2020 KTM 890 Duke R Review | MC Commute

- KTM elevates its parallel-twin-powered middleweight platform with the introduction of a new up-spec and hot-rodded 2020 KTM 890 Duke R. The R-badged 890 ($12,439 as tested) builds upon the 790 Duke’s pedigree and cranks up the volume on the sport department for apex-staffing riders who want to go fast with added control.
--
As always, we’re big fans of the 890 Duke R’s ergonomics with it skating the fine line between sport and comfort. The 890 is slim between the rider legs with plenty of room for a 6-foot-tall rider. The lack of a front fairing is a strike for riders who log serious freeway miles. Still we value its wide and adjustable position handlebar and control levers. Night riders will appreciate its bright LED headlamp that does a fantastic job of illuminating desolate roads.
A color TFT display keeps tabs on machine vitals and generally performs well on the road. An ambient light sensor automatically adjusts brightness and includes a “night mode” (white fonts on a black background). KTM’s newly developed MTC (Motorcycle Traction Control) adds a degree of control. Hardcore sport riders will want the $739.99 Tech Pack which includes an electronic quickshifter enabling clutchless up- and downshifts.
More importantly it adds a “Track”-specific riding mode which allows the rider to tweak throttle response independently of traction control slip adjust (nine levels of adjustment, four was our favorite for sport riding). The rider can also disable wheelie control and enable launch control.
With a fully fueled curb weight of 407 pounds, the 890 Duke R feels light whether at a standstill or in motion. Higher-spec suspension affords a high degree of sport aptitude on twisty canyon roads. However, it comes at a price. Over bumpy surfaces, you’ll feel bumps through the controls. Still, the 890 doesn’t ride as roughly as most liter-and-above-sized sportbikes.
Powered by a hot-rodded version of KTM’s LC8c, the punched-out twin is vastly more smooth than the 799cc mill. A heavier crankshaft and fuel mapping do wonders to reduce vibration and add a degree of polish missing in the 790 Duke. It’s faster too, to the tune of 106 hp-11 more than the 790.
Fuel-mileage-wise we recorded a 40.1 mpg average at a relatively elevated street pace. The engine drinks from a 3.7-gallon fuel tank. The engine is a gem of a powerplant, however the function of the mechanical slipper clutch could be better. It’s also worth noting that the Tech Packs adds Motor Slip Regulation (KTM-speak for engine-brake control) where the throttle bodies continue to fuel the engine during acceleration for a theoretically improved deacceleration character.
A stronger and more potent set of hydraulic brakes keep speed in check. Riders who value brake feel will appreciate the fitment of the adjustable lever ratio MCS radial master cylinder by Brembo. Cornering ABS function with the ability to manually disable rear abs for slides is a welcome feature.
If you were shopping for a 790 Duke, you’d be a fool not to buy KTM’s 890 Duke R, especially considering its $1,000 upcharge. Better in every way, the 890 Duke R is the middleweight naked bike the Austrian brand should have introduced from the get-go and a bike that will be appreciated by riders who wish to burn rubber on the street.

Yep getting one when I get my new job. Thx for the great comments
hi what is the closest bikes to this bike?
"Street setting for optimal performance doing wheelies" - great consumer advice.
one of the best motorcycle i have ever owned. First KTM, always been wary due to reliability issues. But this bike on paper was such a perfect combination of weight power functional fun hooligan combination that decided to take the leap of faith. And it absolutely paid off. Simply too good that i even decided to open a youtube channel to go and tell the whole world what a gift of motorcycle god this machine is. Made out of the ribs of supermoto angel and infused with some race wine. It might leak and break a bit in future, i never know. But i be smiling every time i ride it whtr its in the canyons on racetrack or even on the way back from the dealer every time i have to visit.
Also first motorcycle I risked buying new new, alway bought slightly used or left over to save lot of money. This one I have a feeling depreciation will be high impact but I am not depressed. The price is well worth considering the component like stylema brakes alone are in the thousands and not to mention only middle weight bike with IMU
@@superscalpel2268 Congrats, dude! Are you located in North America ?If you are, I was wondering, given that KTM and Husqvarna's Warranty for Brand New Bikes in North America does not include Electronics (it does in Europe for example), did you get an additional warranty or did you not bother? That is the reason why I will not get one, you should not pay for something that should come by default.
Kareem Alcindor yes in NA, I did not get it, I am hoping it will be alright. It’s not like it has electronic suspension which can be quite expensive, crossed 🤞 hope it will be alright
LOL
Kareem Alcindor That wives tail is a myth. 15 KTM's over 11 years--covered entire wire harness on my 1190 Adventure--no questions.
Aw hell yeah!!! $750 for the dlc.
BMW is by far the worse, they sell the god damn trip computer apart, so not even engine temp.
I don't know if there are software differences in track mode but a lot of companies sell the ecu mod apart. It would be interesting to tell why because making software is expensive but not that expensive.
@@licenciadoleopoldocanoloza1144 yeah I'm with ya, once its made its made, its not like your buying actual parts its already there it just needs a little electricity 🤪👍
@@snarkylive dude a 10k f800r just have a clock, not even rpm indicator or it just don't turn on. Its a nice motorcycle but it is as expensive as a car and is a jerk move to not even have a little of equipment. I would never bought that but it was a nice gift from my university graduation
Is this bike an "EA" version of bikes lol ?!
Lmao
So the bike has unlockable upgrades, hidden behind a pay wall? Is this a video game or just KTM stuffing a few fingers up the consumer's butt?
Epic!
Yeah we need some OS guru to break into the ECU computer to unlock this stuff free of charge!
BMW also does this with some of their models
Did I hear right? Wheelies are disabled unless you pay KTM to unlock the antiwheelie?
It also has a tool kit caddy, and for a fee they'll send you the key. Loud "give me a ticket" orange wheels are free!
So many superb bikes in this segment, I look at reviews of long time owners, issues and problems with any model and dealer network. I chose the Triumph Street triple RS 765, it pays to research then test ride. What a great job you have reviewing these bikes.
I've never heard of anyone who didn't like 790. It was universally praised as a fantastic bike. Surprised to hear that Adam didn't like it
Just google "KTM 790 problems" and you will find plenty of people who didn't like it. ;)
I watched Adam’s MC Commute video of the 790 and didn’t hear him complain much so I’m surprised by his comments also. I guess as a motorcycle marketeer he is always flogging the latest and greatest
He referred to the 790's "unfinished engine" ... what an asinine comment, it was highly praised by almost every reviewer. Mine has 11,500 trouble-free kms on it now - not bad for an "unfinished engine!"
@@Szlejer The 790 has far less problems than a lot of people I know.
I believe his point is that, since he literally gets to ride everything, that the 790 isn't his favorite when compared to the other bikes similar to it, esp when you consider price, reputation, lifetime cost, specs, etc. Plus it's displacement was somewhat odd comparatively.
"It's not my fault officer this bike doesn't have cruise control" 😂
I bought one. For those who think "expensive"--compare this (WITH Track Pack $12,500) to the top flight Street Triple. Pretty close. You can omit the track pack and save $750. But with Street Triple--you must buy a whole different model if budget is a concern. You can decide later if you want it with the KTM. No need for a new bike.
Next compare it to Ducati Hypermotard-950--the top shelf one as this suspension is competitive to that. $16,000!! But 890R is 8 hp more and 40 pounds lighter. Which is why I waited for this. Pretty happy. Fun, fast and flickable.
Then remember the original Superduke 990? $14000 and made several "bike of the year" awards and it was down 6 hp and 49 pounds heavier. Zero electronics available..
Summary: It's fairly priced and very fun. A Goldilocks sporty street bike: Just right. I traded in a Superduke SDR 1290--btw. No regrets so far. Oh--I still have a Superduke GT 1290 to ride the Mrs on--I tricked her! ;)
good point. the bikes KTM now makes are the best ever. I have a 1190 ADV R. Thrilled with it. Best bike ever for me. Came from Sportbikes and Nakeds. Last bike was a Suzuki BKing
Why did you trade in the 1290 sdr?
@@Magnus-pm7ic Because you rather ride a "slow" bike fast than a "fast" bike slow? Most people will be close riding whatever the 890r can give rather than nothing of what the 1290 SDR can give..
Bar Schneider Mizrachi Pretty much that. Plus I grabbed a GT1290 for riding with wife so that basically is a SDR--with bags/windscreen. Thought the 890R sounded like a great-just right bike with lightness that no amount of Power can change. I have bought 19 bikes in 12 years. I like experiencing various configurations and types of bikes out there.
Magnus0083 It's complicated. Traded in a Adventure S 1290 for a SD GT--for when I want THAT motor punting me down the road--plus a two-up bike that was downsized physically from the Adventure, as I ride my wife and I am only 5'7"--she just 5'0". So "honey--we shrunk the bike". Then I sold the SDR to get the just right 890R as a solo blaster. So I still have a Superduke--GT--but shifted down in size one click on each bike.
This bike is definitely moving things in the right direction for the middle weight segment.
You mean right back to the sportbikes they replaced?
Very good video. Every aspect is improved from the last one I watched, admittedly quite a while ago. Keep up the good work.
Great review. Adam is the best reviewer of motorcycles on UA-cam.
Agreed
"This bike benefits from an uneven firing order" just like pretty much every twin engine that isn't an older BMW
or older triumphs
Or the ninja 400/300 or the R3
I hear KTM have made vast improvements in reliability. You only have to replace the head gasket every thousand miles.
Lol 👏🤣🤣
Nice sarcasm but this isnt 2012 anymore lol
#1reason for reliability issues: india
@@user-jt6nw6wm5q At the moment the 890 is still produced in Austria.
@@user-jt6nw6wm5q I'm an Indian. And am angry at you! -_-
Haha.. i ride a Yamaha made in India. Its a true Yamaha for the price.
Amazing video, but I would love to see a 950 Hypermotards review. PLEASE HYPERMOTARD NEXT VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the wheelie test is all i wanted to see, good job
So the HCU failure occurs when you try to activate the heated grips without having the module installed, I can't remember specifically how I was able to disable it, but it's definitely somewhere in the settings, bugged me for awhile before i figured it out.
790 owner. It is absurd to talk as though the 790 is a slug compared to this. a small bit faster. a bigger bite on the brakes... a lot more money. cruise control is the only thing I miss. a little levity please on dogging the 790, and they are dirt cheap now to boot. would I upgrade. no way. only a pro rider could ring out the difference in performance. my .02
This happens every time a new bike comes out. Rant and rave how good it is then the upgrade comes along and all of a sudden its shite.
I get so sad when I watch these MC commutes and I hear him say "oh heres a turn!" and you see the only "turn" on his commute is a highway off ramp. Lane splitting looks amazing, and I know there are great twisty roads nearby in the mountains, but I'm thankful to live somewhere that a normal commute involves plenty of turns and hills.
Josh DeMarco most testers and moto vloggers ride these amazing bikes in the city. It sucks lol I live so close to deals gap and all these super curvy mtn roads. We are lucky! I should be a bike reviewer lol
Bastard
My commute involves zero corners. But at least it is only 10 miles, and I just ride my bicycle.
@@JoshuaTootell I miss my bicycle commute. I moved to the suburbs and am stuck driving every day now. Really makes me appreciate how nice it was just biking back and forth to work.
As a 701 Supermoto owner, this bike is the only machine that makes me bike-curious.
i was wondering how the difference would be in small curves in the mountains....? The Husqvarna is a powerful one
Here is the Pike's Peak International Hill Climb on a 701 supermoto.

If you need to go faster than this up mountain roads, I want to party with you Rockstar!
Great reviews, keep on rolling, man!!
Can’t wait to see that engine in the ADV lineup.
Ikr
Norden 901
Husqvarna needs to make a Vitpilen 801/901
From what I've heard, the 790 will continue in the ADV bikes and probably in the Duke. The 890R is an "R" option in the midsize Duke range. I think they may offer 890 options in an SM-T or something along those lines. Also, evidently a Duke 490 twin coming.
I need a new Super Enduro, just imagine this engine in it!
The best middle weight bike I ever owned .
I hope you get to fight vampires or something in that $750 expansion pack.
Motorcycles need WiFi updates.
lol, indeed
I cant wait to pick one of these up for $5K in a year
Hahaha yeah i wish 😂
Got mine, traded in my 790 for all the up grades on the 890. Best bike i ever owned. Its my 17th bike and its the best. If you are cheap get the base model. If you go to the track like me, get loaded and let errrrr rip. Electronics are sick. Spinning up in the corners is rad
It's everything the 790 should have been from the outset, fantastic package for the money.
Disagree. There's a reason both the 790 and 890 are being sold together. It's like a regular version of a sports car and a more performance version. They both exist for different buyers and it offers you a choice. 790 is just fine the way it is. And if you don't like it, the 890 R exists. What else do you want?
Different buyers? Come on....
@@Angry-Lynx absolutely different buyers, comparing these two bikes is like comparing apples and oranges. There's a substantial price difference, and then you have to pay through the nose for the electronics that come as standard on the 790.
@@markl823 it's 850$ (the electronics )dude
Adam has come a long way on delivering his reviews. I still liked the recent commute by Michael Gilbert, but this is so much better than Adam's first few commutes...
KTM ergonomics typically work well for me - but their seats are padded with plywood!
agree, ... seat of my duke 390 (2020 BS6) is as hard as wood, ... breaks the butt
Excellent review. Always enjoy riding with you, Adam. Thanks. And great hair!
Puff
"ECU failure, not sure what that means"- lol
Lol my 390 used to do the same thing.
It means you’re riding a KTM. Electrical gremlins are par for the course.
@@SWTrailsAndWheels $12K for this bike seems pretty rich, especially w/ gremlins. Don't get me wrong I like the looks, but the value proposition compared to what else is available in that price range doesn't seem great.
No man. "HCU." Not ECU.
HCU is the Headlight Control Unit. There are 2 things that may have caused it, something obstructing the sensor or the firmware needs to be upgraded.
Did you ride the 1290r Adam, can you even compare the Beast and the mini Beast Just another great review bud as i have gotten to expect from you, was that a clutch up wheelie, i thought it was capable of a power wheelie
It would be great to see a side by side comparison of the 790/890 for those of us who are considering upgrading. You say the suspension is rough on choppy pavement but is it about the same or worse then the 790? I'm assuming slightly worse since the 790 has progressive wound springs and the 890 being a bit more focused. I ride a lot of rough country roads so that's kinda a big deal to me. Also I love my 790 but after 3,700 miles and 9 months it has a oil leak around the valve cover and the forks started getting small rust spots at the bottom. Never seen that on any bike I've owned before. Still going to keep it or upgrade to the 890, trust me it's that good that it's worth dealing with little problems even though we shouldn't have to.
I understand it was to increase stiffness and reduce weight but I really wish they would do a trellis frame and subframe like on the 2017 1290
Same bro, i think sd 1290 is the prettiest bike and the 790/890 are really ugly imho
I was going to buy the 890 this past weekend, but after seeing the 2020 1290 SDR sitting right next to it, I rather wait till years end, save some more monies and buy the latter.
Love the KTM street products, but I still don't trust the brand. How many have a KTM with more than 30k miles without issues...(?)
hankgs I have a 2016 1290 gt. Bought it new and have 23k on it. Never had a hiccup.
@@whiteywhiteman6317 That's encouraging to hear...
Just try them, go for a ride and you will forget and forgive all the issues... Its like with ferrari of bike world... They are a little more maintenance heavy but have character, and give so much more fun
I can hear your voice vibrating while on the highway, is it just me?
i love parrelle twins on the street keeps the bike light and thin
Can’t wait for this engine to be in an adventure bike
My only issue is that it looks just the same like 790 and even similar to 390 . I mean u r paying more so u do want to be noticed differently than smaller bikes
Really being noticed is something you like huh, wow what character
Yes i do. Specially when I'm putting my hard earn money for it , u can deny it but u will feel bad if it gets compared with duke 390 by ur friends n work colleagues.
That’s why it has the white “R” paint job, and coming from someone who owns a 790, I am extremely envious of that paint job/livery. Been contemplating buying a second fairing set to wrap white for a while, and now I want to even more.
That seemed like a fairly quick commute 😉
I was just thinking..."that might be a new record"😁🏍
I Love this channel, and I love your reviews. Very informative!
It is hard to ride motorcycles at the speed limit because assholes in cars are constantly tailgating you.
When I trade in my 390 Duke, this is what I would want, for sure.
Man! You need to let the ECU boot properly before hitting the start button! Did anyone notice?
Also ECU failer isn't a good thing. An engine control unit, also commonly called an engine control module is a type of electronic control unit that controls a series of actuators on an internal combustion engine to ensure optimal engine performance.
"Better electronics"
Look Up your shit, thats Not true
Once bitten, twice shy... I can’t trust ktm after a 790 riddled with problems :(
I ride and race a Vitpilen 701 and also own a 690 Enduro. I have had reliability issues with the Vitpilen and cancelled my order of an 890 Duke r in favour of a Panigale V2.
does anyone else get bothered by the fact that Adam doesn´t allow the bike to do the checks and immediately turns on the bike?
And then wonders why there's an error message on the dash!
Another great video!!!! KTM 890 Duke R or Triumph Street Triple RS? Thank you
890 has way more torque!
I would consider the KTM over my ST, but I gotta say the triple sounds way better than this 2 cylinder engine. I would miss that sound
Triumph every day
RS is my choice. Premium looks, triple cyclinder, probably more refined and reliable
I love it! I'm going fast because I don't have cruise control! No you don't have wrist control! I know what you mean, some bikes have a mind of their own!
Esp orange twins 😍😍😁
I got an Aprilia Shiver 750 and have been thinking about upgrading to a KTM 1290 R for the longest but I don't need all that power. The 750 is already a great ammount abut I desire just a tiny bit more.
This looks like a good option but I'd never be able to afford it with the way things are going.
HCU Failure already? Guess that's just an ABS issue..
I wish ktm did a little more to finally get out of this 'unreliable bikes' stigma...
And what we have? Production in china, and lot of little issues in newest orange twins
@@Angry-Lynx Yeah, if there is going to be issues, I might as well go Italian.
@@Angry-Lynx This bike is not produced in China, at least not yet. My 890 vin starts with a V, which is the country code for Austria
17:12 can someone explain wtf happened ???
Do you like it more than the F900R? Here in Mexico the F900R is actually more expensive than the 890R.
Don't see the point of this bike. 790 was already extremely well recieved. Could've brought it under their ADV wing. Also what's with the R? A naked isn't meant to be raced in the track.
Dalbi Donnie They are going to completely saturate the market. 390, 490, 590, 690 etc. in all the offerings, Duke, ADV, SMC R
I see it as very good thing... Especially for adv market that still wait for real unicorn (690 adv im looking at you ktm!)
You always present awesome bike reviews, great job sir. Aloha from Hawaii, God Bless !!!
Goldilocks Bike. Halo bikes are cool but too much for the street. Halo bikes tech filter down to all their other bikes later.
That's an amazing bike, but $12,000 bucks?! But I guess thats the story with most KTM bikes so I shouldn't be surprised.
Nothing unusual price wise imo
And if ktm is charging too much for them, second hand market will show it quickly ;
@@Angry-Lynx well if you look at the competition (Yamaha MT-09, Honda Cb650R/CB1000R, Suzuki GSX650/GSX750, Kawasaki Z650/Z900, Husqvarna Vitpilen 701) most of them dont even come close to 12k. The only one of the bunch that is close and even goes over 10k is the CB1000R but at least Honda offers the CB650R for less.
@@LeumasKnight the difference I know is that none of those bikes you listed have cornering abs and most don't have the ccs this bike has. This bikes price falls more alone the Ducati and triumph brand prices while also keeping up with those companies specs wise

Still getting a 990 Super Duke 😈, a buddy at work described as “the bike with the throttle like a light switch” 😂
Definitely. They run very lean on the bottom so a ecu reflash and throttle tamer tube can help not make it so jumpy cruising through town.
That is a cool KTM Duke! I like it. I'm feeling a tail tidy on it though. You pulled a Dank Nooner there Adam
Very harsh on the 790. You really can't compare the 790D to a 890D R, they are two different bikes. Newer bikes will always be better. KTM had three (3) years to improve the 890. I could have gone 890 but still chose the 790, better bike for ME. Great deals can be had on a 790, spend the savings on upgrades, if needed/ desired.
Love what you own, improve what you can, and ride the snot out of it!
Well said, enjoy what you have, as both are still very new designs and bikes in general. Im riding 950adv and absolutely dont feel like its obsolete and love every second riding it ;
This or the Street Triple 765 RS??
This
I think I'd take the RS. Nicer sound and dash, no dlc b.s., probably more reliable. The 890's are about to switch production to China. Pretty expensive for that but maybe they will be better made there!
Two very different bikes. The KTM will give you more of a supermoto on steroids kinda feeling while the Triumph will give you a sportbike feeling. Test ride both of them is the only answer.
RS for me. Premium looks..Perhaps more refined and reliable
Bernd DasBrot : For me it’s the ‘other way around’ than what you think !!
At +-11min you say that you like the street mode best for wheelies , but you can only put the anti wheelie mode of in track mode , I can do chasing wheelies in rain , street and sport mode but a proper wheelie I can do only in track mode with AWM off .
Adam, lots of comments so I don't know if you'll see this question. I notice your gloves work well with touchscreens? Can you confirm they do and what brand/type they are? I've been looking for a pair of gloves that do work with touchscreens and these look pretty good on your video. Thanks for any response.
At 9:07, you mention "high and low speed compression and rebound damping at the rear". Is it actually separate adjustments for both high speed and low speed, for both compression and rebound damping (4-way)? If so, that is pretty unique among factory suspension no? Or is it a single adjuster for both high and low speed damping, one for bump and one for rebound?
Separate adjustments for low and high speed compression. Rebound is a singular adjustment.
They need an 890 Adventure R.
What happened to this series... I cannot watch this unless it's played at 1.5x speed. So much of the time is taken up with superfluous language and pauses.

Didn't the 790 come with track mode as standard?
Yup ... all the stuff that's locked behind the pay wall on the 890 -- up and down quickshifter, track mode, launch control, MTC --comes as standard on the 790 (apart from cruise control, thats not offered on the 790 Duke at all - but also not included in the 890 'tech pack', it's even more money on top) ...

890 sounds like a 350 in comparison
Theres a covering rubber missing at the fairing of the mirrors!!
Looks like the wheel speed sensor is on the front wheel (based on the speedo during the wheelie), so you can change gearing without recalibrating the ECU. That's pretty nice.

Slipper clutch prevents the real wheel from locking up, but he was really trying to lock it up. So it resulted in chattering.
Don't like the money grab software rubbish but otherwise its a good bike.
If you're thinking of buying one make sure the dealer knows that needs to be free or you're walking away.
Great review. So, I know that this is a completely different bike than the Street Triple RS, but in your opinion, which is funner to ride?
They're nearly the same spec wise. But the ktm has cornering abs which you would need to bump up to the speed triple to have (which has limited accessories over the street)
HCU failure? I think you had ABS off.
I log in here for you to tell me what that means not me to speculate to you.
dryadsdad it means headlight control unit.
Would you just fucking look at that. Brand new KTM with some strange electrical issue. It's like they do it on purpose. Either way, thanks for the upload guys! Stay healthy
Great, thorough video as usual with contrasts to other bikes.
Crazy how bikes have to be rolling computers now to be considered competitive and "premium." That bike has unfinished looks at best and already shows signs of electronic glitches at startup. Very reassuring when you consider KTM's abysmal customer service (especially in Canada). I'd just get a base MT07, mod it and call it a day.
KTM customer service in Europe is very good! Sad to hear it's not the same overseas.
If you go orange you wont look back trust me 😂😁👍
KTM customer service is actually done by KTM dealers. Maybe on your side of the pond the dealers have a "get rich quick" syndrome and can not be bothered to do their job properly ?
My next bike. Hopefully this summer.
Nice review & it looks like a great fun bike but it also seems that it will get you in trouble. A lot.
I like the versatility and lack of electronic gimmickry of the 2021 Ténéré 700. That's the one I have my eyes on.
