Solo has so much common sense.
Ive noticed that many farmers and homesteaders keep a couple of donkeys on the property but I just learned why today. It's because they will ward off predators, like coyotes and wolves and are very protective of the animal residents.
I learned that too this week!
Yes! Donkeys will kill coyotes.. They are very good at keeping them away..
I watch many farmers and I don’t think I’ve ever seen just one livestock dog. Usually multiple dogs, donkeys and even ostriches.

Careful with donkeys living with other farm animals. Donkeys can get aggressive and they are strong! They can kill any animals that are smaller than they are, like dogs, goats and sheep. You've got to make sure they have enough space and an escape route incase of aggression. I've only ever seen donkeys in their own pen and rarely with the other livestock.
Keep the house for guests and for kids who will use it as a stepping stone to purchasing their own home.

An intercom system will come in handy rather than cell phones, especially when not every kid has on. Carpet is not for high traffic areas and absolutely not in bathrooms. The new house will be like a vacation😊 Love you guys!

My family of four lived in one bedroom for over a year while our house was being built. The sacrifice and struggle was definitely hard at times but it was so worth it!! Moving into 2,000 sq feet after that felt like a mansion😂
You should take some of those pictures from your phones and turn them into artwork for the new house. So pretty.

Yes you need another live stock dog... They work in pairs way more effective and keeps them safer... Also donkeys are amazing live stock protection... And if ever you buy ponys/horses for the kids reach out to me... I have 47 years of equine under my belt and would love to help out!!!😊😊😊

Sarah our family has been praying so hard for God to open the door for us to meet your family! We are desperately wanting to leave our state (WA). We want to move to a state that fits our lifestyle and personal beliefs better and that offers jobs in my husband’s line of work and is a nice state for homeschool. I am so tired of mountains and want to be somewhere that the sky goes for miles (I’m literally the only one in my family that has ever uttered those words 😂) Nebraska checks the boxes! I was watching one of your cow videos a while back where Solo was also discussing finances, I turned to my husband and said “we need to move there! They need our skills and we need theirs!” He didn’t laugh it off he actually said “wouldn’t that be awesome!” He started looking for job openings 😂.

I went from 2700 square feet 4 bedroom to a 200 square foot hotel with 4 kids and 5 dogs (3 are puppies). For 7 weeks while house is getting ready. We are not fighting yet 😂 it’s coming because the kids are fed up
Wow, you are a rock star! There is no way I could do that. A couple of days with three other people in a hotel room is challenging to me😂😂

Just wanted to say I love how you both speak. You’re so positive and optimistic and very respectful towards each other and it’s so sweet to see. Love following your family’s adventures!
I think you should maintain ownership of the small house, since it is so close to your new build. Rent it out, or keep it as a guest house, or a "getaway" for you and Solo, or whatever, but keeping it seems like the best option. Otherwise, if you sell it, even to a friend or family member, you'll no longer have control over who the new owners might later sell it to. I like the family compound idea.
Good thinking! You never know what other people will do, as far as selling the house.
If you have a septic tank. You might want to check it. Just in case it is getting full. With the size being for fewer people in your house. Hopefully you will be in your new house before the end of the year.
Your entire family has such love for each other. What a great example of God’s love!
I have 9 people in my 1100 Square foot home, 6 of them are children 15 and under, my husband, me and my 82 year old mother in law!
We have 14 people in our house originally 1500 but now we built an addition and have 2000 sqft. It just works!
Sarah and Solo - we aren’t a large family, but we did do a downsize for us - 2800 to 1300 square feet for a family of 5.
We are now moving into a new home (well, new to us) of 2500 square feet and it feels enormous!

What they say with fruit trees is the best time to plant them is a year ago, the second best time is today. The sooner they're in the sooner you'll get to a point where they're producing food. Good luck with everything! )
I love watching you both and your whole family. Im #9 of 13 children all from the same parents. We lived on a farm. Horses, cows, pigs, goats, sheep,geese, chickens, ducks, guineas, rabbits, and always lots of dogs and cats outdoors. Our parents saìd go outside and dont come in until the dinnerbell rings. Which was a big cast iron bell Dad had mounted on a post outside. We all were close growing up. Living in the country was some of the best memories of my life. As adults some of us have remained close.

I recently heard that donkeys and llamas are good for keeping coyotes away from livestock. Have you looked into that?

My husband and I moved from a city environment to a totally off grid rural environment and both of us love it! We are running a guest house but have our own homestead about 10km from the main house. We've both noticed how our habits have changed and its fantastic. We 'inherited ' chickens, a cat and and a dog. I'm learning so much from you with regards to bread making, canning, etc
hey Sarah and Solo, you probably know this but if you plant anything including fruit trees put wire cages around them to protect the deer's from eating the leaves, fruit etc. Just a thought.

You and Solo could use the small house for your businesses. Sarah, you could use the small house kitchen to do cooking videos on canning, and making bread. It would be an awesome place to host company.
You're right about the sunsets and sunrises I live in Lincoln. Prayers all goes smoothly and faster than expected. Also prayers for little sweet Peace.
You could turn it into an Airbnb and then when company comes and wants to stay awhile they could stay in there.
I love your family! How is little Peace? I would get another Great Pyrenees and a couple of donkeys. They all need partners and not be pets. These are working dogs not pets. They will defend your family and livestock. Donkeys will help take care of those coyotes. They will also defend all of you. I can't wait until everyone is back home. You are all doing so well.

We are one of those larger families in a smaller house. We are a family of 13 in just under 1400 sqft. I understand filming in small spaces. Haha! It is not always easy to work at home, but like you, we make it work. We also look forward to building a bigger house, but God is so good and supplies everything in his timing. Happy Easter! Yes we have 14 children 12 still at home and baby on the way. We are just under 2000 it just works. Great outlook I think similarly.
Multiple livestock guardian animals would be the way to go! One dog can be overwhelmed and killed by a pack of coyotes!!! As you said, coyotes are smart. They very quickly learn how many animals they will have to deal with and attack accordingly.

My house had the same cabinets and I used a heat gun on them, it pops the whole plastic coating right off, I lightly sanded, primed and painted and they look brand new. I've had them finished for over 2 years and they still look great!!
I've researched doing the very same thing to my cabinets. Mine aren't in terrible shape yet but they are starting to let go on some of the sides. Glad to hear that yours have lasted well.

You might want to see how Kramer Life does their chicken houses. I really love the idea of using a greenhouse frame with hardware cloth to create safe runs for chickens.
We moved to the country going to be 2 years ago on April 9th. We are only 2.5 miles from town though. It is true that gravel is hard on vehicles but we do live in a small community so it isn't just leaving our home it is many places we go. More gravel. We even go to a country church that is 1/2 mile down a gravel road. My SUV is pretty much always dirty. It is a way of life, I think. Our closest city is 1 hour and 15 minutes away and we are totally happy with that.

Just a thought... I realize the underground fence will help keep Gabriel in ... but how will it work when he is doing his job and chases a predator out. My oldest dog can no longer hear and has cataracts. We put a GPS tracker on her collar so we are notified if she leaves (rarely) our yard and shows us (via our phone) where she is located. Provides great peace of mind. Looking forward to watching you grow your homestead and building your new home. Many Blessings!!
We actually have a tracker on him too. And we only put the fence over the driveway where he goes to the neighbors continually. The rest of the property he could leave even though he does not realize it. 😜

Once you start milking it will be more work especially in the winter. If the animals get out you may have m to chase them all hours of the day and night in all kinds of weather. Fencing and feed is expensive.
I pay for healthy farm raised organic food without the work. I have a bakery that sells delicious home baked bread - no starter on my counter.
I did live in the country with animals as a child and I raised my children in the country.
While we enjoyed the life there’s many conveniences of living in town.
The children are old enough to take turns doing chores.
Getting to town in a snowstorm can be dangerous.
The logistics of mowing, tree trimming, and such is enormous.
And that’s still without having a garden which if you do will be even more work including canning.
Tomato plants are easy and great to have.
It’s clearly a way of life mindset that you need to have.
I too have lived in both and will absolutely take country life. I think everyone has their own experiences and opinions…but then that’s what makes the world so lovely. The weather where I’m from is very nice most of the year so that likely plays a huge role in it
It will be interesting to see the house plans. The projects for the small house would be easier when your in the other house.

We lived in a basement for 4 years while the rest of the house was being finished - using a foil roasting pan to wash dishes.
Many people live in far worse conditions.
1700 sq feet is a mansion to many people.
They have acknowledged that. It is still crowded with 13 people, especially growing teenagers.
@@sherrybendall5817everyone is different and has different financial circumstances. Personally we have 14 children 12 and counting still at home in under 2000 sq ft. I have many friends with big families in smaller spaces. It can work and work well. It really just depends on being content in what the Lord provides you in that season.

I agree, they aren't skittish and will stand their ground against predators. They are also herd animals and will herd with cows so can get just one.
Yep they are more scared of the donkey’s than my LGD dogs 😂
Dehydrate or freeze dry your eggs...use for cooking and make ahead breakfast casseroles to bake for breakfast. Sell some eggs make freezer meals or egg bites

get mud grip tires or all weather tires. I have lived in the country for over 30 yrs and I am still amazed at the sun rises and sun sets. It doesn't seem like you've been in that house for a year. I'm sure it does for you.

I wouldn't. It could be used better as a quiet office space for Solo and Sarah which they could definitely use, or, like Solo said, rent it to a farm helper. At the rate they're growing their animal/farm care, they'll need someone within a year.
You need to start gardening and preserving your home grown food. You will learn as you go what thing you need to change for good harvests. You’ll have critters that willl eat your,garden and you just have to feel your way thru what you have to do to make it work. Garden food and preserving is what I love doing.

Beautiful sit down video I knew solo was going to ask about showing the plans lol from your first vedio to now you've changed and opened up alot Sarah 😅 remember when we didn't know the lay out of your home now we know almost everything but you are covered under the blood of Jesus and no evil shall befall your family so fear not in Jesus name! About the smaller house what about doing air bnb and marketing it as a homesteading experience vacation 😊 I'm sure there's a niche market that you can tap into. Maybe ppl that are curious about starting this type of lifestyle and you'd get to teach them what you've learned while getting a hand I'm sure the blessing will be on both ends❤😊
When you live in the country you need to change your vehicle air filters more often, both engine and cabin.
We moved to the country in IL. We had a lot of coyotes on our land!
We have a pond and it froze over the year we moved in. Coyotes chased a deer on to the froze pond and killed it. We woke up to a grusome sight!
It was a blessing though because my husband put a driveway/ movement alarm and pointed at the deer. Then he didn't have to sit and watch for hours. When the alarm went off in the night he would go take care of the coyotes. We have a lot less coyotes now.
Wow....I guess that is the only way to get rid of them! Great story!
GET the PetSafe system for the dog! Don't go to the expense of a buried system. It's so awesome and so easy. And you can expand territory by adding and you can take it with you if you move. Or if you take the dog with camping, etc. I don't know why anyone would do an underground system wtih this available.
You could use that house for aging parents in the future.
I feel you on large families being SO hard on smaller houses! I feel like I can't fix things as fast as my kids destroy them a lot of the time. 😅

Where you plan to put your garden in put down black plastic to kill off weeds and grass it can stay like that all season or more then when you are ready lift the plastic till the soil then put in cover crops till you are ready to to do your garden.. it will feed the soil while you are doing other stuff

A donkey would help with the coyotes but i would keep it with the cows. And a few more livestock dogs would also help.
The work has yet to come lol Two cows to be milked, here it's 4am and 4pm and they have to be milked. No missing it at all! Will you hand milk or use an electric pump which needs to be sterilised after every use.

I was watching another UA-cam video and they said the donkeys there helped keep coyotes away. I thought of y’all!
Cattle are easy, you feed them, shots, make sure they have water, and pellets and treats. They are great, I use to have a black Angus bull I named Peaches. He could s.ell peaches and we we t hunting in the pasture where peaches was and he tried to climb in the truck where my mother was. She freaked out and luckily she didn't shoot him. He got the peach and backed out of the truck lol

I know you’re all excited. I’m so happy for you. I wanted to tell you both if you get a chance go watch Less Junk More Journey. Their last two videos they are in Africa/Kenya etc doing Mission work and it’s been such an amazing time. Learning and watching their emotions. They have been able to stay in some nice accommodations but also other places. I instantly thought of your family.

The work with the cow doesn’t start until they calve and you have to wake up 5:00 am to go milk them 😂😂
