1975 : "Mistake" : Recorded at Larabee Studios, Los Angeles. (Noted details by Jeff Suhs) "Mistake" had been written for the first album, but had not been used at the time. The song is an outright country and western ballad in G featuring acoustic guitars bottleneck slides and an overall vibe much more consistent with Wicked Lester than even acoustic offerings like Hard Luck Woman". Recorded at the same sessions as "Rock And Roll All Nite" in California. The fact that Paul sings lead on the verses may indicate that he penned the song though no byline is included on any of the paperwork. Gene clearly shares vocal duties on the verses and on a brief bridge that modulates from G up to B. There are sporadic embellishments throughout that might qualify as a solo though they are such standard licks that it's impossible to determine who is playing them. As it stands it is the earliest demo
Great pics from Kiss at a great time. They were having fun and having laughs before money, greed and egos destroyed the hottest band in the world. Cool tune as well.
The more I hear this..the more i want to hear it. I love the pics you chose too. My favs are group pic at .17,a great pic of paul at 2:56 and the way I always want to picture Ace at 3:24. Thanks for posting! I hope something else pops out of the KISS vault! Great Band!
i think it sounds as though it is playing slow, just a touch. first lead break sounded like Paul trying to be Ace, and the little lead pickin' toward the end sounded very Ace. love it, but i love everything KISS! thanx for putting this up!
Why is it that all of the really great KISS stuff comes when Gene and Paul have not even started KISS yet? This song is miles above anything that KISS did back in the 70's and I love KISS but I have to be honest. . .
The reason this sound so familiar to a lot of people is the Guns and Roses song off of Lies Lies Lies. "I used to love her But I had To Kill Her". the acoustic version. This was done years before Guns came out.
It is reported that this song was written for their first LP but was held back. It's a demo that reflects the popular folk-flavored rock of the time (ala, Rod Stewart) and was considered again for Dressed to Kill. Personally, I like it but I wouldn't want it as a part of a KISS LP. A box set cut would be killer, but I'm glad that they narrowed their sonic scope. Bands like PFloyd have a broad range, which spectrum KISS has always been capable of writing, but I've never wanted that for KISS.
"Mistake" should have been released on KISS "Dressed To Kill" with Peter Criss on lead vocals!! Peter Criss had one of the greatest faux British raspy vocal styles similar to Steve Marriott (Small Faces lead vocalist & Humble Pie co lead vocalist) Rod Stewart (The Faces co lead vocalist) Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople lead vocalist) Michael Des Barres (Silverhead & Detective lead vocalist) Paul Rodgers (Free & Bad Company lead vocalist) Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin lead vocalist) Orignally, Paul Stanley wrote "Hard Luck Woman" for Rod Stewart & Rod Stewart really should have recorded a version of the song cuz it would have been a HUGE HIT for “Rod The Mod” !! Especially when Rod’s solo albums at the time in the mid 70’s we’re becoming increasingly more commercial after he moved to the U.S. and had Stax Records Booker T & The MG’s & The Memphis Horns back him up on his Warner Brothers mid to late 70’s studio albums. Rod’s greatest musical period in The Faces and his earliest solo career running concurrently & the 4 Faces studio albums on Warner Brothers & the 5 solo studio albums on Mercury Records. Anyways, Paul Stanley had Peter Criss sing lead vocals on “Hard Luck Woman” & it also should have been a hit song for KISS coming off the back of the HUGE commercial success of “Beth" power ballad also sung by Peter Criss…
I've been saying that for years, and I'm always surprised no one really sees it. Let Me Know, Room Service, Don'cha Hesitate....but really, every band from the 70s owes a ton to the sound the Stones formulated on Beggars Banquet thru Exile.
Yeah...it think it sounds You Got the Silver from Let It Bleed, at least in the begging....no wait, I'm thinking No Expectations off of Beggar's Banquet...
This song has a whiff of Eagles (rather like "Love Is Blind" ). And yes, very Stones-y; Paul and Gene borrowed quite liberally from the Stones, The Beatles, The Who, and other similar bands, and that's no secret (they've divulged it themselves). Maybe a 2013 acoustic version? This would've been a fun one for the '96 MTV Unplugged album. And KEEP the slide guitar- that's a refreshing element!
How different would the world be had they kept the same look and went country? Something to ponder and laugh a bit but this is still an awesome song. Not just saying that as a kiss fan. Id love it if i heard some random bar band play it. Good is good and that is it.
Sounds like they were trying to trend with Led Zepplin, using a slide---I like the sound, but I'm sure in 1973, it was a bad move. Glad somebody realized it.
This isn't Wicked Lester, gene hadn't developed this vocal style, plus it's obvious that it's Ace's lead work and peter on drums, I'm pretty every other video wouldn't say it's Kiss too.
This is not KISS but rather Paul singing with Wicked Lester. If you notice Wicked Lester was a much better musical group than KISS. But KISS became much greater than Wicked Lester would have ever been. Wicked Lester would have maybe put out 1 or 2 records then faded into obscurity.
Well you suck for hating KISS! lol! J/K. To each's own. But you can't join our Kiss Army! lol. Anyway, this song is actually pretty cool and I love hearing songs from my favorite bands that I've never heard before! It has a Rolling Stones or an Eagle's sound don't you think? Thanks for posting it! Rock On- Lawson Welker :> )
One of the best kiss songs ever
sounds more like Wicked Lester, Kiss with slide is just bizarre LOL
i love it .....lifelong kiss fan here never heard this until just now .....I actually thought it was a MIstake ....not a song called mistake...lol

I love this song! I love the harmonies on the vocals. Maybe Peter could have sung this one with his gravelly voice.
Sounds Awesome! Reminds of the Stones' "Wild Horses"
It's a good song...

This is a great song and photos thanks!
Thanks for uploading KISS band Demo Mistake I really Love this ❤❤❤❤❤
Should have put it on an album for some sound diversity. That’s solid rock n roll music well played and written.
This was Wicked Lester, it has been on various bootlegs
would have never guessed that was KISS. Nice tune.
こんなの、こんな隙間いっぱいの曲 なんだか懐かしい。これが原点こんなやつまとめたCD欲しい。

It doesn't matter. They don't need you to love them. They have us......
I would like to hear KISS do this again these days! Only without much updating. I like this version tho.... it tells of an era that I miss!
Great song
I was at a private solo performance accoustic set of Paul Stanley on KISS Kruise V. He played this! The video is online
+A1CPassini Did he explain the origins or time frame of this song?
+Glen Gamble Unfortunately he didnt
+Glen Gamble January '75, part of the DTK demos.
Great pics of the early and ONLY KISS.....
It would have been a MISTAKE to put this on one of their albums; it's country as hell!!!
Love the slide guitar
The guitarsolo is clearly Ace.. so It´s Kiss. The song was written just before the recording of the first album.
Why is it that all of the really great KISS stuff comes when Gene and Paul have not even started KISS yet? This song is miles above anything that KISS did back in the 70's and I love KISS but I have to be honest. . .
Cool 😎 pics
I miss steak too. :(
+Max Cherry If only i was not so poor.
Missing steak is never a happy turn of events.
LOL
are u vegan?
LMAO
Good song
Great song...sounds a little bit like "Shambala" from Three Dog Night at times...Thanks for this! Probably close to the same time period!
The reason this sound so familiar to a lot of people is the Guns and Roses song off of Lies Lies Lies. "I used to love her But I had To Kill Her". the acoustic version. This was done years before Guns came out.
I think the song is called "Mistake." Don't know what could've given me that idea though.
Wow!!!!!!

Wow it sounds a little southern rock kinda. Not bad at all.
Cool tune
AWESOME TUNE!!
I would believe Paul cannibalized this tune when he wrote Hard luck woman...
This must be from the Wicked Lester days, because you'd never hear slide guitar on a 70's Kiss album.
@VenetianIsle In his book he says he had a car accident the day before this photo shoot and had to wear only part of his make up!

Cool tune but i bet the picture from the first album cover is one Peter would like to have back.
Cool little tune, but much too tame and good-timey to be on a KISS record. The band definitely made the right call to leave it off an album.
If anything, it sounds too much like Hard Luck Woman...
I like the pre chorus.
si c'est GENIAL NICE !!!

I wish Gene and Paul would do some stuff like this now that KISS in done .
1:43 i should have told her..... that it was lunchtime........I MISS STEAK
LOL
Wow! KISS does country !
KISSTONES !!
that's Paul Stanley when he was thinking of leaving KISS and going country because of grunge
That was KISS...?! I thought that -- what with the steel/slide geetars and what-not -- it was music from the movie, "Deliverance".
i have it on cd...from the box set....
Like the stones
Have to say I kinda like it....slide guitar in kiss... too bad they didn't put some of these on an album... ✌👽
Great pix
@RockJim72 Ah! Now if I understand, it happens that I'm from Argentina and my English is not very good.
Thanks for commenting!
0:57 Peters early makeup reminds me of Heathcliff.
Yeah...it think it sounds You Got the Silver from Let It Bleed, at least in the begging....no wait, I'm thinking No Expectations off of Beggar's Banquet...
Sounds good!
So rare it's on UA-cam...
Back when they were called Wicked Lester !
Ace all the way!!!!!!!!!!
I'm the first one to comment on this cool video !!!
@YERBLUES87 What don't ya understand? I dig the tune, although it sounds like I've heard it before, just not with Kiss ......
sometimes, when you listen to the rolling stones, you can hear KISS, and when you listen to the KIss, you hear the stones
Is this Wicked Lester with Stephen on slide guitar?
I think it sounds like a great Ros Stewart song...
This song has a whiff of Eagles (rather like "Love Is Blind" ). And yes, very Stones-y; Paul and Gene borrowed quite liberally from the Stones, The Beatles, The Who, and other similar bands, and that's no secret (they've divulged it themselves).

I reallyreally dig this one ... although it sounds very familiar???
This isn't Wicked Lester, gene hadn't developed this vocal style, plus it's obvious that it's Ace's lead work and peter on drums, I'm pretty every other video wouldn't say it's Kiss too.
Yes, but is Paul at lead vocals, Gene is in the choir. A song that it would have been fine in the Paul Stanley's 1978 Kiss solo album.
Wicked Lester reject I think. It has that wicked Lester/Grateful Dead flavor to it.
@YERBLUES87 Glad you understand now .... Have a great day :-)
it cant be, because gene is in the background vocals
I love it. The southern bluesy sound. Sounds like something I'd be hearing in the bayou in Louisiana
wicked lester...all their shit sounded like this
@MrGod1973 oh yeah!!! thank you so much!!!!!
@faithlessaaa Interesting. I see Sweet Ophelia as the seed of Hard Luck Woman.
Rolling Stones influenced
kiss rock kiss
closest thing i can think of is Hard luck woman
It's not 'I Miss Steak' it's "A Mistake'
@RockJim72 Also, thank you very much!
Kiss or Wicked Lester?
It sounds a lot like Hard Luck Woman , Same kind of tempo and breaks.
The pictures are killer but why do some of them move? It makes you wanna trrow up lol
Guitar solo sounds like Free's Ride On A Pony.... Influences...
@RockJim72 I do not understand, sorry
KISS Aloha-style .-)
very good song.....
Sounds like the Stones
This is like them trying to sound like The Eagles
well they named it right
Ace playing slide? What?
SLIDE GUITAR
Sounds like Six Feet Under Guns and Roses
hippie KISS?
I cant believe this before the first kiss album This is very country ish
