I had two days to test bikes, wanted an MT09. I thought I’d waste some time testing the 890 because the KTM dealer was close by. It all felt quite calm and normal, then I pulled back the throttle at 35mph in second. I’ve owned the Duke for 2 months now. 😂
Haha yup. That's how they get you! 😂
They got me I have a gp890 duke
Keep it coming Dan! Was stoked when you got the Tiger, and this is the bike I've been waiting to see. Very glad it will be a multi vid overview. Safe riding!
Another amazing first ride review! It just looks so agile! Is it really that effortless? Respect to KTM!
Wow the camera work 🤩
Got one since thursday did a testride ofcourse, but your video helped alot aswell im so happy with it.
14:59 that giggle is killing me. Great video.
Your reaction when pulling in second gear, that was the same reaction i had🤣
I really want that bike now, i love it
I bought one of these in May as my first road bike, it's such a joy to ride like he said its super tame under 5k rpm no surprises. Then you get into it and its hard to explain, you just giggle like a school girl and smile. I changed my exhaust silencer out for an IXIL RC Slip-on and boy did that make the bike sound a lot better, that's the only complaint I had with the bike is the stock exhaust sound.
This is my bike. Same color even. Love it. Going to add cruise control to it when i can. Thanks for the review!
Nice! Hope to get one too one day. Ride safe and enjoy! 👍
Great vlog Dan. Nice to see you again. That bike looks so much fun. Gets up to speed no problem. Very nice and it does look good. Carnt wait to see the next videos on it 👍🏻
Thanks Dan! 😊
7:48 I rode one of these the other day… and it was plenty smooth at very low revs!
Beautiful surprise , superb bike , thanks for the video
Thanks for watching my friend. 😊👍
Love the intro.
Thank you! 😊
Great bike, excellent review. I'm still smiling 😎😬😊
I got her sister the 890 Duke R, and its absolutely a joy to ride ^^ So much fun with this bike, it's like a toy designed for adult !
Yeah, exactly. For "mature" riders. :) Drop by man.
Great review Dan , when is part two coming?
Great fun review as always, though I had thought the switchgear was always backlit on KTM's. I'm sure I've seen that even the 790 was.
Loved this video, I don't see too many about this bike out there but when will you be posting the new video?
Except for the fuel tank is only 14L, it seems a nice bike. :) Great review. Keep up.
Dan: 0:55 "we have some wheels"
Me: *mindblown*
Damn straight! 😁
Great Review Dan. I was all set to by the new Mt09, but out of curiosity, thought I’d give the the new 890 a test ride. I knew straight away this was the bike made for me. Extremely confidence inspiring with the handling and seating position , and just such a joy to ride. Thank you for the great review. It’s currently winter now where I live , so the days I can’t get out .. I feel as I can ride along with you with your reviews
Ride safe
"Confidence expiring"? Well shit, guess I won't be getting the Duke after all. I want a bike that is confidence inspiring, not something that kills it dead.
@@kellyjackson7889 * inspiring not expiring 😆.
I’ve corrected it now. Confidence expiring certainly sounds like a kill joy !!
@@shanemeek81 lol thx for having a sense of humor there was nothing to correct it just made me chuckle a bit. Cheers!
how is it's reliability tho?
@@surfthewav3 Now at 13500km. Not a single issue 😎👍
Nice one 👍👌 bro
Dan, Dan, the English Biker.
That's me!
Well done Dan! I was a happy Honda CB650R owner and then I took a used 690 Duke for a testride. I bought it on the spot! Two weeks ago I fetched it and I haven't touched the Honda since. And that says alot since the Honda is such a lovely bike.
It was the same with me.
My dealer had offered me the 690 Duke for a long time.
I had refused again and again because of the look.
Then the test drive, in love, bought, great motorcycle!
Two weeks ago I just wanted to look at the 890 Duke.
On the same day, I had an 890Duke at home. KTM is addicting!
What did you love about the 690 Duke better compared to the cb650r?
@@bratprince11 Lower weight, low down grunt, handling and sound. And seating position is, for me, much comfier 😁
@@johnDukemaster Thanks John. I'm seriously considering the 790/890 Duke! But was also looking at the cb650r...mostly for the looks and Honda reliability.
@@bratprince11 A tough one! The Honda is a good bike in all sorts of ways. Quality, performance etc. But...the way the KTM touches my soul when riding...the thrill, the grin, the smiles/miles, engaging riding...here's the KTM the winner. (for me!)
Some say that KTM is not that reliable. Here's the Honda a winner for sure, but the KTM is not far behind. What bike would you choose when listening to your heart? 😀
17.54........Smash button???? haha
Nice review Dan, clearly you enjoyed it and we all love a bike that gives fun.
In Thailand the 890 isn't available, I did however ride the 2021 790 on track. That was great so, I can only imagine how good the 890 must feel.
Looking forward to the next one.
Point of note; I believe, as with 390, you can put the TFT into night mode. I prefer this anyway and it stops that distracting blinking in shade to light.
Yes indeed, my Tiger also does it but you only have day mode option! 🙄 Cheers for watching!
It looks like you had a lot of fun on it
I sure did!
Come on Daniel don't make us what to long for the second video 👍
Oops. Sorry!
Great review. How do you like it compared to your CB650R? I know they're not in the same class, but just wondering how they compare in terms of power, comfort, turning, etc.
Nice review 👍 ... seems like the fuelling at 30mph is improved over the 790, sounded quite smooth early on in the vid when you were cruising through 30 zones. Nice bike indeed and looks great with the matt black tank and subframe. I'm glad I got a new 790 back in 2019 though .. even back then at £8.5K it was nearly £2K less than this 890+tech pack (790 comes with all the electronics and quickshifter as standard, no extra cost) and thats a considerable difference 😉
I remember seeing the 790 last year for 7500 new! A bargain to be sure. It's still a great fun bike but the 890 just takes it up another level. Cheers and enjoy the 790!
@@Englishbikerdan Yeah they dropped them down to £7.5K for 2020 to shift them all before Euro 5 kicked in (as they aren't E5 compliant). For sure the 890 steps it up a bit, no doubt ... but in all honesty the 790 is already more than enough for me for the road, it still surprises me every time I get the opportunity to use full throttle 😲😉
Blacked out 890 Duke R = the perfect bike imho, but I might like a little lower seat height. I don't like the complications of the electronics, but they hopefully have the bugs worked out by now. If I'm doing everyday riding, 790 is pretty dead sexy as well. If I'm doing city only, I would be all about a 390.
Awesome video 🔥🔥🔥🔥, please also do a review on KTM 890 ADV R.
Thank you! I have the standard 890 adventure review coming soon. To be honest, not much I can do with the R as I'm not all that good off road!
@@Englishbikerdan ohhh daam, as I am planning to buy a 790 or 890 ADV R.
Will get my 890 next week :-))))
I am very jealous! 😎
Thanks for another good road test. I wonder how this KTM would compare with something like the Kawasaki Z900 Café or the Honda CB1000.
I think a fair comparison would be the Z900 and Street Triple R. The CB1000 has quite a bit more power but it's a bit heavier too.
I can't imagine riding this motorcycle. The 790 duke is very powerful. I think this one is a good option for even more demanding people who are used to one liter motorbikes.
Glad it has wheels. Although knowing ktm wheels will probably be an optional extra next year 🤣
Liked your review man. Do you have experiences on the highway for longer distances? I want a 890 so bad but dont know iff its the right choice in therms of longer distance…
Spot on review as always Dan ! Personally I think at over 10 grand that’s dangerously close to street triple rs money 😬 the R had better be biblical to cost more than the triumph ! It’s still between the rs & the new mt 09 sp for me next season .
It's more raw than the RS, which I LIKE! RS is a stunning bike though. I'm still unconvinced by Yamaha's after such a bad ownership experience with my MT07.
The 800 R has been out for a while and has been heavily tested against the 765RS and all reviewers prefer the 890 R over the RS
890 R is preferred over RS by many.
Very good practical video, but did you ever do the promise follow up video, as I cannot find it?
Thanks, not yet. I make a point of never saying when! 😁
This KTM looks niiice
Believe it or not, after I'm done with my BMW F 750 GS, this KTM is my upgrade.
I really enjoy watching EnglishBikerDan! He’s sort of the Ricky Gervais of motorcycle commentators (this is a good thing).
Haha thanks. He is a local hero to us as we grew up in the same part of England.
Lovely bike test rode it myself but I brought a Tiger 850 sport 😁 wanted a bit of all round bike.
This is the position I find myself in, I’m currently riding a 675 street triple and have been weighing up whether to go for one of these new middleweight nakeds or get the Tiger 850 sport. I always have the nagging feeling that naked bikes feel a little bit one trick ponies, great for a blast etc. The tiger may not be as fast but you seem to get a lot for your money and on our pretty rubbish roads would make a lot of sense. Hope you’re enjoying your bike 👍🏻
@@simonthecarpenter4203 should look at the new Tracer 9 as well, a bit sportier than the Tiger but still plenty of luggage and comfort - plus you get the MT-09 triple engine 👌 and the GT version is pretty spec'd out for the price.
Nice review! Different bikes I know but how does it compare to the CB650R?
The b-rolls are crisp 👌 design is very subjective but I think the wasp-like look is actually pretty cool.
Do you change preload for rear shock during these first rides at all?
Thanks, not during the first ride as I like to feel how it is setup as stock. However the suspension was non adjustable on this.
I subscribed the smash button
Great review! Very curious to learn more about the track electronics and also how the R model compares to it.
Cheers mate! I think I saw you last weekend at Loomies. We have the same or similar HJC lid? The thing with track mode, is you really need to take it on track. On the road it's a little wild! 😂
@@Englishbikerdan Must have been my evil twin as I wasn't there last weekend lol. Pretty sure we run in similar circles though. If you see a moto gp blue gsxr with a blue and yellow hjc lid around Pirbright that'll be me. Yeah I can imagine the bike would be quite fun on track. I used to track my xsr900 and it's sort of that perfect engine size for mixed street/track riding.
@@SimonTheSquid How odd, was blue gixxer and neon HJC lid. Black leathers too. Maybe it wasn't last weekend.... 😂
I think you may have seen my 790 video on track, Simon. That was a new level!!! The 890R with track pack would be another level again, give your gixxer a run for the money for sure...haha Take care mate
@@davexs Yeah mate it looked good have to say! Although when I retire back to naked bikes I'll probably just do the 1290 🙈.
Nice vid!
I feel the same twisting the throttle of my 2019 Honda CB1000R, it gives me giggles whilst the hairs raise up on your neck and the butt string draws taught. :)
Cheers from Lynden, WA. USA
Ha, I had decided to get the 790, then took my 390 for a service today and chopped the XSR7 in for an ex-demo 890, keeping the 390 as a commuter because its amazing, 79 mpg!
I love the 890 and 390. The 390 Adventure is also a cracking bike!

Can I ask what mic you're using in your helmet? The voice quality you get is fantastic, alongside the very high production quality of your videos in general.
Thank you! I use a Sena 10S boom mic plugged into the Gopro with a couple of adapters and the media mod.

@@TheLoneTrader It was a fun bike/scooter! 😁
Nice. Can it carry any luggage to go camping,? No chance of a centre stand I guess?
Nice review Dan. Question is the engine and shifting smooth like the Honda CB?
no it isnt.....more direct, lil quirky and personality......inline 4s are completely different........honda is bland, consistent, predictable......the KTM isnt.....so depends on what kind of rider you are or want to be....hope it helps
I beliebe there is one leg for compression and rebound and the other for the spring/air
Dan did you make the follow up to this?
Thanks for your vid’s! If you could have just one do it all bike would it be the Duke 890 / 890R or the Street triple R you reviewed a few months ago?
If I had to choose, I'd probably go with the Triumph just as there's a dealer closer to me!
@@Englishbikerdan Thanks for your thoughts. I have KTM and Triumph dealers close and have had two KTM dukes (390 & currently 690) and about to upgrade. Really torn but you seemed to be giggling a lot more on the KTM!!!
I do not like chunky gear boxes and choppy on off throttles. Which bike does not have these issues? Please advise.

What are your thoughts on reliability and mechanical issues? When I go on forums and chat rooms there’s a lot of pissed off people. Such a cool bike, wish they’d have better satisfied long term results
Most bikes suffer issues. KTM seem to get a bad time of it online but as I've never owned one I can't really comment on long term reliability.
I went on a very nice country test ride with a group from KTM and the 890 felt great. Was it just me though or does it feel like it always wants to lift the front end and wheelie? Maybe it's just the power but I really had fun with it. It just wants to play all the time I was riding!
My test ride was tje same, first and second under hard acceleration had the tc/anti wheelie kicking in, which I found frustrating as thought I hit the rev limiter a bit too early
Are you going to make a first ride review for the brand new TRACER-9 ??
It's doubtful as I can't get hold of any Yamaha's locally.
6:18 this reaction is why i subbed yesterday, i think i have come down with a case of want new bike fever
Thanks for the sub! There's a KTM dealer opening near me soon. I fear for my bank balance! 😂
@@Englishbikerdan Hmmm, does that mean you might be able to test a Svartpilen 701? I'm very interested in that bike lol
@@MovingTargetOne I could probably borrow one from KTM tbh. Just not got around to asking for one yet. I'll get to it before the season is over.
@@Englishbikerdan well I am probably buying a ducati scrambler urban, before i can afford the sport pro. Still very interested in the svartpilen review :)
@@MovingTargetOne Very nice, good bikes! Enjoy!

Thx for the great vid! :)

@@Englishbikerdan Great, can't wait! :)
What's it like using all the gears??
Lovely video! I was wondering if you would recommend the 390 duke or the honda cb650r. Just wanna know your opinion
As they are in very different power classes it's more about what you prefer. Light and nimble or heavier, faster and more stable. They are quite different really.
@@Englishbikerdan I get what you mean. Thanks for responding. Im getting my first bike and i have been bingeing your videos. Keep it up!
Nice video! This or street triple R or MT09?
To be honest, they're all great options. It's whatever tickles you the most!
looking hard at the bike but at the moment i have ordered a tiger 850 sport because the duke 890 looks mental ,but can it do every day riding ,or have i got it wrong !!!
Can't go wrong with a Tiger 850 but it's a very different bike to this Duke.
This or the Ducati Monster 2021??
Monster 2021 or duke 890 ?
Nice review but must correct one thing the frame is Chromoly steel and the subframe is aluminum.
I think I do well to memorise all the info in these vids. Sometimes I'll miss something or get it wrong though. 👍
Could this bike do highway HOURS at say, 80 mph? Presuming a small windscreen.. Would it be too small for a long day trip? Blown-around by traffic on the A-1 or whatever you have there?
Yes, all day every day. It's more about if the rider can do it!
Hi Dan, the way the exhaust is mounted so high in the bike; seems dangerous for pillion, isn't it?
Took my lady on it, she had no complaints about the exhaust. Just the seat! 😂
I’m really struggling to decide between the 890R and 1920 Evo…. Price is a big point but I feel like I’ll get the 1290 eventually anyway so why not just go for it? And then KTM had to be absolute maniacs and upgrade it to a 1390 V4 for 2024…. How can I say no to that? BUT AT THEY SAME TIME IVE SEEN THINGS ABOUT A 990 DUKE. WHAT AM I TO DO
Great bike. I'll stick with my 390. Nice jacket. What is it, please?
It sure is. If you check description, all my gear is listed there. 👍
Frame is steel
KTM makes the Funnest naked bikes out there, but they should work more in reliability front and attention to detail work..like Triumph..Triumph feels like a properly put together machine.
5 foot and 7 inches.
I think you are comparing the Indian made small cc bikes to the Triumphs. This bike is made in Europe and is of much better build quality than the 390s, 200s etc
@@RealOrbit-Australia , Ktm is notorious for head gasket and electrical issues...and its everywhere...but im not sure if its true with modern day KTMs..
@@abymathew295 There are issues with all manufacturers bikes tbh. I've owned many brands and I've had issues with Japanese built bikes too. The MT07 was the most unreliable bike I've ever owned in over 20 years of riding.

Hello Dan. May I ask is the throttle less ON/OFF than the Duke 390 at low speeds? Your previous video on the Duke 390 did encourage me to buy a 2021 model. You made it very clear at the end of the video that the throttle was a little ON/OFF but the bike was absolutely fantastic and I agree! As always a smashing review. Looking forward to the second instalment.
SW France
Bonour! The throttle does seem better on the later KTM's, sometimes it's difficult to remember without watching my videos again! I love France. BTW, my lady is from Langres but moved to the UK when she was young. Random trivia for you! Take care and ride safe.
EnglishBikerDan Thank you Dan for your reply. My wife and I retired to the Gironde SW France 10 years ago and we also love it here! Your partner comes from the beautiful Haute-Marne department of France (Langres) close to the wonderful Champagne domains of Reims and Epernay which is a bit further north east than the Gironde. Thought I would add some trivia also.

Hi Dan love your videos and thanks for your replies. What would you say would be the top middleweight naked road bikes ? Needs your help to make a decision
Hi Jason. Tough one as there's so many great bikes. I've had the most fun on the 890 and Aprilia Tuono 660 though.
@@Englishbikerdan thanks Dan I have the Tuono at the top of my list at the moment. Do you think i need the IMU (6 to 8 weeks wait time) ? Or is it worth getting it without? Thanks again for your time. Btw did you do a review of the tuono? Can’t seem to find one.
@@jasonjohannes8285 I personally don't see the 'need' for an IMU on a middleweight road bike. I've recorded a review of the Tuono and it'll be up in a week or so. Thanks! 👍
Hi Dan considering you have experience riding both the cb650r and the Tuono 660 which would you say is the better bike?
Hi, what’s wind blast like when you are going fast?
Like any other naked bike, at high speed (70mph and upwards) it's not all that comfortable over longer distances.
7:25 why is there a traffic sign in the middle of the road? And it’s even in the shadow for extra danger
To slow traffic down near a school.
Can't wait for the husqvarna version of this engine
That'll use this KTM engine.
@@Englishbikerdan Yes thats what I meant :). With Vitpilen and Svartpilen 701 being discontinued I want them to release something with a bigger engine in the similar styling!
the rear suspension pre-load is adjustable on this model.
Are you sure? I checked the manual and couldn't see any mention of an adjustment collar.

how come steering damper is only on the R version in the states?......not huge deal but kinda weird, more importantly is the lower triple clamp that accepts the damper so can buy a proper one......its a really cheap unit but better than nothing as the duke isnt the most stable bike with quick handling
Before long they will have a road pack were you can have indicators mirrors and decent paintwork or maybe wheels with tyres all for an extra £2,000 ha : D Good review though : )
Do you think this bike would be comfortable for someone that’s 6’3
I have one! Cramped at first then I got 1” taller seat, and 1” lowered pegs huge difference
I’m desperate to make this my next bike, I’m 5ft 8” will I be able to flat foot the floor, saw one at a bike meet last Sunday but didn’t have the balls to ask if I could sit on his bike 🤣
I’m 5’10” and the R has me on my toes. The non-R is definitely more flat-foot friendly. I’m still considering either of the models but the proper road tyres and loser ride height is making me consider the standard model over the R (even with the Rs fancy suss and extra HP).
Looks like good fun, But it dose not look like a quality item for the money !!
And I see KTM are continuing with the Lady-bum head light !
I think the muffler shape is a late after thought ?? Guys test ride a Mt-09 before you pull the trigger on one of these ???
It's the most fun bike I've ridden. Some elements aren't quite there yet quality wise. The new MT09 is meant to be great, I just can't get over the looks and reliability issues, ironically!
I have had this Bike for over 6 months. Its a tad not as powerful as the R version but my God after 5k RPM, it pulls.. you can barely notice the difference.. It is a tad lower than the R and the seating position is perfect in my opinon and I'm 6 foot. Its very light and easy to lane filter in urban traffic. Some cons, the stock 890 exhaust looks like a Banana... get a slip on for cool factor if you want. KTM also are pretty crap with selling options to "unlock' certain features.. I paid to get the Tech pack and quick shifter... I wish it came standard with the bike. Fueling is pretty average - probably because its a joy to throttle red line in 1st gear. If you are on the highway, it purrs and is probably more economical on fuel comsumption. That is really the cons. The software and tech packed into the 890 is in my opinion the selling factor. I feel safe riding it. Even with minimal slippage of the back wheel, the engine will cut power until traction is detected.. it has lean sensitivity to assist with a bad turn... it is a very forgiving bike... I rate.. 9/10. Love it!!
Is it stable on the highway at high speeds (90mph) ? Ive seen some footages where people experience tank slappers alot, because the bike is so light with so much power.
@@Snotroggel453 I have never experienced death wobble on the bike, It does come with a steering damper standard. I typically apply a little more force onto the handlebars on any bike I ride on the highway.
Does this bike have cruise control or is there an option for cruise control?

Awesome, thank you!
So no cruise control on this model?
Available as an optional extra.

Well I never, it looked new to me for some reason. Been a while since I rode the 790, over 2 years in fact!
How tall are you dan?
About 5'8".
how does it feel vs 2021 mt09?
which one to get
I've not ridden the new MT09 so I can't advise on that one.
@@Englishbikerdan hope you can ride that one soon 👍
I really wanted to like this bike....but..the engine...its a cross between a tractor and a sowing machine...yes it pulls strong and if you live next door to a rollercoaster then its a good bike...but for a general road situation there are better choices...dont buy hype
To each his own. I thought it was one of the best road bikes for pure experience and fun.
