China’s New World Order - How dependent is the West? | DW Documentary

  • For years, good relations with China guaranteed the German economy healthy profits and cheap goods. But over time, that relationship has become a dependency. The documentary "In the Jaws of the Dragon - How to Deal with China?” explores the nature and extent of this reliance.
At a summit meeting to discuss the "New Silk Road” infrastructure project in October 2023, China’s President Xi appeared alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin. Whether in Asia or the Middle East - China is evidently pushing for a new world order, with offensives directed against the West. Germany is already feeling the consequences.
For a long time, trade with China flourished: From 1984, Volkswagen flooded the Chinese market with cars, ultimately exporting one in every three VWs to China. But now, Chinese companies like BYD are dominating the market with e-cars. And Germany’s reliance on China for computer chips, antibiotics and solar cells can now be seen as downright reckless. This dependence is becoming more evident as China increasingly comes up trumps both politically and economically. Whether regarding the Ukraine war, in its relations with Russia or its continued saber rattling in the conflict with Taiwan: Where China would have once conducted itself with restraint, it now demands its slice of global power. In Berlin, politicians are rubbing their eyes in disbelief: what was once a healthy relationship is now a codependency. And there’s no easy way out.

eurocentric culture collapses the moment it recognizes the absolute necessity of a healthy working population. its not eurocentric if its calling workers humans and doing anything but murdering them with labor induced starvation. the moment we recognize the humanity of the working class, we become Asiatic. simply because eurocentric cultures main focus is denying workers the right to be human or have any measurable quality of life.

      @linnyschlamm3310 22 дні тому +2

The term "dependency" alone, which is now constantly heard, is ultimately silly.
There is a contractual set of rules, trade relations with rules that everyone has to abide by.
So everyone is dependent on everyone else, and that's a good thing.
This is precisely why relations work worldwide, as long as the West does not unfairly shape the agreements to the detriment of weaker countries, which has unfortunately happened in the past.

Is it weird to blame China with the antibiotic argument? Can't Germany find other countries to buy or stock in advance? You should always be prepared for the unexpected, right? For example, Germany Siemens occupies a dominant position in the medical industry, if there is a medical accident somewhere in China needs Siemens products, but can not buy or stock, should I blame Germany?

There’s not a lot of money to be made in selling, or manufacturing, drugs like antibiotics, or some pain relievers. We’re currently having huge shortages of insulin, but that’s manufactured here in our country. The shortages are caused because of Bill Gates, and his fake, lab meat companies. In a simple sentence, in the context of economic globalization, China has defeated the United States with "high human rights", "low welfare", and "strong independent unions" by leveraging the "advantages" of "low human rights", "negative welfare", and "no independent unions" under authoritarian dictatorship. This has led to the phenomenon of "bad currency driving out good currency" in the context of economic globalization
So the fundamental solution to the problem is that the United States and Western countries must exert pressure and supervise the Chinese government to improve the human rights and welfare protection of migrant workers who are Chinese farmers. Otherwise, it will affect the rights and interests of workers in the United States and Western countries
Russia is a friend of the CCP and an enemy of the Chinese people; The United States and the West are friends of the Chinese people and enemies of the CCP

The entire fiasco of having most products produced offshore is now showing its negative consequences: loss of expertise, dependencies on rival economies, lower wages, etc. It used to be Western countries tried for a minimum of independence in areas like food production, until greed took hold and they outsourced even that. Firstly, direct investments accounted for by far the largest share of German foreign assets in China in 2021, at almost 73%.
The remaining 27 percent was accounted for by securities and other investments.
Secondly, more than 96% of the total primary income of EUR 15.6 billion that flowed from China to Germany in 2021 came from direct investments. These inflows were almost exclusively income from equity capital invested in China - interest income, which is also counted as direct investment income in the statistics, was marginal.
In turn, income from equity capital in recent years consisted mainly of distributed profits (chart):
Of the €15 billion in profits that German companies generated with their equity capital in China in 2021, they distributed €8 billion to their shareholders in Germany - for example in the form of dividends.
This means that direct investments in China are proving to be more lucrative than average for Germany, as the share of corporate capital invested in China, most recently EUR 114 billion, accounts for just over 7 percent of all German direct investments abroad.

Over the past ten years, the German government has paid almost one billion euros for the stationing of US troops in Germany. At 648.5 million euros, around two thirds of this was for grants for construction measures and 333.9 million for so-called defense follow-up costs. These primarily include aid payments to former employees of the US armed forces, the repair of damage caused by US soldiers and the reimbursement of US investments at former troop locations. This was revealed in an answer from the Ministry of Finance to a question from Left Party MP Brigitte Freihold.
Quite apart from the fact that the USA operates from Germany all over the world because the location is brilliant.
Germany is also considered the hub for US drone missions.
I think we are paying enough and it is time to reduce the number of bases in Germany.

@@lisashung9442 if America hadn't stabilized the world after WW2, if America hadn't protected the world from the USSR, China would have no chance of getting out of poverty. All of your neighbors hate you, ever wondered why?
The USA did not try to control any of China's businesses, did not push China into poverty. You made your problems and the USA helped you out of it (though of course Chinese people did most of the work). At least have the courage to be honest.

@@dfdf-rj8jr The shipping lanes are not controlled or protected by one country, that is a military-industrial talking point to get more dollars. The US also doesn't own and control the WTO which is a membership organisation where you can apply to join once you meet the terms and conditions. Which investors built Chinese business - the biggest Chinese investors are the Chinese people, the South Korea and Japan, number 4 is Germany and the the US.

It’s not fair to blame the ordinary person who has an ordinary income to want pricing according to their income. Wage theft by businesses is a MAJOR PROBLEM.
But corporations push the narrative to “buy more” in subtle but effective ways, such as producing products to fall apart after a certain time.

This is because of the policy the PRC implemented against investors or companies who wished to established their factories in their soil. The companies will need to provide access to PRC to their designs and other things. Now, they have copied this designs and produced their own product. In other country this will go against copyright but since they entered this agreement, they just made their business vulnerable.
