  • In this video we cover the Top 5 Do's and Don'ts while Euro Nymphing. I am certain there are other key points. Some that may even out rank the tips and advice given here. However, after a year plus of doing guided fly fishing trips, these 5 things I find myself providing a lot of feedback on how to tweak and improve the foundation anglers I take out have.

    The one thing I didn’t see you talk about but you actually did quite a bit in the video is being a one handed fisher, the most important thing in euro nymphing (in my opinion) would be like management. George Daniel talks about it too where you should only use your rod arm to cast and set hooks where your off hand is used to manage line. This really helps with keeping a softer touch on your sighter. Other than that this is a great video, even for someone who’s been euro nymphing for a long time I learned a couple things!

    • @tightliningmd
      @tightliningmd  Рік тому

      Very well said. So as I personally fish I think the “off hand” is critical. It helps us gain contact almost immediately as flies enter the water, and sustain through our drifts. What I find, most often with beginners, is they struggle to utilize that second hand and manage their line efficiently. So very often on a first trip out I have them work with a fixed like of 15-18 feet costs, so we don’t need it as much to start. Then as they get comfortable and see what drifts need to look like and adjust to longer lighter rods, I’ll work in that second hand and line management. Excellent suggestion! I do a pulley retrieve, versus his hand twists. But to each their own on how they donor.

      Lol I respect that. Process vs outcome. Need, no. However, I highly encourage someone who is serious to have a 10' 3 wt. approximately. I will be releasing a Euro Nymphing Series in 2024 that discussed rod and reel options and specifics on what I would select when buying/considering.

      Hey Raleigh,
      That is good honest feedback. Thank you! With only a Go-Pro that was hard to demonstrate up close. I am glad you brought it up though. I actually just recorded a series this summer, that is in process of editing, where I did get close ups, drone shots, slo mo shots, etc. My goal is to release that over the winter and early part of the spring. Hopefully you will come back to check it out and get a better more step by step direction for how to and with better camera work. • @tightliningmd
      @tightliningmd  Рік тому

      Appreciate you watching. Thanks for commenting. However, I’ve watched it back and I don’t agree with your comment. If you stop too low or too high they all have negative impacts to cast and what it does to accuracy and landing spot. All the demonstrated casts are good. If I stop any higher or lower I wouldn’t have hit intended target. What I see far too often is people finishing with rod basically on water. All of mine finished at shoulder height, maybe the last slightly lower. However, it demonstrated the point I intended to make. You are welcome to troll and disagree, but the point was valid and the demonstration was accurate.

    • @spikeconley
      @spikeconley Рік тому +1

      @@tightliningmd Pointing out that your rid tip is finishing low when you want it to finish high is hardly "trolling", it's just pointing out the obvious. Every cast it finishes below your shoulder, but that quibble is beside the point because even shoulder height is too low. You're not stopping your rod tip high - you're driving it low, then pulling it back up. If for some odd reason you can't hit the intended target then you're just casting wrong.
      A tuck cast can be accomplished by literally stopping your rod at 12 o'clock and letting the flies flip over. You're trying to add a bunch of oomph to your cast by throwing your rod tip and flies down hard. You can even hear the whipping sound on video.
      This was all explained by Joe Humphreys literally 40 years ago in Trout Tactics. Go look at the diagrams in the book and see what a high rod looks like.
      Or watch Devin do it. You're basically doing what he says not to do. Your rod looks exactly like his at 2:55.

      @tightliningmd  Рік тому

      @@spikeconley I admire the depth you have put into the response. The easy route is to not provide insight, so for that I definitely give you credit.
      I used the word "troll" because there is a difference between this response and your first. This response actually might help me, or someone else. Your first was intended to backhandedly be rude. It does neither you nor I any benefit.
      I have watched Devin, Josh Miller, Domenick Swentovsky, George and those alike in the Euro-Centric Industry, I will watch the clip you sent over as well.
      As far as sound goes, I agree it is loud. I also agree it is unnecessary to hear it. Not to make excuses, but in post (editing) I had to blast the sound in some clips, specifically the one you are referring to. I did not have the luxury of an external mic/lavalier and was 20 feet from the camera. Therefore, in order to hear me I had to amplify all sounds, which makes it so you can hear me, but as a result also hear any rod motion. Typically a water loaded cast and focusing on a solid 180 principle, something Devin Olsen preaches, is a good starting point. I agree the whipping sound on an actual cast is not needed and is actually a cue you are likely putting too must force into your cast. I have no issue with it if you are using it to "clear/feed line" to prepare a forward cast. I am using Maxima Chameleon and many times, given it has no mass, it takes some level of effort to get that line our to begin the casting process. I have recently adapted to a micro leader and taking advantage of using some of the Euro Fly line being off the reel. This has benefitted the point you raised with sound.
      I don't claim to be perfect, nor omniscient. However, I definitely find myself to be always looking to learn and humble. Your second response is appreciated and thanks for taking the time to sculpt it.
      Regards and tight lines.
