Motorcycle Review: Zero FX 6.5 *CDSR*

- For over two months, we were given the opportunity to ride the $H!t outta this bike and we were extremely surprised at what we experienced. For a simple rundown, see the categories below and feel free to ask whatever questions pop up.
(AS COMPARED TO OTHER DUAL SPORTS)
Design: Above average and draws a ton of attention!
Street Performance: Way above average with a unique sound and incredible power delivery/acceleration!
Dirt Performance: Better than many, but just shy of the plated dirt bikes such as the lightweights produced by KTM & Husky. The lack of clutch, shifting, and low seat height really helped make some trails easier than expected.
Range: We took this bike through some gnarly trails with deep sand, loose rocks, big hillclimbs and we were still able to get 45 miles of off-road use in with 5% battery remaining when loading up.
Overall: The perfect option for an in-city commuter that wants to haul the FX to trails on the weekend.
Side Note: The electric motorcycles seem to open your eyes to a whole new experience of motorcycling. Their subtle futuristic sound combined with a very high performing package allows for a whole different level of excitement.

Awesome review! That may be a great bike for folks who live closer to trails and/or private property... You know, for the stealth and "totally legal" adventures!
eveRide ADV of course... because we're all super responsible! 😂
I take my 2011 XU up on mountain bike single track all the time since it's so quiet. Most of the time people think it's just an ebike
🤓🤓🤓
That chain sounds kind of cool. I'm a real big fan of these bikes. I used to have a YFZ 450, but that thing was a police magnet. I got stopped every week. Half of the time, the noise gave me away. It sounded awesome, but most folks don't get it. That said, this should be awesome because it's stall-proof. I rode one on a rainy day. I laid it down in a skate park.
It’s nice to see so many favorable comments from the off-road motorcycle community towards electric bikes. Street motorcycles on the other hand, particularly the cruiser variety, feel very threatened with electric motorcycles, glad to see this is a whole different vibe!
Awesome review! I would love to try one especially for the stealth sound!
Dr. Dual Sport the sound is pretty crazy!
That thing looks like a blast! Great review. I'm really impressed. It sounds like an rc car!
Twistygrip Fla the sound is addictive!
Hey El Jefe! Great review! Very well done, a fun watch. The electric bikes have come a long way, but I'm still gonna Braaap!
any way to make this electric dirtbike loud?
Right on! Great Review! I've been looking for good video of this bike offroad
I mean the heaviest version of the Zero FX, the 7.2kW model which also touts the highest range and power rating only weighs 289lbs ready to ride. Whicchhhhh might I add, is exactly the same as the upcoming 2019 Honda CRF450L. Whiccchhhhh again I'll add is going to make somewhere 'around 45hp'. The 2018 Zero FX 7.2kW makes 46hp and 78lb-ft. instaneously and those numbers remain constant through its 85 mph top speed.
Now if only someone would talk a 125-250 class mx racer weighing around 110-120lbs in racing gear to take it around a track see how it handles with a skilled, light rider. I imagine with a rider weighing so little it'd be able to keep the battery/motor temps within optimal performance range for much longer than a 180-200 lb rider would.
hey so is this not the 7.2 i didnt know there were different ones. i read an article that had the numbers you put with 46hp... is the one he reviewed in the video less than 46hp? also do you know if 34'7 seat height is ok for someone with long legs and a height of 6'1?
Hollywood electrics makes a liquid cooled mod for motors so they don't overheat. Be weary of any air cooled electric motor, they will have temperature limitations.
kalimul great insight!
Thanks for the shout-out Kalimul! We mod them for racing Pikes Peak International Hilll Climb & also have raced the SR models at Barber Motorsports Park (amongst other tracks). Check us out on FB for more info. :)
Good to see it can be fitted with a chain for off-road use.
does that mean you cant go offroad with the standard belt it comes equipped with? if so why not? i read that a belt is better because it doesnt stutter and a chain you constantly have to clean
@@BSABD315 belts are easily damaged by rocks that are flung up off road. Plus they don’t self clean like a chain in mud. Belts work best in clean, on road paved environments.
love it, if I ever switched to motovan life, Id have one for sure
Wandering Beast exactly how I brought it to the trails!
What a great review. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for you work😊
Wow....I'll need to buy one
Jory Blake definitely a bike you don't want to count out!
Jory, we're the #1 Electric Motorcycle Dealership in the world, but based in LA! Sign-up for a test-ride & drop by: HollywoodEletrics.com
The limiter, we'll find a fix for that. Got a better battery?
Cool, thanks! My commute is all city and back roads. The max speed I see is 45mph with the majority being 30mph. Think it's time to call my Zero dealer.
Fx is my favorite
I think this bike for off-road makes more sense than there other bikes
Joshua Kyle Really, How? A 45 mile range off eoad?? What maybe an hour then you got to recharge for 7-11 hours. I dont think so.
Awesome reviews on alot of different things Off ride. But I was was curious now that you are on the KTM what suspension changes you have made. Being a Ca. desert rider and Dual sporter I was very interested in what you have discovered.
I have just toggled with the stock suspension settings to see what works best for the mixed terrain we ride. My weight is in the low 180's, so I haven't been compelled to upgrade it yet.
ive had two zero fx a 2016 fxs and a 2017 fx i really dont know what kind of riding you guys are doing but ive tried to trail ride my zeros and reach the thermal limit of the bike every time i ride within minutes so it totally sucks i am really amazed that you didnt see that except for a hot day ive tried contacting zero on the issue but they wouldnt even talk to me
We were told there are aftermarket options for cooling, but yeah we only saw it hitting it on the one day.
As a Phoenix rider, that limitation is a deal killer. They should've fanned the heck out of the motor.
Stimpy's Garage there's an aftermarket cooling kit that apparently works really well.
get the liquid cooled mx bike redshift from alta motors !!! its better ..
@@gmy33 thanks so much i found it it has 37 seat height which is best ive seen im 6'1 so its hard to find one that i can fit on i think this one would be ok.
@@BSABD315 wel alta is not for sale anymore .. you coyl uy zero or wait for the much better electric mx bike from sweden 80kw power ! .. i forgot the name
But how many hours per charge? That's kind of important. Did I miss it or did he not say it.
We tried not to cover the basic stats already on their site. It was more of a real world off-road test to see how it measured up.
I would love one off these
Great review! What is the range for this thing? I am sold, only the range can make me not buy it.
did you buy it ? the range is pretty decent lol
Realworld Range ... 50 km riding fast, highway, or heavy dirt, .. Range 110km riding easy 60kmh on roads or dirtplaying .. sorry no miles
Excellent review! I love off-roading and I can use my WR for those extended rides, but I will need to put in some road time as well. My commute is about 50 miles one way. Were you able to routinely get 50+ miles out of one charge?
Keith Hamilton not on the highway, but 50 in city miles is doable. Highway miles eat up the battery.
Step up to the bigger battery and no problem
Would definitely like to know how the range was - Is this a bike that could compete with a comparable dual sport with an long range tank?
Also is the centre of gravity good?
i seen in an article it goes 150 miles on a full charge and it takes about 2 hours to fully charge with the charging kit that can be purchased with it
Looks like a blast. What part of CA do you ride in?
Elwood Central Coast
It looks identical to the parts of Southern California I lived in 20 years ago. Wish I knew dual sports existed then. Ride safe.
Pozo?
How durable is it with crashes and drops?
Not very but enough .. i drag mine around .. the plastic breaks .. but after that its oke .. you could also buy ktm .. but they have far less range.. or surron light and nimble !!
can you remove the battery and load it in your house ? or put a second one when the first one is empty ? thx
the seat height is 34'7 would that be too small for me and my legs? i am 6'1 close to 6'2 would it be ok for me?
Thats a light weight review imo. Also from the looks of it slipping around in those corners that bike is no true enduro or offroad machine but might be good enough for a novice on reasonable trails but probably not to hot on singletrack.
That was an excellent video! How far was your ride?
Never mind, I read below. At 45 miles and 5% left, that's abysmal. That's the beginning of a ride for me. lol. Still, It would be a perfect quick brapper!
minitstop thanks! It get about 70 in city, but our mileage was recorded during times we were really flogging the bike.
Zero offers different battery sizes, and a battery extension pod. If you're willing to spend big bucks for it, you can get the range up to 170 miles. Probably closer to 120 with the way they are riding though.
Any range infos?
If battery technology catches up soon, Ill buy one
The new one has 7.2 kwh .. its getting better every year .. i have mine for 6 years now .. i expect at least 10 year batt life .. also look at ktm freeride e .. they are liquid cooled
what kind of range did you get average? I know there's lots of different factors, but just looking for a ballpark idea..
Craig Daye off road we got close to 50 in gnarly sandy terrain. In city, we averaged around 65 and highway was 35... probably because all of the off-road mods.
one more question why switch from the belt to a chain? why did they do that what purpose does it serve? and also is there anyway to make it louder as a muffler is not an option
The chain is louder than a belt. The belt can clog up with mud and debris and either strech it or break it...so best to swap to a chain for serious off road use.
Just curious how is the battery life on the bike. Please don't tell me the actual rating but more so miles or time. Thanks
just like gas bikes, it really depends on the terrain and how you're riding it. We took it through a mix of trails with varying terrain/ challenges and got 45 miles with still 5% battery remaining.Jonas Hill
@@CaliforniaDualSportRiders was that on full charge or was it on 22% like in the video? i read that it goes 150 miles on full charge is that true?
how long would a full charge last on typical day of riding the trails? That's the only real concern I have about electric bikes right now.
50km fast trail riding .. you could change batts or charge in 1 hour and go again .. so its good for play .. not yet for fast enduro .. but one lap
Wow
I want 3.
How does the range compare to a 4-stroke 450? Especially off road.
Offroad? About the same except the zero is MUCH MUCH lighter
how many hours of fun did you have riding before you had to go home for 8 hours of charging?
or minutes .....
Lee Bradley it was about 45ish miles of gnarly terrain and sand. Still had 5% left when loading up.
I play for 3 hours or for 1 hour superfast ..than charge for 1 hour and go again .. its all in your own set up
The checkmate move will be when they have motor sound choices. Like today I want it to sound like a thumper or maybe an open wheel race car.
Buy headphones and some mp3s so other people wont be annoyed
Thor Stambaugh exactly, people are so obsessed with having the loudest motorcycles.
Them thar jets is fast but I likes the sound of ma biplane
I have a WR250R, and I usually do 40-50 miles.
Unfortunately, it seems this would be pushing it for range on this machine (especially if you run into a situation where you have to double back or something).
Sure would love an electric for the down low torque and silence. I have 3 electric skateboards, and I love them, but if I run out of battery on one of those I can just call an Uber...
You would love it !! Or try a sur ron .. and bring extra batt ...easy !!
How does this compare to a yz250?
AHHH when you didn't click it into 1st before taking off at :51 seconds it really hurt my brain
Hehanni 😂😂😂👌🏻
Is that Navi at 4:02?
Cooler Film....leider (noch) bei der Fahrweise, Kette, und MT 21 nur ca 30 miles möglich.
Solar charging better batterys make it good thing for special forces guys
Since this bike is electric is it legal to drive on the road without getting pulled over by the cops, I'm asking anyone this because I cant find it on the internet anywhere.
Jacob Jackson all of their bikes are street legal.
Hey i hear chris herias song off of thenx !
0:30 ERO FX? really?
I just love that the rider of an expensive custom Harley IMMEDIATELY loses control of his noisy, leaky, pos.
My bike is zero sr red color
Sweet, and awesome power!
Great job on the bike review, but I don't think I want a Nissan Leaf dual sport bike. LOL. I'll stick with a thumper.
John Barnes - NorCal ADV more like a Tesla dual sport. The power to weight ratio would warrant a little better comparison. Haha
My bad. You are right, the bike does have Tesla styling...
John Barnes 50 minutes of fun followed by 9 hours of waiting , most likely 🙊
Lee Bradley actually it's more dependent on mileage, terrain and such. The actual time frame depends on a it of different factors. We spent a surprising amount of time having fun on this thing before it got the 5% battery during load up.
3 hours full charge time + hot swappable batteries without tools so u can just like carry a spare set of batteries (it has 35 miles extreme off road range and 70 miles normal commuting range) so u just ride, swap batteries and plug in the dead set, then keep riding and so it goes on.
ermm every bike outruns a harley
too tall
