What's funny is that, in the opening intro, Tom Snyder speaks about the "bass" (pronounced like the fish bass) player [Gene Simmons] @ 0:47. Reading his card and he doesn't even know how to pronounce bass as a musical instrument. Then the band gave him a hard time about it and they all had a good laugh. This is a real blast from the past for me. Both in terms of Tom Snyder and the Tomorrow show, which i used to watch, and because of Kiss. I saw them live in like 1975. I was in high school and I remember how blown away I and all my friends were at how incredible the Kiss concert was. The sound, the pyrotechnics, the performances and the costumes. We had never seen anything like it. It was in a theater in Davenport. Iowa and part of that show ended up on the Kiss Alive! album, which we all bought of course. Ah, good memories.

Stanley was a beta male who followed Gene's lead no matter what. - Imagine being in a rock band in 1979 and your bass player wants nothing but "professionalism" 24/7. - Maybe if Stanley had sided with Frehley and Criss and kicked Gene out of the band they might've made more records together, with better music.

Actually it had been building up for awhile prior to this interview, this was just the first time that the public saw them divided, Gene and Paul vs Peter and Ace. By the next album, "Unmasked", Peter quit the band. Ace quit approximately 1 1/2 to 2 years later during the recording of "The Elder".
Peter egged Ace on, and Ace made a complete ass out of himself. Kiss Meets the Phantom was the grenade, and this Late Show appearance was the explosion that destroyed the first version of Kiss.

We can hardly hear it but Peter wrote in his book about this show. Gene tried to 'correct' them all the time and to 'manage the situation'. When Ace says that he doesn't do drugs (and sounds ironic), Gene says 'He's kidding.' When Peter is talking about collecting guns, Gene says 'Toy guns.' Also when Peter talks about dreaming about being a gangster, he adds 'In the movies'. Peter also wrote that this was the first time they could show their real selves to the public with Ace. He was fired a few months later.

I'm a huge KISS fan! This interview is very famous. Gene and Paul were obviously not digging Ace that night. Tom Snyder, however, seemed to get a kick out of it. Less than a year after this, Peter would leave, thus breaking up the original four. Did you see the recent A&E two-part doc on KISS?
I remember years ago reading about this interview, Gene and Paul saw it as an opportunity to use it as a means to show the general public what KISS was really all about and to be taken seriously but what they didn't count on was a nervous Ace drinking too much champagne backstage! At this point in KISS's career, their relationship with each other was strained and when Peter saw how Ace was behaving, he was enjoying how Gene and Paul had lost control of the interview and he joined Ace in embarrassing them. You can tell in several moments of the interview that Gene and Paul were upset (mostly Gene) but trying to control what they could. Still, it's a classic interview and shows sides of the band rarely seen!

Tom Snyder seems to be very aware of the tension in the room and at times he seems to be laughing right along with Ace. Snyder really seems to be enjoying what is happening on live tv: the demise of a band.

I miss Tom Snyder. He was so damn great at talking to people. Too bad he kept taking a backseat to shows that had more obvious forms of entertainment.

I remember years ago reading about this interview, Gene and Paul saw it as an opportunity to use it as a means to show the general public what KISS was really all about and to be taken seriously but what they didn't count on was a nervous Ace drinking too much champagne backstage!
At this point in KISS's career, their relationship with each other was strained and when Peter saw how Ace was behaving, he was enjoying how Gene and Paul had lost control of the interview and he joined Ace in embarrassing them. You can tell in several moments of the interview that Gene and Paul were upset (mostly Gene) but trying to control what they could.
Still, it's a classic interview and shows sides of the band rarely seen!

@@KeithK410 Joking about the holocaust is very tasteless (in my opinion anyways, so many people died). I can’t stand Gene but his family was held captive in the holocaust. Gene & Paul both have dealt with antisemitism their whole life. I still love Ace, but I still think it’s pretty f*cked up of him to joke around about that in front of two Jewish men.

Wow! I have never watched this til today😂. I was 6 yrs old when this aired. After seeing this I can truly say that Gene Simmons was and is a true hater! Omg I would cringe if I was him. He should be so ashamed of trying to ruin this interview. He obviously cant handle the fact that NOBODY is paying him any attention. His personality sucks! Ace and Peter saved this from being a boring piece. No wonder they wanted them out of the group. Gene and Paul have zero personality aside from the stage.
If this interview had gone the way that Gene and Paul had wanted, a "serious" interview, it would not be as iconic as it is! It would have been just another ordinary KISS interview!
And Gene himself said as much later.
