This is a throwback. I had an XJ back then, I had paid 4 wheel parts to put on a 3” lift. About 6 months later I wanted more. I remember watching this and thinking “I can do that”. I quickly ordered a 6” Rustys off road lift and spent a Friday night into Saturday morning upgrading my Cherokee with the help of my baby brother and my dads tool box. 20 years later dad still complains that i lost some his tools that night

@@farmsgrace341 No kidding. Maybe there is some shangri-la of usable Wagoneer's available for under $10K, but I ain't seen it since about 1987. I could sell that one for at least $15-20K without working at all.

Kids today won't understand. Very early 2000's, no youtube, no streaming, long before "powerblock" decided they were an influencer and became power nation with near zero ratings you had 2 hours every sat and sun morning on speedtv with Danica Patrick trying to host. You also used to be able to buy cars like this for 500-1500 dollars and restore for under 2k.
My girlfriends son in Montana sells parts for these things , you wont believe what he sells the parts for these things for. Theres no LMC truck for a Jeep Wagoneer or J series truck so your stuck with old stuff to recondition, Rust is the biggest issue, you can drop any drivetrain in but the body is the body, rust free sheet metal is hard to find , Restored laler editions Grand Wagoneers fetch 30 40 even 50 grand from places like Wagonmasters in Texas, these are not entry level rigs My girlfriends son has this same vehicle a Golden Eagle same color with a 389 Pontiac V-8 and a turbo 400, its pretty nice.
montanaoverland.com/ This is Chad Parsons and his dad George, they have ANYTHING you need for this vehicle but they arent cheap . They sell parts all over the world, even complete body shells and beds, they have at least 300 Wagoneers and trucks
Best looking grilles for that series of truck was the wide horizontal grille but with round lights found on 1972-80 models. Had a '78 J-10 short bed Golden Eagle for a while. Classy looking truck.
Here in the UK I have an 83 Cherokee (Laredo) WT. Inhereted from a friend who passed away. Literally "one of a kind" as it is the only FSJ, of that year still registered with DVLA (UK DMV). Also Uber rare as it is properly converted to RHD, instead of the chain drive conversion almost all the UK FSJ's had. Aluminum bumpers, not the nasty chrome plated steel bumpers. Sitting on my driveway, waiting for a body shop to be brave enough to take it on (and the lottery win to be able to pay for the work!).
I remember when off roader's magazine did an article like this about 18 years ago and they listed 10 vehicles that were cheap but had great 4x4 potential. I bought one of the suggested vehicles and even though new/newer vehicles have more creature comforts, I still prefer my 29 year old tank. Like the comments have said, no way in hell you are getting these vehicles cheap anymore.
The old Wagoners and J series were beasts with the 360 in em, sadly their hard to find and fuel mileage wasn't so kind although a 30 gallon fuel tank can solve that
We have a grand wagoneer. We removed the engine and slipped in a 331hemi. Gm 700r4 and Gm transfer case. Hodge podge configuration but it works. Rebuilt the axles. 31 spline and 355 gears. Gas mileage went to 24mpg at 70mph with the a/c on. Beats the heck out of 10mpg.
Just stumbled upon this episode. How times have changed in the last 20 years. $1500 for the entire truck. In 2022 (if you can still even find one of these things) you can’t even get a rusted out non-roller for under $3k 😅
I have not seen one in that condition for $1500 for a looong time. That is easily a $5000+ Jeep. The first gen Grands (ZJ) though are still plentiful and are the value king for solid axle Jeeps.
$1500.. lol... I know this was originally filmed some time ago, but I find that hard to believe in that condition. Hell, as of this morning, a quick search found listings for Grand Wagoneers from about $6K to $60K.
Way too late to get these cheap. Old SUVs are suddenly the "In" thing. I just saw a basic 79 Scout for over $15K. Landcruisers, Broncos, Blazers - same thing.

aren't vintage vehicles (over 35 yrs) smog exempt in CA? that was the law when I lived there. but that was over a decade ago. different world, different time.
@@farmsgrace341 CA as in California is what I assume he meant not Canada and if so I can say as a guy that has lived in California his whole life I can tell you 100% that 1976nd newer vehicles are smogged here. So called "conservative" (AKA RINO) Arnold Schwarzenegger signed in a bill to stop the rolling 30 year smog exemption because he was afraid of global warming or some liberal crap fest that somehow a collector car effects in a large way. (The hypocrisy wasn't lost on me as meanwhile the guy has private airplanes a daily drives giant vehicles like Hummer h1's and yet a car collector is causing the emission problems). So yes in short California has stringent smog laws smogging cars that are now 45 model years old. They go on a dyno for smog and their fuel system is pressurized to check for vapor leaks and underneath the hood all the stock emission crap has to be there and in working order regardless if there something better like for example fuel injection. The only exemptions or if it has a "CARB EO" number (California air resource board exemption order) that cost a ton for a manufacturer to get on their aftermarket part for a small market but I digress. The other way around it is a smog "referee" that is state certified that can issue (after approximately a 2 year waiting period sometimes longer) a exemption for a car that has a later year drive train swapped into it which includes all smog stuff. So for example if you want to LS swap an old 79 malibu you would need the entire donor vehicle for not only its engine but computer, fuel system, catalytic converters exc... There has been a push recently to get the smog law moved up to 1983 but it has stalled out and are liberal controlled state legislature. I really need to move out of this hostile state for more then this reason but I digress.
Fast forward to 2020. The best bang for the buck would be a Excursion V-10 4x4. One heck of a rid under 10k. I'm looking for a fully loaded Eddie Bower to load full of kids and gear and pull just about anything. I can live with 10-14 mpg.just think of it as fun per gallon. I would love to watch Stacey do a show on a Excursion.
My dads old friend (rip leon) had a 73 j4000 with a 360 & 4spd man was that ol truck a tough beast...it wasnt fast but would off road with ease like a cadillac on a brand new road.
That's a American racing atlas chrome plated aluminum wheel on the Firestone destination tire at the end of video,i know because I had a set of them on my old 86 chevy k20 custom deluxe long bed well used beat to hell 4x4 farm truck and it had kuhmo road venture mt kl71 tires I had that truck 12 and half years..
What a FANTASTIC Transformation. I'm going to guess that the Hardest Part, Would be to Find a Smokin-Good-Deal on a Jeep of That Year (Give or take a few years) For the Right Price & Hope it's not All Beat to Heck. WOW. NICE. I Want This Now.
First thought when i saw those old leaf springs was lets make some blades. Old leaf spring steel especially american or german produced makes the best blades IMHO. Really enjoyed the video, as i love older cars and trucks. Take care and God bless one and all.
I liked my '76 stainless one-piece grille, but those Kaiser fronts are pretty nice. Thing's still got a quadratrac, though - even twenty years ago, I would have been wary of keeping that. Never know if it got decent maintenance.
How 'bout my '04 WJ for$500? Needed a timing cover gasket, and I replaced the water pump since I already had it off. It's my first JEEP. I'm diggin' it!
My dad bought one of those brand new, same year, but 4 doors. Had it for about 8 years. My brother learned to drive with it, but I didn't. That thing was rusty as hell by then, all beat up, and a huge gas guzzler.
Never met-aphor that I didn't like. She's a poem written in the most beautiful body language for sure. & current Gas prices just makes her even that more affordable.
One thing i wouldve done that wouldve been "custom" would been to put the gladiator grill in but use part of old grill around the headlights and make it more unique.
Yeah, if you can find an SJ that doesn't have holes rusted through the entire body. Near impossible in my area. You can get a TJ/YJ for about 7k at about 100k miles. Only downside is that it's not a v8 but the 4.0 is still a beast especially in the small package of the TJ/YJ. Edit: didn't realise this was 20 years old.
SJ was a good choice 10 years ago but the price has risen significantly in that time. I’d say the best value off-roader right now would be the Grand Cherokee ZJ. Coil suspension, solid axles, and available V8
Absolutely possible 20 years ago. Especially before cash for clunkers, when you could still buy a reliable beater for a few hundred dollars. I bought a '78 Cherokee Chief in 1997 for $500. Today? not even close. 😞
1987-88 I was living in a northern Kansas City Missouri suburb and a guy in his 20s was moving to Kansas City area. Saw him driving around town with a for sale sign in the window 1971 Kaiser/ Willy's 4 door green metallic Wagoneer asking price $1500 ,he said he only felt right about selling me his grandfather's pride and joy after paying a local garage of my choice to adjust the breaks , wheel alignment, oil change and Missouri vehicle inspection. FINAL PRICE I PAID $1250....We drove it 8 years, all I did was maintenance and replaced a stock rear leaf spring and fluid change. 1992 ish same small north Missouri area bought the 1978 Jeep / Chrysler jeep Cherokee in all original shape for $ 1500 ( torn front seat ) originally asking $ 1750 ... 360 dodge V-8, 350 turbo, Dana 44 s drove it 5 years including (350 mile round trips) twice. Eventually Quadra track went out sold for $1000
Springs... Since 2010 everything I lift goes straight to longest arm coil suspension 😊. Go back in time when he talked about RADIALS, since bias were just going out of style 😃.
Is there something cool and/or attractive about throwing old parts on the ground, especially parts that could be repurposed like the headlight that he supposedly breaks?
Ram or Ford heavy duties with solid front axle 4x4's for all your affordable off road needs up here where i live..not many of those full size jeep's in my area. Finding a worthy one is hard to impossible. But the trucks i mention, are as ubiquitous as Tim Horton's ;-)
I am fully customizing a 1982 Wagoneer from the ground up and there is nothing cheap about it!! J E E P, Just Empty Every Pocket. Started in 2019, should be done in 2080 lol. It will be worth it in the end. Replacing every nut bolt bushing gasket and part takes MONEY! and lots of the stuff. The door gasket set was 709.95 alone! I always liked the way Stacy just threw the old parts off to the side like, don't need that POS anymore.
I'm already @6:30 into the vid, and he has yet to mention that the automatic locking hubs should be replaced with manual hubs....why would anyone want their front end turnin when it doesn't need to? Less wear and tear is always a good thing.... #CoyotePoweredCj7
Stacey David is the best ever. He tends to operate within a working man's budget. He realized that most of us can't afford to put 900 hp under the hood. He's a "lockers before light bars" kind of guy.
Fullsize Montero's not the sport, are pretty cheap to get and fix "Rock Auto/Ebay/RockyRoad not a V8 but did come with lockers. and torsen bar suspension I did have a grand wagoneer and did the ignition upgrade from the ford and it was getting a solid 14MPG after that.
I see people say $1500 is way too cheap or a lie. These gems are out there, you just gotta go look for them. I buy nice vehicles all the time dirt cheap. You'd be amazed atwhat I paid for 2 rust free cars that I drove home. A Grand Prix & Jetta Turbo. Paid less than the guy did for this jeep for both. Thats how many of us make a living with these cars. ✌
I would prefer getting some lesser old vehicle which ever vehicle it might be (I'm not comparing with any vehicle here in the video, just a general opinion over all). It is less of a hassle maintaining and is more reliable.
looks like somebody took reasonable care of this Jeep. a nice sky cam in this this will give much more power and better fuel economy. not much body damaged.
What would a reasonable price be for a 79 Cherokee Golden Eagle that has recently had $27K worth of work on the mechanical and electrical side, incuding a rebuilt AMC 360, but just has decent paint with patina and needs reapolstering and headliner? Is $10K too much?
My $1500 truck is a 2000 dodge ram laramie slt quad cab long bed 1500 4x4 with the 5.2 litre 318 magnum V8 46 RE AT transmission manual shift transfer case lever on the floor.
Ridiculous how even just seeing surface rust makes so many southern folks think whatever the vehicle is,,,, that it a complete pos,,, and walk away,,, and the same vehicle someone from the north would be absolutely totally drooling over cause of how nice a shape/condition it is
Those are not easy to find. Yes I know you are just trying to save some. Very plentiful when I was younger. Now what about the new ones possibly with the V8 or whatever is best. They to share body for quit a long time
I have a 96 Eddie Bauer Bronco 351 Windsor I've done some work to it but would love to see one in your shop watch you tear it down and rebuild when I'm done with my Bronco I will send pictures
I am 16 and my dad just gave me his old jeep cherokee. I got 50 dollars for my 16th birthday and am going to Walmart to get tools to do this, should I get a combination of flat-head and phillips to do this upgrade?
I remember my friend's Wagoneer. Too many moving parts. If you need all that extra gear why not just stay in the city like so many wanna-bes? My best pick would be a '55 Dodge Powerwagon with armstrong steering and waaay too much power but in a 15% hill it will be first at the top. Keep on truckin.'

I got a running and stopping mostly rust-free roller for $2200 here in 2023. Downside being that it was fully disassembled with no doors or interior 😅
SJ was a good choice 10 years ago but the price has risen significantly in that time. I’d say the best value off-roader right now would be the Grand Cherokee ZJ. Coil suspension, solid axles, and available V8
Or xj, better trans and maybe cheaper to lift
Connor Ashburn the price on them is starting to come up.
No way he got it for 1500 even at the time this was filmed.
you cant even get a proper bj for 1500
20 years ago??? Yes you could. Those were everywhere for almost nothing. Before Obama crushed them all
Absolutely possible 20 years ago.
Eventually Quadra track went out sold for $1000
I would think just because of who he is, will probably get a better deal than you or I.
That Jeep SJ is awesome.
Can't even touch that for that price in today's world
I'm already @6:30 into the vid, and he has yet to mention that the automatic locking hubs should be replaced with manual hubs....why would anyone want their front end turnin when it doesn't need to? Less wear and tear is always a good thing.... #CoyotePoweredCj7
I had a 1978 Cherokee Chief, great vehicle other than the rust⚡️
✌
I have owned a 1971 Kaiser Wagoneer, and a 1978 Cherokee
I got a Full size 1980 bronco for 1200.00, ran and drove home. I is a great driving and running, not rust.
The cross member was broken on all of them, I had a Jeep 3/4 ton pickup I had to build a new cross member for it.
I would prefer getting some lesser old vehicle which ever vehicle it might be (I'm not comparing with any vehicle here in the video, just a general opinion over all). It is less of a hassle maintaining and is more reliable.
I would just put aftermarket round led offroad lights in place of the factory cover plates
Fantastic job, very good Jeep suitable for long and city drive
looks like somebody took reasonable care of this Jeep. a nice sky cam in this this will give much more power and better fuel economy. not much body damaged.
What would a reasonable price be for a 79 Cherokee Golden Eagle that has recently had $27K worth of work on the mechanical and electrical side, incuding a rebuilt AMC 360, but just has decent paint with patina and needs reapolstering and headliner? Is $10K too much?
What about drive shafts? 6” lift and stock works? What about axle shims/pitch, 6” lift and they function?
only bad thing was you never said the driveshafts will be cutting it close and mite be to short and fall out now ?
This is worth 15 grand now
Why not put the yellow, amber, running lights in instead oh delete plates?
My $1500 truck is a 2000 dodge ram laramie slt quad cab long bed 1500 4x4 with the 5.2 litre 318 magnum V8 46 RE AT transmission manual shift transfer case lever on the floor.
Ok I’m a sucker for the two door wagoner.
All good but the trim in the front. I'd have added aux lights.
Not cheap anymore. I think everyone watched this and realized how cool these trucks were/are.
You can't get one for $10k now.. Jeez
If you're lucky 😜!
Ridiculous how even just seeing surface rust makes so many southern folks think whatever the vehicle is,,,, that it a complete pos,,, and walk away,,, and the same vehicle someone from the north would be absolutely totally drooling over cause of how nice a shape/condition it is
This didn't age well. These things are crazy expensive now
Yup, because folks went out and beat all the ones they could find to death or cut the axles out from under them for little jeeps.
These haven't been cheap for over half a decade now
Those are not easy to find. Yes I know you are just trying to save some. Very plentiful when I was younger. Now what about the new ones possibly with the V8 or whatever is best. They to share body for quit a long time
other UA-camrs: these old parts I took of my car are for a giveaway.
G&G: Say hello to my little hammer!
Lol now one of the most expensive old jeeps.
Jeep Liberty's are capable vehicles with no resale value. They would be a great vehicle for modification on a budget..
Agreed. Great for towing too. The tight turning radius makes backing a breeze.
What you have there is a Duxbury Cadillac model Coupe DeVille
a jeep of that vintage in that condition with that body and paint is going to be atleast 10k, not exactly a budget truck
True but if you got that for 10k its now worth 20k with those mods done, front grille alone would bring it to 15k.
@@Cutlass_Rudd indeed, i was just speaking of the original "budget" truck unmodified
@@shonuffisthemaster This was fimed 16 years ago. But, yes even then it would be difficult to find one for under 4,000
Links to purchase? Lol. Enjoyed this video. ❤
Dood that partidge family hair is awesome
