Stevie was one of a kind. He was amazing, and had a heart of gold. He is missed.
SRV was a guitar magician. Thick-ass 13 gauge strings, playing lead and rhythm simultaneously . R,I,P and thank you for all the great music.
He's broken strings in the middle of songs and got a new guitar without missing a beat. The more you listen to him, the more you'll appreciate his talent. I hope.
You can see that happen very clearly in this video of "Look at Little Sister." @@blackthornpvp - Other than the part where I said after popping a string he continued to play until the best moment to switch guitars we said pretty much the same thing. The part that is more impressive is the being able to continue to play at such a high level with one less string than having a roadie help switch out a guitar.

A cool note about SRV, he couldn't read sheet music. Everything he played he created or picked up and played. It's said he could listen to a song, and quickly start playing it, then come up with his own take by the end of the song. A pure, Texas treasure.

@monalisaganser5813 SRV was indeed such a wonderful human! I was so blessed to be at a private gathering with him back in 1985 and sat and listened to him play pure magic for a couple of hours. The world lost a Guitar WIZARD way too soon and we are most definately the poorer for it 😒
Stevie Ray Vaughn was absolutely THE BEST!!!
I’m glad that you mentioned that he didn’t even have to think about it because Eric Clapton said the same thing. Clapton said sometimes when he’s playing (Eric)he’s thinking of what he’s going to play next and sometimes comes up blank but that Stevie was an open channel and it just flowed through him, and that he never had to think what he was gonna play next.
There will never be another SRV. It's such a loss to music that he left the world so soon.
He is proof that most people have the ability to learn to play a musical instrument. Then there are those that have a natural gift that no amount of lessons can compete with.
I hope his song Pride and Joy is on your list.
It's a favorite of mine, although it's somewhat tainted ever since it was used in a Criminal Minds episode(a great series).😂
And sad to think he finally got sober and righted his life just for a tragedy to strike 😢 And thank god Clapton didn't board that helicopter even tho he was suppose tho. RIP to all lost at Alpine ❤️
Stevie always played by feel in the moment making every version of his songs the same but different. His brother Jimmy was once asked by an interviewer "Does Stevie ever play a song the same way twice?", to which Jimmy quickly quipped, " Hell, Stevie never plays a song the same way ONCE!" 😁 Epic.
Also ..you mentioned how can he write that stuff down? Stevie could neither read nor write music. It was all by ear & feel.
I miss Stevie so much. Imagine the music he would have made had he not died so young.
What's even stranger is if you experienced SRV live, when he throws that guitar behind his back, you wouldn't even raise an eyebrow. Saw many, many very talented performers, and SRV, to this day, still remains as the greatest emotional experience I've had from any performer.
Snuck out of the house at the age of 14, bribed a security guard not to card me and caught Stevie at the Boathouse in Norfolk, Virginia in 1983.
Life was never the same afterwards.
I was fortunate enough to Stevie Ray at Fitzgerald's in Houston back in the late 70s. It was an awesome place for live music, he played just as hard no matter the venue or audience size! He was awesome 🔥🤘✌
In 1983, Stevie Ray Vaughan did a show in Canada called "In Session", with Albert King. Some of the many songs they do are good. They had known each other for years. So it is a jam session.
I knew both of them, and they loved jamming here in Texas.
It's one of my favorites, too. ALL of it.
Yes Albert absolutely adored Stevie. Apparently Stevie only had one black daddy according to Albert King. Even BB King respected Stevie so much. He was definitely loved by his peers who all thought he outshone them.
Of the gods, is the only explanation possible. Stevie's spiritual essence shines so brilliantly through his whole body, which is so intimately and fully expressed through the guitar and voice. It's really an epiphany to watch him. That essence is expressed in everyone to lesser or greater degrees. Stunning performance. Thanks for you reaction!

I agree on Tin Pan Alley with Johnny Copeland, another Texas Blues player. He also did Hendrix's Little Wing as well.
After waiting for years to see him concert, one night in about 1984 ,
I saw him at the Wiltern theater in downtown LA. It was an awesome show. The place was really jumpin, he was just blowing the crowd away. Then toward the last 30 mins he stopped and said, Got a special guest sittin in the Audience , Mr. Greg Allman, come on up! He got on stage and they jammed and played a couple of songs. And brought the house down!!! You knew you just witnessed something Historic.
Love you gentlemens knowledgeable insights. Stevie Ray Vaughan was gifted from God. A tiny little man with the strength of a giant in his hands.
He channeled music straight from heaven.

The Jimi Hendrix and Jimmie Vaughan wah wah pedal story was many years before Jimmie was with the Thunderbirds---just to clarify things. As to Stevie, he was simply the greatest guitar player of all-time. By the way, he was playing behind the back with 13's on the high E string. There were few guitarists who could play Stevie's guitar, even from the front, because they didn't have Stevie's hand and forearm strength. Looking forward to your exploration of SRV next month.
I love how he can make a guitar speak. He and BBKing made the guitar a whole living breathing creature.

Clapton also said Stevie is the only one he's ever heard who doesn't take a break while playing. Meaning just going through the motions for a bit while performing.
Pretty ironic too....Stevie was a fan of another Texan, Buddy Holly. And he also listened to another blues Texan from Beaumont, Johnny Winter.

He das in his car, and heard SRV, for the 1st time.....But, seriously, bro, how dare you comparing SRV, who's a fantastic blues guitar play, with LEGENDS LIKE CLAPTON, OR PAGE, OR HENDRIX😅STAY SERIOUS PLEASE.....I won't talk about the 2 best guitarists ever, Jimi Hendrix, and Jimmy Page, but, as a bluesman, just, listen to Eric Clapton when he played Bob Dylan's "DON'T THINK TWICE IT'S ALRIGHT, LIVE AT THE MADISON SQUARE GARDEN" (not the shit version with Bob Dylan), i cry each time i listen to it! Oh my, you haven’t heard much SRV if you think he doesn’t have enough emotion. He was better than Clapton and Page - both were in awe of him - and he may have been just as good as Hendrix.

I had the please of seeing Stevie live shortly before he passed away and it was mesmorizing to watch him play and I'll never forget watching him bend those 13 gauge strings...yes piano sized strings it was amazing to watch!!!! He also have a beautiful blues voice but didn't think he had a good voice😮...he played with many greats including David Bowie and he was very unpretensous for being such a legend so we lost a phenominal guitar player and an amazing human being!!! Love your reactions and look forward to more on SRV the GOAT RIP SRV❤
Got to see him from within five rows back a few times in the mid '80s at south street seaport in NYC. Been almost 40 years and I can recall it like it was yesterday.

Got to see him playing my college (CW Post LIU) in the early 80s before he got too big for that sort of thing. Best show I have ever seen. The college auditorium was built for top quality sound. SRV was SRV. Small place. Just perfect.
And that gentlemen is why so many of us asked you to react to this. He was the GOAT.

When Stevie Ray first came on the scene, the blues genre was dying. Nobody was buying those records or listening to those musicians till Stevie Ray started playing the blues. By inviting the old time blues musicians on stage with him, they were able to rescue the genre and it gained an entirely new audience. Make sure you react to his compilations with the old blues stars, such as BB King, Johnny Copeland, Albert King just to name a few. He also played with Jeff Healey on a couple of songs. He wasn't an old blues star but another outstanding guitarist with some major handicaps he had to overcome. They say Stevie was the most kind hearted man.
I was at his third from the last concert. So glad I was able to see him live.
There will never be another Stevie Ray.
That tore up thrift store looking guitar he plays is actually the first guitar he ever owned. That's pretty amazing.

Stevie's brother Jimmie doesn't have the flash his younger brother possessed but, a fine blues guitarist in the traditional sense. Stevie often said Jimmie was his first and biggest influence. And other great bluesmen had respect for Jimmie as well. Stevie's sessions with his mentor Albert King are well worth a listen.
The thing about SRV for me is i continue to feel that same excitement from the music year after year. Its Amazing. RIP Stevie, tell Jimi and Eddie we said hi!

This was 2 years before Stevie became sober, and according to Tommy Shannon (bass) SRV was in a cocaine induced coma an hour before this show. They had to have medical personnel revive him with IV fluids and vitamins, hence the more than usual notes and sweat that he usually has in this song. The all time greatest guitarist ever.
He does make little flubs here and there, but bends out of it. Clapton, BB, and Albert King all said that Stevie was a "direct channel" to the blues. A neverending catalog of phrases.
This was recorded in 1983 at the El Mocambo on Spadina Ave. In Toronto, Canada.
He plays guitar like we breathe air. Nicely put.
Riviera Paradise. This is a soulful instrumental. After a full day of recording material for the album, Stevie asked his producer to leave the tape running and to turn down the lights.
I moved to Texas in 1989 found his music and sadly two years after he was gone.
His history is great
If you want to hear his jazzy side then Rivera Paradise is the song. It integrates jazz and blues like I've never heard it before. You will enjoy it.

Great reaction guys. I saw him in and around the Detroit area including the same tour as this, at a place called Saint Andrews Hall. Play basically the same set, but he didn't play the songs the same, and that was one of the beauties of him was that you never heard the same version of a song Twice. There is a video from 1986 I believe from Daytona Beach that has the songs love-struck baby and rude mood same video and it was the first tour he did clean and sober after having real struggles with alcohol and drugs. A lot of people were worried, as was he, that he wouldn't be as good or creative without the substances that he was using. In fact, he was better, and in that performance The Joy on his face oh, you just know that this is a man who was happy to be alive and happy to still be able to do the thing you love most in the world. Stevie Ray Vaughan is my number one and always will be, I had the opportunity to see him live in a number of different settings, from small venues all the way up to full stadium events. You mentioned his freedom when he plays, you are spot on. He never played a song the same way twice. Each event was its own version. This set at El Macambo is considered one of the greatest live performances ever, though some songs played there, I prefer versions played elsewhere. He felt like fans deserved a unique show, not the same one over and over.

The only thing I can think of as to why Stevie Ray's incredible talent is super uncanny is that right after his mother gave birth to him, his dad must have stuck a teeny guitar in his tiny hands and the rest is history. SRV was truly blessed with this gift. He was a natural! I love his entire get-up, his voice, nice hands, the way he held his guitar, but more importantly, I love his confidence. It's not the puffed-up kind but the humble kind. He's a super-hero and a musical genius, and a generous, humble man! With all due respect, I don't agree with the 9.7 rating, I give him a 10-star rating across the board! So sad he was taken so soon by that unfortunate helicopter accident.

I've known at least 10 guys from Texas that can play like that over the past 60 years....but nobody on the east and west coast likes to admit it. Rock and Roll was invented in Texas, baby...all the way back from big band of Glenn Miller to Buddy Holly and on up....like Johnny Winter. Southern Delta blues and Texas Rockabilly mixed and every pop, rock and blues band in the world have them to thank.
I was born in The Hill Country of Texas in 81, I distinctly remember the rains he talks about. We don't get them anymore but we still have SRV

Bluesy you guys are funny! Albert King would never play with anyone else until he meant Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy still gets choked up when talking about SRV and BB King called him an open channel to the blues. Clapton readily admits he doesn't hold a candle to SRV. SRV was the first one with the guts to play Voodoo Chile live - it was his way to reach out to Jimi.
Watch all of the El Mocambo. It's unreal! It's so cool seeing someone see him go behind the back for the first time. He would also take off his hat and put it on the mic to go behind his head.
They did an album together and it is one of my favorite albums ever. I love the song White Boots 👢

Stevie was self-taught and couldn't read music, so he would freestyle every song. In fact, he never played a song the same way twice. He was truly a gift from the Heavens!

The pedal: Jimmie Vaughan’s high school band The Chessmen opened for Hendrix at Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth. Hendrix borrowed Jimmie Vaughan’s pedal because his was broken, and he broke Vaughan’s too. So Hendrix gave his broken pedal to Jimmie Vaughan, who fixed it and gave it to his little brother Stevie because he knew how much he admired Hendrix’s playing. I was lucky and got to see the Vaughan brothers play many times, together and with their respective bands, and Jimmie playing with Double Trouble and Stevie playing with the Thunderbirds, and Jimmie and Stevie playing on the same double-necked guitar. Fabulous Thunderbirds opened for ZZ TOP and The Rolling Stones at The Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Halloween 1981, which was the first time I saw either brother. I was 16 years old. They made a record together which was released right after Stevie died. “Long Way From Home” or “Telephone Song”, please!
There are videos of SRV playing with Albert King, BB King; Eric Clapton Johnny Copeland, Buddy Guy; Robert Cray; Stevie Wonder and others...sometimes several greats on one song!!!! Looking forward to April!
I saw Stevie and Jimmy playing the same guitar at the same time. Stevie on one end and jimmy on the other side. No mistakes.

In a recent documentary about Buddy Guy, Guy said that Stevie was the Michael Jordan of Blues.
I'm of the opinion that he was an open "Channel" that tapped into something truly magical thru the Guitar. Others like him were "Hendrix" "Albert Collins" and possibly "Jeff Beck" . There are guitarists who are able to tap into that open path" to something truly other worldly... When you get round to your SRV reviews, pls consider "Lenny" from the El Mocambo show, as well as "Third Stone From the Sun" from the same El Mocambo Show.. I had the pleasure of seeing him in person in 1985 @ the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia PA.. 2nd row .. changed my life .. RIP Stevie
Now you know why SRV is considered the GOAT Blues guitar player. FYI, Stevie played guitar on David Bowie's song "Let's Dance."
He played with true SOUL.yet he had the technical chops to play with great speed but he always tempered it with exquisite taste.
