We also did this based on your experiment. We set off on our van tour of the UK & EU and couldn't bare the double front seat. So I took my grinder and saw to it and the other half sowed the side up and I must say its spot on. For anyone concerned about the MOT. The mechanic said it was spot on. No problem. Saved me like 500£ on a new seat. Ridiculously priced those things 🤣
Thanks for the info regarding MOT, that's what I was wondering about while watching.. Just bought a Citroen Relay to convert and ideally wanted a walk through but not enough to spend £500 on a single seat, will be getting the angle grinder out instead.
@@Lou_Sylw_Bulgarian_Rescue_Dogs Haha never done any sewing before so we'll have to see.. I'll keep the seat cover in mind as "Plan B" lol. Thanks again.
Great job Mel , My mate is a MOT inspector and he said MOT Failure the middle seat belt will need to be removed because its a over the shoulder type on a seat without a back . no problem if it's removed.
I think you filmed a 'cracking' outro when you climbed through into the back without realising it :-) Brilliant video Mel. Too late now but hot melt glue is fantastic for fabric as long as its slightly porous to give it a key. I glue pinch buckles onto webbing straps rather than sewing them and as long as you glue small sections at a time and clamp them in place while its still hot it's immensely strong.
Why not mount the 'push button' end of the seat belt onto the other side of the seat that's left (far left side), and do the seat belt up in the other direction. Then you could have the whole lot pivot too without any problems, and the seat belt left behind would actually have a use? Just a thought.
Mel as far as MOT goes if its not there they can not fail it, nothing to inspect but the fact you left the middle seat belt there might be an issue . i was surprised while you had the seat apart you didn't take it out
@@BigVanSmallWorld Does your V5 say 2 or 3 seats? If it doesn't specify either then get rid of the seatbelt and hopefully that will keep them happy 🙂👍🚐
You sew as well Mel omg what an excellent job it looks really nice and as you said great storage for your electrics you could put your diesel heater in there.Great idea to do that glad to see your making progress xxx
I really liked that! I've been wondering what it would look like if you took half the seat off, and now I know. You're like a proper McGyver, Mel, and it's so much fun to watch your videos. Don't ever stop just being you on camera - you have that certain likeability factor and you're really good at talking people through the steps of each process. As for yellow screws, I'd never even heard of them so that was very good info too. Great stuf! 😊
Oh I have been wanting to do this since I took the van on a few years ago! Now I know it can be done I just need to get the bottle to get it done. Thank you.
Last Transit I worked on I fitted a pair of Ford Mondeo seats in it out of a crashed motor, cost was £120 for the pair but well worth it, far less hassle than the conversion you've done, I did have to change a few little bits on it but ended up with electrically adjustable and heated!
When I suggested to the bloke in the camper workshop who fitted my windows that I'd do this to my Renault Trafic I fitted out he said it wouldn't pass an MoT. Obviously can be done!
Thanks Mel so much for this video. I have done similar to my van seats now, only i removed the outer passenger seat. One other difference is that i cut thru the metal with an electric hacksaw - no sparks at all, so I might advise others doing this to use one of these. I would add a pic here but i don't think its possible/I don't know how to. So thanks again for your video. Cheers and Happy New Year. ☺️
Yes well i don't have an angle grinder whereas i do have the electric saw - bought for getting small branches off trees, so it was luck in the form of using what i already had. I wasn't at all sure it would cut thru but it did - easily! Yipee.
Get a drivers seat from a left hand drive van. One thing you need to do if you are going to use it all year is a bulk head that's at least 1.5" thick and full of insulation. An opening with a curtain during the day and a "PLUG" you can place in at night the same thickness aa the bulk head. The drivers area on s van gets very cold. The vans heater also is a wast of time if your trying to keep the van warm without a bulk head.
We did this to our Renault master, your sewing is better than mine!! Well done. Why would anyone want to go outside to come back in again?? Love ur vids. Our plan is to get a swivel chair one day.
Love your humour and sense of storytelling Mel - can;t wait to see the van build and your DIY approach - we removed our double seat to fit a double swivel and that yellow cable is a friggin' pain!!
Hey Mel, I have the same problem in my sprinter....This is a cheap and acceptable solution! I didn't think of this but I would prefer some nice comfy bucket seats but boy are they expensive!!!
Thanks for positive feedback I’m so pleased I did this as not only do I now have a way of getting into the living space I also keep the storage space under the seat it’s a win win 👍
Thanks for this vid Mel. I've been thinking of doing this to my double seat but was a bit worried about the structure of the seat. Now you've shown me I'm all set to go once I've sorted my table. V many thanks :) :)
Great stuff Mel, I was a little worried about how it would look, but you pulled it off, also thanks for the tip about the yellow plugs, I didn't know that, so I am happy that you strongly emphasised the issues of not disconnecting the battery. I am looking forward to seeing more on this conversion.. Greg Virgo will be looking over his shoulder :-)
Hi Mel, a particularly great video, because of doing this innovative and pioneering job, from your own original thought; no one else including me has had this idea. When you first told us about doing this I thought it was ridiculous, but how wrong I was, because what you've achieved here is a great solution and with not much difficulty either. I think it will be ok for the MOT, because I can't see why it should'nt be. Very well done Me, congratulations! from Alan, in Norwich.
Mel, looks mint, as regards to the mot, if there is no belt, it should not be classed as a seat, if you remove the seatbelt you will put the airbag light on, however I will email you the solution to turn this off for pence.
Nice job Mel. I've still got the full box under my 1 & 1/2 seat , part of it is a toolbox with lift up lid between the seats, the rest is under the passenger seat and used to house all the Ambulance electrics. We wondered about putting the leisure battery in there, but it wasn't quite big enough for the battery we ended up with, but will get used for things that might get dirty, so we don't want in the other storage areas - like hook up cable, water fill pipe and levelling ramps etc.
Great job Mel, the stitching looks pretty good mate, for MOT purposes, they might say that its "half a seat" with no back rest or seat belt in place = maybe just get rid of the padded seat base bit so it looks like a storage/housing box and not half a seat?
Thank you I’m not sure if it’s allowed in Australia but in the uk we can do pretty much anything we want but I’d still rather be in Oz really starting to miss Queensland 👍🤓👍
You might want to change the number of seats on the V5 when you next send it, but don't worry too much. My van was registered new with 3 seats when it only had 2! I got that sorted this year. I have more of a crouch and crawl-through on my van.
Nice one Mel. One bit of advice about the grinder is don't over tighten it with the spanner otherwise you have difficulty getting it off again later. Look forward to the next video. Best wishes.
