Actually it had been building up for awhile prior to this interview, this was just the first time that the public saw them divided, Gene and Paul vs Peter and Ace. By the next album, "Unmasked", Peter quit the band. Ace quit approximately 1 1/2 to 2 years later during the recording of "The Elder".
Peter egged Ace on, and Ace made a complete ass out of himself. Kiss Meets the Phantom was the grenade, and this Late Show appearance was the explosion that destroyed the first version of Kiss.

When Ace says that he doesn't do drugs (and sounds ironic), Gene says 'He's kidding.' When Peter is talking about collecting guns, Gene says 'Toy guns.' Also when Peter talks about dreaming about being a gangster, he adds 'In the movies'. Peter also wrote that this was the first time they could show their real selves to the public with Ace. He was fired a few months later.
Gene and Paul were so pissed off by the charismatic personality of Ace and Peter. No matter how hard Gene and Paul tried telling jokes they couldn't compete with Ace lol

I remember years ago reading about this interview, Gene and Paul saw it as an opportunity to use it as a means to show the general public what KISS was really all about and to be taken seriously but what they didn't count on was a nervous Ace drinking too much champagne backstage! At this point in KISS's career, their relationship with each other was strained and when Peter saw how Ace was behaving, he was enjoying how Gene and Paul had lost control of the interview and he joined Ace in embarrassing them. You can tell in several moments of the interview that Gene and Paul were upset (mostly Gene) but trying to control what they could. Still, it's a classic interview and shows sides of the band rarely seen!

The dynamics of their personalities is crystal clear in this interview. Gene wanted so much to be taken seriously. Paul seems a bit torn between what Gene wants and the careless comedy of Peter and Ace. It was easy to see how that couldn't continue. That said, KISS was cutting edge and changed the rock scene forever, but they would have never made it without the gimmickry and makeup. They weren't the most talented band, but they did the most with what they had. I had the opportunity to meet them later in 1987 when they were unmasked. Peter had been replaced by Eric Carr and Ace was replaced by Bruce Kulick. We won tickets to see them in Beaumont, Texas. We also won backstage passes and were supposed to have dinner with the band. Got to meet Paul and Eric. Gene wouldn't even come into the room, and nobody knew where Bruce was. Then the promoters had us between the crowd barrier and the stage and Gene's bodyguard got all bent out of shape about it, so we had to move out from there. The show wasn't good. Wasp opened (those guys were weird), followed by Poison, and then KISS. We ended up just leaving early. On the upside, I got a date with the hot DJ at the radio station.
These 4 geniuses pulled the biggest prank in the music biz, turning it into $$. But yeah, the shows were great; just got weird @ the last one ('78), with kids all over the place. Again, fkn geniuses, man.
Tom Snyder seems to be very aware of the tension in the room and at times he seems to be laughing right along with Ace. Snyder really seems to be enjoying what is happening on live tv: the demise of a band.

Wow! I have never watched this til today😂. I was 6 yrs old when this aired. After seeing this I can truly say that Gene Simmons was and is a true hater! Omg I would cringe if I was him. He should be so ashamed of trying to ruin this interview. He obviously cant handle the fact that NOBODY is paying him any attention. His personality sucks! Ace and Peter saved this from being a boring piece. No wonder they wanted them out of the group. Gene and Paul have zero personality aside from the stage.
If this interview had gone the way that Gene and Paul had wanted, a "serious" interview, it would not be as iconic as it is! It would have been just another ordinary KISS interview!

The dynamics of their personalities is crystal clear in this interview. Gene wanted so much to be taken seriously. Paul seems a bit torn between what Gene wants and the careless comedy of Peter and Ace. It was easy to see how that couldn't continue. That said, KISS was cutting edge and changed the rock scene forever, but they would have never made it without the gimmickry and makeup. They weren't the most talented band, but they did the most with what they had. I had the opportunity to meet them later in 1987 when they were unmasked. Peter had been replaced by Eric Carr and Ace was replaced by Bruce Kulick. We won tickets to see them in Beaumont, Texas. We also won backstage passes and were supposed to have dinner with the band. Got to meet Paul and Eric. Gene wouldn't even come into the room, and nobody knew where Bruce was. Then the promoters had us between the crowd barrier and the stage and Gene's bodyguard got all bent out of shape about it, so we had to move out from there. The show wasn't good. Wasp opened (those guys were weird), followed by Poison, and then KISS. We ended up just leaving early. On the upside, I got a date with the hot DJ at the radio station.

These 4 geniuses pulled the biggest prank in the music biz, turning it into $$. But yeah, the shows were great; just got weird @ the last one ('78), with kids all over the place. Again, fkn geniuses, man.
Tom Snyder seems to be very aware of the tension in the room and at times he seems to be laughing right along with Ace. Snyder really seems to be enjoying what is happening on live tv: the demise of a band.
