This video provides instructions on how to replace an automotive battery in a 2014 -2018 GMC Sierra. The process covered in this battery replacement tutorial will be the same or similar on many other vehicles including Chevy Silverado, Tahoe, Yukon and more. In this video, I replaced the existing engine compartment battery on my 2014 GMC Sierra with an H7 battery from Walmart.
Chilton Manual Instructions for Post Battery Replacement Procedures
Enabling The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) To Relearn After Replacing the Battery
- After the battery has been reconnected, perform the following procedure in order to facilitate PCM relearning.
- Start the engine and allow it to warm up to its normal operating temperature.
- Drive the vehicle at part-throttle, under moderate acceleration and idle conditions, until normal performance returns.
- Park the vehicle and apply the parking brake with the engine running.
- Depress the brake pedal and put the shift lever in Drive.
- Allow the engine to idle for about two minutes, or until the idle stabilizes. Make sure that the engine is at its normal operating temperature.

Resetting Power Windows, Sunroof, and Electric Power Steering After Battery Replacement
- Power Windows: Sit in the vehicle with all of the doors closed. Operate each window (one at a time) to the fully open position, then raise the window until it is closed and hold the switch in the UP position for two seconds.
- Sunroof: Open the sunroof completely, then close it completely.
- Electric Power Steering (EPS): Sit in the driver's seat and start the engine. Turn the steering wheel completely counterclockwise, then completely clockwise, then back to the center.

Remember the good old days when changing a battery was a 10 minute job and all you needed was an adjustable wrench? Good times

You’re definitely right, changing a battery is not as straightforward as it used to be! Your video made this job much, much less intimidating.
Great instructions, Mark. Made this SO quick and easy to do. One tip that worked better for me: instead of removing the top bolt on the vertical brace, I removed the two from the horizontal brace and the one on the battery tray and removed them together as an assembly.

Just replaced the battery in my ‘14 Sierra….really not as bad as some make it out to be. Don’t take the reservoir out…it’s not even remotely necessary. Lay the buss bar brick over as directed in the video and tip the battery over and yank it out…..doesn’t even have to be laid down….just tip it a bit….thanks for the video.

Thanks Mark, I was worried about replacing the battery myself because my Uncle who had an almost exact same truck as I do (2015 GMC SIERRA 1500 5.3L V8 4X4 CREW CAB) ran into issues with the computer system and ended up taking it in to GMC to get fixed. Luckily, after watching your video and confidently swapping my own battery out, all was good. I didn't notice needing to do all the computer re-learning steps... But I did them anyhow. Thanks for the video and detailed step by step directions!
Nice video. Thanks. I helped replace my son’s battery on 2014 sierra. I removed both cables towards firewall. Gave me more access! Only GM would make battery more difficult to replace than necessary! Again great video! Really helped us!

Good stuff….a trick I use is a small bungy cord to hold the Fuse block back and out of the way.
I did same way with my 2015 sierra. Also took out bolt to antifreeze tank next to battery. Moved it a few inches from battery for more room.
Holding the "mega fuse box" back with a small bungee cord would be a lot easier there. Instead of it constantly flopping back in your way.

To make it easier to remove and replace the battery (if the battery has no handle) use a ratchet strap rigged around the center of the battery once it is disconnected from the holder tray. Circle the battery with the strap and tighten it. This will give you something to hold onto to take the battery in/out.
Excellent video! However, there’s two tensioner clips on both sides of the mega fuse box!!!! I found it easier to just remove all bolts and and then tension clips. Will pop right off, just remember to take a picture to remember where everything goes
Great video! I had to remove the nut to the coolant tank to get the battery out. Other than that no hiccups.
Thanks. Helpful to bungee cord the plastic box top towards the drivers side to keep it out of your way, and a VERY LIGHT dab of dielectric grease on terminals and threads you removed/installed.

A bungee cord on the fuse box thing that covers the top of the battery would help pull that away and keep it away so you wouldn't have to keep messing with it

Was about to attemp to change my battery after watching this video I realized it’s worth it paying to get it done. Auto zone / advance auto all ran away from changing battery after I bought it 😞
I have switched both batteries. Now I'm looking for the post install links you talked about at the beginning to reset and recalibrate. I can't seem to find them. Radio, some lights, and windows not working.
FYI all hardware is Metric 13mm and 14mm sockets
and 10 mm for battery posts

Lower bracket and upper bracket bars can be removed as one assembly. Also the coolant bottle can be moved by removing bolt at base near battery. AND NO BOLTS ARE SAE SIZES, ALL BOLTS, NUTS, ETC., USED ON GM FOR THESE MODEL YEARS ARE METRIC. I believe the bracket bolts are 13mm others are 10 and other. AGAIN, ALL BOLTS ARE METRIC. Not a warm fuzzy feeling watching the rest of this video.
I have an 18 Sierra and I had to remove one of the bolts holding the coolant overflow tank and flex the tank as I removed the old battery and installed the new one. Just barely enough room. Nothing is simple anymore.
I did mine w/o removing it, and I should've. It was an enormous pain getting the new one in.

So all the really important stuff your not going to talk about..WTF dude I removed thd negative battery cable per instructions for the work I am doing.Now after hooking it back up truck won't start do to security crap.Thats the kind of info folks need.How to plan ahead and fix real problems
Removed brace and turned battery sideways, no problem
H7 is factory but H6 works fine and is 100% easier to put back in
I held them side by side at the store and they were the same size. Certainly the H7 is heavier though.
you dont have to remove any of the buss bar lugs. just remove each terminal and lift up out of the way.
Yep that's what I did then anchored it out of the way.
Hi mark, I changed it and accidentally hit One of the mega fuse box bolts with the ratchet and it made a spark now the truck doesn’t want to turn on with the new battery do you have any idea what it could have been?

Thank you so much for the video. How did you do it to save the programming on the truck before you took the battery off? I was told that you have to save the memory on the vehicle before disconnecting battery.
No wires need to be removed from the buss box. Just disconnect from the battery....DUH!

H6 or H7. I put an H7 in mine, AGM.

Thankfully you only have to do it at most every 5 year, realistically though every 7 or 8.
