, platinumed the PS3 one in 2014-ish). I've been wanting to play Infamous again, too, but I really want a 60 FPS update to do so.
I was just checking out your videos for New Years and was pleasantly surprised to wake up to this being uploaded.
10/10 video. Not because of the review/comparison, because of the Fate/Stay Night reference.
The review was cool too though.
Loving seeing these games get more love and attention again.
I love just moving around in infamous, but there's little that gives me more joy than elbow dropping a tank with the hammer fist in prototype
It is a genuine CRIME that inFAMOUS hasn’t got a remaster and no Prototype 3.
Thinking about a modern mix of prototype and Carrion.
Welcome back buddy, good to see you uploading again!
I've just now realised you sound exactly like Kitboga. What's up with that
the worst morality choice in inFamous is in 2 where you have to choose either Kuo or Nix's powers, if you wanted Nix's powers as a good guy then the game decides you're suddenly hitler and reverses your karma.
I highly recommend giving it a try!
that ending just makes me want to see an FS/N video from Hero
HBH returning to cover my favorite PlayStation franchise and its rivalry with another series I love? I thought I had 28 more days to go until my birthday!
What a coincidence, I just rewatched your video on Kesler the other day hehe. Oh and happy 2025.
I miss these two gems.
I love Prototype because it just feels like someone wanted to make a mass combat sandbox game where they could make and do whatever they wanted 😂
16 years later idk why you titled it 15 years later if you released this video the first day of 2025
Both games are amazing for different reasons. If I had to choose one to bring back for a modern sequel, it would be Prototype. We don't really see these 'mass carnage' type games any more.
I was so shocked by Alex's actions in P2, thought for sure he would stay some sort of anti hero or whatever but conflict is needed.
Imo Infamous has the better story, concept, world, and powers and scaling.
PT is fine and still, a phenomenal game, but edgier and more for those that enjoy physical emposing game play.
Btw. Great video man. Any where to get the thumb nail art to save as a screen saver????
I posted it on twitter along with the initial video post!
I will always remember the Infamous/Prototype fandom crossover in 2009. The fanart, the fanfiction, the fan theories. Those were the memories.
I would really like to see Prototype and Infamous get a new game even if it’s just a remaster
Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation fame jokingly/hypothetically ended one of his videos by openly challenging the creators of Infamous and Prototype to illustrate their opposing game’s protagonist dressed effeminately with rainbows and/or unicorns and **LITERALLY YOU BRING THIS UP IN THE VIDEO AT THIS EXACT POINT WAS WRITING, typed rainbows and unicorns the exact same time you said it**
A fine way to start 2025. Happy new year, Bit!
Infamous and Saints Row 2 were the peak of gaming to me as a child
Love both of them.
Prototype is the best thing ever man. The way you could front flip over a truck and pick it up is just. *chefs kiss*
I'd love to see your detailed thoughts on Prototype 2 in the future! I thought the quality of life features, progression, and side content were superior in Prototype 2 but I agree with your take that the route they took with the story left a lot to be desired. I hope they reboot this franchise some day and I hope Microsoft pushes Activision to return to their non-Call of Duty IPs (True Crime, Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero) in the future.
the fact that we still didn't get Prototype 3 to this day is pretty sad, even Infamous got a 3rd game, with the technology we have today the possibilities for new gameplay mechanics are endless, i remember being so "starstruck" about the freedom of gameplay in these games back when i was a kid, just amazing
btw i wish HyperBitHero would make another Yakuza video, he's one of the OG Yakuza enjoyers and i'd much appreciate his updated take on the franchise now that it went more or less mainstream in the gaming world
Both Infamous and Prototype should be respected regardless of opinion.
InFamous was my first PS3 game. I needed to try prototype after that.
