  • A lot of kids are judged for their inability to speak correct English. Esha Manwani couldn't speak English until she was 15. How is she giving this TEDx Talk today? A proactive, self-motivated woman who has worked as Senior Lead - Brand Collaborations, Terribly Tiny Tales; Partnerships and Strategic Alliances Manager, Housing.com; Content Associate, Zomato; Account Executive, Hanmer MSL and Junior Staff Writer, Haymarket Sac Publishing India, only to quit all of those and get into a business of hers. With a passion for literature, she has beautifully drawn a parallel between her personal relationships and her career in her talk at TEDxSayajigunj. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I don't know why it felt so connected to me. Feels like that's the same I had to go through my life.
When I was 12 , I had to give a speech on 'Importance of Discipline for Student' on stage in an annual program. When I went to stage, I couldn't speak more than two words "Respected teachers...". I was dumbstruck. I wasn't able to think of a single word apart from 'discipline'. Actually I added two more words, "thank you".
And rest the same story as she.
Watched UA-cam videos, english news, movies, read english novels, magazines, newspaper, junior classes books, dictionary or anything I found out written in english, even advertisements and papers I got from street food vendors.
Last year in college I was co-host of our Annual Program in which I had to speak completely in english.
I did well. At least that's what I thought. But friends came to me and asked me how my english was so good!?
I was totally perplexed and amazed.
I couldn't know how english words came so natural to me as if I was putting no effort in it.
But as they say "It is only hard till you don't know it".
    God Bless
    Thank you for sharing.

So, I met this guy and while we were talking I mispronounced a word. I was a little embarrassed because I knew I was using the word in the right context but couldn't pronounce it, before I could say anything he stared started saying something. "You know a cool thing, it's weird how people look down upon other people who mispronounce words, the only way you can actually know when you use a word without pronouncing it when you've actually read it. You don't look down upon people who read "

The girl really nailed it. Point is not to be best but best version of you. Accept your flaws and donot be ashamed of. It's okay not to speak good or fluent english. Intelligence can't be measured by a language.

  • @jobansandhu
    @jobansandhu 6 років тому +91

This was an exceptional speech by a girl who has embraced herself and her flaws.
I, too, owe my fluency and command over english to all those English movies out there - starting from "The fast and the furious " to award winning films such as "Everest" OR "Wilson".
The point is, if you have the will to do or learn something, you CAN do it.
And as they say - "Self-education is the best Education"

I know right. Well it was a bit different for me, I lived in USA until I was 6 and I didn't know any other language except for English so to be able to speak with others I realised I needed to learn hindi( FYI I was living in Ahmedabad at the time). At the same time whenever I watched cartoons pretty much all of them were in hindi and I started watching bollywood as well. It took some time but I now know hindi well enough, and can speak fluently, albeit with a bollywood accent(thanks to the film's). I also have a passion for outer space related sciences and I pretty much learnt everything I know about space from books and UA-cam channels.

I am so happy someone made this video. I have been facing same difficulty and humiliation to this day. I studied throughout in Gujarati medium and we didn't have English till 5th class. In school I was not humiliated since whole school had region medium and I was getting very high score in English as secondary language. I was so proud but then I started working came to South India and here I saw level of English people were speaking. I started watching UA-cam videos and listening to podcast to improve my English. People in my office made so much fun of my English and use to say that I talk like a child. I don't speak professional. My grammar was ok, I was articulating right sentences but I did not have rich vocabulary. I am still working on myself but the biggest disappointment is that we don't see English as language, we see it as mesure of intelligence.

All the best to you. My opinion on English being treated as a measure of intelligence is that it should be treated as both because it is no easy task to learn english and be able to speak and use grammar fluently, especially when you have to learn another one as well(>insert mother tongue

English is just another language. It's mostly matter of practice not any intelligence. Stop giving it so much importance. People eventually get along and achieve heights of success if they are talented and whether or not they speak fluent English.

Sis....your speech was very good. I liked watching it, seems like, you got the grip over the language. I think that you had a hard time through them. The feeling which you told for that tiny girl you described is obvious, and I can understand it. There was once a time, where I googled through UA-cam to get command over my language, I was not satisfied. Some had good prounciation , some had voice modulating techniques, but never got a feeling that I am not alone e in this world. Thanks a lot.......
