Will throw in some food for thought with the Ktms. I’ve got a 2023 Duke 890r, and it is a blast to ride. However, it has been in the shop 3 times for issues, including oil leaks, and this last time it went in, they discovered wear on the cams at 3700 miles and requires a new top end. @Edwordless I hear this all the time about how KTMs seem to have these issues with quality control and parts that don't meet spec. Electronic gremlins also get mentioned quite often. Other owners say that their bikes are trouble free and totally reliable. You better have a good dealer who will take care of you and fight for your warranty work because there are plenty who don't. "Ready to Race" sounds nice and all until you are waiting for parts from Austria. Same can be said of BMW and all Euro bikes. The Japanese bike makers seem to have better reputations for quality and parts availability. I've owned both and been lucky so far.

Always look forward to your videos... thank you. Regarding the gearing, I agree. I liked the previous setup with the tall 5th and 6th. The first 4 gears are up to any kind of acceleration you need, or want. With Godzilla torque the bike had no problem handling the "overdrive" top gears. Bought a '17 in Dallas and had to get home to L.A. quickly, so did it in a day. I had planned a bunch of fuel stops, but that sucker was giving me 50 or more mpg all the way home... only my butt stopped me from 220+ mile fill-ups. That was on interstates running 70-80 (depending on the state) including some pretty good headwinds. Crazy mileage numbers for a bike with this kind of power! Hope they didn't shorten those gears too much on this one.

Having owned 7 KTM's now over the years, I can say that especially everything Euro4, 5 and plus... is severely restricted by emissions regulations and stock exhausts. ( as probably any recent bike ). An 690 single, 890 twin or 1290, 1390 in particular, do change a lot when a full system + powercommander are installed. And I'm not talking about peak HP, just the direct throttle response, torque, every day riding really shows the potential of these engines. A lot of these online 1390 reviews are based on a stock configuration. With my friends' most recent 690 SMC R test in mind, which was driving like crap from factory, please do a follow up video when you get to ride one with full system. There's more to them ... thx.
I'm sure you're right but at the end of the day so many people just won't make the conversion and the bike has to be reviewed for what it is, not what it could be.

The behavior of drivers in my area is a combination of contempt for motorcycle riders and lack of awareness. After too many close calls, I am returning to my off road roots. Awesome bike and lived up to its billing. Just not worth the risk around here.
After purchasing a new KTM 690 SMC R. that is amazing, I'm seriously impressed with KTM. I might have to get this new SDR next and feel that "stump pounding torque."
Hey Zack ... huge fan of your work. Here is a suggestion: why not do Daily Commutes somewhere other than L.A.? There are some great commutes in other parts of the country that would mix things up a bit. Here is an idea: A commute from Tracy (Northern Cal Central Valley) to Livermore. Nice windy road and some opportunity for offroading. There's even an MX track! Just a thought. Keep up the great work.
As a daily commuter, I do enjoy my 21' SDR w/ a rear top lugge rack. It could be a adventure bike w/ a few mods. Tons of usable power for the street. It was a bit cramp when I transition over to the SDR from a Suzuki BKing But after riding it for the past 5 months, I've gotten used to the ergonomic of the SDR. This bike does not feel as planted during high speed like my BKing. You'll definately feel the cross wind. Gotta say that the power can and will get you in trouble really fast!
Was in the riding for me too. I went S1000r but I'd love to have one of these in the stable too. Just cant get past that extra charge to unlock software already in the bike.
@laingadaing I agree with you. It should be included, especially in that price. The tech is already there. It's a bunch of hooey to have to do a software upgrade just to get the full potential of your bike that you already paid for.
Great point that this bike isn't built around something else - as a naked version of a sports bike. It is designed as a super naked/roadster, and benefits in not feeling less fun away from the track.
And since Ducati is now Audi(/vw) it's maybe not surprisinging they are now more of an Austrian style middle ground - if it has to be a v4 I'd much rather have a tuono than the SF for example. Then again for a v4 I wish Honda was still in the game it created.
Always a good time with you Zack, giggles, serious feedback, honnest and fun. Totally cracked me up with your message to haters. 🤣 Also, I'm now about to switch from a Street Triple 765 (which I still love and is in many aspects a better bike) for a 890 SMT because my commute will be longer and I feel the appeal of travelling more while being able to have fun. I've never considered KTM or a trail-ish bike as an option but as I'm watching all daily riders, even about bikes that I'm not interested in, it openned my mind to new kinds of bikes, I realized that it might perfectly fit my use as a daily ride. So I tried it at a big motorbikes festival here in France and had a blast with it. Now I'm looking for an used 2023 one, and I think it's thanks to you that I've discovered and enjoyed this bike. Althought I also tried a Husqvarna Svartpilen 801 which is way more fun, because it's compact, light, punchy, perfect in narrow twisties and my heart goes to it. But as a daily ride the SMT is a solid good compromise for my use.
I have the same 2024 EVO and your description of the throttle is spot on, drives me nuts. The first 5-10% of the throttle pull is vague, it wants to cough and die and feels the opposite of precise as if you had a cable throttle. To be honest, it is driving me nuts. The throttle tube play is also too much, side to side, front to back, feels cheap. I want a clean throttle tube crack like your favorite 450 or a ducati. After the first 10%, its great and the engine opens up. I have thought about going to the dealership purely to see if maping could be adjusted on the throttle pull but I know they would have no idea. KTM or aftermarket, would love a solution to this. Its not something you would ever notice on a track but stop light to stop light, hesitations, little throttle blips.... that first 5% is not predictable. You can't blip the throttle like you are used to on any other machine. I would describe it to riding a poorly jetted carbed bike where its not getting fuel or not getting air, the hesitations at first throttle opening.
I had a 1290 SDR, and it did this weird automatic throttle plate blip thing during deceleration (fully closed throttle). Drove me batshit. Does the ‘24 do this?
@@leanit5756 I do not believe so. Occasionally on downshifts the quick shifter gives it a little blip more than you would expect but otherwise great. Just the throttle by wire initial hesitation that annoys me currently
If you have trouble with the throttle feeling a bit numb and unresponsive, most of it is solved by choosing one of the more aggressive throttle response maps in the meny, like sport/track aso.
Once you experience electronic suspension you will always want it. It’s a magic carpet ride. You notice the suspension right away even if no one told you the bike has electronic suspension
Bought my 2020 KTM 790 Adventure S new and have never had a single problem beyond a couple of flat tires off road. Got 12K miles on it now. I've added some sort of expensive software and hardware to it that make it much nicer, Quick Shift, Cruise Control, Rally Mode, Heated Grips. It's geared kind of low which makes the 1/4 mile time quite fast. Top speed for me is 129 MPH which has gotten me in trouble so I don't really need any more power. This bike would possibly get me some jail time. I really like the looks of the Duke but the absence of any wind screen would wear me out in probably an hour or so. + the 32" seat height would be a bit too much for me. Great review, thanks for doing this.
@@MagnumMuscle1000 This one was made in Austria 🇦🇹 not china 🇨🇳. So far so good. If the cam lobes wear I should be feeling some power loss which I’m not.
I love watching these videos and cataloging away the bikes I'm going to look for in 10 years when someone is selling a garage Queen with under 10,000 miles for a third the price. Yes! Come live in my garage please.
You can't go wrong with the Super Duke or Street Fighter. I personally believe that the SD is a better street bike for several reasons. The SD has more torque, gas gauge, cruise control, WAY better gas mileage, less engine heat. Both are faster than anyone needs and both have monstrous torque but I will say I like the feel/handling of the SF. Now, I am a DucatI fan and own 4 but I also own the previous 1290 SD Evo. The bike that has unseated the Super Duke for me believe it or not is the Ducati 950 Super Sport S. Does not have the power, the tech etc. but it could be my favorite bike, along with my 950 Hyper SP. I still love the SD but when you get to really compare side by side the nuances shine through.
Cable Clutch/Throttle: Some are Great.. some not so much. My problem is precise control during lock to lock parking lot maneuvers. I can usually adjust the spring return tension and slack to work, but sometimes the cables are NOT routed in the least Bendy way or need lube. A bending cable often diddles the clutch/throttle.
My MV AGusta 800rr Pirelli edition was my favorite backup bike to the SD. Problem with high reving bikes, although intoxicating, difficult to wring out on city streets. The Streetfighter is also a high reving bike. SD makes more horsepower/torque below 9500 than 99% of bikes out there. All useable street rpm.
Super Duke 1290 so easy to turn wrenches. The whole engine easy to get at. Lambos/ferrari love showing the engines off. Same with SD. The Streetfighter more a semi naked. I wish you could see more of the engine
Wow, two KTMs at the top for the time being. I never would've called it but you've convinced me! I'm too in love with my Striple RS to consider this but I would consider the SMT for touring.
So I went for a ride today; openend the petcock, pulled the choke and pushed the start button. I would really like to have all these choices and "deep" menus. Not. I love these reviews and am amazed how far motorcycles and technology have come.
Hi Zack, would like to express my gratitude fir the amazing videos you are producing. Question: are you planning to to test for kawasaki zx14r? Yes, no? Why? Thank you
KTM makes great bikes as long as you don't absolutely need to make it home (this mostly applies to their multi cylinder bikes, the thumpers are mostly solid).
I tested the old 1290 and the new 1390 back to back. It's impressive how much KTM were aible to improve the 1390. It feels like it at least 20 kilos lighter even tho it's not!
had no idea manufacturers were still doing cable clutches! my '07 450 exc had a hydraulic clutch and during the time i owned it i had no idea it was such a big deal
Great video - I think KTM should call this bike the 1390 Super Duper Duke Evo - it practically has everything, just hope it has reliability which is the value that I put at the top of the list.
I like the orange Kool-Aid, too. What a great bike! I don’t have 1/100th of Zach’s experience with so many different motorcycles, but having owned a couple Super Dukes, I can identify with his assessment. Especially that last bit about the quiet wheelies. ;-)
A bit disappointing that you got the standard exhaust instead of the upgraded exhaust from Akrapovic. I'm a bit of a KTM fanboy. I still ride my first bike on a daily basis and it's a KTM 1050 Adventure. Amazing bikes. I've also ridden a 1300GS and prefer my 1050 by quite a margin.
No surprise to me that your top 2 are KTMs. Made by riders for riders. Now, to decide between the 2 for my next purchase? I'll likely choose the 1390 so I can track it, but the SMT is a tempting mile muncher with luggage for moto camping. Hmmmmm....... Great review, as always!
Not sure if it's just the mic but it doesn't sound that grunty. The 890R was and still is one of the best sounding twins I have heard to date. It had a very pronounced throb to it's exhaust note.
I was guessing a podium finish or possibly 4th place. I know you have the same bike as me, an old carbureted 950SM, so this bike would def fit your predilections. If I bought/rode the 1390 my license would be suspended before the end of summer... if I wasn't already locked up in the slammer or in a mangled mess in a ditch somewhere. It's too much bike for me but I would like to ride one for a weekend of twisty straightening and back road hooliganisms. Great review.
I know they are far from practical for a daily bike but it would be interesting to see how a budget dual sport stacks on this list there are some solid bikes that are really affordable new

The giggles tell you this is a special machine. Also, based on the state of that rear tire, I want to see what Zack did with this thing on the track.
This bike is in the running for me. Im looking to get a Hyper - naked for my next horse in the stable. Sooo much good stuff to choose from
Was in the riding for me too.
Always the best road tests in YT Land.
Always a good time with you Zack, giggles, serious feedback, honnest and fun. Totally cracked me up with your message to haters. 🤣
Also, I'm now about to switch from a Street Triple 765 (which I still love and is in many aspects a better bike) for a 890 SMT because my commute will be longer and I feel the appeal of travelling more while being able to have fun.
The ‘24 Duke 390 is like that too.
Thanks Zach, this test was useful for me in choosing between a Speed Triple RS and this bike.
even if this bike is the opposite of those I am interested in, I find it so nice and entartaining to watch Zack's review.
Only a biker knows how satisfying are those giggles 🤣
Like a sawsall, it has great power, versatility and force to cut through a lot with precision sometimes but mind your fingers
KTM makes great motorcycles. This video made me really miss my 1090 Adventure R. Totally different kind of bike yet similar DNA.
I'm just waiting for the GT to come out. And I'll be the first in line. Will keep riding my old one until then
Once you experience electronic suspension you will always want it. It’s a magic carpet ride. You notice the suspension right away even if no one told you the bike has electronic suspension
The ending clip lmao “here you go have a snack”
*tame little quiet wheelie*
Good luck with the disintegrating cams 😂
@@MagnumMuscle1000 This one was made in Austria 🇦🇹 not china 🇨🇳. So far so good. If the cam lobes wear I should be feeling some power loss which I’m not.
Love all the super bikes, love the hyper nakeds, and love the super duke. It's an amazing bike. I'll be sad when they're no longer available.
Good review as always Zack, full of info and action that most of us keen to know and needs to know,Our fav moto journalist
I love watching these videos and cataloging away the bikes I'm going to look for in 10 years when someone is selling a garage Queen with under 10,000 miles for a third the price. Yes! Come live in my garage please.
Zack is not a Duke but a KING 💪🏼
I feel ya Zack, if you need a reminder that the side stand is down maybe you are not in the right state of mind to operate The Beast
I have an 890 adventure and it's brilliant.
that wheelie behind the cop 🥰
I have owned 30 motorcycles, 2 super Duke 1290’s. Best engine made. Torque and horsepower all below 9500 rpm,
My MV AGusta 800rr Pirelli edition was my favorite backup bike to the SD.
With the Mandello hanging in there on the podium, I really hope they get a chance to test ride the Stelvio.
37:57 This is a brilliant example of why Zack is great at what he does. Respect
I’ll never buy one of these but I’ll watch this whole video and any others in this series
The S1000R is a better value proposition, but you can't deny the huge fun factor on this bike; I'd love to own one!
You don't buy these bikes for value. Buy what talks to you.
I still like the looks of the gen 3. The headlight was so much cleaner. Expensive (trust me I’ve broken 2 of them) but they looked fantastic
469 pounds for a bike with that much displacement is wild!
Great show, thanks Zack
Hi Zack, would like to express my gratitude fir the amazing videos you are producing.
Question: are you planning to to test for kawasaki zx14r? Yes, no? Why? Thank you
KTM makes great bikes as long as you don't absolutely need to make it home (this mostly applies to their multi cylinder bikes, the thumpers are mostly solid).
It would be perfect to see how the 990 stacks up on the daily rider leaderboard
I tested the old 1290 and the new 1390 back to back. It's impressive how much KTM were aible to improve the 1390. It feels like it at least 20 kilos lighter even tho it's not!
great review & thanks for confirming that i can keep my 1290 r!
Like all KTMs, it just needs all the plastic binning, a teardrop tank, round headlight and a pr of analogue clocks fitting.
Winner.
had no idea manufacturers were still doing cable clutches! my '07 450 exc had a hydraulic clutch and during the time i owned it i had no idea it was such a big deal
Especially that last bit about the quiet wheelies. ;-)
Cant wait to buy this is 15 years when it depreciates into my orice range
ktm 890 smt still #1! Whoo hoo!
Quality episode, loved watching it
Zak makes the best videos!
I'm glad you went with Arnie as the "most famous Austrian" rather than the one I immediately thought of!😂
A bit disappointing that you got the standard exhaust instead of the upgraded exhaust from Akrapovic.
I'm a bit of a KTM fanboy. I still ride my first bike on a daily basis and it's a KTM 1050 Adventure.
Amazing bikes. I've also ridden a 1300GS and prefer my 1050 by quite a margin.
They way that neon orange angled bodywork looks from the side reminds me of some wild 1980s rock band electric guitar lol
I'm just not sure this bike has enough power or torque for my daily needs. I'll wait for the 1490
For a beginner bike, maybe. Any seasoned vet is waiting for the 1690
love a well placed, “shut up”
I know they are far from practical for a daily bike but it would be interesting to see how a budget dual sport stacks on this list there are some solid bikes that are really affordable new
I test rode one yesterday and I’m going to out my 2020 panigale v4s to get one of these 👌😎
Would this be a suitable beginner bike ?
By all means, it could be the 1st and last bike one would ever own !
Welp, I need one. This is exactly what I have been waiting for from KTM, actually.
