The cure wasn't permanent. That's how Rogue and Magneto have their powers back. You can clearly see in the last shot of the Last Stand that Magneto moves that chess piece. So it was already hinted that it wasn't permanent.

Kate was killed and lost in the timestream later on, and Rachel Summers jumped to the past and ended up on the team with her father Cyclops and rooming with Kitty Pryde. yeah, Magneto is somewhat similar to Storm in that his powers are a type of energy manipulation
Magneto has always been based around electromagnetism since day 1 in the comics but to what degree changes a lot - the reason he is able to fly is by riding Earth's geomagnetic field (a circulating electric current) - the only reason he doesn't create electromagnetic force fields in the movies I'm guessing is (1) budget (2) make him weaker for story reasons
also, one of the earliest episodes of X-Men 90s animated series shows Magneto absorbing lightning blasts from Storm where he taunts back "don't you know electricity and magnetism are related?!" - it's also partially why Storm's eyes go white is because she's able to see energy currents (like Monica Rambeau does in WandaVision episode 7)

The biggest thing that Holden doesn’t understand is that this movie was meant to erase the events of X3 as if it never happened. Most hated X-3 and we got 1st class because of how poorly the movie was received. They followed it up with another poorly received movie in Wolverine origins. So after 1st class, Fox looked to reconcile the whole franchise with attempting to erase the “bad movies” from continuity while keeping the good things.
However, it’s still extremely messy when it comes to the timelines and many many plot holes regarding Mystique. The easiest way to understand what happened is that this movie ONLY changed the original movie timeline. The future that was shown was from the original films and that the timeline for the new films was unknown and not yet written.

He can assemble complex machinery in seconds and manipulate the iron in blood to take control of people’s actions. He has even shown power over forms of energy on the electromagnetic spectrum like visible light and gamma rays, though he rarely uses these abilities. On top of these gifts Magneto possesses genius level intelligence in multiple technical fields and genetic engineering. This is one of the best comic book movies in my opinion. Personally, I've always had a problem with stories using the Terminator rules for time travel because they just create paradoxes and logical inconsistencies, so you kinda have to not think too hard about this film's interpretation of time travel and how the flow and change of time between eras work, but if you can reasonably suspend your disbelief, this is a dope film. The performances are great. There's a ton of interwoven threads between the movies, and there's a load of dramatic tension. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Peter Dinklage and Nicholas Hoult, and even Jennifer Lawrence (who increasingly phones it in from here on out) are all great. This is probably my favorite titled X-Men movie. There are a lot of flawed movies in this series, but I genuinely believe X2, First Class, DOFP, Logan, Deadpool and DP2 are all genuinely great movies (and I really like a couple of the other ones too).
If you're still scratching your head over inconsistencies like why is Bolivar Trask a regular-sized black man in The Last Stand, but a white little person in Days of Future Past 40 years earlier or why William Stryker is completely different from one movie to the next, or even why Emma Frost is an adult in First Class but a teenager in Origins, just chalk it up to ripple effects of time travel paradoxes in the timeline or just ignore X-Men Origins: Wolverine altogether. Because that movie kinda blows and everybody basically agrees, that's pretty much what every movie after Origns does anyway, so there's really no point in trying to help it make sense in the context of these newer movies. As classic as the DOFP comic is, this might be one of the rare instances where I might actually prefer the loose adaptation to the original story the film uses for inspiration. When Wolverine changed the past, he woke up in his present day, just in the altered reality. Some things are the same and other things are different for the sole reason that the timeline changed. People made different choices, so maybe some things in previous movies happened exactly as we remember, maybe events only partially happened, or maybe some things didn't happen at all. Bottom line, a different timeline creates different choices and a different future. As you see in future movies after this one (X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men Dark Phoenix, New Mutants, Deadpool, Logan, and Deadpool 2) which all exist in this new timeline, there are still enemies, threats and plots against mutants. Magneto absolutely caused his own share of problems, so they didn't necessarily get a happily ever after. They just avoided the dystopian Sentinel future, because it was (apparently) the murder of Bolivar Trask that convinced the government to develop those advanced future Sentinels in order to wipe out the mutants in the first place. We just have to accept that Trask not dying results in those advanced Sentinels not being created. Now the world's opinion of mutants is no longer clean cut. There are still people who hate mutants and want to exterminate, control or neutralize the mutant population, but now not everyone thinks the mutants are all evil and are all looking to destroy them. A big change is that the X-Men became public superheros rather than the hidden covert operation they were in the original films. There's definitely much more nuance to the world in the following movies after this one.

Very well said, trying to wrap your head around time travel and trying to figure out what will change or not change is futile, we can never say, but to just think of it as different choices are made and some choices stay the same, but ultimately a new future evolves.

It only means that some things are changed, while other things stay the same. Look at BACK TO THE FUTURE, for example. At the end of the movie, some things are different, Marty's family is more sophisticated and successful, whereas Biff is not. But they still live in the same house. Marty still has the same girlfriend. So clearly a lot of things happened the same way as in the original timeline. There's no logical basis for your assumption that everything would be "erased". Why would it be? If you changed one detail in the past, countless things would remain unaffected by the change.

In the Writers' Commentary on "The Last Stand", they state that the body Charles goes into is his twin brother, who was brain-dead since birth; and their parents paid to keep him alive artificially. It's not a fan-theory, it's the writers' own words. Also, in "The Last Stand", you see Erik's powers come back at the very end when he makes the chess piece wiggle. The mutant cure was never a one-and-done shot; because when mutants were around the boy whose powers generated the cure, there was a radius of effect. When you were in it, your mutation was suppressed. But when you were out of it, your powers would come back. So even though Erik and Rogue both lost their powers for a time, it was only temporary.
As for inconsistencies, there isn't a concrete explanation in the films, but the way I've always seen it is similar to the explanation given in the Flashpoint in DC: similar to how breaking the sound barrier creates a sonic boom, breaking the time barrier creates a time boom. If you break time, the effects don't move linearly, they move in all directions, affecting the past beyond the point of re-entry. So Logan changing time in this movie affects events and people before it, where Charles and Erik parted ways when they were younger and Charles was paralyzed before losing his hair.

This movie was critical and commerical success (at 700 million+, which isn't that big in comparison to other franchises, but it was big for them, especially when they tried competing with the MCU were just starting to dominate the space). As a movie it's a fun ride, as an adaptation it's pretty solid (Simon Kinberg writing peaked here), but once you think about it as whole, there's some issues.
Originally, Kitty Pryde went back in time to her younger body, but since the inciting incident was set in the 70's, gotta have someone who was there, so Wolverine is the star of the show, for better or for worst when the most infamous X-Men directors loves this character.
Combining both timelines was pretty cool, but as you think about it, and as time goes on, it gets way messier. Like characters are born earlier, people die sooner, and other things that become glaring, like aging... Oh boy lol
What Jen brought up about Magneto still making mutants a threat with the stadium ALWAYS bothered me. After this, mutants aren't hated as much, which is fine, but you gotta earn it more (which they kinda do later I guessed)
Mystique was so big as a presence here afterwards because Jennifer Lawrence was the biggest actress at the time, and here, this is the last time she puts in effort to be in these movies.
Some characters that mean a bit more:
Blink - she's a pink elf looking woman who can throw energy daggers that teleport things or make portals... Which is pretty accurate for the movie, be great of she had more lines, but The Gifted gave her way more to do.
Sunspot - Member of The New Mutants, he could charge himself with solar energy and look like a living sunspot. Giving him super strength, and durability, and heat powers. Here, he's the Human Torch... Okay?
Bishop - From a different alternate future, he can absorb and energy and redirect it. He's been in so much stuff, usually stopping Apocalypse.
Warpath - Native American mutant who has super strength, durability, and senses. Here he looks like his X-Force era self.
Peter's youngest sister "Polaris?" - I think is there version of Polaris, Magneto's daughter with the same powers. Like Blink, The Gifted gave her way more to do.
The Sentinels - The movie does a pretty good job with them (Not a fan the 70's design. Dyson Vacuum looking things), but what bothers me a bit is that they use Mystique's DNA to adapt to other mutants... You know who has the better power set for them to learn from... Darwin... Never gonna get over that.
And that's my little Ted Talk of the day, and it only gets worse from me here onwards lol

I think the series has good enough explanations for your "continuity errors". Magneto was already shown getting his powers back at the end of X3, so the "cure" was clearly only temporary. We know Professor X went into the comatose body. It is strongly implied in the movie that it is his twin brother, he talks about that hypothetical scenario earlier in X3. Also even if the body didn't look like him, he could project an image of himself into those around him to make them see him as himself. Professor X could use Beast's serum to walk around when he's older. It would be weird for him to still use it if it took away his powers, but Beast could've improved it to allow the Professor to walk when needed and still have powers. Rogue had the white in her hair because the events of X1 still happened in the new timeline. The Professor didn't need to stop that to save any of his students from dying. It doesn't take much of a leap in logic to get to these explanations.

"They never brought up how Magneto got his powers back. They also never addressed how Professor X is back".
Actually, the ending of X3: The Last Stand already showed us how Magneto got his powers back and how Professor X came back. When Magneto attempted to move the chess piece without touching it, you can see it slightly move so this showed that the cure was only temporary. Plus, director Brett Ratner pointed out that the coma patient is in fact Xavier's twin brother and he transferred his consciousness into his brother's body.

Thank you and the people that voted on the poll. The Rogue Cut is SO much better than the original cut. I always respect people's opinions, but if anyone says the original is better than they are just plain wrong. 😛 Ever since I saw the RC, I am actually unable to watch the theatrical version anymore.
Btw, I don't know if you have seen the old X-Men: animated series, but you should totally watch that with Jen (on your own time of course, it's too much to react to) I think she would like it. Like she said she likes the idea of the mutants but some of the movies don't really hit for her (understandable) but the animated series is what made me a huge diehard X-Men fan that's saying something considering that I never read the comics. Great reaction as always and I hope you and Jen have a blessed day.💚

okay im sorry i just have to mention this. The big reveal of Charles coming back was in the after credits scene of the wolverine, which is canonically set before this film. The after credits scene shows charles and Magneto finding wolverine and wolverine has a big reaction to charles still being alive because the last time he saw him was just before he died in xmen the last stand. It isn't a soft reboot at all, it flows perfectly. And yes i know it is a little convenient that he has a twin brother but all im saying is i genuinely think it would have been a good idea to rewatch the wolverine and see that after credits scene.

A ton to unpack in this one. Y’all talked about a lot of stuff in this one after. Love how y’all analyze everything at the end.
The only question of continuity that might be able to be somewhat explained is how they get their powers back after “the cure” at the end of X3. It wasn’t really a cure, but more like a treatment. Similar to how Beast and Prof. X would inject themselves every so often to be able to blend in and walk. “The cure” should have been a continuous treatment for the rest of their lives for it to suppress their powers. The cure didn’t make them human by changing their DNA, it just kept them from using their powers like the little mutant kid when they were near him. Once they left the area where he was at, they got their powers back. That’s why after some undisclosed amount of time after the events at Rykers Island, you can see Magneto subtly move the chess piece. He was already getting his powers back.
One thing I definitely agree with, is the change in Mystique. Rebecca’s was way better because she was actually mysterious. She wasn’t as prominent a character as the rest of the cast and you believed she was another person until the reveal. J-Law’s mystique, I’m guessing because of J-Law’s popularity right after the two hunger games movies that followed first class, was made as a more central character. The stories started to revolve around her after first class because in the studios eyes, “J-Law sells tickets. Make her important.”
Still my favorite young X-Men film right now. And the Rogue Cut of course is better and helps to explain how the sentinels found the group. In the original cut it doesn’t explain how they were found, they just were. Which is why the sentinel group that comes after them is much larger than on the beginning.
Didn’t care for the “new and improved” sentinels though. The original one seen in the danger room of X3 is what I was looking forward to. The fact that they can mimic powers because of mystiques ability is bonkers to me. Mystique can’t copy powers. She just changes the way she looks. But J-Law sells tickets.

    • @julesb1970
      @julesb1970 2 роки тому

Just to add on to your comment about the sentinels and mimicking powers, don't forget because of the Rogue cut we learn she has be a prisoner foe however long and been used for experimentation, so they easily could of used her DNA/power and along with Mystics and I cooperated the two into the new more powerful Sentinals that are seen in the future and now can also use other or take on other mutant powers, at least that's how I see it.

Just a note on why changing "one event" would have such large consequences-- the original event was a simple one man assassination at the treaty signing, none of the other events of this movie happened. Changing it from a lone mutant assassination to this insane spectacle with the stadium, huge battle, etc. would definitely have changed public opinion a lot differently. I will agree though that it's hard to imagine it turning out *better* with this timeline.

In the comic book story it was Kitty that goes back to prevent Senator Kelly from being murdered. In later stories he becomes an ally of X-Men when they save his wife(if I recall correctly). The Comic story was more concise and powerful. Kitty was sent back during a last stand in the Baxter Building where all of the x-men died.

  • @vetarlittorf1807
    @vetarlittorf1807 2 роки тому +7

The Sentinels in this movie are way scarier and deadlier than in the comics. This movie is one of the few times when they actually improve upon something in the comics. In the comics, the Sentinels were often rather goofy and too easily taken down. Heck, there was one time in the comics where a Sentinel simply dropped dead because a random beam of light overloaded its sensors. The only times the comics made a Sentinel intimidating is when they created a super Sentinel like Bastion.
This movie is also surprisingly accurate to the comics. The main difference is that Mystique was trying to assassinate Senator Kelly, not Bolivar Trask. Kitty sent herself back her younger self rather than sending Wolverine. And in the comics the Sentinels only took over the US, not the entire world.
Still, this is one of the greatest comic book movies ever made. In fact, 2014 was a really great movie year.
What I also love is that this is (and MAYBE X3) the only movie that does justice to Storm and shows her being a great leader and uses her powers in an interesting way (like creating a massive blizzard to slow down the Sentinel carriers, charging up Bishop and combing her power with Magneto's to take down a horde of Sentinels). The whole teamwork the mutants show against the future Sentinels is really creative and effective.

Hey, Holden and Jen! I absolutely love this movie! I feel that the fusion of both casts and the juggling of so many moving parts was near virtuosic!
I rank this film higher than X2 because it came closer to approximating its comic book inspiration despite the "Days of Future Past" source material being a greater level of difficulty to adapt than "God Loves, Man Kills". I always give the X films latitude with respect to comic accuracy because they continue laying track for a locomotive that already left the station. Despite some unavoidable relationship and plot changes, this adaptation really captures the spirit of the Claremont era.
From a cinematic standpoint, the powerful duality of Charles and Erik remains the core of these films and you get a double dose of it here: as young antagonists making a temporary alliance and as weary, regretful veterans reconciling while facing extinction. JLaw's Mystique remains the moral fulcrum, Evan Peters' Quicksilver delivers a bravura showpiece stunt and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine gets to play in the same sandbox with the kids! The dystopic future sequence is particularly horrific apocalyptically presenting the deaths of iconic characters. New talent is showcased in that thrilling trademark style of powers used in concert with Blink's use of portals being an amazing highlight!
Just like the use of the Cuban Missile Crisis in "First Class", "Future Past" also cleverly blends history into the mix with Nixon, the JFK assassination and the Zapruder-like footage of the Parisian incident. Yes, the dangling plot thread of Mystique-Stryker goes nowhere leaving Wolverine's story between now and "Apocalypse" open to speculation. Yes, the utopian ending that reunites the original cast leaving their parallel 21st-century adventures open to speculation can be viewed as a cop-out. I say there's no shortage of X foes like Mr. Sinister, the Brood, Sauron, Bastion, Selene, Exodus, Proteus, Reavers, etc that could have come into play and plenty of unresolved contention between Mags and Charley that could have easily flared up providing fodder for numerous exploits. The speculation is part of the fun!
I'm really glad you listened to feedback and saw THE ROGUE CUT which brought Anna Paquin's Rogue back into the fold for a phenomenal action sequence in which Magneto and Charles cut loose breaking her out of prison and barely getting away with their lives!

The reason mystique at the end pretending to be striker makes sense. Logan was stuck drowning, mystique pulled him out saving him from waking up and perpetually drowning over and over until he's happened upon. The reason she would pretend to be striker is so they can get logan back onto his timeline... the one where he gets the adamantium and joins the xmen. If they didn't deliver him to striker his original self may have been on a totally new path where he never gets experimented on by striker and that would create too many ripples as the movie phrases it. At least that's my reasoning and interpretation.

It just occurred to me that the Dark Phoenix events could have been prevented because Charles looked into Logan’s future and saw those events. So maybe he was extra cautious and was able to set a different trajectory. Also, Jean wouldn’t have sacrificed herself if the events with Stryker were never changed. So maybe the Mystique tease at the end was an attempt to explain the difference there.
