Something simple that has been gnawing at the back of my head for a while.
With this I tried to mimic an old Hi8 camcorder look and sound as best I could. I also wanted to originally upload this in 480p; however, UA-cam assigns really garbage compression to SD which made it borderline unwatchable and that's why the original 480p has been upscaled to 4K.

IT'S ANIMATED?
If Harry101UK likes it you know it’s good.
I experienced the same
Plot twist: This is all real footage, so nothing to be impressed by here
Almost no game does dystopia better than Half-Life and this video perfectly captures the sheer hopelessness Half-Life portrayed in its worldbuilding (e.g. reducing food supply to make people more likely to collaborate, to eventually volunteer to be surgically altered into mindless soldiers)
Half Life's writing is so tongue-in-cheek that it's easy to forgot the world is so bleak. This makes it feel so real.
I am from Bulgaria, where the originals of many of the buildings seen in game are Sourced (ahue-hue) from. My country sadly does look like an apocalyptic wasteland. Most of my fellow countrymen look at it with disgust I however always found weird beauty in seeing decay, trying to decipher how things fell apart. That's why Half-Life especially Half-Life 2 and Alyx hit me slightly differently than most. Most people would look at Half-Life and think it's what the world could be 10 years from now, I look at it and I see what the world could be 2 minutes from now.
yeah i too sometimes see beauty in bleak surroundings when its cloudy
Not only that... just look at the buildings that are intact or partially destroyed... you notice a sad aura because you know that nothing is going to be the same... abandoned places and in poor condition due to lack of maintenance and what Most important: people. Places mixed with those rare alien technologies adapted for use by human Combine soldiers, pollution everywhere, Xen wildlife consuming life on Earth, the same the Combine with its great surreal black walls, silence, death, domination, control, all in a despot form, places that now seem like improvised military bases where before they were parks, houses, restaurants, streets, vacant yards, apartments, etcetera; those towering alien creatures allied or enslaved for various purposes of the alien Empire... and then, those alien constructions placed on top of human constructions just poorly to support themselves, as if it were a temporary support building... that mix of human brutalist art and alien with some cyberpubk, raypunk, oilpunk and biopunk.
@@NazarovVv It certainly isn't a coincidence that Valve set the dystopian stage of Half-Life among the old Communist Bloc architecture. One of the first things I've always thought of when it came to Half-Life's "grayness" atmosphere was the Soviet-era buildings, cars, and house-hold items (even the automated Russian intercom system heard in the Central Zoo level of Half Life: Alyx).
I loved the bit at the end. It's real easy to forget that a massive chunk of the Combine's military are in fact living creatures grafted with an ungodly amount of cybernetics, rather than simply being purpose built automatons.
I've never seen them personified like this but it's so good to see.
Actually, that’s not true. Synths are modified organic creatures that were scanned and recreated synthetically. Hence the name, Synths. Stalkers and Soldiers are predecessors to the Synth process.
@@jimjellyjinjamjimbo i don't understand how what you said makes what they said "not true"... I'm not being a jerk, I just don't see that they were wrong
@@jimjellyjinjamjimbo this is the first I'm reading of this, where is that information found, in-game or otherwise?
@@kevinbuchanan67 They’re implying that Synths are still living and are basically cyborgs or heavily augmented. They’re not, they’re like androids. Similar to Ash and Bishop from the Alien franchise or Roy Batty from Blade Runner. Oof that callback to “Protectors,” very nice touch. I love that you’re weaving a story between your other videos.
The attention to detail, quality of animations+sounds, level design, story telling ability through environment as opposed to dialogue… all so fitting to Half-Life. Really fantastic work

Spectacular job! What most people don’t realize is because the Seven Hour War occurred in the early 2000’s around the time of the first Half Life, all of our technology is still stuck in that 1990s-2000s era.
Cameras, computers, and recording devices were never improved upon and the digital age of smart phones and high definition resolution were never invented, due to civilization collapsing in this alternate timeline under the Combine Empire.

More pleaseeee
What you mean most? We've only been shown one, and I don't think there are many more, if there are more.
@@SirKolass I think the wastelands are the Balkans, the true wastelands are Australia, even if the combine “destroys” it,
*it always comes back*
@@evagineer9165 People misunderstand the wasteland though, the wasteland in the retail are all the places with human waste. That would be the coast, Ravenholm, ep2 forest, etc.
The barren wastelands are just part of it, we've only seen one and we don't know where it is.
People also think the flora is dying, but the flora is perfectly healthy in the retail, earth is not dying. The only thing that sure happened is the extinction of animals because of invasive xen wildlife.
The story, the animation, the custom levels, I can only say time and time again. That is absolutely incredible. Ever since I've seen consequences I've not seen a single more talented HL animator than you on this or any other platform.
Incredible too is the sound design, all the little details you thought of. Like the sounds of the man holding the camera, so on so forth. Sounds of cloth moving, the muffling, all of that.
What I like about this is, that it is not just gameplay with some filters on it and some acting. It's a god damn animation, hell yea.
This is definitely not something simple like you said. This is revolutionary, and would've looked crap in SFM 1. This is literally a ground breaking video it's SO cool I wish I had a platform so everyone in the world could see your channel... It's gonna happen sooner or later, but I would like that you get your roses sooner than later.
Thank you! I'm happy with a small audience that actually cares and loves these games as much as I do.
@@TheParryGod The world of Half-Life is one I've always wanted to see more of but never be subjected to. Marvelous work, man.
I love how subtle the camcorder effects are in this shortfilm. It's really hard to recreate without making it cheesy but this was done so well that it triggered lots of memories from the early 2000s for me.
Thank you! Managed to find some good references, haha.
Intentionally or unintentionally, I love how you included the fact the combine would split friends and family members when a person is relocated as shown by the train scene right after they were caught
Oh man! Between the whole splitting up of people so that they couldn't get attached and form relationships with one another to the usage of the dropship's classic hover noise as a reimagination of the noises that its biological side would make to the choreography of the whole thing! This right here is a labor of love that only the truest of a Half-Life aficionado could dream! Bravo! Cudos on the wasteland train sequence at the beginning, too!
Thank you :) I gotta say... I'm damn proud of those dropship noises, haha.
Its absolutely amazing to me how you tied it into all your previous shorts as well, with the bodies now rotting from the previous one in this tape
salio excelenta la escena perturbador.
This guy gets Half-Life. This world diverged from ours sometime between 1998 and 2003. VHS tapes would still very much exist, and not just as a novelty item in your garage. Also, glad to see someone still has cigarettes. Don't think I'd last 24 hours without one in this depressing world
Thank you!
A smoker will get his cigarettes even during an alien occupation, haha.
@@TheParryGod In that case I might make it 😂
You'd pretty much die then, the combine barely provides them enough food, let alone cigarettes 😆

This is probably the second time i've seen an Antlion in a S2FM animation, which i find odd. probably since animating them are a real challenge since the obvious anatomy of them, hind legs in the front and the front legs in the back.
5:02
As soon as i heard the Hunter, i began to panic a bit, before realizing there isn't a model for it *yet* in Source 2
someone needs to make a Source 2 Hunters. RIGHT, NOW.
Makes me think a hunter is stalking him… letting out a signal for the others to help move in for the kill. This is why you don’t go to the wasteland! You’re either gonna get eaten alive by antlions or get impaled/shot/stomped/ran down by combine hunters!
4:27 Holy shid, this is a reference to "Protectors" video. Damn, no one even cleaned that place after the shootout
It seems they took the rebels' weapons at least, but they left the wreckage of the destroyed manhack.
Well, they probably took the bodies of their own soldiers.
the scene where he records the other girl sleeping and says "hi" to her really hit me for some reason, it felt so realistic and it like felt so much like a real home movie, but set in like a hellish dystopia
great work, great fucking work!
This does such an absolutely fantastic job of exploring the living part of this world that the games pretty much mostly only hinted at beforehand. Valve always took a moment in both half life 1 and 2 to show how the living world is like; But afterwards, combat becomes the primary loop, which can't quite afford showing things like this off without potentially effecting pacing and gameplay. Half life alyx is slower paced AND in vr;It has the same moment of showing a living, breathing world in the beginning, but also with VR's unique pacing, it can afford to show off the environment more actively. Ya took a lot of the elements we were hinted and shown, and fleshed it out into a living breathing organism of its own. Absolutely love your work, fantastic imagination and execution dude!
Notice the two CPs. One has the newer voice lines and urges the civilian to return to his block. The other one uses the HL2 voice lines and warbles emotionlessly at him like a robot, droning on about a second and final warning, and then just immediately braining the civilian without hesitation even when the more human CP continues trying to warn him off.
Besides how fantastically animated this is, the idea behind it is amazing! How many people after the seven hour war would still have a semi functional camera? Could you imagine the sweet memories they had before they become entirely oppressed?
god... the sheer humanity present in this video. the way the recorder zooms in and moves around... the cigarette smoking, the cat, the reactions to the snark... it all feels so so real. the environments are all so beautifully rendered too.
This has the Oppressive atmosphere of Nazi-occupied lands, the feel of 70's-90's live-leaked recordings, and it's all so disturbingly well made.
Holy crap this brought the Half Life Universe to a whole new level! This brings a touch of realism to it. It really feels like someone recorded this with people reacting to things happening such as the Strider walking on the rooftop and breaking stuff.
Okay this is really goddamn cool, I also love the scene where the person behind the recordings visits the same place we saw in Protectors.
Phenomenal work as always!

That's a very neat concept of a video, soo well made! it gives a very realistic sensation of what it would like to be to live in a city under Combine's control. it's far more terrifying than we thought
I'm glad to see that they still have these careers in the future!
This is a pretty phenomenal animation, really immersive, great tone, incredible visual storytelling and I love the weird attention to detail, especially the antennae on the combine dropship. Were I there in real life, I too would be captivated by the weirdness of what I was seeing, despite the danger of where I was
It's crazy how real you made it look. The assets and stuff like that may be from Valve but, it takes real skill and effort to put it together the way you did.
Incredible! I love the attention to detail to small things like papers flying while the combine train passes by
Wow that train part was perfect it almost seems infinite, really captures the industrial might of combine
I wholeheartedly approve this upload we never ever see the perspective of an ordinary or normal citizen trying to live through the post collapse years facing the hardships and the alien rule on earth
4:40 Hey I remember this! The combine never bothered to clean the place
I honestly don't know if you'll be reading this or not... But don't stop with what you're doing. This is beyond amazing. Perhaps starting a series would be even better. Following a group of outsiders or unpredictable rebels. The potential is far reached. But the choice is yours.
I read every single comment. Thank you for the kind words. I don't know if I want to make a series out of this format. I pretty much told everything I wanted to with this. It's possible I'll make a found camcorder footage video in the future but that'll be a different story to this one.

The spectacular view of the wasteland is so beautiful, I wish it was a map for gmod. All of us are watching your career with great interest! The way the camera moves is so fluid and lifelike, even the characters! Can’t wait to see what’s next, maybe a Seven hour war S2fm?
I do 3D animation as a career, and I have to give you props for how absolute life-like the camera movements are. Doing "shakey-cam", and whatnot are incredibly difficult to do in a 3D engine. So kudos and props all around to you, TheParryGod
Thanks! Yeah getting that shake right never comes on the first try :d
Шикарная работа
This is so damn incredible, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a half-life sfm with this level of atmosphere. The train ride through the wasteland was a very nice touch being something that we don’t see much of, and the ending scene with the dropship simply looked beautiful and really had that half-life 2 ‘strangeness’ feel to it, not to mention the sound design throughout being very realistic.
Love this video so much, very good job!
This was by far one of the most amazing animations I have ever seen. Keep up the awe inspiring work!
This is amazing! One of the most immersive things I've seen made and all the things in the tape are excellent to see.
I especially love that at 4:22 you included the Aftermath of the dead rebels from that Combine Squad in your previous animation. Makes it all feel connected.
I’d love to see a continuation of the Ordinal and the Suppressor!
Maybe call it Backup!
Such attention to detail with the callbacks to previous installments such as the body's we see at 4:20, obviously in reference towards the film "Protectors". The detail goes even further with the body's being disfigured and aged to time. There's many other details and callbacks, but I said it before. I admire your work, attention to detail, and overall compassion for the Half Life universe.
3:45 Thats terrifying, sleeping in the middle of the darkness then to soon hear a sinister train roar and to see that passing by.
Can't express how amazing and inspiring is that! I wish you great art energy for your future works! I do really love your works espacially ambient ones with a lot of sudden details.
Спасибо за твой труд, благодаря таким талантам как ты удаётся не выгорать в творческой среде, потому что после просмотра подобных работ всегда знаешь к чему стремиться!
You can hardly tell the difference between reality and the game when it's done like this. I adore this
concept! Well done mate.
I know its been 8 days, but I have watched this, and I must say - this animations perfectly captures the life after the 7 hour war, and since Im a sucker for VHS tapes (Yes Im a boomer, bully me all you want), it was especially enticing to see how realistically it was recreated(The sound delay at the start, the sound, the sudden cuts). I felt like at the times, I was watching actual stuff happen on a tape! Not to mention, the sound design, its amazing. But here is one question that remains:
Who is watching this tape?
Bruh you are literaly the best SF2M creator I’ve seen in my life. Keep up the good work man!
Absolutely amazing work as always dude. Others have already covered how awesome this is (like the callbacks to Protectors and the worldbuilding) and I have to add I love how you portray the Combine CPs and OTA in a dystopian light that still retains a modicum of humanity. The drop ship (which by the way also gave character to something that has never had character before) getting repaired by the Grunts who are at ease and fill the role of an average joe, that’s just awesome. And the fact that the Suppressor is probably on the radio with Overwatch, maybe listening to battle reports, one might even say he’s frustrated by the delay. Whether any of that is true or not, the fact that you are capable of crafting a narrative that makes those potential stories in their own right is just fantastic. Bravo!
2:23 Gibril!
3:05 that cat would be gone
Nice that you shown the aftermath of the Protectors SFM in the video.
I didn’t know I needed an analog horror type half life 2 video until I saw this. This interpretation of a citizens view on city 17 and the combine rule is beautiful. It makes you feel like a combine invasion has happened in the past and makes it seem absolutely terrifying. Saying you raised the bar on half life animations would be an understatement. Amazing work yet again. Also the callback to protectors was a very nice touch.
Absolutely astonishing work, as usual! I really love this exploration of the HL2 universe, and the way you show different parts of the world that focus on the daily lives of humanity is really cool. I especially liked the damaged dropship scene because it's like a tiny glimpse into the daily operations of combine soldiers in the field, and the "vocalizations" were a really nice touch.
I've been wanting to make HL2 animations for absolute ages but have never found the time to work on a big project. You seem to be putting these out at a super fast pace, how long does it take you to make an animation like this? (And what's your secret at getting them out so fast?)
Probably more accurate to just call them HL animations now, rather than HL2 animations, right? But yeah, it's really cool to see that "slice of life" element here. HL:Alyx did just the same as the previous games and gives you that brief glimpse into the day to day nature of peoples lives in the setting, but same as 1 & 2, it doesn't last too long before you're off running with a gun in your hand. But the parts where you do get to stop and observe were all the more powerful for being there "in" the world directly. Am really curious how much HL3 might expand on things. The dropship scene here reminds me a little of the scene with the two combine and the downed strider.
4:21 I noticed how you tied PROTECTORS into this, love it! Can't wait to see the story build up.
You get Half Life in a way a lot of people don't. I love how you could see the suppressor getting pissed off he's stuck there, I love how people are treating the snark as a very large bug because at that point it is just a very large bug, I love the quiet moment of the guy just walking around with nothing in particular happening, and I love that in the middle of all that is that cat because of *course* the humans still love the cat despite all that's happening.
The mini-story hooked me, and the animation is so good. I think you should make movies :)
4:38 are those the citizens from the “Anti-Citizen” short???
I love it. It has that 90s/2000s home video feel to it.
4:44
Protectors reference?
Yep
Grade A sweet. Youre bringing amazing worldbuilding to a universe in desperate need of it. Sometimes it's not about the star-spangled heroes or villains that make a universe great. Its the civilians, the foot soldiers, the equipment and machinery, everything ties together. It's why Rogue One was the best Star Wars film.
Never stop, this art is too good.
This makes the whole combine events in half life seem so believable. Like it could've actually happened to us...
It's so damn eerie!
Amazing work! Subscribed!
Those travel vlogs are getting wild.
So many SFMs have that weird unpolished look to them but this is honestly amazing
L'M REALLY LOVE IT SO MUCH AND ANIMATION IS SO COOL AND FEEL SO REAL L HOPE THE CAMERAMAN IS STILL ALIVE. ❤️😄😔👍
Remember camera always survive.
This has got to be my favourite Half Life short of all time. The most fascinating thing about the world to me is what the life of everyday people is like, rather than the main storyline. Like what is it like for the citizens of City 17 day to day, constantly beat down, constantly deprived, and yet still banding together and finding a way, finding hope in the small things. It's the constant presence of this that made me love playing through Half Life 2 and this captures it perfectly. Also the sound design is INCREDIBLE!!
Glad you enjoyed it! I also adore the subtext of these games much much more than the main plot.
The only thing that would keep me occupied is probably getting a job with the Civil Workers Union of C17

it's a great job, I don't remember anything like that. All your animations are very well done
Omg, I really love this ! 4:30 it's after the "Protectors" video
Holy shit, good catch.
if I'm correct, at 4:25 that is the aftermath of the shootout between the rebels and the combine in Protectors and if so that is so awesome yet sad to see what's left is decomposing corpses.
Isso está brilhantemente magnifico, dou meus parabéns pelo belo trabalho com isso.
0:13 is that half life beta introduction scene?
Perfect. Loved the Easter egg showing your past animation with the corpses. And the cat being happy in her arms was so heartbreaking when the combine burst through the door.

This is such a well made video! From the quiet and small voices, to the animation, to the sounds of the camera moving and every thieves in between! Well done!
Sometimes the best narration is no narration. It lets the story speak for itself and you did great on that!
since that was the end of the tape, you could assume the citizen was killed for trespassing, but maybe if they simply surrendered then they got the camera taken away from them.
I love you.

This is perfect. This combines two of my favorite things: VHS horror and Half-Life. You are amazing.
