I don't think it's so much that Gene "forgot" the words, I think it's that he isn't used to singing and playing it at the same time. If you listen to the song there is a walking bass line that comes right in the verses that probably messed him up. Obviously Gene can sing/play at the same time, but he has probably never even thought about singing this one before so while playing that bass line adding lyrics to it probably threw off what he has been used to doing for 20+ years. I have been playing/singing for years and it's crazy how sometimes playing a different part to a song you have been singing for years can really mess you up.
Couldn't agree more. .. truthfully that sounded pretty good.. Gene's voice has amazingly held up better than Paul's. . I always thought Paul had the better voice, but after 40 plus years, Paul's voice is shredded... he definitely has something wrong.. its not just age, his vocal cords are just ripped up
He should probably sing all of Paul's songs at this point. That said, Paul has complained that Gene doesn't know the words to his songs even though he knows the words to all of Gene's songs.
I'm sure Ace and Peter had a good laugh backstage at this. I feel sorry for the poor sap that lost his job over this mishap. I don't know which was funnier. Paul stuck up there like a sack of potatoes or Gene mangling the lyrics. Funny stuff.
This is very cool actually. I like when things sometimes dont go as expected, it makes the concert unique. Nowadays, Kiss is so "rigid" that if you watch one concert, you watched all concerts of the tour
The band handle this situation exceptionally well, especially Gene & Paul. These guys are professionals, they didn't seem to lose sight of what was first and foremost, in terms of importance, THE FANS!! That audience was rooting for them during the entire mishap moment, and KISS remained true to the audience via a spirit of "The Show Must Go On!!"
Gene has what it takes to get the job done. After all, circumstances sometimes arise during live performances that require the need to take care of business. This is validity as to the reason of a successful rock band being able to make sure that the show must go on. Gene Simmons comes from a place of strength and can provide a solid foundation and structure within the arena of business within show business. Cheers Gene!
I thought Gene sounded great doing Love gun. He brought out some techniques I never knew he had and while still sounding true to the song, he made it his own there for a couple minutes.
He may have forgotten the lyrics, but I actually liked Gene's vocals on it. Kinda makes me wish he hadn't forgotten the lyrics and Paul stayed on "The Transporter" for the whole song.
Don't know if anyone else has commented this as well. This show was March 18th, 2000 at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim CA, USA as part of the "Farewell" Tour. Not only did Paul's zipline fail, but Gene's flying harness also malfunctioned during the set forcing Paul to take over vocals on God of Thunder! It was an interesting night for sure, but one that I was happy I was at.
Brilliance! The ol' Demon _pinch hits_ for his StarChild brother and knocks it outta the park wrong lyrics and all. Thus a rare concert Diamond is formed! \m/
The reason Gene didn't know all the words is probably (at least I think it is) because he didn't expect he had to sing it. When Paul got stuck his instict was to just sing, before even thinking. That's why he probably messed up a little.
You've seen performers throw tantrums over tech malfunctions like these. Paul handled this so well, I'm really impressed! What a pro, keeping the energy & spirits up in spite of getting stuck and Love Gun getting killed. Hats off to you, Paul! Day saver!
Sounds good. Different tempo could have been on Lick it Up or Creatures with Gene on vocals. Love how people talk about Peter and Ace yet they kept this going flawlessly.
The same thing happened in Fort Myers Florida and Ace pulled him on to the stage. So Paul was able to start the song and finish the song thanks to AceFrehley.
God this is FUNNY. I give Simmons credit for doing his best with it. I agree with the guy below that the bass line isn't an easy one to sing and play at the same time. Especially without (probably) having rehearsed it before. And the song's key was written to suit Paul's voice, not his. All things considered, it's a pretty good save on his part.
Wow, that was so crazy. You could tell something wasn't right when the lift took Paul up, it seemed like it snagged on something right then. How did they get him down? Kudos to Gene for picking up the slack. I liked that immensely. Poor Paul! Hang in there baby. :)
For people wondering why Gene gets the lyrics wrong, you gotta understand he's never had to sing lead vocals for this song. Plus playing the bass line for this song PLUS singing would be extremely hard
I mix up my 4 letter words and names too. Forever is Paul, written with Michael Bolton. This vid has Paul stranded and Gene tries to sing Love Gun without knowing the words. Gene is an over-achiever as far as writing songs. I've heard that he'll bring 30 songs to be considered for each album. Paul writes them as he needs them. Watching old KISS concerts here, gives me knew respect for Gene. (except for this vid!)
lol...true professional of Gene to pick up the slack
i agree
subtle name lol
Gene's voice fits this song really good! He should learn the lyrics and record an own version of Love gun!
That's the most stupid idea I've ever heard.
Or he can just sing all the songs live.
@@EthanAndViolaVlogs They sure do need it now!
@@zachsmith3 without Paul its definitely over! Thats why its called the end of the road tour! Paul calls tge shots anyway!
Great ! But not sure Stan would like Gene singing his anthem 😅
Chapeau for Gene for handling this professionally and picking up the song!

Gene had to sing it, Paul is somewhat stuck. ;)
David Collins 100% agree!!
Ace was probably laughing his ass off the whole time.
ace probably couldnt hear the difference, to busy staring down at his fret board making sure he plays the right chords
I'm sure Ace and Peter had a good laugh backstage at this. I feel sorry for the poor sap that lost his job over this mishap. I don't know which was funnier. Paul stuck up there like a sack of potatoes or Gene mangling the lyrics. Funny stuff.
Surfs Up ya that was pretty funny! They should have left Paul up there so he couldn't sing because he can't sing anymore!
Lol Or crying ✌👽
You know he was. LMFAO
I was at this show (the last time i saw KISS) and yes, they played it again after they got Paul back to the stage
This is very cool actually. I like when things sometimes dont go as expected, it makes the concert unique. Nowadays, Kiss is so "rigid" that if you watch one concert, you watched all concerts of the tour
A lesson in humility for Paul. Great vocal from Gene.
I imagine Peter and Gene were like: "WTF"
And Ace was like: "LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL"
Hahahhahaha
Ace was like “hi I’m ace what do I do”
Gene: Shit.
Peter: Ah crap.
Ace: AHAHAHAHAHA!!!
That's amazing
Ace was like “hey look, it’s rock and roll” 🤪🤪
I bet Peter and Ace were laughing their asses off during the whole performance!🤣
you see Peter grinning when it zooms in on him :-P
Hang in there Paul.
😆
OMMGGGG I giggled fitfully way harder then I should've :)
Yea, that's Paul hanging with the crowd. Damn nice of' him
The show must go on! Way to go Gene :)
I love how althought they have played this song for 33 years Gene still doesn't know the lyrics.
Probably had more to do with wanting to keep the bass parts correct. Singing and playing at the same time ain't easy.
@@gl3605 that and he’s just used to singing the background
This was actually in 1977 right after the record came out so... no he hadn't played it 33 years.

Not bad ! Gene sounds awesome !
lo que es improvisar que bien actuo la banda en especial Gene al ver que su compañero estaba atrapado y la musica continuaba
Spinal Tap moment LOL!
SO TRUE!
jajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaja

LMAO.... lucky I scrolled through, was going to write exactly the same thing
lol on Tom Snyder he claimed he could give the plot to any cartoon or horror movie, but he cant remember the lyrics to Love Gun lol.
I think its because he's playing a walking bassline and isn't used to singing this song while playing, rather than forgetting the words
Brilliance! The ol' Demon _pinch hits_ for his StarChild brother and knocks it outta the park wrong lyrics and all. Thus a rare concert Diamond is formed! \m/
If Gene knew the words, it would've sounded better than Paul
These gentlemen are the consummate professionals we heard about when we were young. They kept rocking and didn't panic in the slightest.🎸💪🎉👍.
It's all good, actually was quite interesting to see Gene do that. Thanks for posting.
Gene does a pretty good job!

Bro Ace and Peter both grinning like hell. Probably laughed their asses off after the show.
Quick thinking gene keeping the show going
Personally I think the fact that he did what he could and then added what sounded right to him was pretty damn clever
Rock On...Gene
Professionals!
Gene just picks up.
I’m just glad Paul didn’t fall or anything.
Imagine the words going through Paul’s mind though. 😂
👍👍👍🎸🎸🎸
Lol I think he wanted to beat all the crap out of dude who caused him to get stuck lol
I like Genes Version.
This video is a gem
What is ;more painful to Paul - getting stuck or listening to Gene mess up a song
P Daniel considering the circumstances I think they did pretty good
Whats really painful is listening to Paul sing it today. His voice is shot.
Nowdays though, wouldn't have to worry about it, the lipsynching could take over :D

I was at that show. Anaheim, California on the first farewell tour.
35 años tocando ese tema una noche atras de otra y no se sabe las dos minimas estrofas de memoria que tiene la cancion jajajajajajja un geniooo
Es que la canción no la canta él y no tenía razón para aprendersela xd
Gene Simmons is the true professional of KISS!
Think its awesome that Gene makes up his own versus. Damn! How long has he been playing this song?
Gene should sing more of Paul's songs since Paul's voice is so f 'ing shot.
This is a very cool find!
LOL you're dead on brother, this is one of the most Spinal Tap moments I've ever seen outside of Spinal Tap itself.
The same thing happened in Fort Myers Florida and Ace pulled him on to the stage. So Paul was able to start the song and finish the song thanks to AceFrehley.
LMAO!!! It's as if Gene never listened to the words before.
gene saved the show
Anaheim! Paul said Bummer! I really wanted to come out and see you! Gene got stuck dangling that night too!
Glad to see that Paul didn't get ticked off and walk of stage, but decided to hang around for the song.
This is a true Spinal Tap moment
Gene for the save

I love his new melodies. Really interesting and dramatic 1:15
I love watching pros handle a glitch. Good effort, Gene.
Gene didn't even get all the words right, and it's still good.

I remember a Sweden 1984 bootleg where he sang a verse of Detroit Rock City improvising the words (probably ' cause Paul lost his mic)... Just great!!

EL SHOW DEVE CONTINUAR!!
Hello Cleveland!
I was wondering why Paul was just hanging there doing nothing, lol. I wonder how often the cable got stuck.
How can Gene not remember one single lyric of their song?
To be fair, he got the opening “I really love you baby” line correct.
