Hi! I'm Russian native speaker, so this is my list of aspects of Russian accent in English: 1) strong 'r' sound, like in Spanish. 2) 'v' sound instead of 'w' like velkom, not welcome. 3) strong 't' without 'h' sound (or aspiration), like in many other European languages. 4) voiced consonants become voiceless in the end of the word, like sat instead of sad, ret - red. Also, it's difficult for to pronounce the sound 'ng', like in morning, so usually it sounds like moRninK. (facepalm). 5) 'th' sound, like in 'theatre', or 'that' becomes 'S' or 'F' and 'Z' sound: sieter, fieter, zet, ze, zous, etc. 6) In Russian we have 'Ы' sound - it's like 'i' sound, but very rude. It's always followed by the hard sound. But in English 'J'-sound is light, so sometimes Russian pronounced the word 'jeanse' like jЫnse.
My Russian opinion on Russian accent with all respect to Gareth. 1. Russians CAN say English soft 'r'. We don't say it like Gareth says. 2. Russians don't speak deeper or slower. The key features are different. 3. Russians pronounce ALL consonants clearly. If you want to speak with Russian accent pronounce ALL consonants. That is how our own language works. Example. The word 'try' an English speaking person would say [ch-r-y]. Russians would say literally [t-r-y]. The same with the word, for example, 'interesting'. We don't say [i-n-ch-e-r-e-s-t-i-n-g] we say [i-n-t-e-r-e-s-t-i-n-g]. 'Tr' doesn't sound like 'chr' with Russian accent. 'Meet you' is not [m-ee-ch-you], it is literally [m-ee-t you] as 'meat you'. 4. Another example of pronouncing consonants would be 't' sound. Russians always pronounce the 't'. For example, in 'passport'. English speaking person would not say strong 't' at the end of the word 'passport'. It would be something more like a half of 't'. Very soft. Russians would say 't' at the end fully and clearly. Try to say 'city' as if 't' from the word 'tower'. 5. Indeed most of the time Russians say 'w' as 'v'. But not always. Hard to explain because there is no general rule here. Sometimes Russians say 'w' as 'w' not 'v'. 6. 'H' with Russian accent is more like 'kh' but softer. Example, in 'have' h is very soft. Almost like breathing. Russian version of 'h' in 'have' sound more like 'khave'. 7. Russian speaking person would say 'Taxes' as a USA state and 'taxes' as paying duty for government similarly. Sounds more like 'Taxes' as state. 8. Russians cannot say 'mountain' as [m-o-u-n-t-n]. It is more like [m-o-u-n-t-ee-n] 9. There are a lot more but... THE KEY FEATURE is to pronounce all consonants clearly. Here is an example. ua-cam.com/video/xks7xtwhRY8/v-deo.html

To the natives complaining: of course you can pick out a fake accent when you grew up with Russian yourself. For English speakers it sounds pretty convincing :P
How it sounds for english people when a russian tries to talk english : cyka cyka cyka blyat vodka is good how russians think that they pronounced : Hello my name is Vladimir
The whole point, I believe, is to help people gain a very generic "accent," for such things as acting, or perhaps for helping to learn a new language. It's not going to be perfect, of course, but this guy is pretty damn good at what he does. I don't think he's a loser. In fact, these small "lessons" have helped me immensely, so I have to give the guy props for helping me. :)
Russian accent is really simple. The video only shows the more Hollywood-esque Russian accent and doesn't touch all the unique sounds. Something like ''probably'' with a Russian accent turns into ''prroba-бля''.
prroba-blya? I guess that's close, but it would probably be more like prroh-bob-lee-ye. It's hard to sound that out with the alphabet lol. They tend to do a short (barely noticable) "yeh" with their "ee" sounds. Not always though, I would suspect it changes based on where exactly they're from. The R is rolled (almost sounds like a D sometimes), and O's are usually deep.
I think it depends on what Slavic country and area within you’re from. Personally I’ve never heard any of my Russian friends use a Z sound for a th but I’m sure they do somewhere!
+RhythmAddictedState Well, I have heard several Russian people speak in English on various videos in the past, and they do in fact sound more or less like this. Seriously, look up any Russian speaker on some random UA-cam video and you WILL hear traces of this accent.
Laurelindo I certainly know what my own language sounds like, and what he is trying to emulate doesn't even remotely come close to what it actually sounds like. Countless times have I heard Russian people speak English - they don't sound like this, and if there are any similarities, I wouldn't even call them "traces". This video made me cringe really hard because of its professional setting and because of the guy's overconfident vibe, although he clearly fails doing this properly. He just does a very poor imitation of what people stereotypically think Russian sounds like. I'm sorry if I come off a bit too harsh, but even though it might sound plausible to you or foreigners, it clearly looks like a terrible attempt from a native speaker's perspective (maybe even from a non-native standpoint). His accent is still blatantly English. I'm kinda disappointed since he claims to be a voice actor (and I usually have huge admiration for voice actors or any job that requires mastering your voice). Sorry for the long post, hehe :)
+RhythmAddictedState They may not sound exactly like they guy in this video, but I do feel that he pronounces the parts of the Russian accent and overdo them, so that he is somewhat accurate on some level but also exaggerates it. Anyway, have you ever heard the accent of the mathematician Edward Frenkel? What are your opinions on his accent? As far as I know, he was born in Russia, and I would say that he has got a highly distinct Russian accent.
Laurelindo He's got a Russian accent, definitely, but it's pretty mellow compared to what you can hear. It's actually pleasing to listen to because it's not extremely obvious. He must be one of those guys who moved from Russia to the US in his early 20's and stayed there for a very long time, and he obviously knows what American English is supposed to sound like, because he pronounces the words correctly (whereas a regular Russian wouldn't speak with the correct intonation or wouldn't know what some words should sound like). He speaks English at a native level and with an almost native intonation but Edward Frenkel has a legitimate Russian accent, although it's quite tame. :)
+RhythmAddictedState This is a ridiculous cartoon accent. As a Russian speaking Brit who has lived and worked in Russia for a decade, the only people who speak with an accent like this are foreign actors doing a stereotypical accent based on villans from old james bond films
"L" is pronounced wrong. It should be pronounced without any nosal sound. And everything doesn't have to be slowed down. It sounds like you're drunk. But russians are not always drunk!! P.s. I'm a russian with a b2 English level
Nice, I am Polish with a b2 english level and I'm sad that most videos are about the Russian accent and not about our accent. I mean, I just want to hear what are the stereotypes of how people think we speak. It's not that surprising tho cuz many people from countries further away like USA may not even know Poland exists.
I'm speaking Russian and this video made me giggle. Quite accurate! Good think I got rid of my russian accent, but it's still fun to talk with it sometimes. Very good job there ;)
1. Make ‘l’ sound like in ‘pull’ (Lovely lemon Lind) 2. V’s and W’s combine sound (Vhat is vong vith Vrussion vater) 3. Z & S replace Th (Zis is the last one) 4. Elongate syllabus/ slower (Bro-ther) 5. (Optional) Deep, Monotone Voice
его акцент какой-то чересчур киношный. лично я и все мои знакомые из универа, в т.ч. профессора говорят почти на абсолютно чистом американском английском с поправкой на более "твердые" твердые звуки (это не ошибка)
I’m Canadian and I can do several accents almost too well, I don’t know what my true accent is, but the one accent I can’t do well is Russian. Thanks for the tips
Tim Kurb So that means that he is Russian? Oh wait, you are black? You must be from fucking Nigeria man. You were born and raised in US? Ah you are still just one more black dude from Kenya.

I'm sorry for him, it's become kind of trend when we joined UE.
Did you listen to what he said beforehand, he stated this is just a generic general Hollywood type accent, Russia is a big mass of land and so many accents exists in russia, he was simply imitating a generic Russian accent
Wow that's a whole lot of bollocks. This exact approach to Russian accent is why it's never done right in the western films (unless they actually employ native Russian speakers to portray Russian characters, which I think they should).. the accent he's doing sounds painfully fake and so cliche, like a Hollywood flick from the 80's..
@@aolosfios he said at the start that this wasn't how Russians actually sounded and that a real Russian would tell in an instant that it was fake. The point was for it to be an over the top James bond villain style accent if I'm not mistaken.
The way he pronounces "v" is pretty accurate. As for "w", it's half of the time "v" and half of the time more of a shortened "u". The thing with "l" is it's not the only one. You don't have the distinction of soft and hard consonants in English. In Russian we have the distinction between soft (palatalized) and hard (non-palatalized) consonants - a soft sound, to give you some perspective, would be German "l", or Spanish "ñ". Feel free to add softened consonants before "i" and "e".
Austroby A stereotype is defined as "A generalization based upon a localized norm in regards to race, etc..." So... Yeah. It's probably stereotypical because most Russians actually do speak English like that.
Ryan Cooper No they don't. Russians sound wayyy different when they speak English than Russian. They realize that it's a whole different sound because we learn some English in school. So to achieve the effect, they soften all their previously hard consonants and probably think they nailed it but end up sounding a bit too soft like. Just listen to a Russian speak. Please don't learn from a non Russian.
Katya Lastovkin yes they do. I've heard countless Russians and the majority sound like the guy in this video. Most Russians only want to learn English and do not care for the accent (or grammar for the most part)
nah....nobody in Russia speaks like: ZE BEST COUNTRY of VORLD IZ AMERIKA I mean some old people (50+) talks like this, cuz they learned English in USSR .But now in schools or universities u cant hear that.
I am Russian and I hope I dont speak with noticeable Russian accent when I speak English. When I listen to people who have really heavy Russian accent when they speak English, I am quickly annoyed by their pronounciation
+Kate Senatskaya Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm Polish and a lot of people that speak English here have that specific kind of accent... it's like Russian accent, but at least Russian accent can be funny, Polish accent sound like you're butchering the language. :/
If you're Russian it is very likely that you have an Russian accent. You might not notice it, when you speak with people of your kind, however, as soon as you speak with native English speakers your accent will become apparent.
Alesha Gaines Are you American by any chance...? Noting "racist" about, just that most Poles or people that have Polish blood that live in America are probably also born in America and learn English since their birth, so I wouldn't have been surprised if their English sounds pretty good out there. Ask Poles that live in Poland, and I think a lot of them would have that weird bad accent.
yeah, it's small % of eastern european accents, people are mostly trying to learn american/ british accent to not sound like guy on the video. it's super awkward and kinda funny to hear someone talking like that
Loved this video but this is not a Russian accent) That's what you would hear in the Hollywood movies. Lots of russians have amazing english and they do not sound like that at all =-)
Liliya Saffina I'm Australian and when I speak in Russian my friend says it's just inaudible ear rape (he's Russian) but after this she says she can kind of hear Russian which is better
In Moscow, we would not pronounce all "a" like "u". We would say "buh-lah-laika". That's for non-Russians to know, since there are no accents, but dialects.
Being a Russian, I may say that the most important thing in it is the last part about low and monotone manner of speaking. At least when I heard that I said "yes man, it's very alike"
It depends on our nationality. In Russia there are 200 nationalities. I am an ethnic Bashkir. Pronunciation of the Bashkir language is similar to English. Although the majority of Russian people have a terrible accent and it's true.Pronunciation of the Russian language is not very similar to English.
+IMDMOTCM Pronunciation of azerbaijan language is also simular to English. That is really strange. But Azerbaijan accent is clother to american one, than to british. But is is interesting, that i have some Persian origin and my accent sounds simular... ...to scottish.))

Lolблять.
Not really, it will be like "prrobablee". There is no reason for "lya" sound to be there.
you know what бля mean shit. right?

Slav here. Not Zis is, rather "Dis iz" We don't have "th" sounds.
Russians often say 'zis'
I think it depends on what Slavic country and area within you’re from. Personally I’ve never heard any of my Russian friends use a Z sound for a th but I’m sure they do somewhere!
I suppose it depends on the placement in the word too, right? So for example the th in “with” will sound more like a z
I'm Russian and all I can say is: LMAO.
+RhythmAddictedState
Well, I have heard several Russian people speak in English on various videos in the past, and they do in fact sound more or less like this.
+RhythmAddictedState
They may not sound exactly like they guy in this video, but I do feel that he pronounces the parts of the Russian accent and overdo them, so that he is somewhat accurate on some level but also exaggerates it.

@Communist I think it's more because we're afraid to make a lot of mistakes and often check mentally if we're able to say what we want properly.
Nice, I am Polish with a b2 english level and I'm sad that most videos are about the Russian accent and not about our accent. I mean, I just want to hear what are the stereotypes of how people think we speak. It's not that surprising tho cuz many people from countries further away like USA may not even know Poland exists.

Kinda why he said it’s a generic movie accent
Did you listen to what he said beforehand, he stated this is just a generic general Hollywood type accent, Russia is a big mass of land and so many accents exists in russia, he was simply imitating a generic Russian accent

Wow that's a whole lot of bollocks. This exact approach to Russian accent is why it's never done right in the western films (unless they actually employ native Russian speakers to portray Russian characters, which I think they should).. the accent he's doing sounds painfully fake and so cliche, like a Hollywood flick from the 80's..
That"s the point, no?
Declaneo is it? The video’s called ‘how to speak Russian’ and that’s not how Russians speak. The majority of the sounds is done wrong actually
@@aolosfios he said at the start that this wasn't how Russians actually sounded and that a real Russian would tell in an instant that it was fake. The point was for it to be an over the top James bond villain style accent if I'm not mistaken.

I’m Russian and I’m watching this just to make sure they got it right 😂
The way he pronounces "v" is pretty accurate.
Very stereotypical, but very fitting...
Austroby

Kate I don't think you should worry of your accent is noticeable. I have always loved the Russian accent no after what language they're speaking. :)
You might not notice it, when you speak with people of your kind, however, as soon as you speak with native English speakers your accent will become apparent.
sebool112 I work retail and I once helped at another store. My manager and I were fascinated by their managers accent. She's Polish.
