It may or may not be a coincidence, but I love how at 0:50 the lyrics say "Leave the sun behind me" and all we see is just a Combine soldier walking. It matches up so well, could be interpreted as the Combine soldiers leaving their humanity behind after being transformed into the biomechanic killing machines.

Maybe they are the first patch to get the next generation augmentations and armor join the overwatch ranks seen in Half-Life 2? Maybe they are so well distinguished troopers that they will become part of the elite corps? One for sure after that there is no coming back..

Man, I don't know what it is, but that shot has a strangely powerful effect on me. The music, framing and the trains going in opposite directions make the scene work so damn well. I keep coming back to this video for that specific sequence. Went to check the comments to see if I was alone.

0:18 I really like this shot here, just simply a CP unit looking at a photo of what I assume is family or friends, a reminder that Civil Protection units are still humans with unaltered minds of the Combine. These people that joined the ranks for promises of better food and protection of loved ones. Sometimes people must do bad things to make sure others are safer.

I love the shot at 1:04 where the grunt on the close left just looks at the light from outside as the door closes. Maybe I'm overanalysing but I like to think he's trying to stay in touch with what little humanity he has, but the door closes and the light fades, and so does his gaze towards it.

Like why no one is commenting about throwbacks to previous story videos from the author in this clip? Feels like nostalgia watching the aftermaths of tense events from the past
0:23 The ending of the PROTECTORS short
0:29 The camcorder is from A Tape From City 17 short, same scene was there
0:33 Interrogation of the rebel survivor from the ANTI-CITIZENS short
    0:38 INFESTATION aftermath
    0:41 ANTI-CITIZENS aftermath

The dropship heading towards the Citadel may be the one from one of the shorts, such as PROTECTORS. Many scenes are simply very well made and framed and only loosely tie into the Combine as a whole. The couple from A Tape From City 17 is shown prominently.

The line "and I'll watch the clouds as they sadly pass me by" fits very well in a depressing way. Stalkers are lobotomised, but there's likely some remnant of memory left in them. They see the world going past them as they continue their menial tasks, and deep within their altered mind is a twinge of bitter loneliness

This is above and beyond the best worldbuilding and throwback episode I've ever had the luxury of seeing. Building on characters and settings we've only ever seen for a single episode at best, and then using that as a medium to develop the world they live in. Even humanising the Combine to an extent in some places.
It even looks like we're swapping era, with more HL2-esque visuals in some places, a completed Citadel and what seems to be a regular HL2 Combine Soldier with a more bulky set of armour.
Never change your style, this is fucking fantastic and it leaves me wanting more.

Some interesting details I noticed while watching this video:
0:14 - Most likely the appearance of the "Initial Spire", which is basically the foundation of the citadel, built out of an unknown material, it has been delivered through some form of portal which Alyx (or whoever drew the diagrams on the marker white board in H-L:A) referred to as a "Perpetual Storm" (some kind of portal storm or a combine portal, not fully certain), the rest of the citadel was built from materials collected on earth, athough some different things which could not be made on earth were possibly still delivered through that. Worth noting that the huge hole which the citadel sits in was created shortly before or when the spire was delivered, basically the area of City 17 was completely removed without any debris, either was just teleported out or completely evaporated, in any case both methods probably involve getting as many materials as possible out of it- I don't think it's known if citizens were escorted from that location or not, I am quite sure that they would at least warn them about it, and if not, surely some Civil Protection or other combine units were at that spot and evacuated out of that area, would be possibly noticed or found out one way or another, there is a lot of things to speculate on this topic, and is surely a pretty fun topic for internet discussion.
0:22 - The Combine Ordinal and Supressor from the PROTECTORS animation leaving to be picked up by the dropship after killing the last Anti-Citizen.
0:26 - Scene from "A tape from City 17", we can see the camcorder laying on the roof, although it happens at a slightly different time, as the characters are sitting in a different spot instead of standing up (the scene in that animation can be seen at 1:12 ), this does mean the person on the left is the one who recorded everything.
0:33 - The only surviving Anti-Citizen from the ANTI-CITIZENS animation being tortured somewhere- most likely Nova Prospekt or some nearby Combine outpost.
0:37 - Zombified Combine Charger from the INFESTATION short.
0:41 - Conclusion of the ANTI-CITIZENS short, the Wallhammer is being moved out after having their whole body paralyzed- makes me hope they do make it out, it is rather safe to assume that they are alive since they are the first to be moved out of there- except for the Anti-Citizen obviously.
1:04 - Some random shot of Combine Grunts taking off in a container of a dropship, definitely not related to the PROTECTORS animation, as in that short, there were only two grunts, and one of them was killed.
1:11 - Absolutely beautiful shot of the Citadel with some really nice, high quality details, truly wallpaper material right there.

Watching all the callbacks to previous shorts makes it feel like I’m watching the last minute of a season finale to some anthology show, and I’m just waiting for the next season of more amazing stories.
And I think that feeling is a testament of just how well made your animations are, how they’re able to get me invested and hooked with just minutes of content. And the amount of detail and polish packed into those minutes is mind-boggling impressive.
You’re genuinely one of, if not the best doing it right now. Never stop.

Omg seeing more extra content from your previous work was so invigorating, like seeing what happened to the charger who got the head crab on him, the charger who got blown up and severely wounded and the guy who survived that charger getting interrogated etc. Your work on half life in s2fm has been a great experience, keep up your great work man
