I also saw it as a criticism of social media and the addiction it promotes (with all the problems that that carries) I think Alex lost it here, because he's talking of the documentary as if it was criticizing all technology, but it doesn't, it just puts into question the way we use it.

As a teenager who's always told by adults to get off technology, I actually really liked The Social Dilemma. I feel like it never really forcefully said to get off social media necessarily, but it explained how it does control your life to an extent that you probably don't even realise.
Totally agreed, especially "don't even realise" thats what this documentary is trying to do to start a conversation.
For sure there are pros of social media but i think cons of it are never really discussed in detail and when somebody tries to tell it we (mostly millenials) dismiss it as "OK BOOMER SAYING INTERNET BAD".
Old person here 😅. My first internet was dial up and what I've noticed across all spectrums is people are less connected now. Atleast in real life. About 5 months ago I deacted most of my social media because I noticed throughout every day I was constantly thinking what can I post, who posted today. It's kind of crazy and extremely time consuming.

What he didn’t really say is that these guys, Tristan Harris is the one I know most about, are actually really trying to raise awareness of this subject. They’ve done a lot to try and do something about this, including the documentary which was trying to warn us. They’ve done the best they could but no one is listening, which is the real problem. Everyone is blowing these guys off, and Alex did a little bit too. They’ve been trying to do something, but no one is listening, so when they came on this documentary and it was really popula people started questioning why they haven’t done anything before now, but the reality is they have.

Everyone is addicted to different things for different reasons so their is no one solution for everyone. Even these guys still use social media, they’re just trying to get everyone to see that if we want something to change, we have to change our own patterns in our lives.

Dare I say, this is all very old news and some of this stuff has been a problem even long before the internet. Like the pressures of peers and groups and the influences of conspiracy theories and propaganda on people have been a massive problem since the dawn of civilization. I think the documentary was trying to tell people use the internet with moderation. Which is something we should all consider for all aspects of our lives. We don’t use anything in moderation and therefore we get addicted to things like the internet or social media missing out on things in the real world. Doesnt mean its bad its just time for a diet.

My sister hates me for some reason and asked my dad why I’m alive and he says ‘did I suppose to kill her when she was born’ and they say a lot of similar things to this and either expect me not to have feelings or to forget it by the next day
In one way I understand because my dads parents said stuff like that to him apparently all the time but when I look at my uncles they are messed up as fuck so yeah

There was this really cool guy in my college class who willingly never used a phone or computer, feeling his life would be better off without it. He was handsome, intelligent and charismatic, should have been the most popular guy in the class. But he wasn’t.
Because he didn’t communicate with everyone on a daily basis outside of college, he was continuously left out of events and isolated. It’s not that people didn’t like him, it’s just that he wasn’t ‘connected’. I felt really bad for him. He was brave, and I really respected what he was doing.
a naive endeavor from your friends side, he didn't have to go that extreme in quitting tech. a simple handheld phone to keep around wouldn't have hurt. however, if he was content navigating things that way then who am I to tell him otherwise.

like, yes, social media is kinda shitty on how they try to use up 24 hours of your day and end up manipulating people (even if it wasn't the intent), but if you're fully disconnected, this happens.

I highly recomment the series person of interest that in the background asks that stuff philosophicl clever, but entertaining, and the paranoia.
Its really educative in stating to think about ell realistic technology and is a bit scifi, but scary grounded. That everyone should watch. It builds, and delves more and more over seasons.
Thats my recommendation on the good and dark sides of modern technology.
If you felt bad for him why the fuck didn't you invite him to things lmao? Most invitations to go out to the bar, or an event, or party I've ever gotten was initiated in person. Sure details might be worked out over text later but if there was someone I only communicated with face to face that I wanted to go I'd invite them to their face and make sure they had the right info.

Racer MK8 did you watch. The documentary. It didn’t dismiss that it’s a problem for adults too it’s everyone’s problem. It’s just that the younger you are the more elastic your brain is and you shouldn’t be getting too much of social media when your brain is developing it will likely do more harm than good.

but I think the Internet is also the most powerful tool at this point in time.
You have the means at your fingertips to educate and build something for yourself in a way you never could before if you learn to navigate it correctly.
You have for example the possibility to learn about scientific understanding and how to dissect arguments so you're able to not let yourself get swayed easily by what other people say.
This is but one example I could think of because it applies to me personally.

I think you missed the point, it's not that we should fear the internet or not use it, but rather be cautionary as to how it effects us. People really don't think about what ways companies use their info. In the EU there's already cautionary laws protecting peoples rights to privacy and things like that. I think it's one of those things that it's not a problem until it's a big problem.

If there's parts of social media that's bad, you're allowed to disagree with it. There's no point in highlighting the good if you're not making an argument to why the entirety of social media is bad in the first place.

Yeah, same. The only app I get notifications for is the messages app, because a lot of people I know have anxiety and know that when I don’t get a response within a few hours, I start to panic a bit.

I don’t think that the “internet is bad and should be abandoned” was the point of the documentary at all. The point was that AI used on internet platforms are designed to hold our interest for the profit of others. And what has a growing tendency to keep people clicking? Drama, violence, conspiracy, shock (case in point, every UA-cam thumbnail). The point was maybe we should have AI that encourages and promotes the better angels of our nature and community. Love instead of drama. Debate instead of fights. We all know the internet and technology is growing and advancing at a rapid pace. It’s our duty for our future to have it advance us our humanity as well.

Yeah I didn’t even watch the documentary but his video didn’t give any amazing new insights as well. It was more like “oh boomers and Karens are complaining about the technology being bad after making a lot of money” and then squeeze an ad at the end.
The message of the Social Dilemma is that there are people who fundamentally cannot understand that there are people who have different ideas than they have and when they were confronted with the reality that there are people who think differently than they do, for better or worse, they became frightened and wanted those ideas to be negatively labeled and then forcibly silenced.
@Eric Hawkins Yes, but we didn't make a documentary stating that the editorial section of the newspaper was what was causing people to have "bad" ideas. The amazing thing about this documentary is the belief that there exists ideas who's very existence must be silenced and that there are so many who believe that it is the role of either a faceless corporation or an elected official to decide which speech to censor and how to censor it. I'd rather live with dissenting and even hateful opinions than to hand over the power of which ideas are "safe" to someone else.

It seems as though the global society which was created upon advancements in technology often cannot/ refuse to handle the weight that comes from the merging and clashing of ideas. After all, having different and similar opinions is an inevitable part of human nature. No matter how much we try to deny, repress, or ignore the simple fact of it all. No one can silence billions of individuals. I hope more people can realize that.

@@LifeWithMatthew No there were studies done about news paper bias way back in, can't name anything these days but I did a report on it for english in middle school about news media or something and read a lot about it. Someone should make a comparison.

Yes I'm aware of the red scare, well we might as well call it the first red scare these days, however my point was with what I perceive as the largest issue with the "documentary" "The Social Dilemma", that is what I find to be the message we should be taking away after watching it. The fact that such things happened in the past does not change the main issue with "The Social Dilemma". It's also somewhat unique in that we see a change in the way people are trying to silence dissenting opinion in that it's no longer the idea itself or the people supporting the idea as it is the platform. It's the platform's fault for allowing this to be discussed. It's the platform's fault for not kicking them off of it. I do not believe they should be picking sides.

I mean to be fair, everybody manipulates in one way or the other. Even the documentary used manipulating techniques to make us feel certain emotions that were in tandem with what they wanted us to feel.
It's more important to not assign adjectives to mere tools. Manipulating is a technique and it isn't evil or good. It depends on how you use it.

@@imqqd4264 I can understand your sentiment but those were already issues we know of. For instance, so many people have complained about personalized ads and all they did was simply echo out what everyone said. I personally enjoyed the documentary but there was a lack of epiphany. There was no conclusive reasoning on how tech giants can be policed. The only good thing I got from the documentary was its influence politically hence the reason i simply summarised it as "don't be a bigot"

They’re not berating us for using social media. They’re bringing awareness to its addictiveness. And it doesn’t really matter if they’re the ones who created this system in the first place. Many people do things they regret; doesn’t mean they can’t speak out about it.
It’s crazy to see people who built this “monster” profit from it so much monetarily and then to turn around and shun us for using it.
Apart from that they have a point though, yeah social media can be used for good but there’s a lot of people that aren’t using it in a healthy way. It really is driving a lot of people crazy and you see how much people can change when they gain a little bit of clout. People are getting depressed because on the internet you can become whoever you want and portray whatever you want, and people are witnessing this day in and day out thinking this is normal when a lot of it isn’t reality. Sadly though I don’t think they mentioned what the world would be like without it because that would never happen.
My big problem with the argument of “it takes data and it’s bad” is that people who use it know this and you telling us this isn’t helping at all. In my opinion I think overall Social Media is a net positive. People just saying that it’s the devil aren’t helping. Give us an alternative, better yet, give us a solution to its problems.

Ultimatewolf Exists The documentary itself said that the internet and companies involved with it need regulation. Legal safeguards to protect the social media user from becoming the product could be effective once there are younger people in congress. It’s not difficult to conceive such an idea but highlighting how the algorithm pushes people to the extremes of ideologies and is responsible for people’s biases to a certain degree is quite important. Don’t dismiss the documentary just because it doesn’t go on for three hours listing the positives and negatives of social media. Social media would likely be undeniably a net positive if our information was safe because information = power

I have a feeling that the majority of "people" (children) in this comment section haven’t even seen the documentary and are now just following the opinions of some guy online (nothing against Alex, I like find his movie reviews entertaining) because they want to believe that internet cannot be the problem, ever.

Racer MK8 did you really watch the documentary. It’s common knowledge anyways but it organises facts on how companies can and have exploited us. They already sell our data to advertising companies and get paid to show us ads tailored for us because it drives clicks but it (the algorithm) can’t differentiate between right or wrong so it can very well misinform and divide people. Corporations can and will also use this data to further their own political agenda and will sell out its users to more than just advertisers I can guarantee you that. Overall not great tbh social media is great in moderation but the more you use it the more power you’re giving these corporations over you.

Acting as if people never abused media to spread lies or push their agenda. People who have access to it did it all over history. It's just that now everyone has a voice and it's just getting more chaotic.
People have always resisted change, that’s true. But there’s a multitude of studies that show just how damaging social media is. The only social media that I have anymore is YT. There’s some benefits for sure, but the negatives outweigh the positives.
@The Hyperbole I deleted Facebook, Reddit, and only kept UA-cam, and I can assure you that my life improved drastically. Instead of wasting my time scrolling through the same kind of drama over and over for hours, I decided to use it for more productive things (mainly studying and getting my shit together).
On paper, social media isn't that bad since it allows you to connect with other people no matter where you are. The problem is that everything reeks of "drama" or "attention seeking", that it becomes tiring after a while. I've had reached a point where just opening the apps was mentally draining for me.
People are just too shallow on social media, that it's just not worth it for me.
the only thing i keep is instagram reddit snapchat and youtube, twitter is a fucking cesspool or hate and negativity i wish they'd start enforcing their policies against bullying/harassment instead of just letting people bully someone off the internet

That’s literally bull. There’s been conflicting studies at best on the effects social media has on people. You might as well expand to killing all forms of media then if you honest to gods think the solution is to kill only one form of it. I disagree. The documentary makes a valid point at that these tech companies have more power than any enterprise ever has in the history of humanity. It’s beyond just up to the person using it it’s not in people’s control to go against the path of least resistance that the algorithm takes you along which is why our opinions have become increasingly polarised. But also the documentary fails to account for the fact that humans are insanely adaptive and we are likely going to adapt and overcome such a problem.

Ive just watched it and I gotta say: yes they do bring these up, but in the end the documentary is still very one sided in the opinions it presents. I personally believe that it does have a lot of points, especially with its points about tribalism etc but I do believe that the problems brought up here are also true. Due to the one sided nature of the documentary, it is kind of just another bubble.

Because of our various disabilities, neither of us can really live alone, but we can live together, and our common experiences allow us to open up and be ourselves together in ways we never could before.

"The Social Dilemma" annoys me because most of these people make it seem as though social media is the cause of all the hate and aggression, but it fails to acknowledge that this has always existed THEY just created a massive outlet that exposes people in that tiny town to larger issues. At the moment, covid lockdowns and restrictions have impacted entire world due to social media and all of us living in global village.
Global poverty will double next year and so will child malnourishment. Countries surviving mostly thanks to tourism, which is a bigger chunk of poor countries all over SE Asia, Carribean, Africa and Pacific will collapse. This isn't comparable to the period of WW2.
The internet and social media has brought me more joy than I can ever imagine having in my life, especially growing up in an abusive household. The internet was my only escape. When you move schools every year, you can't make friends. When you're not allowed to go over to friends houses and don't live close to any public or communal places to escape your home life, where else do you go? People often say that social media is hurting teen girls self esteem. But it's not like Instagram invented the modeling career. Before social media it was billboards, magazines, celebrities. Before that, royals and political figures or the church. I probably wouldn't have realized my sexuality or gender identity without the internet. I might have been repressed for much longer. I wouldn't know that the mental disorders I have even exist or how to deal with them on my own without social media. I owe my life up to this point on the internet and I wouldn't want to change any of it

@@kill4karma The documentary literally begin and ends on the idea that social media is not a wholly bad thing, it just desperately needs to be regulated. No one is arguing that social media needs to go completely and that it hasn't offered millions of people so many great opportunities, just that the way it is going it will have more and more negative consequences. So yes, we do need changes - just the right ones that are in the interest of the consumer and not the in interest of corporate monopolies, and you argue how there were things before social media that had similar impacts; that's an argument directly addressed in the documentary. Social media is a whole new beast and due to the nature of computing has seen a growth in processing power that we have never seen before.

Don’t know if it’s me but I feel like the documentary never asked me to delete all social media. In one/ one and a half hour, the documentary just tells you to be aware of the way social media works and to be even more aware for those who are not able to realize what social media are. Though, I agree that the fact that they interviewed only ex-social media board members has to be discussed.
One man in the docu encouraged us to delete it though.

But if you're not aware of what social media is, the documentary shows you a very negative view of it and leads you to not only be cautious, but paranoid, depraving you of the multiple uses you CAN get from the internet. On top of that, they said that they and their families don't use social media. Mentioning that, means that they also expect you to do the same.

People tell young people to get off the internet, without realizing the internet has become almost the only thing they can actually access. Crime is up in so many places that they can’t walk as many places as young people used to, going to diners with your friends has become far more expensive as their jobs become worse in terms of pay, and they’re constantly told that they shouldn’t be in places they should be allow to hangout (movie theaters, playgrounds etc). The internet is free, and they can get to it. Their other options have been destroyed.

Paul Hairston I agree instant gratification is an issue;. I work with kids (been a martial arts instructor for about seven years) and they definitely have lost a level of patience. Crime isn’t an issue everywhere, but even in places where the fun things that used to be out there are still there, kids can’t always get to them. They don’t have the agency to take themselves places since they don’t have the transportation and they can’t afford most activities which are still around. Take arcades for example; they are way less common and way more expensive wherever you can find them.
Dylan Campson when I was a kid we grew up in a housing complex with no stores, shopping malls or anything for at least a good 2 mile radius. Our only store was a Highs convenience store that was at least a good couple miles. We rode built ramps to jump bikes and skateboards off, played sports, played video games over each others houses and simply figured out ways to have fun. This was during the crack epidemic.
These kids feel entitled to our obligation to entertain them. Can they read? Can they run? They need to learn how to use their imaginations and have fun like we did. I think we need to stop letting these phones do all the thinking for us and them. I haven’t posted to social media since February or March and I’ve learned so much in that time span. UA-cam is my only vice and it’s because there are so many tutorials.

And like I said in my original comment, kids today are being restricted and punished forbthe ways that they try to have fun all the time nowadays. Their parents mock the books they read, they’re told their poor running is their own fault and not due to the way schools have lowered standards on health. Kids today are just as capable and bright but they’re being restricted from all the ways to have fun

Netflix is one of the most addictive apps, it definetely has an algorithm, it makes choices for you. And most people use it on their phones.
This film claims to want people free when it no only alienates us more, it's featured on one of the most alienating apps ever created.
Netflix does not benefit from you staying on the app for extended periods because they don’t have ads. You can’t draw parallels, there just aren’t any.
Netflix is addictive but it is not designed to hold your attention to move you towards a desired ad. It was not developed with the same desperate need to keep you on the platform. You pay for Netflix with money. You pay for social media with your habits & attention.
Not really an equivalence in my opinion. Netflix is tv you pay for. There’s no social interaction or “like” button to play with your dopamine. Theres no reward. There's no ads. Sure they recommend the most popular things, but it’s literally so easy to deviate the algorithm and search for what you like, if you’re bored you can shut it off whenever with no consequence to your well being whatsoever, unless you really value low tier entertainement. Sure maybe you can get ‘addicted’ in wanting to finish a series, but saying it’s the most alienating is a reach.

I like the points this video brings up about the one-sidedness of the documentary. However, they do briefly touch upon the positives of the internet and social media in the documentary. I didn't think the documentary wanted viewers to completely delete all forms of social media but to be aware of how these apps work and make changes accordingly. For example, download extensions that disable the addictive nature of apps like the endless feed or the recommended page if it's a problem for you. Or step away from it and see how you react to identify if you're addicted like the kid in the scenes. In short, use the internet mindfully as a tool, not to let it use you.
Yeah while some of Alex’s criticism is valid I feel a lot of this video was him not really getting what was shown to him or outright leaning into one message and not all of them.

Saw the movie a week ago. I deleted everything except UA-cam. You are one of around 45 other content creators, that i still follow because you make me happy. I kept Facebook till 2 years ago because of the contacts i would lose, but after deleting facebook and instagram i noticed that no one gave a shit. Only people i frequently had contact with outside social media cared. I never missed SM after deleting and i feel much better and less angry / frustrated all over.

I deleted Instagram and Reddit a few weeks ago. I also don’t view Snapchat stories, but I kept it to text people. It was just a bunch of toxic people. No one seemed to notice that I stopped using them either.

Now this below is a rebuttal to the points made in the video, so I'm adding a disclaimer: take note the backfire effect. People tend to get defensive and lash out when confronted with criticisms of their views and opinions, it's entirely instinctive. Might be pointless to say, but try to be aware of that while reading this. The video does make some very valid points about how these elites don't have the perspective of how social media has changed lives for the better, and how humanity has gone through all this doomer talk with other forms of technology. But there are definitely problems to the arguments presented in this video.
I'm not sure you necessarily got the point of the doc. It isn't about the cons of social media without analysing the pros of it, and definitely not about the power of connecting people through the internet (even went on a weird tangent about online video games when that part wasn't mentioned at all in the doc). It's about how social media, by its design, naturally tends to polarise people regarding the way they see the world by only feeding them what they want to see, and also how, by increasing everyone's social radius, subjects them to unrealistic standards of themselves, leading to mental problems. It doesn't matter how you or some other people anecdotally benefited from the advent of social media, because for the world at large, it is causing dramatic increases in mental health problems, and creating polarised bubbles on the internet that result in full blown violence and death because of conflicting ideals. It doesn't advocate for you to "delete all social media", but for you to be aware about the horrible positive feedback that the algorithms used in these social media apps can cause.
Note that throughout the doc, particularly during the portions about polarisation, they call the extremist views "far center". It's not some weird quirk of the script, it's because calling the extremist views "far right" or "far left" wouldn't be accurate, because both ends of the political spectrum are being played by social media algorithms. It is essentially a call for the viewer to examine for themselves whether they have also been sucked into a bias created by social media, be it right or left wing.
One perspective that comes across in your video seems to be that "obviously all this was gonna happen when they created social media what did they expect?" Well hindsight is 20/20, now that you've lived through the reality created by social media, of course it seems obvious that it all happened the way it did. And the doc also gives a bold prediction of the future that you seem to just brush off as not likely to happen, it's no big deal when the doc shows a character with the exact same view of the matter ending up becoming polarised by the viewpoints presented to him ad nauseum and getting arrested for participating in a rally for said viewpoint, that you seem to have entirely missed.
You also equated social media with technology advancements of the past in general, where the early fear mongers and people with vested interest in old technologies continually advocated against such developments and we turned out fine. What you seem to have missed is that one, those fear mongers weren't entirely wrong, those old technologies have not been without consequences (nuclear power, steam engines industrialisation in general), and two, social media is a fundamentally different beast, where it is specifically designed to take control away from you without you noticing.

Thank you so much. I didn't feel like Alex got into the real topic at all. And the point of the docu wasn't to ban the internet or social media. But that they have used it to companies and political advantages (oh who would have thought), because it has not been regulated. Also how those apps are made, they want to keep you hooked. He didn't get into that at all either
you nailed this point! i wish this had more likes so more people would see! it seemed to me that alex went into watching it not with an open mind but rather, just to criticize, and find what's wrong. to make a video off of it and profit. it wasn't that well researched or reasoned though after watching the social dilemma i found myself also, dissatisfied with the way it was presented wanting simply a traditional style documentary that included the people talking and explaining their points rather than that strange side story that was somewhat distracting from the actual point. i left the movie feeling that i got nothing out of it that whole hour and only learned and remembered the things that they said at the end
alex meyers missed the fact that this had nothing to do with irrelevant points dealing with inspirational storylines about video games and friends made. it was the wrong way to go about a documentary like this who's point is just to inform and make aware the other side of things. people likely already know about the positive aspects of social media and can think of that themselves

I have a great podcast recommendation that I think you guys will enjoy. It's called "Down the Rabbit Hole", and it was produced by the New York Times as a docu-series about UA-cam specifically and how it polarized us. I found the podcast, ironically enough, from Reddit.

That’s true, and it’s very easy to become addicted to technology nowadays, but it depends on the person using it and how they decide to use it, but I agree here, it can be extremely dangerous in most situations and can actually end up hurting or even killing others in a worst case scenario (like texting while driving for instance), which is why we don’t really have to give up social media and all that altogether, but we all just need to be careful about how and when we use it.
That’s not the only point of the doc tho please actually watch it it’s a good watch and Alex doesn’t do it justice. I’d say this is one of Alex’s worst videos he doesn’t seem to have any solid arguments he just comes off as personally attacked and latches onto the wrong things they say. Also overlooked how the doc prefaces its own point by noting the good the internet has done before turning towards the bad.
I can't see how people would have survived the lockdown without social media. It enabled them to stay connected despite physical distance and kept their morale high through memes.
People just need to balance technology. Take a break and enjoy reality. I know this year sucks, but we alwayw have time to take a breath of fresh air. Don't let technology control you. You control technology!
The point of the documentary was to highlight the bad parts about the internet and yes I agree to a certain degree it misses out on key points and dismisses them like the fact that humanity can adapt to rapidly changing circumstances but it was never expected to tell us what’s good about the internet I mean it’s plain to see the internet does do an insane amount of good. The docu serves to highlight how algorithms are made for profits and can rope more and more people into extremist ideologies and echo chambers which are rampant on the internet so I don’t fully agree with the stance this video takes.
So the docu is basically propaganda , discussing only one side of the coin without properly addressing the other side , manipulating people into believing the subject is either black or white ,when in fact complicated matters like this is always in the grey area . I believe the docu should have viewed the subject from both sides of the coin and let the viewer decide what actions they want to take
The problem I have with it is that it just discusses one side of he story. In the title it says social dilemma, but I don’t see the dilemma in the documentary, it only talks about the bad dangerous sides and in my opinion this just makes it worse, because if they would talk more about the good sides, people would, I think, also focus more on the good sides. The problem I have with thus kind of documentaries is that it, a lot of the time, only shows the bad sides. I really hoped this one would show the two, but it disappointed me a little bit

Before I was allowed to use the internet, I honestly didnt know anything about politics or what was happening in the world, just what my parents and teachers told me, and whatever other information I heard or could infer. After having access to the internet, I have changed my opinions on so many issues and subjects that I didnt even question before. I will agree that it is easier to get people into extremist ideologies, but only because it is simply easier to talk to people then it would be without the internet. I dont think everything about the internet is good, far from it. With censorship, exploitative corporations, and horrible things such as pedophilia being much easier then ever, I cannot in good conscience say the internet is all good. But this documentary does not highlight actual issues with the internet, it highlights nonissues. And that's a problem. I would be somewhat fine had they shown actual issues with the internet, but they didnt. That's not okay, and it shouldn't be treated as such.

The key word is regulate or harness it for the greater good instead of leaving it to companies to prey on their user base for excess profits. End me did you watch the docu? It’s not just because people can talk to each other easily it’s because algorithms tilt you towards rabbit holes. Just because you personally weren’t affected doesn’t mean people who are prone to extremist ideologies aren’t. I too have had my opinion change a lot because of the internet but there’s another side to it where people just get deeply cemented into their own ideologies and conspiracy theories. I never said the internet shouldn’t exist but it has massive regulatory issues that wouldn’t affect a normal child learning about the world but it might prevent him from getting roped into some weird fucking conspiracy or some political extreme that isn’t necessarily good tbh so don’t say “Oh if the internet didn’t exist...” because nobody is saying it shouldn’t have it’s almost universally considered a positive invention. But it has unseen dangers more than just this ideology shit it has companies amassing power not only through wealth but through information. The docu even shows zuckerburg trying to bullshit away the concerns of facebooks privacy but he can’t because he knows what he’s doing isn’t ethically sound.

Also I’m sure there is ways to work your (and many other) businesses online while also removing the aspects of social media that has such a negative toll on people’s mental health and sense of value. Removing the “addictive” part of social media such as likes would be a big step forward. I’m far more concerned about my friends and younger people self harming and killing themselves after being harassed and/or feel worthless due to social media - than a few businesses closing or finding a different way to operate. social media destroyed my own life so I decided to give up my phone. Yes you are right, these platforms helped many people but they suck all of our attention to the point that we won't care about the things that truly matter like our college years, our relationships with others, building a good career, and taking care of our mental and physical health.
I really encourage everyone to try social media detox from time to time, Look around you without using your phone and see how it's different.
My college years literally would't exist without social media cause of Covid-19, and I try and follow people who would encourage me on the topics you just mentioned, I understand social media isn't for everyone and shouldn't be everything of course, but it really depends on how you use it, except for publicity and such.

I'm tired of people harping on about the dangers of social media. Over the last couple of months, the voices of people in my country were heard through twitter and our government actually fixed some things following our outcry. It's not all bad, there's the good part and people tend to forget it.

I love social media but seeing old clips from like 80s-90s American high school just seems like such a happier time for everyone. Nobody’s hung up on looking hot, being really interesting and getting likes. They were just people just hanging out with friends. Wish I could have experienced that

Like Alex said I was going through a rough time where I started to lose feeling and I had no one to talk to but I meet my best friend on Instagram and he changed my life, he started to make me feel normal again and it was by just getting to know each other and both of us agree that we could not imagine our lives without each other, social media has done so good for people like me its not all bad and people (parents especially) need to realize that your life can actually become better through social media
I guess the social dilemma only focuses on the negative. I have uninstalled Instagram, Snapchat (damn I'm a loser), and Facebook. I haven't been procrastining much. But I kinda miss it. Social media has become part of the world, we make new friends, supports shops online.
The only thing we need is to limit our time on social media.
For my part, i can communicate with friend via calls, sms or RL. No need for a facebook messenger or the newest pics on Insta. Most of my "friends" on FB didnt even notice when i deleted my accounts.

Social media (insta, facebook, Snapchat) didn’t make me happy, and I don’t miss it. If you do miss it, you should download it again. We know what we want, and just denying what you want is pointless in my opinion. We can better analyze our behavior and set rules so it stays a positive experience. So go for it if you want!
thevso A addict doesn’t just ‘miss it’. They have often have physical signs they want to do drugs again, like feeling sick or hyperventilating. This is why an addicting is so dangerous and hard to beat, even if you, with your mind, really want too. I understand what the documentary is trying to say and I agree with a lot of it, but the thing that really bugs me is that they’re only looking at the negative. There are negatives about literally everything. That’s like me saying “water is bad because, if you drink to much of it, it can lead to over hydration”
Personally, social media has helped me more than it has hurt me. I am more confident, I have more friends, and I’ve learned better social skills. Sure, I need breaks every once in a while cuz shit gets toxic, but that doesn’t make social media as a whole bad.
Parents need to realize that technology and social media are here to stay, and keeping your child away is only hurting them more. Instead, they need to teach them how to responsibly use social media and how not everything is true on the internet. They need to teach them how to use social media safely because everyone at some point in there lives will encounter social media, and I can guarantee the people who were restricted of it as a child will struggle more than others
It's pretty ironic how you criticized the documentary for only showing one side of the story when that's exactly what you're doing in this video. From how I took it the overall message of the documentary wasn't to completely delete all social media (although some of them do say that) it's more to highlight what is happening behind the scene and make us cognisant of it so we're more informed and can make better decisions on how we interact and use social media.
The other point that was heavily mentioned in the documentary which you didn't cover that much was that they wanted social media sites to be reigned in and regulated more (so we don't get situtations like Cambridge Analytica)
Dismissing it because they don't highlight the good is like dismissing a documentary on global warming because it doesn't focus on all the good that has come from burning fossil fuels. There is a problem and that is what they are trying to highlight because it's dismissed by a lot of people (just look at this comment section) and that's not a bad thing.

They might have taken their conclusions a step too far, but their core argument is still that _capitalizing_ on human weaknesses and _exploiting_ it with algorithms is wrong, not that the technology behind it is inherently wrong. And that argument definitely holds up well.
No example you mentioned _requires_ the exploitation and capitalization of the flawed human nature. We can have the good of technology while simultaneously trying to mitigate the harmful aspects.

Here's my opinion for the 1 person that will read all of this.
So, I understand what you're saying and where you're coming from, but I still think there's a very valid argument that social media has been a net negative for humanity. Loneliness, depression, and suicide have only increased since the epoch of social media. Sure, there have been some positive effects, but I think that the negative far outweigh them. I don't know if I would ever say we should ban social media entirely, but I think it might be good to encourage people to not use it as much as they currently do. I quit social media some time ago, and I've on the whole felt very good about it. My mental health has gotten way better, I'm way less insecure, and I've been able to build amazing friendships with people because I've been focused on real life. Like you said though, I would be really interested in a study that compared something like life content in an Anabaptist group with "average" people.
the reason people are depressed and lonely is because they are addicted to it and people will always be addicted to something so I don't know what people are so upset about all I'm saying I think the film has a lot of exaggeration (aside from fake news spreading on it) the truth is older generations will always lecture people about technology lol

I saw the movie thinking that it was a documentary but it wasn't a documentary, it's a docu-drama that feels like a horror story.
It was actually amazing how much foresight they had about how addictive they made these apps.

Okay, and how does doing that help the situation at all?
I saw this documentary about a week ago, and one thing I remember really not liking was how the entire show was spent complaining about social media and how it's the cause of our depression, addiction, insecurities, poor work ethic, etc.
But never once did they mention what to do about any of it.
In my opinion, it is in the hands of the creators to make sure they're not taking advantage of us- BUT it is our job as well to be aware. There should be "Social Media Awareness" classes available- not just how to stay safe on the Internet, but how to spot fake news, how to cut yourself off/self-control when it comes to scrolling through a feed, self-discipline, self-love in the face of lies and/or other, "prettier" people. Things like that. At the beginning of the documentary, a quote from Sophocles appears, saying that with every super powerful thing that appears there is going to be evil to it (or something along those lines, don't quote me). But this documentary contradicts itself, failing to realize that for there to be an evil there has to be a good. A strong, consistent good.
I did watch the movie/documentary and I don't think they were harping on deleting social media apps, they were mostly pointing out its adverse effect on people and how it can be a dark hateful place . Two things that I have felt first hand which was mentioned in the movie/documentary as well are :
1) Losing friends who have a difference in opinion over politics , they assume they are right and anybody who isn't inline with their believes are anti .
2) Feeling a complex from random strangers who seems to have a figured out life on social media apps. and etc etc
What they wanted to portray was these big companies have lost sight of what said apps were supposed to be and only focused on how they can profit off of us , without considering if it had a positive or negative impact. Lost their ethical sense of business
And this is just my opinion.
It seems like their issue isn't only presenting one side, but not presenting *evidence* for their side.
A trend can still be true even if evidence runs contrary, for instance you can find plenty of people who haven't experienced the effects of global climate change. The hard numbers are what matter. SciShow, for instance, just talked about how political ads have been getting more negative over the years, and that's been linked to social media. I don't know enough to know if the documentary's overall point is right or wrong, and if all they provide is the opinions of some millionaires then I'm left with nothing to bring me closer to knowing.
They showed plenty evidence from their side, and I experienced in my own country these evidences, which they talk about it at the documentary as well, it's not about just deleting all of your social media, but how social media is controlled to control you over some industry believes. They are right, those social medias need more rules and control regarding our own privacy.

I watched the documentary and actually made my parents watch it. Though it was definitely flawed I thought a lot of it was pretty interesting and raised valid points that I think would be slightly ignorant to completely ignore. Perhaps it’s just down to interpretation but I didn’t get the whole “the internet is pure evil message” from the doc I mostly got “monitor and evaluate you usage of the internet and social media as it can be a very powerful tool for both good and bad” there are great points on both sides

social media gives people fake sense of power over everything. makes people think by tweeting something(for ex. cancelling someone) will make them not succeed but instead giving them more recognition. For what it is worth i think it has some positive effects, but if you look at the real truth, The negative overwhelms the positive. Bringing up a generation of depressed people. I am gen-z btw.

That doesn’t make any sense tho. If you pay attention to what they were saying, you’ll realize they’re not saying it’s your fault. It’s the way these companies are trying to get you to stay on there. You can’t try to minimize their greed and the underhanded tactics that they use for the purpose of money. Especially when doing this to kids is not okay. Sure it’s not a doomsday thing but you can’t ignore the number of suicides that have risen since social media. Or the fact that the internet has led to this new clout age where people will do harm to themselves for fame or follow trends that are dangerous. Yeah sure maybe social media is “the way things are done now” but only because people allow it to be. The reason I think that the documentary doesn’t delve into the good side of social media is because the majority of people think nothings wrong with it and that it’s great. And they use it and don’t know any other way. If you don’t show the bad side and try to get peoples brains thinking about the negative side or at least showing the consequences by showing the bad side of the thing they do every day, it will be ignored. I’m not saying in the slightest that social media has done no good. I can keep in touch with my foreign family members because of it so I’m grateful. But do the pros really outweigh the cons of what these companies are getting from us and doing to is as a society. I don’t think “no apps”is the solution but I think change is the solution. And the companies aren’t going to just change themselves. We have to work together to demand change. To try and throw most of this documentary away as “them looking down on us and slapping us on the wrist” or “just a doomsday documentary that is way too extreme” is unfair the many truths behind what was being said.
i agree-- this documentary was supposed to act as a wake up call, and adding a list of reasons that social media is amazing would only make the delivery of the huge issues pointed out in the documentary less effective (plus, everyone already knows how great social media is... why would they need to point it out?? lmao). i think that they tried their best to not make this documentary appear as though it's talking down on internet culture, but i guess that didn't really work out lol.

While I very much appreciate this critique as a teen, because it gives a different perspective than the the mainstream.One key detail I feel that wasn’t highlighted was the rise in suicide especially in young girls that is directly correlated to when social media took off. So the doomsday attitude while it may be annoying, it’s almost warranted because we see the clear evidence of the negative impact it has on children/teens
Also in the documentary they are very adamant about the fact that they didn’t make this documentary to make people get off of social media because they know that’s not a realistic goal. One thing they talk about is Instead of clicking on videos in your recommended it would be better to just search it instead, to kind of undermine the algorithm. They also talk about laws and or regulations that can be put in place to make social media a more conducive space.
Lastly social media is relatively new, so I think critique of it is a good thing . How can we make it better? Do the negatives outweigh the positives and vice versa? These are questions we have to ask ourselves, so that’s why I appreciated the documentary because it at least started a conversation.

I feel like most people that watched this documentary just got annoyed so badly about the whole “doomsday scenario lol it’s not that bad” angle that they didn’t really hear what it had to say about regulation, addiction redesign, suicide rates and lower self esteem rates on top of a docile new way of consuming news where you tend to ignore big important things cause you’re desensitized. In my opinion it went a lot deeper than just “tech bad” it was more like “corporations need to be held responsible for all of this collateral damage”
But that isn’t necessarily the fault of social media. It’s a symptom of a much larger problem. Our society as a whole largely ignores mental health, especially in young girls.
As a young girl myself, I’m almost 18 now, we are taught from a very young age that our worth as human beings is directly correlated with our looks. With social media that is a huge way to get that validation, or brew even more worthlessness. Couple that with the “oh girls are so dramatic”/“young girls can be so hysterical”/“oh it’s all those hormones”/“you’re just exaggerating, you’re not actually depressed”/“some insecurity is fine, it’ll help you better yourself” what do you really expect to happen? The rise in suicide rates isn’t surprising in the slightest and the blame shouldn’t be pushed onto teens, it should be a reflection of the failure of the adults in our society, that they would allow such insecurity and need for constant validation to manifest in high suicide rates.
Daisy yes social media isn’t the root cause but it amplifies the problems to an extreme whilst our mental health facilities globally still suck cock there’s more nuance to this than you’d think

It's actually the opposite.
The fact that mental illness is more acceptable today and it's easier and much *much* less stigmatised than before is insanely telling of how much of a rise in *serious* mental illness there has been lately by the suicide statistics which cannot be hidden.
Social media for me has helped shape me to the way I am. To see different people all over the world , their opinions and experiences is amazing and incredibly educational. It's a place where we all come together to move forward.
Like anything there are two sides to every story . Of course there is people who don't use it for good and do bad things . But that's the way the world is .
I think the main reason they didn't delve into the good side of social media was simply because that wasn't their aim with the documentary, their aim was to show how social media is much worse than people think it is. If they mentioned things like, it's a good way to connect then it would deflate the issue they are trying to bring people to realise. (lmk if that makes sense)
I hate this idea that the world has become worse in the last several years. It’s not worse, human beings have always sucked. we’re generally pretty bad. The difference is that we are aware that the bed is an isolated to specific locations. It’s everywhere.
I would not of met probably two of my best friends if it wasn’t for the Internet, and I wouldn’t have learned how not alone I was with all of my anxiety garbage. The Internet has allowed so many of us to figure out that we’re not alone in all of the crappy weird mental health problems we have. The statistics are a reflection of that, yes the internet has made our lives better but ALOT of it's focal point, which is Social media has incremented an incredible increase in mental health and suicide rates. As of your personal experience, my experience has been bad. It's both +ve and -ve, the issue is being aware of how they aim to increase our addiction to them, what can be done to change that
And everyone here has the right to disagree. Because opinions are something we all have. I am not entirely sure that the world is worse than it was 10 or 20 years ago. I just think we know more of what’s going on. The Internet has shown us that the world is a lot smaller, and bigger than we thought it was.
I am not saying I haven’t had horrible experiences due to the Internet. I completely have. I am saying however that for me personally i’ve had better experiences because of the Internet. As a whole, I’m happy it exists. I’m happy that technology has reached where it is.

Maybe I’m just a 90’s kid, but I didn’t need the internet to find my best friends, or to discover the truths and work through mental illness. The internet did, however, drive some of those friendships apart through stupid political squabbles that will mean nothing while lying on your deathbed.

I love Alex’s point about all technology has had push back from other generations or groups of people, it reminds me of this snippet of an article that was going around as a meme where teachers were complaining that their kids were using pencils or pens (I can’t remember which) to write on paper instead of ink and quill and basically saying how it was destroying the youth and making them lazy.
It’s hysterical to think about but it’s a perfect example of how people fear change and innovation to an extent. Regardless of what technology is created to better the quality of life or make something more efficient there will always be push back.
I love the internet. UA-cam, video games, and the creators that I watch have gotten me through so much, and still to this day. Thank you
