“Rally round the family with a pocket full of shells” he is speaking about the military industrial complex which our country spends billions on while children go without food and clothing.
Rage flew under the radar of the authorities in the 90’s. My personal opinion is that their fans were mainly white kids, and the band is made up of several different races. Mean time NWA ( all black group) was preaching a similar message and getting hassled by the cops every show …..why? A group of all black young men with a fan base of mainly black teens was challenging the powers that be.
Rage was big in the early to mid 1990’s.

Rage Against the Machine made great music. I love Bombtrack and Down Rodeo. Some great grooves. Although sometimes they start with a great groove, then move to a new more up tempo part and never return to the original groove. You should also check out the live cover of Bulls On Parade by Denzel Curry. I appreciate the enthusiasm and energy he put into his performance. Definitely check out more Rage though...

Another great reaction to to the best rap-metal band of all time (lead by one of the best conscious rappers of all time - along with British rapper Akala). Zack’s rap style and lyrical approach was very much inspired by Chuck-D of Public Enemy. And Zack and Chuck collaborated a few times during Live shows. Then more recently the rest of the band were part of a ‘supergroup’ called ‘Prophets of Rage’ with Chuck-D and B-Real from Cypress Hill. Zack also did a track with one of his other old skool rap heroes, KRS-One from BDP, on a track called ‘C.I.A (Criminals In Action)’.
You being born in 2000 makes me feel old man, lol. I still feel 25 but sometimes forget I’m 47 now. 😂

@@MrNerdyBrit I always called them “Rap-Metal” because that’s what everyone called them since they came out in the early 90’s. Tom Morello refereed to it as “Rap-Metal” in a Kerrang interview too. But like most decent artists they blend numerous music styles and genres, most notably Rap/Hip-Hop with metal, punk and funk.

If you're interested, after they broke up Zach had a (semi) solo project called One Day as a Lion that was pretty decent (very..lo-fi. Good but not as intense). He's also had some fairly well recognized shit with Run The Jewels (even though he was pretty much the chorus guy) and did some shit with DJ Shadow that was pretty cool.
Famously, every other member of RATM founded Audioslave with the singer from Soungarden, and they were mostly pretty alright. Like A Stone and I Am The Highway are both pretty classic. They broke up too.
They also formed a band with Chuck D called Prophets of Rage, bur they only lasted one album.
Tom (the guitarist) is now mostly a pretty decent folk singer. His shirts good but nothing like Rage.
As for the rhythm section, as far as I know their bassist retired after Prophets, and their drummer kinda settled in as a session artist.

To answer your question, it has been confirmed that the FBI had an open file on Zach (their lead singer)
They made live protest videos on their last album (Battle for LA). One of them was Sleep Now in the Fire (which I think paused the new York stock exchange) and guerilla radio which was in front of the democratic national convention (I may have those reversed)

Ummm... for a glimpse into their activism check out the song "Sleep Now in the Fire". "Rally Around the Family" was a slogan that was being used by politicians in the 90s to garner support for traditional American values. RAGE used it to point out the hypocrisy of them "caring about the people" yet they continue to spend an exorbitant amount of tax payer's money on the military industrial complex, instead of things like housing, food, clothing, education, etc. So they "rally around your family, with a pocket full of shells". The "bulls on parade" has multiple meanings, first and foremost the bull market aka the stock exchange where these kind of deals are made with company's like Lockheed Martin but also the colors red and black are traditionally the colors of the Anarchist Movement, so RAGE was trying to rally their own bulls to parade against the politicians. RATM wasn't just another band, they were a movement. ✊

Be careful when you say "fighting for the people." The imagery in this video harkens to Chinese Communist propaganda as well as Soviet propaganda videos. The big red flag flying over the monument is meant to recall the Soviet taking of the Berlin Parliament(?) building during World War II. The famous original film itself being staged. The red star insignia on the album cover(?) displayed at the beginning and end of the video is a dead giveaway along with all the red flags. Why is this a problem? Well, the Soviet Union went on to conduct purges that killed untold thousands and ethnic cleansing programs that resulted in 30 million dead amongst its own people. Mao's communist China policies added another 60 million dead through starvation alone. When you go this far to the left, it surpasses most people's tolerance for the minimums of basic humanity. And yet today there are still people who refuse to look at the destruction these ideologies caused.
Recently the band broke up (as it had multiple times before) due to what the bass player called irreconcilable differences, politics being the only one he specifically referenced--as one might expect when dealing with people who hold such extremist views, which for many become uncompromising. I know you're probably not aware of the background to all this and why so many people refer to them as "controversial." Maybe someone else with better background knowledge could list some occurrences of institutional blow back from these views, but the only one I know of is just people expressing what I just did above. One thing young people today always get wrong is that somehow everything that occurred prior to them happened in a societal context something akin to the 1950s. The last elements of that sort of construct pretty much was dead by the early 70s and never came back. Nobody was censoring music by writ of any institution by then (unless you dive deep into conspiracies or some one-off occurrence that a person might suggest as being emblematic in any way of the times.)
    Aside from that, great music.

nah. You are TOTALLY missing it. This has to do with the Zapatista (google the flag) movement. De La Rocha comes from a long line of Mexican revolutionaries fighting for justice and Indigenous sovereignty. The lyrics in this song are pointing to the way in which the colonial governments historically and (currently) attempt to take down the family unit, as Indigenous stability is a direct threat to the colonial agenda.
