For me, it's either the couch that slides forward into a bed or the drop-down ceiling bed. No way I'm dismantling & assembling stuff daily. Thanks for putting this compilation of bed ideas together. Cheers..
One super cool option I saw in another van build video was the jackknife couch, which is a super elegant and fast folding mechanism to convert a couch into a bed. Also, I've never seen any van builds with an inflatable mattress, but they are super compact when deflated.
Yeah I've seen a few jackknife builds lately too. A great alternative to the bench seat that folds/extends into a bed. Another idea similar to an inflatable mattress is a Japanese futon. Ideal for those who wish to retain a large floor area in their van.
Thank you for this! WOW! Husband and I are building a van and trying to figure out how to build our bed(s). This will be a big help, can’t wait to show it to him. Thank you for putting all this together!
Thank you for the video. Some fantastic designs... I agree with lots of points here. Personally it feels like the more you RV, a descent kitchen and a toilet/shower could be acceptable by the most people as long as it is functional and feels well done. On the other hand the three elements: 1-Bed, 2-Sitting/living/dining space 3-Storage space varies by needs, by a lot. Factors such as being a full-timer(s) vs. occasional RVer, or being a single, couple, with kids, pets... being active with lots of gear, people who can get homesick quick(nothing wrong with it!) and prefers "homey" feeling. Or the ones who demand; "I need a proper, office like space, while drinking my coffee and sitting down with my book/laptop pretty much every morning!" types, etc... To people who are going into RVing, I suggest them to monitor their moods during morning and right before the bed hours. These are the moments when we are the most tired or energized in general. Our demands peak and we're not as flexible with ourselves during those times. Another point is Rving is being flexible by itself. You just have to. Basically, it's a moving-living space that is limited by the road lane width… Anyways, enjoy the view out there!
Very wise words! Yeah, you really need to know yourself and not what you wish you would do or think you would do when RVing. True! It's all so individual.. Thank you! :)
Amaaaazing! this is my kind of nerdery :) Thank you. I can see how unhappy I would be to reach any stage of exhaustion and not have a bed already set up. Or 2 in the afternoon, loafing in a national park, and looking to lie down for a 1 hour nap aaaaand... setting up a bed for the privilege. Ewwww. Even more than that, I can't imagine waking up on a cold morning, poorly slept, and having to executive function my way into putting my bed away before having a place to sit and work. It's fixed for me! Thank you so much for this comprehensive review.
THE LIFT BED IN A 170 IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE OPTION. THE ONE TOWARDS THE END WITH ALL THE WINDOWS THAT SHOWS THE SINK AND COOKTOP, THAT ONE IS PROBABLY MY FAV. THANKS FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!
@@JNYC-gb1pp I think it was either a DIY or an Eno, that was a few years ago. I slept in my DIY for several months just recently while I was on night shift.
I tried a hammock but I have one bad knee so getting out was almost impossible without help. I am due for knee surgery this fall and may try a hammock again next summer when back at full strength.
Another bed option not mentioned is two twin beds (or two sofas during the day) with a walkway in between, leading to a rear bathroom, like in one of the Travado models. (The kitchen sits right behind the driver seat.) We chose the basic fixed bed for three reasons -- 1. the massive garage underneath in which we can fit a double inflatable kayak, two bikes, chairs, outside table, etc.; 2. we prefer not to make and unmake the bed each day; and 3. with a separate sofa & table area up front, it works better when one of us goes to bed early or sleeps in later. Thanks for the video.
Oh right, I didn"t see that one yet, thanks! But yeah, if you got the space in the vehicle for other "hang out areas" and want lots of storage, a fixed bed is the way to go! :)
I’ve spent a lot of time researching van layouts and actually hadn’t seen a couple of these options. I may have to modify my design a bit. Thanks for making this one! 👍
Something I rarely see in these things is non double beds. Twin beds are a reasonable size and you can comfortably sleep on them. Could save a good amount of space if you want a fixed bed 😅
This was fantastic for ideas - thank you! Could I also ask you to leave each picture up for a few seconds as it flew by so fast I had to keep rewinding to see what they’ve done, and also to link each video to the original creator so we can see how they did it please? Thanks so much, great job! 😃
I have hated our van build since we built it with a friend who was set on the design. The fixed bed going all the way from the back doors and about 6 inches into the middle door has always driven me crazy. I am very likely going to tear it out and redo it combining a couple of these (yours and one or two others) to make our 144 sprinter be much more comfortable to live in for two of us and a dog. Thank you for comparing all of these. I definitely agree with your rating scale! Thank you!
Oh no.. yeah that just eats up lots of space... especially in a short sprinter for 2.5 peeps. Glad you got some ideas from this! :) Good luck on the bed remodel!
If the mattress is a also the seat cushions, I can imagine just sitting on the bed with a table that is over it a few inches. That saves the hassle of taking it apart and stowing the linens. Also, am loving the idea of a bed that drops down from the ceiling! Could have a platform below it to hang out on when bed is raised. Great video!
I'm looking for a bed in the front of the van. Over the seats (not on the seats) a 2 person bed that is either a manual lift and latch or an electric lift. I want to have an art studio space in the back.
Amazing video, really enjoyed it. That ding though at each option killed my ears. Would appreciate more consistent audio mixing, but other than that, very impressed, thanks :)
The ultimate van bed is obviously a pop-top so long as your not camping along a freeway or in extreme weather conditions mainly really hot weather. See ModVans examples.
Only having to provide sleeping area for one person provides some different options. I have a 6' bench/sofa behind the driver seat. Want to sleep or nap? Just take off the back cushion, set aside, and done. Otherwise during the day its a great place to sit and look out the slider.
Nicely done I think you covered all the options, including the one we are doing east west, futon style at the back convertible. On a Renault master with not too much extra head room.
Thank you lisa for such an AWESOME summary of so many possible bed options! I have also been watching VAN videos for the past two years for inspiration :D. I want to convert a small van (5.4m in length), and came up with an idea of how I want to do the bed to maximise space. And I always felt it was weird that I had not seen anyone actually build the bed that way in any of the hundreds videos I've watched :D. And suddenly here it is! The nr 3 on your list. So nice to see it actually being built and so nice you had linked to the original video so that I could even get even more inspiration on how to actually build it. Kudos!
I building a fixed horizontal bed for the max storage underneath. Two Mtb’s Two oversized, off-road spare tires for the van. A hitch mounted winch for front or rear of van that stores inside with all associated recovery gear. Plus two large drawers in the center that open into the living space.
I think im going to go for a more japanese style layout, meaning, doing alot of things on the floor so that I can utilize as much of the floor space as possible for whatever might arise. Maybe a Japanese style dinner table with cushions around it for the chairs. Then the table can do something foldy and modular somewhere when not in need or use. I also need a desk area to make mysic and edit video. And room to stretch and what not too. Thinking I'll have alot of very narrow furniture that won't impede the main space much st all for things like the kitchenette and storage. Hidden luggage loo with a hidden fridge near the front maybe? And if I ever actually need the van to transport anything large ish, I can also use it for that. Keep it as useful in as many different ways as possible. Multi functionally modular and whatnot lol.
Wow, that sounds super interesting! And makes lots of sense, too! Really awakens the engineer/architect in someone! I'ld be so curious to see your build or your final sketch!
i had a sprinter with 2 6 foot double beds , one was a murphy king size and one was a bench where the front was on hinges and flipped up with legs ( supported me and my wife and kids ( 25/26 yo) when sat on just the flap up part that,s prob just over 600 lb , and all wood no metal , the bench stored the batteries inverter bedding and toilet, i have yet to see some one make one like it in 10 years of watching you tube videos on van builds.Just about to buy another van if i make the same bed i will make a video of it for you :-)
Hi there! Amazing collection, thanks for creating it! I cant find the Vertical Hybrid Extension video in your description, could you please share it?! (where the whole back of the couch becomes the bed's lower foot part!) Thanks 😊
Are not all beds horizontal? From a vertical bed you would fall out... I would call them sleep across and sleep alongside. But what do I know. I am not native english speaker...
Haha that is a good point! I guess it depends on how you look at it (I was looking at it from above when the van is vertical). Across and alongside would probably have been easier to understand, but I"m not a native speaker as well.
Why have I never seen the fixed horizontal bed with a garage underneath but in the front of the van ? I'm thinking about that because I want to install a bike rack underneath the bed and my bikes are too long for the width of the bed. What am I missing here ? I've been searching for a couple of days and I couldn't find anyone that did this layout there must be a reason...
Mmh, a garage under the bed but in the front of the van? That would be hard to get to and the sliding door would be just to open the garage it seems like - or do I understand your idea wrong here?
I have another lift idea that I think should work - Why do we want to have a bed blocking our head space while awake, why not instead have a couch "blocking" our head space while we are sleeping so we don't need it anyway. In other words, not the bed moves down, but the platform with couch moves up... revealing a bed under it.This would be less cramped during the day because even if the resulting head clearance may be more or less the same, the ceiling is clean and you don't see the bed at all.
Very comprehensive video, but you glossed over the twin bed design like in the Travato 59K. This has some distinct advantages. Like single travelers can keep one side made up as a dedicated bed and the other side as a sitting area. Or being able to have a comfortable mattress without any seams (even couples if they're willing to sleep separately).
You're right - it is super practical! But everyone is a bit different there. I personally would feel weird to sleep separately. But for single travellers it's definitely great!
Thanks! I`m not 100% sure if that's the one you mean, but I think it's this one: ua-cam.com/video/QrgLfW1fj0M/v-deo.html let me know the time stamp if that's not it. :)
Very interesting good video. I like the bed that goes up and down because I like the bed always made up and ready however I also like the garage space for bikes and other stuff. So do we have to get a bigger van or a truck or just accept a little discomfort in the name of freedom ?........and money of course !
Can someone say why NO ONE puts the kitchen in the back and bed by the entrance. for me it doesn't make sense to sleep over the Electrical system, I much rather have all the Fridge+electrical at the back and have a bench/bed/office at the front
That's a good point, I think in the UK more people prefer your set up, as far as I've seen. The other argument would be that when you mainly use the sliding door to get in and out, you're immediately in the bedroom, so opening the door to a kitchen feels less intimate. That's how I feel about it. But I get your point!
Hi, great content! But next time, could you avoid using all the cut offs and dings, it makes it jerky without continuity. I kept fast forwarding to get thru it to hit highlights because it was too difficult to watch.
The links are all in the description. Not ideally sorted, but they are there. If you 're looking for a very specific video, let me know the time stamp and I'll find it. :)
No body talks about or shows the person sleeping on the back door side needing to use the bathroom and crawling over their partner! I’m def a ready made person, and drop down in a seating area! And a end of van bath rm! Shaiden vans…
I have been surprised everyone seems to be okay with sleeping on a split-up mattress. I had one split in half down the middle and one of us would often wake up in the gap.. also some of these designs are excellent birth control, since you'll avoid having sex entirely
Hahaha... I agree, a split mattress is not always ideal - there it's just really important that they're super tight and don't move. Then you shouldn't sink into the gap.
After watching many, many build videos I think my personal favorite so far has been the one used by RP in their Rebellion 4x4. It gives plenty of room to sleep, it's not claustrophobic at all, it allows either person to leave the bed without crawling over the other, it provides a decent dinette option, you could leave the bed permanently set up if desired, it provides good access to the roof, and it accommodates a large garage beneath. The only catch is that they've used the super high roof option for the Sprinter, which isn't widely available. But if I ever get the opportunity to do my own build I'm almost certain to follow that basic layout. ua-cam.com/video/HDUqQFLZCJI/v-deo.html
For me, it's either the couch that slides forward into a bed or the drop-down ceiling bed. No way I'm dismantling & assembling stuff daily.
Thanks for putting this compilation of bed ideas together.
Cheers..
Same here, haha. Way too stressful. You're very welcome! :)
you were great, our family slept 7 in a toyota hiace - slightly extended, overlapping sleeping designs. 6 Months around europe. best time in my life

I would love to see a hammock incorporated into the design. I slept exclusively in a hammock for almost a year, loved it.
Right, I had great experiences with hammock sleeps too! A great solution for single dwellers for sure! Go for it! :)
What kind did you sleep on? I'm assuming it was comfortable if you did it for a year.
@@JNYC-gb1pp I think it was either a DIY or an Eno, that was a few years ago. I slept in my DIY for several months just recently while I was on night shift.

Very good selection of beds for Motorhome. Thank you, I appreciate it very much.
If you’re here because of the title, skip forward to 5:58 because that’s the first time you’ll actually see an option
This was great coverage of a very important topic. Thank you!
This is the best "Bed" option ever!!! I am going to help spread the word on this one. Well done.

I'm feeling good that you came to the same conclusion I did! Whoohoo. Van design can be stressful lol
Oh it sure is.. haha. Hope you have some nice progress though!
Where’s the link to the another favorite one with the vertical flip up bench back to bed?
Sorryyyyy, but I don´t have the infos anymore which one is which link. It is somehwere in the videos linked below though. :)
Didn’t think of the bunk bed option, if the van I get is tall enough it’s definitely an option
Amazing video, really enjoyed it. That ding though at each option killed my ears. Would appreciate more consistent audio mixing, but other than that, very impressed, thanks :)
So glad you did, thanks! And yeah, sorry about the ding! Definitely learned my lesson with these.. :)

The best van bed compilation I have seen. Great!

I building a fixed horizontal bed for the max storage underneath.

A hitch mounted winch for front or rear of van that stores inside with all associated recovery gear.

So sorry, I don´t have all the infos anymore which exact one is which link. It is somehwere in the videos linked below though.
Do you have the video of "an interesting vertical bunk/bench", around 13:41? I cannot find that video link.. Thank you!

Where are fix twin beds always ready?
Maravilloso ❤
I'ld be so curious to see your build or your final sketch!
did you ever build it or sketch it out?
Thanks fo this compilation works a lot!
Excellent content, awesome. Thank you.
i had a sprinter with 2 6 foot double beds , one was a murphy king size and one was a bench where the front was on hinges and flipped up with legs ( supported me and my wife and kids ( 25/26 yo) when sat on just the flap up part that,s prob just over 600 lb , and all wood no metal , the bench stored the batteries inverter bedding and toilet, i have yet to see some one make one like it in 10 years of watching you tube videos on van builds.Just about to buy another van if i make the same bed i will make a video of it for you :-)
Hi Lisa, cool video. You have missed people with the bed over the cab of a Luton van.
Thanks! And yes, I mainly focused on regular vans, but you're right - those are a great option, too if the vehicle permits. :)
Excellent topic and video, just what I was looking for
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative ! ................ Easy watch !............ Thanks : }
Great content but please next time do not use that ding notice throughout the video please
Thank you! I already finished the next video, but I turned the volume of the ding WAY down - hope that's better!
I just watched this with headphones. Ding bad.
So annoying!! But great video haha
I for one love the ding.. More Ding please 😃
I'm an editor and didn't mind the ding at all. You'll always get someone hating something. Maybe just a volume thing more than a ding thing? 🤷♂️
All beds are horizontal. :) No such thing as a vertical bed. That would be standing up. I think you mean, parallel vs perpendicular. Cheers!
Hehe, well yes in normal terms it doesn't exist, but in terms of a van build planning I was looking at it like at a layout, birds eye view :)
Great video. Really makes you think what is best for me. Thank you.
You're so pretty 😍 and informative ! great video btw !
Thank you! :)
I like the lift bed so I can have a living and dining set below
Hi there! Amazing collection, thanks for creating it! I cant find the Vertical Hybrid Extension video in your description, could you please share it?! (where the whole back of the couch becomes the bed's lower foot part!) Thanks 😊
Very welcome! Glad you like it! :) I think you mean this one, right? ua-cam.com/video/KwcowOqSzbc/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Eamon%26Bec
exactly this one, thanks so much, really appreciate it!!! 😊😊😊
Fantastic!
Vertical is ground to sky. Horizontal is like the horizon. I see you are not native speaker. But all beds are horizontal. :)
Love the video, but the dings drove me nutz!
Sorry, I knoww.. I wish I could just change that..
Never seen that anywhere, but surely should work! Go for it! :D
awesome video! thank you!
Glad it helped :)

The other argument would be that when you mainly use the sliding door to get in and out, you're immediately in the bedroom, so opening the door to a kitchen feels less intimate. That's how I feel about it. But I get your point!
Where do is get the beds
Most of them are DIY
Thanks 😊
17 minutes just talking about van beds 😂, so for a full tiny van house idea would last like 1 hour, nice video

You're adorable 😍
Haha, my designs are still undiscovered and waiting for me to build (likely many years from now)!
Uh, sweet - sounds like a revolutionary idea!
@@lisasomewhere88 maybe in my mind, but its is very close to some displayed here, with more overhead and under storage.
Heya! Good video, new sub ☘️
Thank you! :)
damn i am NOT making my bed every night
Hi, great content! But next time, could you avoid using all the cut offs and dings, it makes it jerky without continuity. I kept fast forwarding to get thru it to hit highlights because it was too difficult to watch.

we need links for these.. :/
True, that can be an issue with a horizontal bed design for sure...
No sound here
Don't be fooled.. This girl is smart like a fox....

"Sleep horizontally?" How does one sleep vertically? 🤷♂️
That's in terms of the vans direction, seen from a planning perspective. vertically meaning along the long side of the vehicle. :)
sleep deprivation
@@DaCrazyJalapeno Cool, cool, cool.

Oi tudo bem abraço
Belle video malheureusement pas en français
Pardon y merci
Abed is recreation and sleep.
Elevator bed
I have been surprised everyone seems to be okay with sleeping on a split-up mattress. I had one split in half down the middle and one of us would often wake up in the gap.. also some of these designs are excellent birth control, since you'll avoid having sex entirely
Hahaha... I agree, a split mattress is not always ideal - there it's just really important that they're super tight and don't move. Then you shouldn't sink into the gap.
Ok, now im totally confused. Lol
Appreciate the video - but my ears are ringing now from all the loud bells!
Sorry about that!! Wish I could change it now...
But if I ever get the opportunity to do my own build I'm almost certain to follow that basic layout.

nice overview, but I downvoted you because of the annoying "ring bell"s
