As an adult I have to say that my brain did not get swapped at one of my birthdays. These exploitative features work on adults, too. We have to realize that the product we are getting from tech companies is the maximization of screentime. There is nothing else with anywhere near the same financial pressure on it. No matter how wholesome content creators design their content, in the end, the point is to glue us to our smartphones, tablets, or computers. We need to decide as a society what we want to make of that product. I think we misunderstood it a lot so far. The same goes for dating apps. These are not apps to get us dates, they are apps to keep us interested in the process of browsing potential dates to show us ads.

As an adult, social media is terribly triggering. It's Iike junior high all over again. Adults get affected too.
My sons are grown now but I feel for young adults and teens and those adults triggered by abusive speech and judgmental attitudes.
If it gets to be too much, take as many breaks as you need to. Socialization, healthy socialization is important for people of all ages. But ... Everything in moderation. ❤️
Those tech companies didn't buy them their computers and phones. So why blame those companies for their issues and beg politicians to use force to solve their problems? Are their parents not responsible for anything?

Part of the problem though is that, not only is social media addicting for both kids and adults, but most kids are smart enough to know ways to sneak around their parents in general. This has been true with parenting for centuries, even long before social media existed (I remember growing up sneaking around my parents' backs to watch things, back when television was the addictive substance before social media replaced it, and kids have been capable of sneaking out of their parents' houses for generations).
@@Scarshadow666 the very act of sneaking around would limit the ability and time of the child to engage in harmful behaviors, making it extremely less likely that such behaviors would occur and, if they did, in such amounts as to cause what these girls experienced.
Bad parenting is what leads to cell phone addiction.
I’m a millennial, but my parents didn’t let me get a phone until I was 16. I didn’t have a smart phone until I was 20 (tho I did have an iPod touch, but it wasn’t connected to data). It’s scary to see kids as young as 12 trying to emulate adults and adult behavior in such a toxic way. I think all this exposure to the world only adds to the sexualization of girls.
I never felt this whole comparing myself to others with social media. What I hated was being available alllll the time. And I still do. That’s why I don’t have Facebook or IG anymore.

I agree with them, but I have mixed feelings. Using social media is not mandatory. It's best to learn at an early age to not always feel the need to join the bandwagon. That's where parents should step in, but the problem is that the parents suffer from FOMO, too.
I never got on Facebook when it was started, never got on Myspace.. I haven't logged into IG in two years and refuse TikTok or Snapchat, in the same way I refused FB.
Teach kids that it's okay to not want to do or to be just like everyone else, and that's a real start to changing this. Teach them that most ppl on social media are lying about their lives anyway, so that removes the glossiness and reduces the depression causing envy.
I agree. I also feel two ways about this. On the one hand, social media is ubiquitous in our world, and I'm not sure it's realistic to expect teenagers to wait until they're 18 to opt in. Humans are wired for social connection, and we don't live in a day where "community" is largely defined by our neighbors anymore; community is now found online for many of us. This is the way of the world, and the way of the world that kids grow up in. Their ask does not appear to be unreasonable since they're not talking about regulating social media at large, but just for 13- to 17-year-olds. That, of course, requires honesty from teens about their age when they sign up for accounts, which leads to the other hand:
On the other hand, companies are not the ones who have the onerous to ENSURE that teenagers grow up with positive self-worth, or that they don't spend too much time online. That's the parents' jobs. I'm concerned about this widespread sentiment that we have in our society today that if I feel bad, I must look for someone other than me to blame. Certainly, social media companies are designing their platforms to have an addictive quality--they want us to remain online for as long as possible. But if your kid becomes addicted to any given substance and you never took the time to warn them about what that substance can do, is there no room for self-reflection? The mantra of our day is, "I cannot be held responsible for my own actions, choices or words." It is very troubling.

I agree. My first account was on Tagged in the early 00s, then MySpace, I rejected Black Planet, got FB, rejected Twitter because I could write a status on FB lol, got IG, and I’ve deactivated all of those years ago. Life is pretty chill lol
Watching television isn’t mandatory either, but our society agreed there should be a ratings system to protect children from harmful content. Putting some guard rails on social media is a good idea, although a better idea is to trash it all together.
Teach kids about not giving in to peer pressure to join in online with their friends/aquaintances (and sticking with their decision to not be online) if they experience it too. I often let people know that I wasn't interested in joining Facebook/Twitter/etc, and had only relented to a Discord account at least (an account I rarely use).
Though I also agree with the mixed feelings about it too. As an artist that was taught that networking is a big deal for artists (and social media being the main area most artists network from), the pressure to join in on social media can be intense.
We used house phones no cell phones & I grew up to be a successful young lady I can openly say that these cell phones will & have destroyed our youth to the point where my kids grab their phones before they grab a toothbrush in the morning 😮 these are some young successful ladies & what you are doing is awesome

After I watched the documentaries The Social Dilemma, The Great Hack, and Childhood 2.0 , I realized the enormity of this issue. I applaud these young people.
Here's an idea, how about you never create a social media account. Boom, case closed.

Regarding social media all I can say is I am glad it wasn’t around when I was a teenager.
When I was 15 back in 1968-69 I was bullied/ostracized by a group of 5 boys who were led by a former good friend of mine whose parents went through a very acrimonious divorce that turned him into a very cynical and nasty bully. He turned on me because I think he was jealous of the fact that I lived in a secure and loving home with my biological parents and brother.
If social media had been around back then the harassment would probably have been much worse for me. I was able to escape it by transferring to a different high school in 11th grade which made a huge positive difference. My grades greatly improved and I made a new group of friends.
I do have a Facebook account but I am rarely on it. It seems like so many active FB users love to make their “look at me and my fabulous life” posts and it’s almost like they live their lives in the surreal online world.
@@endlessnameless6494 : I never thought of it that way but what you said makes sense about children from broken homes due to divorce being resentful of children from stable 2 parent households.
Another good friend of mine’s parents divorced in his senior year of high school and it had the same effect on him as my other friend I mentioned in my original post. He became bitter and cynical and used me as his whipping boy when he needed to take out his frustrations on someone.
My second friend was a sad case: one Xmas he had nowhere to go because of his fractured family so I invited him to my parents house for Xmas dinner. My parents knew of his situation and were very kind to him, even buying him a couple of nice Xmas gifts. While my friend was grateful for my family’s kindness, I sometimes think it made him feel even worse about his family situation.

As a Mother of a 14 yr old I have seen with my on eyes what social media has done to my child. She has severe depression high anxiety low self esteem and bulimia. All because she was comparing herself to others. She has been in treatment and has a very supportive family who loves her. We have to stop these tech companies who only care about profit not that our children are suffering.
The real question is why were you letting your 14 year old child consume media she was not mentally mature enough to understand. The problem isn't with the media, it is with the way you failed your child and want to blame others.
Parents should take authority in the home 🏠 and give healthy choices to the children.
The right here, restricting or flat out not allowing social media is a parenting responsibility.
If you do not teach your kids to make good decisions themselves, you will be in for a bad surprise. You cannot make all the decisions for them forever. And you will probably learn too late that you already lost control.

I think they’ve done studies that show social media has negative effects on mental health. It might not be that she’s not happy for them. Sometimes it’s just triggering for people.

It's great to see them trying to save the next generation and essentially society as a whole. The only thing people can do that actually impacts these companies ethics is voting individually with their attention, time, and money. The government won't save us from this.

I would love to see more done on a federal level for kids rights in school for bullying. Seems only the upper class have any say in the matter, because they are rich and can afford going to court in the first place.

Everyone has a smartphone these days, and now everyone is getting bullied/sexually harassed and/or targeted for their demographic by advertising, mainstream media which one could argue is demonic and downright evil. We need to be more aware of how much social media can have negative affects so we can protect future generations from this onslaught of abuse and lies for profit.

What the government can do is require social media companies to verify user identity using government documentation. IE drivers license or state id
How on earth would that help? That's like trying to fight a fire with gasoline. These companies already have more information about their users than any government could ever dream of, that's their entire business model, the only reason they exist is to collect data on their users and discover more and better ways to manipulate them to make them more attractive to advertisers so they can charge more for more tightly targeted ads. I fail to see how requiring users to supply them with even more personal data gives them any reason to do anything differently, all they care about is keeping eyeballs focused on screens, period.
Economic productivity has grown consistently in America for decades. On the other hand, wages haven't moved since the late 70's. As a result, parents have to work twice as long to make the same wages. When finished, they're much more likely to isolate, medicate or just go to bed. When combined with the development of social media today's kids have been placed at extreme risk of a wide variety of negative consequences. Imagine growing up in the home of an absentee parent or, worse, one defeated by today's professional demands. American employers have been cutting corners for decades at the expense of its workers. Initially this wasn't such a big deal. Not anymore. This is a dynamic that has compounded yearly, for decades. Parents are being placed in impossible situations and the results are terrible. This is not a moral failing of the parents. They're simply being squeezed to death. I can't help but wonder if these draconian economic practices are the root cause of our nation's problems, be they crime and drugs, greed and pettiness or fascism and hate. I offer no solutions, however, the situation is unlikely to self correct.

I'm so glad I grew up without internet, gaming consoles and smartphones. We actually talked to our friends face to face and went outside to play and ride bikes, play sports. Our friends were actually real friends and didn't have to worry about how many likes we got or what a person that you don't know or ever met talked crap about you from across the country or even the globe but can't say it to your face. Online bullies can't say something bad to someone's face only online and most have a fake profile.
Maybe you, as a female, should start by being accountable?

Kids are growing up too fast..worrying about things they shouldnt be worrying about , instead of having fun..You only get to have one childhood. I have yet to see kids playing outside together or going to the mall with friends, which was one of my highlights growing up. We'd shop at Sids, and buy our Levi's or corduroys, Carpenter pants were big back then in the 70s....and then go to woolworth and have lunch, or buy a ice cream cone at Friendly's. We couldn't get enough fresh air. We walked, rode our bikes, and had fun. Who wanted to sit home..that was called punishment in my day. So sad..I wouldn't want to be growing up at this time.

72 Baby here and we grew up when TV went off at 12 PM, once you saw that flag you knew no more TV for the night. And as far as socialization, we loved being outside walking to where we needed to go and even though we had a house phone my parents shut that off at a certain time.Ijs

They should hold themselves accountable. They chose to get involved no matter how you look at it. No social media platform forced them . Example ...I drink sometimes, so does Billy Bob over there. Billy gets in his car and plows over 2 people ...they are trying to tell us that it was the alcohols fault, not Billy's; he was just innocently drinking and should just sue whoever manufactured the alcohol.
Yeah, and drinking alcohol is illegal if you're a minor. That's kinda what they want, right? They want to restrict access for minors and make it save for young people to use. And that not being the case while these apps are still aimed at very young people alot of time is something these companies should be held accountable for.

Stopping social media bullying is not going to stop bullying altogether, and it does not stop the underlying cause of why teenaged these days are fixed on to their phones. When you have house holds where you need a dual income to survive, parents become to busy to engage with their children. That in turn makes kids want to get validation and belonging through other means

I'm really glad UA-cam no longer shows the number of dislikes on a video. I think that was a very unhealthy thing, and I think those numbers were manipulated by third parties to influence opinions and attitudes of US citizens -- in order to breed extremism and conflict. When the number of dislikes was massively larger than the number of likes on a serious news video about the pandemic, for example, it created the sense that the world (or at least the UA-cam audience) was dominated by conspiracy theorists who thought the pandemic was some kind of false flag or hoax. It left me feeling anxious and depressed, and made me turn away for a time (perhaps the risk of users "turning away" is why UA-cam changed it). They say that the two main ways to change behavior in a democratic, capitalist society are "voice" (i.e., speak up about one's concerns) and "exit" (i.e., stop using the particular platform or service).
Um. You don't have to go on social media
Our entire country (me included) is focused on meaningless crap aka social media while no one is minding the store (our infrastructure, substations, etc.)

Regulating Social Media is like America trying to regulate Guns, it's never gonna happen.
And the parents? Where the accountability should also be pointed directly at them.
this just doesn't affect young teens but adults also. Also many parents don't allow their children to have social media until they are in their late teens but said teens still are affected by it. Technology such as social media is different from TV because these technologies involve participation and the app that is looking at you. Tv isn't watching you and with said technology there are stoppers. you know when an episode ends- with social media it is scrolling up and up and up like a slot machine. TV doesn't have that factor. I say this only to be mindful of parenting today and not judgemental. also with social media the algorithms are designed to addict users. Media companies need to be held accountable because of this reason, mental health and privacy issues. Don't get me started on how social media messes with our society. Please watch The social dilemma if you haven't seen it or read up on the addictiveness of social media. Even the creators of said app find it hard to regulate themselves when using these apps.
Unfortunately there is no solution. Even if we ban these sites another one's will emerge..
Could do what south Korea does and force the companies to register all users and make sure the people are real and are held accountable for all the rancid crap that they/we do. They have some sort of social security number registration thing.

High school football is also horrible for teens and their health. Should we make high school football touch and not tackle by default? Do high schools need to be held accountable and stop exploiting student demand for such a harmful sport? I don't think so. People are increasingly opting out of football for all these reasons. The same can be true for social media.

This is not helping anyone but these girls egos. This would be like blaming companies that make knives for all the people that go staving others.
These are just tools, they can be use in healthy productive ways and they can be used in destructive unhealthy ways like any other tool.
