Modified Subaru Forester XT W/ Hand Controls - One Take

- Опубліковано 29 сер 2024
- This Subaru Forester XT has been prepped with a full STI engine swap, upgraded suspension and brake components, flared fenders, and, most importantly, hand controls, as its owner is paralyzed from the waist down. The owner, Major, impressively simulates a manual transmission by controlling the throttle, brake, and shift lever all with his right hand, then lets Matt have a go at the hand-controlled Subie.
Hello to all. I am Major Lewis The owner of the Forester XT with Hand Controls. Just wanted to first say to everyone I appreciate all the great positive comments and support for the video Matt put together to help me show how I drive an automatic Subaru. Well I just wanted to clarify that I am a T4 paraplegic and still have booth legs. I wanted help everyone understand what I was trying Show you. I drive an automatic vehicle simply because I can't afford to get hand controls for a manual vehicle and it is hard to find persons around SoCal that can install a set up for a manual vehicle. I mean I prefer to own an STI six speed over an auto any day. But I love the Subaru brand owned a 22B in Japan when I was Stationed there during my second tour in the Navy. But when I discussed making the Video with Matt I wanted to show others who drive the Automatic Subaru's such as mine can still have fun with it like a manual. So I figured it out and it worked pretty good. Like I was the only downfall is that I my Subie is a 4 speed with overdrive. I have owned 4 Subaru's not including the 22B in Japan. My first one was a bug-eye sedan WR Blue and it was manual. I got injured and had to sell it then purchased a Bug-eye Wagon and that is where shifting automatic started. From there Eagle-eye wagon and now a Forester which It my Favorite one out the 4. But I just wanted everyone to know I just wanted to show that despite my disability, I will not stop moving forward and encourage other to follow there dreams no matter what. My dream has always been to race cars. I want to see someone with a disability like mine to race in the 24hr LeMans. I know it is a unrealistic dream but it is my dream. Thank though for you kind words and support. I will be racing the Forester in SCCA, NASA and Time Attack event in the near future. I will be posting footage of how I shift on the track in the canyon at time. So stay tuned. Thanks again.
Cool car Major! Thank you for sharing your story.
Dude, you're the fuckin man. Seriously. Its a terrible fucking shame that a Navy Veteran got dealt this hand, you don't deserve it, but man oh man are you totally killing it. Its literally like you took a serious fall off your horse, one that would cripple most people are scare them from ever riding again, and you stood up, dusted off your hands, and got right back on and kept going.
I believe there is a term that suits you well. Trying to remember it.. on the tip of my toungue.. Oh yeah, I remember now..
LIKE A BOSS.
Keep on keepin on man :)
Major Lewis Thanks for serving in the army sir
sick car dude, I used to shift my old subaru like that, literally only downside was that it was a 4 spd
Major Lewis First of all... Buddy, God Bless you for being a carowner and driver that is among the most laid back I have ever seen. God Bless you for your service, and I wish 'nothing' but the absolute best for you.
Secondly, for the past few months I have been dreaming/thinking of a clutch design you could attempt.
Simple in design, but I don't have the experience in engineering to do it myself.
If you (Or Matt ) want to email me, i'll be more than happy to give you my ideas for no cost at all, as a gift for you being the best driver ever seen on TST. (Just a name drop would be fine for me. ^^

Who the f*** is giving thumbs down to a guy who's paralysed, performed all his own mods and drives like a boss with hand controls? Much respect and admiration Major, you are amazing buddy! Peace
No legs but a million times more personality than the rest of the guest on the channel. Cool dude.
This is so cool... Now why would anyone *thumbs down* a video like this? REALLY? This guy is cool.
DoctaM3 Hey Docta!
Evo Vets Club members. Those guys take their $hit too seriously.
DoctaM3 why he did call oh boy a compulsive masturbater. then hits him with ppl like you so idk. Or maybe because the car is lame and no legs calls himself a race car driver
Get this guy a Go Fund Me so he can get himself a manual.
Chris R just what i was thinking
My first thought on this video as well, Matt lets hook this man up!
Matt- do this....lending your name to this would give it the cred it needs....
I'm Down, Seems like he has a good heart! God Bless Him!
Stuff the manual bullshit up your ass.
Fantastic example of someone who doesn't let his disability limit his passion for car, good on him
This guy is missing his legs and driving perfectly fine, and half of the people in this country don't know how to use their blinker.
They know how, they just dont give a fuck and are selfish and self absorbed
this is one of the coolest one takes ever!
thank you for your service Major!!
hoorah!
I'm glad to see that man is still finding the positives out of life. Kick ass car and kick ass mentality.
Love that this guy is still getting some of the satisfaction of shifting through gears. Can't get enough of the boxer sound, and the colour is dope.
That angry toaster is one of the best looking Forrester's I've ever seen
It looks more like an arrogant toaster to me lol
angrogant toaster
That is the most badass thing. nothing stops a car enthusiast at least a real one. Salute to this dude !
Mad respect to this guy! Amazing human right there
How the hell does anyone put a thumbs down on a video like this??
I just read a comment that this vid is "so fucking american" somehow, so there's that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Ironically thumbs down in this case is 'faster'.
Lol. I will never understand some people.
32 douchebags that are not in the car culture and merely internet "tough" guys whom likely get touched by their uncles.
I reckon its a lot better than pity likes, they guys a vet, I'm sure he doesnt care which button 30 children click.
Wow, I've never heard an automatic sound like a manual, and he does it with one HAND! So cool! 👍
What an inspiration. Rad dude and rad car. Freaking good for him for pursuing his hobbies and not letting anything get in his way.
This is the coolest thing, mad props to this guy for making the best of the hand he was dealt.
Great guy and great vehicle. Foresters done up are absolute weapons and the ultimate family haulers. Nice vid.
This is amazing. I don't know if Major is gonna read any of these comments but this made me smile. Follow your dreams people. Well done, sir.
Manually shifting an automatic with hand controls shooting fire. Badass
This guy is awesome. Doesn't let a disability get in his way. True car guy
Best One Take. Period
I'm sure this video is going to be seen by someone out there in the same situation, or similar and inspire them to do the same...AWESOME!!
Cant beat a fresh One Take at 10pm :P Respect from Sydney Australia
Matt... seriously, one of your best One Takes. Love it when you change it up like this. Major: Your car is bad ass! And you interview really really well. Thanks guys for a great video!!!
He needs a RHD import! Then his hand controls and his shifter would match! I could see this dude whipping the canyons in a hand control R32 GTR all day!
What a cool guy. Letting you driving something that some people flat out could not wrap their brains around and wanting to help you learn to shift it!
Thanks for showing all types of cars and drivers, there is so much diversity in the car scene it's nice to see it get represented.
This man is something else, I honestly wouldn't ever think of ever driving again, but damn I feel for this guy.
I drive a bone stock Forrester and before that a bone stock Jeep. I don't track day and have zero interest in modding my own car (helping others is a totally different story). That said, if you told me I would never be able to drive again. I wouldn't see the purpose to life. From 15 hour road trips to my 30 minute commute to work, whenever I'm behind the wheel it's a good day. I have mad respect for Major not giving up on a dream in the face of resistance.
Simple Skyline why wouldn't you?
What a dope car! Listen to that sounds! OMG
Props to the guy for driving AND shifting. It takes skill and balls and he even drives fast and on a track!
Awesome.
Great video, this guy is an inspiration. Good to see he hasn't lost his passion for driving after his accident.
Such a cool video Matt. Well done. My mom is an Occupational Therapist professor and this is what it is all about. Having a disability just means you need to learn a new way of doing certain tasks but you can still rip a canyon and live a badass, or whatever kind of life, you want to live.
Make a video of Major driving Rob Parsons' car if you're able to set that up. I would love to see him get the opportunity and I know many others here would like to see it. This was a really neat episode. Quality content.
Forester XT'S are sick! Im lucky i was able to drive one!
Matt is literally the best guy in the automotive world. You can see the love he has for everyone on his show and he's just a good person in general. Would love to build a car and drive around the canyons with you man, keep up the great work
Major thank you for serving for our country, dude really awesome set up and I hope you have some other projects in the works like this. it's great to see cars bring people together like this.
If only the world was as happy as this man who has had the hardships he has endured. 👍🏻
guys let's seriously get a go fund me going for this guy. he's too damn cool to be rocking an auto, we all know he could easily do it! he's an awesome guy!
This is fucking cool. Mad respect to this guy
Best One Take yet. Mad fucking props to this guy. Clean Fozzy.
One of the best one takes. Very cool to see that not only do those hand control exists but the car culture is alive and strong with Major.
Major has great character and enthusiasm, seeing him talk about his car and the humble attitude is infectious.
I can understand why he talked about the hand controls alot, i mean hes never had one on the show and i think he figured alot of people would like to know how they work even if they are not impaired. Cool vid and cool guy
good guy matt i loved this one take. probably my favorite of all of them because foresters are badass and this guy is a badass
more interesting to watch this guy drive an auto than normal people in a manual, what a beast
Easily one of the coolest videos on here! As a vet, I am glad that you were able to find something to be able to mentally focus on that is positive. Wish you the best bro. Great job Matt being willing to entertain this.
This is awesome! So much love! I have an 04 FXT myself, and my grandfather was the on the board for the wheel chair association of Canada. He always drove with hand controls, as long as I knew him.
Thank you for your service Major Lewis! I read your comment on the video. Truly amazing. You inspire so many people everyday, keep doing what you're dojng!!
This guy is awesome, great to see someone not let circumstances get in the way of something they have a passion for. The car looks awesome and sounds sick!
Man what a cool car and a cool dude, props to you major!
because of what he has to do to drive he is paying way WAAAAY more attention to the road than most people on the road, no need to watch out for this dude hes got it!
This guy is phenomenal. I love his positive attitude and his drive to keep with it!
Manually shifting a 4EAT FTW
I find it hilarious whenever someone says automatics are boring, but then I have the 4EAT and they don't even know what is happening when I start manually shifting with it ;D Would never go for a 5MT. Maybe for 6MT, but just because it can take more HP.
A lot of people hate on the auto but honestly its better in every way. It has a different differential that gives more traction offroad, can handle a lot more power than the 5MT, and with an upgraded torque convertor can be reallly quick.
im sorry dude but i have owned both a 4eat and 5mt forester xt and i can confinently say that in pretty much any situation, the manual is better. the 4eat transmission is absolutely bulletproof and can take retarded amounts of power, but to be honest, there is nothing like having a third pedal. the fxt 4eat is probably the best auto trans i have ever driven, definitely fun to put it in 3 and mash the gas, but still i recommend you give the stick a shot. also the 5mt in early foresters is different than the wrx 5 speed and can take significantly more power. not as much as the 6 speed, but it weighs 80 pounds lighter.
I have manuals in my 4 fun cars. My DD Impreza has a 4EAT. It's fine.
I also have the 4eat. It is a great auto box, but I really wish I had found a manual tranny XT. Thought of converting mine to STI 6 speed, but chickened out when I realized how much it would cost. You really don't have enough control with an auto. Liked the video.
idk why but this guy made me happy
That Forrester looks AWESOME!
So much respect major. That forester xt is so badass. Good on you matt for making a great video showcasing this dope subie and the guy who made it happen
Nice! Respect to the owner for his passion. Being handicapped did not stop him! WHat a legend.
Thanks Matt, that was just a treat to even watch this. You're enthusiasm sure showed the level of cool factor of this whole set up. Keep up the great "unique" (modified cars are already unique, I know) content like this. I am a big fan of seeing how people have made due with what they have been given. Cheers!
This style of Forrester looks way better than the newer ones
Nothing but respect, in the true sense of the word. Awesome to see and takes boss to olympic standards. Thanks to Matt and especially to Major and family.
I met a guy here in England who has a R8 V10 plus and he had hand controls! Pretty awesome! He also had an rs6 with hand controls!
What a great guy and let's get a go fund me for the guy! Love his attitude to and drive overcome and his loss of the use of his legs! Major are the the beast! buddy! Thank you for your services! And I say we get get him a wheel chair with a little turbo and nitrous set up on it!
damn, props to this guy for putting his ride together with the challenges he has.
Glad to see him still pursuing his passion regardless of the circumstances. I had a roommate who had a car with hand controls and I would drive it occasionally if he wasn't feeling well.
This is the first one take Ive watched till the end. So awesome.
One of the best in the One Take archives. Thank you both!
Major is officially my power-animal. Dude is cool AF. Thanks for sharing, Matt!
That guy make me smile !
im so amused that you are sharing this content. Being able to share road ways with enthusiastic drivers regardless they be motorbikes, bikes, or even at this qualm self driving cars is really a feat accomplished.
Small world I saw this Forester on the freeway. I was on my way to Universal Hollywood on August 1st 2016. I remember the plate sg9sti very ku SUV. My wife and I have two subaru Forester and STI.
I used to work at a Honda shop with a customer who has hand controls and a speed knob on the steering wheel. It's actually really fun to drive. I can't imagine what a modded Subaru feels like with hand controls haha Pretty awesome
this is amazing, so glad to see he's able to still enjoy his subaru
"If you are a a compulsive masturbator and happen to lose the use of your legs, this is gonna be the perfect solution for you" Matt Farah 2016
This has been said already, but in my opinion, this is one of the coolest One Takes ever. Thanks Major, and kudos Matt. I know you're over Subarus, but maybe one day, when mine is done, you'll take it out! 😆
Fantastic vid. Major is a dead set legend (Aussie term). Love your work mate. Cheers Matt for posting up :)
I liked this video as soon as he said he shifts his auto. As a disabled person i shift my subaru autonatic like a manual for the past 10 years ive owened it.
This man Major is a monster man, i have handcontrols in my truck and i wish i could shift like him, thats so neat! Good work Matt! And stay positive Major! youre an inspiration man!!
Glad to see you have this guy here on Smoking Tire; wheelchair user here too, have hand controls in my Scatpack! Still gotta do what you love!!
I bet he gets a mean workout on track days, dang.
Respect to this guy for making the best of his situation
Gorgeous! Fantastic Job Major Lewis,Thank You and God Bless you for Sharing your Baddass Forester and for Taking a tough break w/moto accident and Building yours and My Dream Wagon! Tonacity my Freind!
This guy is bad ass and so is his car. Very nicely built.
this guy is my hero. did all the work himself which is awesome!
I love this kind of stuff it's fucking awesome
Love this video, I'm from the Caribbean, so it's impossible for my car to be featured on a One Take, but its basically the exact same as this one, except mine is an 06 and I also manually shift my automatic, its WAY faster than letting it auto shift, and have pulled the transmission and checked it, totally fine, no damage whatsoever.
so cool! Major is the man!
has to be one of the coolest one takes ever made...
awesome this is real commitment to the scene specially cuz he tracks the car thats totally awesome congrats on this sweet ride
Sick, I had the same Forrester, same color, Brembo conversion, Sti wheels etc....You just made me miss her.
Shit, this man didn't let his accident slow him down at all - major hats off to this guy!
Man who disliked this video?!!! This was a cool one-take and shoutout to the owner
if anyone gives his video of thumbs down you are not human and don't have a heart. cheers to him🍻
Matt thanks for doing the video, Major, thanks for your service Sir
Man, those wheels (BBS-type), are probably just about my favorite design of wheel. They look great on just about anything.
Back in the early 90's, I purchased a used car that had hand controls installed. They work great. I was really surprised how you can modulate the brakes/throttle with them. Mine had a twist throttle, like a motorcycle, and push for applying the brakes.
this is amazing, he deserves a manual with the controls to be able to work for him
Ah I see a man of culture. I also use my automatic as a manual in my 2.5x
Very cool one take, Major is a total badass. I love seeing someone having a disability and not giving a fuck and finding a way to make his passion continue on. Plus his subi does shoot fire, and anytime that happens it puts a smile on my face.
That owner of the Forester is the MAN!!!
Sweet ride!
One of the best sounding Subie ever.
Wow, i bow down.
A real petrol head and a strong man, the manilest man around thats for sure.
MAD respect
