  • Me and my buddy Ben had the day off from guiding, and decided to fish in the rain, originally it was supposed to rain a lot more than it did. So after sitting around awhile at Soque river Outffiters hanging out with our good friend Big T. We decided to go hit the river and do some filming while there, y’all enjoy!

Hey guys, do you prefer the 10’ 3wt or the 10’9” 3wt? I want to euro nymph but continue to read and hear that they cast pretty well with regular 3wt line or oven over-weighed to 4wt floating line for dries, or tandem rigs? Would really like your opinions before I go pick up the 10’9” this week (maybe even tomorrow). Thoughts?

I personally use the 10’ 2wt most of the time but I have the other two also. They’ll all 3 cast a double taper 3wt line pretty well. However the first guide being so close to the reel does make it a little tricky when making a long cast using a double haul. It’ll get you by if you’re needing to change to a dry quick, but most of the time I’ll throw a dry on my euro leader if it’s just for short term use. If I know I’m gonna need a dedicated dry fly line or leader I take a syndicate 10’ 3wt with a double taper 3wt line with a 15 or so foot leader

Are the rainbows in there all stocked with holdovers or are those wild bows ? And is there plenty of good public water to fish on the soque in the area you were ?

It’s a mix of both, this particular property doesn’t stock fish but the majority of them are fish that have come up or down river and just stay there, and there is a two mile public stretch. It has some fish but corn and worm fisherman keep most of them, so finding a big one on the public section can be pretty tough. Depends on the day though I’ve seen big fish moving in and out of some private water and be loaded in the public stretch, never know til you go though!

My brother, a neophyte fly fisherman, is on the river at the moment. Sent a pic of a 3 1/2 pound hen ‘bow. Squirmy worm red, he said. He has no qualms about using fake bait, and doesn’t realize that he’s not really fly fishing.

That’s such a stupid take. When you’re throwing streamers, minnows, crayfish, egg patterns, etc they aren’t ~flies~ either. But only worms get the hate from edgy purists for some reason. Every fly is fake bait that is the point of fly fishing. Keep getting skunked on your parachute dries though lmao your brother and the rest of us are laughing at you
