1st discover Ken thru this video back in the Summer of 2020. I was doing research for Philly Cheese Steaks places to eat at. I can't wait till the world is normal again and we can all travel and relax when in different cities. I want to go to Philly and check these places for a sandwich. While I can't travel, I became a regular viewer of Ken's present and past food reviews and travels!
One of my friends/co worker did that in Philly and the lady went off on him! She said papi you're in Philly you don't need to say Philly Cheese steak!😄 Were from Texas by the way
I went here during the philly auto show a few years ago, places was packed. The line for dinics all the way around and the People I was with didn’t wanna wait
A proper Philly cheesesteak is not made from ground beef it's thin sliced steak as for toppings you choose theirs no wrong way to make a Philly cheese steak
yet so many people from philly choose the places with the ground (chopped) beef style... I have seen many people from philly who like that better. Seems odd to me as well. Maybe it actually tastes good? I am from Cali where if you order a cheesesteak it is always ground beef... ewww no thanks
Cheesesteaks are typically chopped. I like mine with onions, sharp provolone and hot peppers. If I'm in the mood....sauce of the side. And also I like to have mine with birch beer. Yummy
This guy is cool and down to earth....he's genuinely learning about cheese steaks on the fly, no knock on him! Obviously there is no "ground beef" in these steaks, but again, he is just learning. I prefer white American on my cheese steaks and I like the meat finely chopped with the cheese blended in. Toss up between Jim's and Dalessandro's. I gotta try a roast pork sandwich at John's Roast Pork, I hear they are better than any cheese steak out there.
We don't call it ground beef...ground beef is hamburger. that was rib eye shaved thin and chopped up on the grill. that is the type of beef im used to..not the shaved slices.
@Fabian Albiar No. Ground beef is...well you guessed it GROUND. It's also almost never made from higher end cuts like ribeye. You need to do some learning.
@ff eater Uh... there is an enormous market on UA-cam where people watch food that they've already eaten. You dumb? McDonalds mukbangs with millions of views, you really think those millions of people haven't had a Big Mac in their lives?
I have been to two out of the three several times over, so i can rate it :). It clearly was directed at those that have tried any of the above places before lol.
melvin hamilton you don’t even need to say cheesesteak really...just steak is fine because you’re gonna tell them what kind of cheese you want (or they’re gonna ask). 😀
Provolone is the way to go on cheesesteaks. One thing also is that there are tons of mom & pop stores that make outstanding cheesesteaks. my all time favorite is in the suburb of Brookhaven. Everyone has their favorite little place
I am a Philly Cheese Steak NUT! I used to go around looking for the best one, especially when I was living in Charleston, WV. I went to this pizza place where they had a neon sign in the window that said "Philly Cheese Steak". So I went in and told them I was looking for the best PCS in Charleston. To my surprise the girl behind the counter said, "You won't find it here." I was stunned but ordered it anyway and she was right. The cook came out when he learned of my objective and told me that the best PCS in Charleston was at the Women's and Children's Hospital. SO, I went over there one day and they had a decent PCS sandwich. Over the years I decided to try and make one myself and after trial and error I finally produced a PCS sandwich that 'took me to Philly'. I will continue to seek out the best anytime I travel and PCS sammies are on the menu, but I am so happy I know I can produce one that fits the bill.
I've lived in Philly my whole life...never did hot peppers....but after watching you try it, I think I will as well. Normally I always get provolone ANDDD American cheese lol. I always get fried onions....along woth mayo black pepper and ketchup...sometimes sauteed mushrooms, but as I read another comment...you cant go wrong with toppings...as long as youve got your favorite cheese. I would indeed drink a pepsi ONLY with my cheesesteak lol or water. So your question about why was Jim's ground up and Tony's sliced. Many places do their steaks steaks differently. Some places will take the slices of steak and chop them up SUPER fine...but yet still chunky, and others will keep the sliced. (You can also order chicken cheesesteaks which are just as good) Thanks for coming into our town and reviewing three great known places!! Watching this video has put me in a cheesesteak mood...I'll be getting on for lunch tomorrow lol. After this video I have now become a subscriber....great review Ken!!!
@Nonya Biznes What exactly makes all great countries white? Your racism is showing because last time I checked the U.S is multi-racial and was built off the backs of POC, and the same can be said for many of these supposed white countries. Colonization and slavery aren't just a part of history books for no reason.
Always go with root or birch beer, cheese(always go with both), I prefer chopped finely and larger onions, and lastly add sweet peppers it will increase the flavor profile of the sandwich
You cannot make a logical comparison when you have different cheeses on different sandwiches at different places. It has to be made the same at all places.
Nice little video! Ok, you asked, so, here you go. First of all, it is a cheesesteak - period. Do they call french fries, french fries in France - NO (they call them frites - not french frites)! Second of all, it is chopped rib eye - period. Thirdly, the cheese is provolone, but you should always get “extra” provolone. When made properly, the meat is cooked on the grill with the provolone, so it all melts together. Fourth is the bread - Amoroso’s rolls - period. Fifth is the toppings - always get the peppers and onions on the side. Most places do not spread them out properly, so you get a bite with too much, then a bite with none. My favorite cheesesteak is across the river in Maple Shade, NJ - Yellow Submarine - which was featured in “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” HGTV episode, and was presented by Aaron McCargo (the fourth season winner of “The Next Food Network Star”), a native South Jerseyan, and professional Chef, who has spent a great deal of time in Philadelphia - I think he knows what he is talkin’ about. Next time you come to Philly, bring along a local with you to explain a few things. For instance, a lot of people like to use ketchup on their cheesesteaks, and others think it is sacrilege. You should have tried a single bite of each with a little ketchup to decide for yourself. Thanks for not doing the Pat’s/Geno thing - as so many have said - tourist traps - but also, the employees there seem to go out of their way to be rude, which does not enhance the image of our beloved city (Geno’s actually put up a sign about 15 years ago that stated that customers had to order in English - THIS, in a neighborhood built by immigrants (nerve, gall, Chutzpah, audacity). Oh, yea - you asked about what to drink with a Cheesesteak - beer. For a true experience, drink beer, and I say this because everyone I know drinks beer with their cheesesteak. I don’t like beer, so I don’t - but EVERYONE else does. I hope you enjoyed your time in this AWESOME city, and that you will return to see some more of it (BTW, I really liked your detour to Independence Hall and The Liberty Bell). Keep wandering.......
Broooo your killing me with this “ground beef” comment, its shaved steak just like tony lukes but chopped up. Ground beef in a hotdog is a called a “looseburger” in detroit. “Ground beef” smh (slaps self in face). But i cant hate you did ask about it sooo, its chopped steak my guy.
@Fabian Albiar It's not ground in the sense of hamburger, though. Usually they'll put a big pile of the thinly shaved steak on the grill to cook in bulk. Then they chop at it with that spatula thing to speed the process up and have it cook more evenly. It ends up in tiny pieces but not like "ground."
That wasn't even busy for Dalesandro's. You caught it at a good time. Go on the weekend and you can barely move in there and sometimes have to wait outside after placing your order because it's so packed. Also most cheesesteaks are shaved ribeye. Some places use sirloin. I'm glad you enjoyed them
@@phillyant58 how do you save a cheese steak though? Should it not be eaten fresh when its hot? It wouldnt be as nice with stale bread later on? Pity we dont have these culinary delights here in Ireland.
@@dublinsfaircity Well if I do save any of it I just wrap it back up and put it in the refrigerator. Is it as good as it was when it was fresh. No, but it's still pretty good. What I'll do is sometimes when I reheat it I'll pop it in the oven as opposed to the microwave. That is the best way to get it as close to what you had the previous day. Usually I don't have to worry about that because it's usually too good to just eat half.
@@phillyant58 yea man fresh is best i guess. And i agree the oven be better than the microwave. Bread doesn't do well in the microwave. Damn i'd love to eat a cheese steak. Out of the three on this video i liked the skill of the first guy the way he put the steak on the bread was class. So tasty looking 😀
I know I'm commenting late, but hats off to you for trying three great cheesesteaks with some variety between them. The 'sauce' they gave you at Dalessandro's is very much traditional in the Lehigh Valley (Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton), about 60 miles north of Philadelphia. Next time you get to Philly, I urge you to try a roast pork sandwich, best served with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe or spinach, but you do you. Four great places: John's Roast Pork, DiNic's, Tony Luke's and Cosmi's. I love a cheesesteak, but I think I like the roast pork sandwich even better. All the best to you!
Both Geno's and Pats serve a great sandwich. It's a "local" thing to say they're not good because tourists go there. They use the same meat, cheese, and rolls as everyone else. They just happen to be older than most and got the notoriety sooner. For 30 years people have been saying to avoid them, well they're still open despite everyone know they're "just tourist traps". That said, Steve's Prince of Steaks, Jim's, and Dalessandro's are my top 3 in that order.
@@kpmariner1998 @Ian Stevenson it's literally the same ingredients lol. I know who delivers the meat 🤦♂️. Everyone knows where the bread comes from(90 percent of steak shops in the city use the same place). The cheese is clearly not a secret. It comes down to prep and handling, that's why they're never in a reasonable top 10 but the food isn't anywhere near as bad as people make it out to be. I have no need to go there, there's many places I prefer closer to me, but I'm not gonna be sad if you give me a sandwich from either place.
I went back and listened to the order taker, and didn't find her rude at all. She was direct, and no-nonsense, but I can't imagine why some people find her rude.
Dalessandros in Germantown is probably my favorite with White American, mushrooms peppers and onions, and a Coca Cola.....traditional Cheesesteaks started as slices that are chopped on the flat top, mixed with the veg, salt, pepper and garlic, then the cheese is melted into the meat with the bun on top which gets some steam then all scooped together into the bun and served....NO SAUCE
@@philbrogan958 I'll try to remember that,. Thank you....last time I was there in June 2019, my GPS said it was Germantown. I'm from Michigan and don't know the sections of the area
Pat’s and Geno’s are both definitely tourist’s traps! I’ve never had anything from DaLessandros but ive heard they are the bomb. Tony Luke’s and Jim’s are both great. Next time you go to Philly also check out John’s in South Philly. I may go to cheese for a cheesesteak is either American, Provolone or Cooper Sharp. I have to have fried onions and mayo on my steak. Sometimes I like to have mushrooms in my cheesesteak too. Ketchup is also an option depending in my mood.
Whooaaaa... 1st mistake. Saying mozzarella or provolone over the OFFICIAL cheese of a cheese steak.... everyone knows you say.... "cheese steak wiz wit". Always wit da wiz. And I'm Canadian bro...

I wasn't sure what "long hots" (peppers) were, so I had to research. I'm pretty sure this must be an east-coast thing, where there are lots of Italians. We don't have them out West. Does this sound right?: ITALIAN LONG HOTS (LONG HOT PEPPER) capsicum annuum 100 - 1000 Scoville Units. A common accessory in homemade Italian comfort cooking, long hots are generally fried while still green, or roasted with olive oil, garlic and salt and served whole, skin and seeds intact. Scovilles: 1000
Love your videos! Keeping coming! Question: when you got peppers at Jim’s and TonyLukes, what kind of peppers are you referring to? Jalapeño, Banana, or sport peppers as in a Chicago Dog?
I remember a fellow marine from Philadelphia, would absolutely lose it if someone said Philly cheesesteak! Instead of just cheesesteak sandwich 😂😂😂😂 the place we went to wrapped the sandwich in brown paper , greasy but delicious!!
Go to a 24 hour corner store in nyc or a 'hood fried chicken joint & i guarantee you a great cheesesteak, without that cheez whiz crap, for WAY cheaper. For less than $10, you can get a whole meal & probably still have some change left over.
I hate how when he says "philly cheesesteak" the people taking his order get aggressive. I see the same energy in the comments. Like damn, calm down...he's not from Philly... Ya'll acting like the world is gonna end just cause he said "Philly Cheesesteak instead of cheesesteak". Not really a good way to treat someone visiting your city...

Jim’s steaks was always my fave- when I lived in philly.. thanks for your videos, really enjoy them👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻💗
Not ground, Chopped! Geeez

King Savage it’s not offensive, it’s incorrect, and it matters. 🤦♀️

But why are they so popular as being the best?

DeNics & Tony Luke’s make the best roast pork and broccoli rabe with that Provolone cheese mmmm MMMMM
I went here during the philly auto show a few years ago, places was packed. The line for dinics all the way around and the People I was with didn’t wanna wait
Tremendous corned beef or pastrami, john roast pork too
and pleasing dont pronounce it like reading a book. it's pronounced like redding
Agreed I want to know what I'm eating..and that my friend will be thinly sliced Ribeyes 💙💪
Dusty Greenlaw ground beef one is chopped cheese
Rib eye
There is wrong stuff you cant put on a cheesesteak like mayo and lettuce and stuff like that.
Next time you’re back, you need to get roast pork sammiches at DiNic’s, John’s Roast Pork and Tony Luke’s. Trust me.
I've watched a ton of videos. Those three places you mentioned are a must.
Fuck yes, roast pork at Tony Luke’s.
I saw on Man vs. Food, Adam went to DiNic’s and said the roast pork was one of the best he’s ever had
Yeah the pork roast with broccoli rahb is bomb at Tony Luke's.
I’ll add you need to get it with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe. I like long hot peppers too but that’s not everyone’s things.
Don’t call it a “Philly” Cheesesteak. Just call it a cheesesteak
Great stuff! Keep them coming! 🥳
I just watched this at 1 am and had suffice with a bowl of Cinnamon Life
Cheesesteaks are typically chopped. I like mine with onions, sharp provolone and hot peppers. If I'm in the mood....sauce of the side. And also I like to have mine with birch beer. Yummy
birch is a must

Philly is a shit hole, your cheap steak and child cheese is terrible
@Fabian Albiar No. Ground beef is...well you guessed it GROUND. It's also almost never made from higher end cuts like ribeye. You need to do some learning.
Grounded grief call it that. Makes more sense than the chemical shit they feed us
Hello uncle Kenneth, how can we rate the food if we have not tasted it
Just imagine
It’s beef, bread and cheese. It’s perfection
Ken said if you’ve been there....
Ken great job, but for future reference if you ever go back to Philadelphia just say "Cheese steak please", Omit Philadelphia.
Was thinking the same thing...that is bare minimum hahahahha
melvin hamilton you don’t even need to say cheesesteak really...just steak is fine because you’re gonna tell them what kind of cheese you want (or they’re gonna ask). 😀
@@shinner65 Yeah you just say the kind of cheese and wit or witout for the onions.
It doesn’t matter. It’s okay to not blend in with the locals. It’s fine to be a tourist, it shows just how big you made it.
Good video sir, I really enjoyed the tour of Philadelphia and it’s famous Philly cheesesteaks!!! Greetings from Alvin Tx!!!
Provolone is the way to go on cheesesteaks. One thing also is that there are tons of mom & pop stores that make outstanding cheesesteaks. my all time favorite is in the suburb of Brookhaven. Everyone has their favorite little place
I'm from North Jersey. Have traveled a bunch of times to Philadelphia for cheesesteaks. I always have mine with cheese wiz and onions. That's it.
Brian Crosta I do cheese sauce or whiz mayo and ketchup
Pizza Sauce on a cheese steak uh no!
I agree and wonder why the hell they offer marinara sauce which is what that crap is
Nonya Biznes Well aren’t you just a miserable ray of sunshine? Wow. 🤦♀️
Pizza Steaks with Provolone cheese rules at Jim’s Steaks !!! Absolutely the best.
Funny, cuz I love ketchup on mine....but the thought of tomato/marinara sauce on it turns my stomach!

Thanks for your videos sir!!
Dallesandro is easily my favorite, Tony Luke’s is my #2, and my #3 is either Jim’s or Pat’s.
screw the old food reviews keep doing these ken man AMAZING
I agree, thanks for the feedback
(You can also order chicken cheesesteaks which are just as good)
Thanks for coming into our town and reviewing three great known places!! Watching this video has put me in a cheesesteak mood...I'll be getting on for lunch tomorrow lol.

@Nonya Biznes not really Canada has no school shootings also free heath care
@Nonya Biznes what you said was racist black people can run countries too
@Nonya Biznes What exactly makes all great countries white? Your racism is showing because last time I checked the U.S is multi-racial and was built off the backs of POC, and the same can be said for many of these supposed white countries. Colonization and slavery aren't just a part of history books for no reason.
Always a cold beer with a Philly! Great video👍
Always go with root or birch beer, cheese(always go with both), I prefer chopped finely and larger onions, and lastly add sweet peppers it will increase the flavor profile of the sandwich
All you have to say is “Wiz Wit”!
Nobody in Philly says that shit 😂
I'm a native and you were right Jim's is amazing with provolone cheese
Wiz with at Tony's though
Ken please come back and I'll take care of you
No you are suposed to use cheez whiz.
Exactly. Cheez Whiz is nasty.
@@crs290 Ok. American cheese is better on a hamberger but cheez whiz is the best cheese on cheesesteaks or fries nomater what.
You cannot make a logical comparison when you have different cheeses on different sandwiches at different places. It has to be made the same at all places.
As someone not even close to philly I was thinking the exact same thing.
toddbergamaschi73 Since you’re being overly granular, what about the type of meat, seasoning, bread choice?
Public announcement - No ground beef was harmed during the making of this review 😂
Although, you really can't go wrong, I really do feel like you missed out on John's Roast Pork's Cheesesteak. Phenomenal.

I’ve only had one cheesesteak in my life and it was from delassandro’s o my word this dude got me wishing I could relive that moment
Maybe give credit to the server at Jim's for the recommended hot peppers ;-)
Ground Beef 😂
@Fabian Albiar If I take a steak and chop it in two with a cleaver, does that make it ground beef? No? Why not? I "chopped" it didn't I?
That wasn't even busy for Dalesandro's. You caught it at a good time. Go on the weekend and you can barely move in there and sometimes have to wait outside after placing your order because it's so packed. Also most cheesesteaks are shaved ribeye. Some places use sirloin. I'm glad you enjoyed them
gosh they must be so delicious! After one bite you're hooked I'm sure!
@@RickyG225 Very much so. I'll sometimes try to eat half and save the other half, but I can never do that because it's soooo good
@@phillyant58 how do you save a cheese steak though?

When he said ground beef. All his cred went out the window.
Pats and Genos suck, and on top of that - they are rude.

@@kpmariner1998 @Ian Stevenson it's literally the same ingredients lol. I know who delivers the meat 🤦♂️. Everyone knows where the bread comes from(90 percent of steak shops in the city use the same place). The cheese is clearly not a secret. ITALIAN LONG HOTS (LONG HOT PEPPER)

A common accessory in homemade Italian comfort cooking, long hots are generally fried while still green, or roasted with olive oil, garlic and salt and served whole, skin and seeds intact.
