"Tom Snydedr was at that point the preeminent interviewer. so we were honored to be on the show. Of course, as soon as we get on the show, it was clear that Ace, God bless him, was blitzed out of his mind." --Gene Simmons
"The first thing that hits me when I'm watching #thetomorrowshowwithtomsnyder is that we were clearly losing our edge. The costumes were ridiculous...We were becoming Vegas showgirls or something of a Disney movie, as opposed to the hard rockers that we started as." --Paul Stanley
Kiss (often stylized as KIϟϟ) is an American rock band formed in New York City in January 1973 by Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss. Well known for its members' face paint and stage outfits, the group rose to prominence in the mid-late 1970s with its shocking live performances, which featured fire breathing, blood-spitting, smoking guitars, shooting rockets, levitating drum kits, and pyrotechnics. The band has gone through several lineup changes, with Stanley and Simmons being the only members to feature in every lineup. The original and best-known lineup consists of Stanley (vocals and rhythm guitar), Simmons (vocals and bass), Frehley (lead guitar and vocals), and Criss (drums and vocals).
With their make-up and costumes, the band members took on the personae of comic book-style characters: the Starchild (Stanley), the Demon (Simmons), the Spaceman or Space Ace (Frehley), and the Catman (Criss). Due to creative differences, both Criss and Frehley had departed the group by 1982. In 1983, Kiss began performing without makeup and costumes, thus marking the beginning of the band's "unmasked" era that would last for over a decade. The band experienced a commercial resurgence during this era, with the Platinum-certified album Lick It Up successfully introducing them to a new generation of fans, and its music videos receiving regular airplay on MTV.
Kiss is regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of all time, as well as one of the best-selling bands of all time, having sold more than 75 million records worldwide, including 21 million RIAA-certified albums. Kiss also holds the title as America's No. 1 Gold record award-winning group of all time, having earned 30 Gold albums. Kiss has 14 Platinum albums, with three albums being multi-Platinum. On April 10, 2014, the four original members of Kiss were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Kiss was ranked by MTV as the ninth "Greatest Metal Band of All Time", and placed tenth on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list, as well as being ranked as the third "Best Metal and Hard Rock Live Band of All Time" by Loudwire magazine. Tom Snyder (1936 - 2007) was an American pioneering television personality and figure in broadcast journalism who brought a no non-sense attitude to broadcast television news. He was best known for his late nigh talk shows Tomorrow (NBC) and The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder (CBS). His engaging style combined with his irascible attitude, made him one of the best known journalists of his time, back when having a nationally televised and thought provoking late night talk show actually meant something. It was a totally different time in television, as the news was delivered as information with no spin or opinion of the newsman. He marked the end of an era.

Thanks for watching.
This is from DVD Box set.
best quality but incomplete. i have a VHS from the 1990s VHS tape trading days and it has the full show (as far as the KISS portion).
Poor gene & paul, so jealous that Peter & Ace get any attention at all…

Gene: takes himself too seriously
Ace: doesnt take anything seriously
Peter: meow im a cat!
Why is that true 😂

Watch it again. Paul's conflicted. Still laughing at Ace but looking at Gene for confirmation.
😂
“Actually I’m a plumber”
Gets me every time
That whole bit was hilarious and flirtatious 😅
Love it !
The pipe joke was it for me
Same here, Ace is so funny 😂😂😂
The plumber joke goes deeper when you know that ace auditioned for kiss when he saw a job ad on a newspaper, and one of the other two job postings on that clip was to be a plumber.... in another world, ace very well could have been a plumber instead of the lead guitarist for one of the hottest bands in the world.
Ace's laugh is so contagious that it made Gene Simmons smile
He has a great laugh !! You don't have to talk to be funny ! Just be genuine - thats why I love Ace
Yes, but very, very, briefly .
made Gene Smile? Gene wanted to kill Ace!
@@edcollins9377 Nah, they all had a good time. Gene is just not wasted, nor is Paul. Peter not that much. That´s Gene´s style, that´s all.

Pure Bronx.
You are absolutely right! And I am a former New Yorker who grew up in NYC during the Mad Men era of the 1960s. I speak American English with a New York accent. I grew up in the Borough of Queens, NYC in the neighborhoods of Woodside 1957 til 1961, Flushing 1961 til 1964, Richmond Hill 1964 til 1985. And neither me nor my late parents were born in NYC. Where were we born? In Havana,Cuba! And we emigrated to America legally on August 2, 1956 when I was a 2 month old baby.
5:59 Ace's "I don't take drugs" is just brilliant🤣
9:10 That zoom in with ,,Tell me about it" was gold
Finally, someone else got it.
Today was the first time I actually got the joke man 😂😂😂.
LMAO at first when I watched the video without seeing this comment I didn’t laugh but after seeing this comment I DIED LAUGHING😂😂😂
Either Ace is the best drunk in the world or he’s just a funny guy because this is brilliant.
That's smoke not drink 😂😅
@@Masksfamily85nah he’s plastered on liquor, he’s admitted he was nervous for this interview and on the way to the interview in the limo, Ace was in the back getting plastered on Stoli and then when he got to the studio, Bill Aucoin gave the group champagne as well which Ace just downed without thinking. I love Ace as much as the next guy but he’s gone on liquor and I’m sure a little bit of Snow White with Peter.
He was a combination of the two.

Or both.
Not just KISS’s best interview, but one of the best rock interviews of all of history, ever.

Nah, that honor goes to Them Crooked Vultures a couple decades later.

One of the funniest at least.
So good
"So your a space man?"
Ace- "no actually I'm a plumber" LOL!!
Gene: Negative, active
Paul: Negative, passive
Peter: Positive, passive
Ace: Positive, active
These four elements made KISS one of the most memorable and legendary bands ever...
I don't see that Paul is "negative". On the contrary, he symphasizes with Ace and is amused.. But he still is the frontman, the serious spokesman. Diplomacy is difficult, but he did a good job.
Ace can not be "active",
he is the "laziest" guy Paul ever met. Ace confirmed recently in "Facts Or Fiction" what Paul wrote.
And Ace's addiction can never be "positive"
This might be the most accurate comment in youtube history

How can you not laugh along with Ace?freaking hilarious counterpart to gene and paul.priceless!
He was drunk . Paul and Gene are were like... fuuuuck.... we're on TV and this guy shows up hammered acting like a fool... funny as fuck... but he's wasted.
It's rather tragic to watch Ace digging his own grave.
Don't you see? He is destructive to the bandmates and to the band. By making them ridiculous. No loyalty at all! But he doesn't realise that he himself looks and behaves comical. He thinks, he is the superstar who is in the position to make fools out of Paul and Gene. They tolerated him too long. My boss would have fired him immediately.
To a lot of KISS fans, Ace IS a superstar; thee superstar of the band. And every member has done destructive stuff... just not with drugs and alcohol. Gene whom I love speaks FAR TOO MUCH about politics and has a horrible reputation because of it and that has seriously impacted the band. But the reality is... it's rock'n roll and it is what it is. What band doesn't' do drugs and alcohol? Compared to Motley Crue, Aerosmith and the Stones... KISS are choirboys. LOL@@HappyMachorino-bd8no
@@KnockOffToyz
Keith Richards with or without drugs never made his own band ridiculous publicly. And whatever Gene/Paul did wrong, (they lost fans) but they were always loyal to their band. Of course, Ace was the superstar.
But no LOYALTY, no job. They gave him a second chance
No loyalty again? That's why the Tom Snyder interview for me is more tragic than comic. It shows a superstar and his selfdestructive tendencies.
@@HappyMachorino-bd8no I used to think Gene and Paul were just assholes but the older I get the more I understand why they gave Ace and Peter the boot. You just can't tolerate carelessness/unreliability running a multi-million dollar band the same as you cant with any other multi-million dollar business.
My parents woke me up when I was sleeping so I could watch this when I was 8 years old. I still remember this.
👍💯🤘
My stepmother would and has many times done the same thing. Couldn't ask for more.
You had cool parents then 👍. My mom was terrified of me paying attention to them. They're the reason I wanted to learn to play guitar in the first place. I was 13 at the time did I ask my parents for a guitar and eventually I got one but as I said my mom was not a fan of those guys at all my dad was kind of been different about it.
Same. I was about the same age too.
Was born in 92 , I obviously never experienced that but damn that's a treasure you must cherish forever !
If they were not in full costume and makeup, Gene being pissed at Ace wouldn't be nearly as funny.
Just four clowns.
-Ace
Absolutely true 😂🤣
Knowing that Gene and Paul are getting pissed.....is DELIGHTFUL !
unfortunately, I felt myself feeling the same way, Part of the greatness of this interview, is knowing that Gene is totally incensed, furious, pissed! I never felt that Paul was bad in this interview, obviously they had their interview scripted before hand, but when it went to hell, Paul seemed to go with it.
As a die hard Peter Criss fan and Ace, I loved it, because they gave them what they deserved, fact!!!
Ace's laugh was priceless!!!
It's sad that Gene took himself so damn serious that he expected everyone else to be quiet and let him do all the talking. That interview is epic because of Ace and his antics and laugh and Gene's reaction to it. It came off brilliantly.

Historic interview!
2 members having FUN with life.
2 members just wanting to talk business n being sticks in the mud!
I feel bad for Peter n Ace. They WERE part of the magic.
Gene n Paul better understand that.
The original chemistry is WHAT MADE KISS, KISS!!!
This was a major interview and ace and Peter were drunk and high embarrassing the other members infront of national tv espcially ace
You clearly have never ran a band before.
There was obviously more tension than chemistry in the band at that time for obvious reasons.
A"historic" or a hysteric interview? There is a lot of "chemistry", but it's rather in the substances A & P consumed. It's a bad, destructive chemistry. They were co-owners of the band they try to make ridiculous. Instead of loyalty, they were "sabotaging" their own band. And this "funny" interview confirms, what Paul wrote in his book.
@@HappyMachorino-bd8nopeter is NOT stoned at all ....he behaved quietly and correctly....on the other way....Tom Snyder himself seems to be Ace's accomplish ....he looks as he does not matter how Gene is pissed off....

Gene really likes to stay in character
he likes it a little toooo much
With Gene, its all about the money, sell the music and get caught up in the illusion and mystic of four unique players. The way Gene managed it all these years, now, he's filthy rich and the rest ain't doin so bad.
It’s face paint, but it’s not a character.

Just watching the looks gene and Paul give Ace and Peter, is priceless. You can see the hatred brewing. Why? Peter and Ace are the true rockers having fun.
I’m surprised that the Gene and Paul fanboys haven’t chimed in yet to tell you how wrong they think you are, because Ace was “making an ass of himself” and not being the consummate little professional businessman that he’s apparently supposed to be… because after all *THAT’S* what rock and roll is all about.
Who is enjoying life more in this interview. I think it's hilarious.
Snyder and Ace had comic chemistry … I love how Snyder gets into it “he goes up in the air… he flies around … we’re outta here “ 😂

The Dynasty era in 1979 was after their peak and going down. I remember the Viewmaster films around this time...
Ace made that interview so much more entertaining not boring like other interviews, absolutely steller and memorable, just having the time of their lives, Tom said he had an awful time, I beg to differ, it was a great, honest, fun, cool and priceless interview ever, I remember this interview back in 1979, me and my family stood up just to watch it and it was worth it, the good old days if Rock & Roll, the best of times & the 1980s.
I think Tom was being sarcastic when he said he was having an awful time
Yeah, what the person above me just said. I remember reading an article about Tom shortly after he passed away, where they interviewed people who knew him well, and it was mentioned that he had an absolute blast during that interview, and that it was a career highlight. I’m sure he was most likely being sarcastic about it being “awful”.

What a great sport was Tom Snyder. Such a wonderful snap shot of history.
This interview is fantastic. Ace will always be my favourite member of KISS.
I had only seen a small portion if this. Seeing the full 33 minutes makes me realize what a big pussy Gene is in hating this appearance. If it wasn’t for Ace and Peter the interview would be sulking Gene never smiling, pushed all the way back in his chair like some lizard king on his throne doing his best James Dean attitude. What an incredible downer he was. Paul was ok, animated, seemed into it. And Tom was loving this, joining in the fun. Do we want the Gene Simmons KISS interview or this? Ace wasn’t exactly slurring his words or falling asleep, he was a functional drunk and having a good time. Gene in years since has over exaggerated the quality of this clip, I loved it.
Yeah, I’ve never understood all the talk about how Ace was so wasted here that it was unbelievable. I mean obviously he’s lit up, but as you said it’s not like he’s incoherent and drooling all over himself. He’s just having a good time, and so was Tom for that matter. Apparently all these Gene fanboys equate having a bit of fun and letting off steam with full blown drug addiction and alcoholism. I’m not saying Ace was never an addict. He very famously was, but in this instance it’s much more innocuous than some people are making it out to be.
I remembered Gene and Paul were more serious and irritated, but look at this. They are all having fun with Ace´s divine laughter. The plumber is legendary.
"It would still be a rip roaring rock and roll show..." Jesus... Gene's talking like it's 1955!!

Gene,... just fuming.... hilarious!
The kiss cover band may have had their last show concert ever but let's be real ace and peter were the original band. Because after the left that was the end of the real band that was truly the end of the road for the original band.
As far as I’m concerned it was over before Ace and Peter even left. Like right after Alive 2, or whenever it was they made their solo albums. 1978.
Yes as a fan of them all my life this seems like the end of the magic
Yup. That's definitely where it was so right it was wrong vice-versa
I’d say the magic ended at least a year before this. Right about the time they decided to make their solo albums. That’s when they should’ve called it a day.
By this time, Kiss was in decline. Ace was offering levity.
Yep. I’ve always thought they should have called it a day right after they recorded their solo albums. Everything they did after that was pure stink as far as I’m concerned. No wonder Ace was getting wasted 24-7 at that point.
It's both painful and hilarious to watch this. They truly did there best to stick together.
👍 For me is was more painful than funny. To see how Ace is "sabotaging" the band. And he still was co-owner, it was HIS band, too. Gene and Paul have never understood his self-destructiveness.
@@HappyMachorino-bd8no How was he sabotaging the band? Rock n' roll is about having fun. Ace was making it fun. Gene looked like someone who took life way too seriously, yet he was wearing a silly monster costume, spitting up tomato juice, and wiggling his tongue wanting people to think he was a real monster! Perhaps, he thought he was Lon Chaney, but the only person he was scaring were a few of the high strung 6- 8 year olds that were there with their mommies. However, Ace and Paul tried to be good musicians and I think they succeeded although I would never put them in the same category as Pink Floyd, Rush, Led Zep, or David Bowie. In regards to this interview, I felt sorry for Paul. It seem like he wanted to join in with the fun that Peter and Ace were having, but he'd look over at Gene and see the steam coming out of his ears and he didn't know what to do. I guess he felt he had to keep a straight face and stay neutral so he didn't piss anybody off.
@@edcollins9377
Paul uses this word "sabotaging" a few times in his book. I can't tell you all. But already in this "early" interview it becomes clear what he means. When Paul says, people are crying: Ace interrupts and says, when they see what they have paid for! And he means Paul and Gene. He means his own band! My boss would write me a formal warning and then fire me immediately when I make him or our company ridiculous in the presence of customers. Paul symphasizes with Ace (he liked him), but
then it became unbearable.
And it's clear in this interview that Ace and Peter would sell their band for one joke only. There is no loyalty. Rock And Roll is having fun? Yes, but damaging your own band?
Self-destructive!
@@HappyMachorino-bd8noOh, I think the Beatles joked about each other and their band regularly and did quite alright!
If you want to make a big problem out of that like Paul and Gene do you've got the right to do that. Funny enough they made their own band look more like a joke in the last years than Ace and Peter ever did or could have done.

"I'm the TROUT Player".
That's Hilarious! 😂😂😂
If Ace hadnt been Ace the entire thing would have been a note in history as Oh cool KISS. As it is, it reveals the good, the bad and the ugly of a Supergroup that were incredibly famous at this time. It was a treat for the fans to see their heroes just being themselves. That is the way Gene is, the Paul, Peter and Ace are also. It wasnt an embarassment it was a fantastic moment in time that showed joy, conflict, over the top ridiculousness of fame and everything in between. A time capsule Gene and Paul should be thankful they have the priviledge of looking back on as what they once were as a real band.
9:12 best laugh of the lot 😂
