hi abe, sorry if I'm asking after an year that u ve don this video, but don't u think is easier to use the Uv editing mode in maya instead staying in the General one?

just a matter of preference, i have been doing it this way for the past 10 years so it is difficult to change my ways haha, but whatever works for you is fine

mm no not sure, there is a spherical uv mapping option, and there is also light baking that can be done in a secondary uv map but im not sure what you mean by globe map
