Sir...while you had the Brace Selected use the Hot Key M and Hover over the Selection. You will see 4 Red X's appear with a Protractor. Click and Hold to Rotate the Selection.
@7:05 if you select both posts and then Right Click => Make Unique, it will make them unique to the other 4 posts but keep them as copies of each other.
Sir...Hot Keys Ctl G erases all Guide Lines and Ctl H undoes the Last Hide and Alt H undoes all Hides. If you have a Hide while in Edit you will need to be in Edit to use the Hot Keys.
@11:52 You forgot to flip along red line, the opposite plate. Mortises over there, were not exactly/properly aligned with tenons on braces ;) Well, at least by my project ;) Also the mortises in king posts are needed, but that's an easy fix :) Great tutorial, I'm binge watching all your uploads with pleasure. when building pockets for floor joists in the girt hide everything but the floor joists and the girt. select the girt and right click on it then select explode. Next select all the floor joists and right click on them and select intersect with model. Now hide the floor joists. this will put an outline of each joist on the girt that you can use push/pull to inset. Finally remake the girt into a component. Note: if you forget to explode the girt component the intersect with model will create lines that are not part of the girt and will not allow you to inset the pockets.
This is a great instruction. I do have a question, once this is all finished does each component have an actual dimension that can be used fir a cut list?
Firstly thanks very much for the tutorial it's been invaluable to me for designing my timber frame. I really appreciate it! Question: To copy the rafter your first entered the unit of movement and then entered the unit for how many times to move it then hit x. I've tried in a variety of ways to do this but am getting hit with an "invalid entry". Is there a specific setting you're in or any other detail? Thanks again!
M for move, holding Ctrl to copy. Start moving in your desired direction. Type the number for the desired distance to move, for example, "24", to go 24 inches, press enter Then hit "x7" to make 7 copies, for example.
Love the video..... but a question.... once you have the design, what is the easiest/best way to generate dimensioned drawings for all of the components?
I actually cover how to make a cutlist in another video. I typically don't bother creating drawings. I use the cutlist combined with a SketchUp viewer on and iPad. ua-cam.com/video/CuGGFEwqrg0/v-deo.html
I use an extension called "Cutlist". Unfortunately, they have cut support for the free version and shut down the extension warehouse. I guess I will need to switch to the paid version at some point.
@22:03 the middle girt that was deleted had the mortises centered and the replacement from the end ones have it aligned with the outer face... tenons wont line up
I'm glad you're watching closely, but I don't think you're right in this case. The mortises on the end girt are 1.5 inches from the rear end of the frame. The mortises on middle girt are 1.5 inches from the front end of the frame, so flipping the girt leaves them lined up.
@@SalemWoodworks Hmm.. I think I mistyped.. I meant the knee braces... but I still see where I went wrong... @1:25 you flip the entire assembly. Since the knee braces are only half the width of the posts/girts and the tenon is on the inside half, I figured that it would be off, because I missed what you mentioned at @1:42.. Now when you flip the copied girt, things line up. Very interesting geometry. Almost makes all the pieces interchangeable (wider knee braces, although overkill, would make do it)..

Sir...if you put your first Joist or Rafter into Layers you will not have to Select them all later. All Copies will go into Layers automatically.
