    Also in the theatrical version, the shot of Ripley falling into the furnace, the Queen Chestburster actually breaks out through Ripley’s chest as she’s falling, but Ripley, using the last of her strength, grabs the Queen and keeps it from escaping; bringing it into the furnace with her.

      I actually like that ending better. I don't know if it was changed because it was considered a little too cheesy or unnecessary but I thought it made for a good visual and at least gave the xenomorph one last screen appearance before being wiped out*. I thought it drove home that we were actually witnessing the death of the species.
      It's also an extra heroic final moment for Ripley who is not only sacrificing herself but fighting with every last ounce of strength until the bitter end.

    Approaching any piece of art with a neutral pov is always the best way. It might not be always as good as you expect it to be, but that doesn't mean it's as bad as others claim it to be.
    Also, one of the best things about this film is that it taught us that xenomorphs differ depending on who their hosts are.

      most people dont like because of what happen to hicks, newt and the ending for ripley.
      For this story, i do understand why they cut them off. The actress of Newt, was a little older, and that contradicts the idea that cryosleep stop aging. And Hicks was badly wounded, he could not do anything... For Ripley, it was a rest of the warrior. Again, do enjoy Alien 3 and 4 more than the prometheus and the sequel.

      The problem is (at the time) if you loved Aliens you couldn’t divorce yourself from killing characters you had invested a lot into. That put Alien3 into a deep hole with fans in the first 5 minutes of the movie. It also negated everything Ripley did in Aliens basically not for plot but for studio and production issues.
      After 30 years I can appreciate the movie (specifically the assembly cut) but not when I saw it in theaters.

    • @boretrk
      @boretrk Місяць тому +3

      Since killing off Newt is a direct consequence of how Aliens ended, those who can't handle that should direct their anger at that movie instead of this one.

    • @paratus04
      @paratus04 Місяць тому +8

      @@boretrk I’m not understanding your point. Newt, Hicks, Bishop and Ripley survived and were on their way home.
      Alien 3 retconned in a hidden special face hugger egg on the Sulaco that had a royal facehugger that could impregnate Ripley with a Queen and survive to impregnate another creature.
      That was all decided by the Alien 3 production. If they had wanted too they could have written a story that didn’t kill Newt or Hicks. It could have occurred a few years after Aliens to match the actresses age for example.

      I tend to agree. I prefer Resurrection to this movie, but it's also very... "questionable" I suppose is the best term for some parts of the later acts. If you go in and expect nothing it's a lot more fun than going in and expecting another Aliens. Some parts are just outright stupid lol but it is a fun movie and I do watch it pretty damn often. I also really enjoy the director's cut with the extended scenes. That makes it a lot more fun for me, even if I dislike the opening sequence more. There are two extended scenes in particular I love and absolutely hate that they cut out (the flashcards and the chapel). In the theatrical version the facehugger impregnates a rottweiler rather an ox, that's why the alien resembles a dog (and why the guy cleaning the fan shaft was looking for "Spike").
    They originally tested using an actual dog (a whippet) in an alien costume for the newborn alien, but as it turned out, whippets have a very dainty gait that made it look too cute, and the idea was scrapped. You can look up the BTS footage of the dog costume testing.
    Also, the unique webbed facehugger is a "royal" facehugger which carries two embryos, one a queen and one a drone to assist the queen.

      Alien 3 is something of a flawed masterpiece & I think after the upbeat ending of Aliens with Ripley, Hicks & Newt being almost a family people found the dystopian vibe of Alien 3 hard to get their heads round.
      Hicks & Newt needed to die, to continue to keep Ripley isolated. Throughout the films Ripley’s story arc is that of a tragic hero with her having lost everything; the crew of the Nostromo, her daughter, the marines….& Newt.
      I totally agree, the story ended with Ripley’s swan dive into the furnace. I’ve always loved Alien3, having seen it upon release. But the assembly cut is a far superior film. That said, I do prefer Ripley’s swan dive from the theatrical cut; the chestburster coming out & Ripley holding onto it was her final heroic act to ensure the Queen died.

Regarding ending franchises on a down note... I would like franchises to have the guts of a clear start and end to begin with, instead of churning out another one and another one to milk the brand 😅 Or at the very least, if they'd take the time and effort to make it a good and memorable one (I do hear good things about Romulus, so that sounds like one of those exceptions).

      Someone in another thread did offer an interesting take. They suggested that removing the chestburster scene makes it clear that it is Ripley's choice to turn down the offer of help from Weyland Yutani and sacrifice herself, rather than having the birth of the alien effectively removing that choice and leaving her no option but to jump.

Finally, transfer from Planet to Sulaco and here I admit it's the biggest stretch, but queen being a large beast could have carried the eggs placed on her back (between the tube appendages) whe she was unknowingly scooped up by landing gear. In the original script for "Alien," shooting the Xenomorh with the harpoon doesn't succeed in knocking it out of the shuttle's hatch, and it goes up to Ripley and smashes its hand through the faceplate of her helmet rips her head off. In an alternate ending, the Xenomorh bites Ripley's head off then sits down at the radio and mimics Dallas' voice to send a distress call to Earth setting up a trap for the would be rescuers and gaining transportation back to Earth. It was a studio executive who hated these endings who insisted that the story be rewritten with Ripley defeating the Xenomorph and surviving.

    Granted we have the Assembly Cut, but I'm glad that Alien 3 is getting its due these days -the cinema cut was still not as bad as people tend to think, but there's a lack of character depth and nuance, which does make it inferior. It's also worth knowing that the movie represents one of the more egregious times that a studio has interfered with production. The other one that stands out in my mind was the issue between Richard Donner and the Salkinds on the back to back shoot for Superman I and II, ultimately resulting in two editions of Superman II.

You can even hear the character who falls into the fan call the dogs name, saying "is that you Spike?" moments before his demise. The bioengineering crap didn’t come into existence until Prometheus decades later. The first and second films tell they story as if they are part of the natural order. Every comic from the 80s and 90s played off of this as well. One even suggesting that on their home world they were kept in check by other even more horrifying life forms but once off the planet they became invasive with no natural predators.

      None of that bioengineering stuff existed until decades later when Ridley Scott when all "George Lucas" on us and wanted to "improve" on past films. It is 100% clear in the first two films that they are animals from some planet somewhere out there. The worst thing Ridley Scott ever did in film was to "explain" the origins of the Aliens - which is worse than a prequel trilogy about Anakin Skywalker.

    The problem with sequels is that there's an expectation that the public wants it bigger and louder than the last one, which was what "Aliens" was, it was a bigger and louder "Alien". There was always the idea that religion play a part of the third installment; the original draft taking place on a planet made entirely out of wood, like a church planet. This was scrapped. What I saw in the theaters when I was 13 however, despite the logistical nightmares behind it, did make an impression on me, even though I did love James Cameron's film a lot, I understood with the Director's Cut of "Aliens" that Ripley appears to greet each opening of the subsequent films with a loss. In "Aliens" it was the daughter, but in "Alien³" it was the entire "family" she gained in the prior film. This tells a lot about the extensive damage such a creature can have on just a single life, imagine a whole crew of people. To think, the three first Alien movies had great, talented young directors at the helm but the 3rd one appeared to fall under the most scrutiny and butchery at the hands of its studio industry. A true Fincher "debut" wouldn't happen until he made "Se7en" next but you do see his talent for visuals here.
    "Alien: Resurrection" was written by Joss Whedon. I don't know if that's fair warning considering that you've seen his work on "Firefly" and the MCU, but it is a stylistic shift from the tone of this one. It has its fans.

    There are 2 major differences to the directors cut: In first version the carrier was the Dog instead of the Cow. Which i found slightly better... maybe the CGI-Baby looked to cute. And the secon difference, which i think they shouldnt cut it out... When ripley jumps upside down, the chestburster comes out of her. And with her last breath, she holdt the QueenBaby close, until they both dump into the metal.
    imho this ist the photographicly most beautiful Alienmovie. Fincher was a total rookie, and they didnt give him any chance to let this movie succeed. But you can tell the style, the storytelling and his terrifying sense for these "no-way-youre-kidding"-Moments. I like this movie even an inch more than camerons one. A lot of people dislike this because of what happened to Hicks and Newt, but I think it is possibly one of the best of the original three. The oppression is so much more... desperate in this film.

    The Death of Ripley was actually Weaver's idea which was rejected by James Cameron. She became a producer on ALIEN 3 which had her making the death of her character the big selling point for rounding out Ripley's character. A big payday and exec producer credit got her to come back for ALIEN RESURRECTION.

    People give this movie crap but apart from some bad effects it is so damn good. yeah its different from the others but its really inventive. I like the idea that the xenomorph changes its abilities based on what animal it gestates in. making it a quadruped and fast makes it so much scarier. imagine this film with modern effects.

      Yes the Alien franchise doesn 't need that feel good family movie crap. Not to mention the awful dumb grunt dialogue which could have been in Predator.

  • @rabid_si
    @rabid_si Місяць тому +1

    This movie is much maligned, but i've always loved it. The atmosphere is oppressive and depressive but masterful, triumph in spite of absolute despair. Great performances, great set production, and some great dialogue. Charles S. Dutton's speech convincing the others of the plan might be one of my favourite moments in the series ("Do you want it on your feet? ...or on your fuckin' knees!"). Chills every time.
    I just wish the assembly cut didn't completely ruin the scoring during Ripley's sacrifice. Plays like it was cut together haphazardly by an intern (probably was to be fair!) and could do with rescoring for the cut.
