True story, I was working late in Houston and headed home in Deer Park. I was going through Pasadena and stopped at a bar on Red Bluff to grab a beer and relax. I walked in heading to the bar hearing the jukebox jamming to La Grange. There were 3 or 4 others people in the bar. I got my beer and looked around and it wasn't the jukebox. ZZ TOP was on the small stage in the corner jamming. I stayed there an hour and a half, until they were ready to leave. Met these guys and shot the bull with them.
ZZ Top was a great band to listen to in the '70's in my '68 Camaro and 8 track player.Billy is a much better guitarist than some people give him credit for.He is much more than a three chord guy like some call him. Also funny how the only member without a beard is Frank Beard their great drummer.Thank you Travis!
I had a '68 Camaro as well, along with some ZZ 8 tracks too, these were copies. Local music store would make us copies of any thang in store, if we were low on $$. I think he finally got busted? But anyway I gave 1500 bucks for th' Camaro back in 1980. Run great at the time, like a dummy I got rid of it?
ZZ Top began in 1969 with the same three guys until Dusty Hill's death in 2021. Same three guys for over 50 years. Still made music and still toured throughout those years. Saw the 50th anniversary concert in Cleveland in 2019. Thank you, ZZ Top!
Still waiting on you to do the blind guitarist. Jeff Healey "See the Light" night music 1988. Plays the guitar on his lap like a piano. Sings the blues and was founded by SRV. I promise this will blow you away.
@@brianrussell6570 If you're talking about a "big name" finding out about someone he didn't know about then ok, I will give you that he "discovered" him. He was already a star in Canada.
I have been fortunate to have seen “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas” Live 4 times. I recorded the last show (Full HD) before Dusty passed away. Always an awesome show. You must see many other tunes from them including “Rough Boy” (official video)…. “Same three guys, same three cords, for five decades” - Billy Gibbons at last show.
Love ZZ-Top. Another pick for an awesome 3 piece band from that same era is Triumph. They were from Canada just like Rush. They had some great songs back in the day.
Billy Gibbons was one of 2 guitarists (that I know of) mentioned by Jimmy Hendrix when asked about other guitarists. They actually played together for a while in the 60s. I also remember reading an interview article of Joe Satriani many years ago where he mentioned that guitar players trying to build their skill set should learn his solos.
My brother in law ran the sound for a major west coast venue for many years. the drummer is Q ing the sound over lay, tracks recorded earlier played to give fuller sound to match the recording. Common practice.
Nobody (that I've seen) has mentioned Robin Trower, another Power Trio, with Trower on guitar, James Dewar (RIP) on bass and vocals, and Reg Isidore on drums. Check out 'Too Rolling Stoned'!
This month (July 2022) Pete Pardo of Sea of Tranquility YT channel is running down his favorite 'power trio' bands, count down style once a day. His channel doesn't play songs, its all talk about music. Quite a few folks follow and participate, could be interesting about this reaction and question you raised from Rush. And today 7/23 is about Gov't Mule.... I really like them and ZZ Top.
Other 3 piece powerhouses. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, (with just bass and drums.), Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Cream. Oh, and Rory Gallagher with just the base and drum.
If you're still looking for 3 piece bands, there is another Canadian band from Calgary called The Stampeders (late 60's early 70's that you might want to look at. Everything from country rock to pure rock 'N' roll. good song to start with is Wild Eyes. Though they don't have the fullness that rush can produce they are still worthy of taking a quick listen to.
Take a dive into the first 4 albums. That’s where the gold is. A personal favorite no one reacts to is from Fandango. Album version of “Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings.” Perfection.
Do Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers. It’s probably their most Hard Rockin song in my opinion. Heard it on the X. So many killer tunes. You know. Manic Mechanic is one of their best, under the radar songs. If you’ve never heard it, it’s very cool and not what you are expecting. I Highly Recommend it! It’s up there with their best songs! Super cool jam. If you only pick one song from me, pick that one. As a TEXAN and a lifelong ZZ TOP fan, I personally guarantee this one or your money back! I don’t do bad music ever! Oh yeah, studio version only please. It’s the cleanest. That makes a difference with this one.
SRV and Double Trouble, live at the El Mocambo! Compare to Rush totally different genres and styles, but compare to ZZ Top, SRV and DT totally out class ZZ. Now everyone calm down I love ZZ, but I was at the show in Toronto that night and Stevie was on another plane of existence. Having said that Stevie was not as good without the backing of Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon. The way the 3 of them played off and interacted with each other during the show, still gives me goosebumps when i see the videos. The best song that night has to be Texas Flood! Look for the spot where Stevie is getting ready to start singing but then backs away and plays for another minute or 2 and Chris and Tommy just stay with him, totally improvise. You won't be disappointed I promise!
Not technically a three piece, save for when just Pete or John were singing lead, The Who had three instruments in the early days. They were as full sounding and ferocious as it gets. Check out a live at leeds track like young man blues.
RIP Dusty!!! Saw them when the beards were a little longer but their stage presence was one of the best. I have to agree that if you are looking for a Rush 3 piece, you have to dive into Emerson Lake and Palmer. In the Beginning is a good one to start with but Karn Evil is a long piece and covers a lot of Prog Rock ground.
Check out another three piece Canadian band called Goddo. Nothing fancy just straight-up rock and roll. They opened up for everybody back in the day.. including Triumph. Their biggest hit probably would have been Sweet Thing.. like I said nothing fancy just straight-up rock and roll. Loved These Guys. Try the live album Best Seat in the House.. the album cover alone is classic. Lol. Keep up the good work
I like the studio version much better. Another great trio is Triumph. They're from Canada and I've heard them called "Rush's cousin". I don't compare them though. If you watch them, they're better live. Fight the Good Fight (in Halifax), Lay It On The Line (US Festival) and Magic Power (US Festival).
ZZ Top and Rush are very different bands . Not even really fair to compare them , Rush is a progressive rock band . While ZZ top is a hard edged blues rock band . Billy Gibbons is not a progressive player , but must say he's a master at coming up with catchy riffs .
Another killer 3 piece is Early Gov't mule when Allen Woody was still alive, they added a keyboard player after his death in 2000. ua-cam.com/video/PBP8FnFOqak/v-deo.html one of the few good quality videos of them then on Conan, anything from Live at the Roseland Ballroom is killer to or Live With a Little help from our Friends.

Dusty Hill , Bass , was actually a Really GOOD singer . BIG voice . Billy is a bit Average , but one of the Best Guitarists there is . And Frank Beard , the always Beardless one (lol) , the Human Metronome .
1982... WTF - Half of the greatest rock music was written before you were born. You sure you aren't looking for Brittany Spears licks. LOL Great pick for ZZ!

It would have been difficult to find a version of La Grange with crappier audio. Did they forget to plug in the bass guitar? The rim tapping at the beginning of the song is inaudible. The sound was thin and shrill. I don't know who might have suggested this specific video but you might take them off your reliable sources list. Seriously, this was hard to listen to and not a very good representation of ZZ Top.

LOL
A Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers version by RUSH would have been insane!

CREAM and ZZ TOP
