I got a 93 Grand Cherokee with 8½" lift on 35s. I feel the way you do. I can't take her anywhere and not get a wave, a thumbs up, or literally run off the rd to be told how sweet my ride is. Keep her alive.
Would've had to swap a small Cummins in it. Not saying it's cheaper just my opinion. Beautiful jeep awesome build. Congratulations on the completion and getting it back to wheeling
Christian first of all bravo on saving an SJ. The early 66-72 Kaiser trucks have some beautiful design details but the later AMC/Chrysler trucks leave a lot in terms of QC. Hope to see this truck around San Diego!
They put a turbo 400 in some of those Jeeps, from the factory. Not sure if the bell housing bolt pattern would match a SBC. Just a thought. Cool build. BTW - I had a '72 Wagoneer, it caught on fire too. I rebuilt it, again.
Turbo 400 was standard behind the AMC V8 unless you got it the 4 speed. But the vast majority were automatic in the 70s. Bullet proof with basic maintenance. A lot of the issues this guy had were probably caused after this jeep left Toledo. I bought a complete 70k mile drivetrain 360-T18-D20 from a guy for $800! AMC power forever.
Wish this was broken down slower into more videos. I'm in the process of planning out a restore on my 78 Chief and could benefit from a detailed walkthrough on this. Gives me tons of ideas though!
I thought about it but I put a lot of time and effort into rebuilding this one with top quality parts. Plus it made the conversion really simple and works well with the offset Dana 44 rear. If and when it ever fails I’ll swap it out but it’s only got a few thousand miles on it.
I don't understand. I spend money for motortrend on demand to get this kind of insider look when instead, these episodes drop on UA-cam first before getting to motortrend
I was hoping that this wasn't going to be lazy and tired LS swap into an FSJ. NOPE! No Gen III Hemi, no 401 with aftermarket fuel injection, Coyote swap even. One more FSJ looses it heart and soul to a bowtie. I suppose this is motivation to get my 401 injected installed in my FSJ sooner than later.
This Marine would kil for a LS swap my 351 windsor on the old 96 bronco has 275000 miles and no way can i afford a engine swap need suspemsion upgrade too!!!! lol man must be nice to have money and friends with the know how lol
Leave. It. Stock. Seeing this lots - engine and/or entire sub frame swap with body. In 10-15 years this will be worth *less*. Rebuild it stock and it will be worth *more*. Lame.
I'm a huge Mopar fan and I kind of agree. Oh I kind of own one-ish. It's a 1987 "Chrysler" it's not on that list because it's a Conquest mitsubishi. This car is awesome. I love my 94 Lightning much more but I trade both for a 69 Dart. If I sold them I guess I could.😄
Wow why would you want to spend your $5 a month on Motrin when it just comes on UA-cam for free I would Motor Trend don't post stuff like they should they posted about every 3 months Motrin sucks
Absolutely have history with these - 1989, my buddies dad had an Orange Cherokee Cheif. Spent lots of time in that thing.
11:26 You know what... I love this work 😘😍✌🏾 It's so neat and perfect that its beauty and creativity can't be described ❤️❤️❤️🌹💐

I had a 94 GC I loved that Jeep . Got totaled in a car Wreck in a blizzard.

Sorry to hear.
Johnny is a solid dude and a great mechanic
GREAT VIDEO CHRISTIAN!!!!!! I LOVE THE UPGRADES!!!!
Looking foward to this. Nice ride. Cant wait to see it done ; )
Yes! This is what I like to see. Can't wait for the next one!

Miss mine came home in 08 to pick it up and finally fix it my grandparents not wanting to fix it had it scraped.

Shoulda just built a 401, not a fan of the LS swap. Currently rebuilding a 77 J10 Honcho. That razor grille is by far the best FSJ grille.
Have it's twin, '78 Cherokee Chief, but orange. And 40+ years of east coast rust! Prolly part it out though
I LOVE IT AND THANKS FOR SHARING!!!
That was awesome. I want this build..
GeeeWizzz another LS swap stopped watching at 3:52.
Great, been waiting on this!
Nice one! Love how wide this truck really is :)
How original, LS swapped?! No way. You guys are cutting-edge
@@dalehall2993 You don't need power in an offroad rig, you need low end torque, honestly better off with a diesel or a long stroke inline 6.
@@riogrande163
Its not a trail rig...
@@dalehall2993 In which case a 5.7 hemi or a 401 would do just fine, if one is going the LS swap route, why not buy a Blazer and save some hassle?
@@riogrande163
Lsa supercharged but an ls will do..regardless its ls powered😎👊🏻
@@riogrande163
Whats the hassle if you know what you're doing...right👀
Man, I would have totally ditched that QT case. It’s tough to rebuild, find parts for and they need it like every 60k.

And you can't pass a gas station
This Jeep Deserves a 5.7 Eagle Head HEMI
I'd really love if they put this show on the actual MotorTrend channel. Please and thank you
Super cool build. Your show and you can do what you want, but in my opinion the music is not necessary during speaking times.
Kory the Great Holmes
I cannot seem to find the other episodes of this job? Am I a moron?
Motortrend probably uploaded this one episode to youtube to advertise the series and direct people to their subscription service, MToD
Would have been sweet to see a Hemi shoved into one of these.

Keep Mopar Mopar should have been an Eagle Head 5.7 Hemi . Really easy to get 500 HP out of a 09 and new 5.7 hemi .
Wow all that for hosts with the personality of a warm bath

So why not just get the 6.0. It does not have afm.
I already had this engine
👍
4bt swap
Couldn't click on this fast enough
How can you beat up a vehicle as old as that one sounds like a bunch of poor mechanics working on it so it lasted this long you should rebuild it
Too bad you put an LS in it.😂😂
Modern fuel injection, in any form, if you want to drive it regularly, is the only way to go.
@@terencef5806 No, you can quite easily buy an EFI kit to replace a 4 barrel carb, they are readily available.
👍👍🇨🇱
Loved it up until that stupid LS word showed up. So borrowing. You can't do anything more unique than that with the budget of MT?

Why does anyone like any Chrysler product from the dark ages. (Automotive dark ages, 1973-1984)

Owned an 85 Shelby Dodge Charger. Great little car. Good gas mileage and awesome performance. Wish I hadn't sold it, but I wore it out, it was so fun.
The dark ages? Haven't heard that before.
This isn't a Chrysler product, it's an AMC product.
