- It's a great time to be into naked bikes! We've just been thrown the key to the awesome 2020 KTM 890 Duke R, a bike that is now a worthy little brother to the 1290 Super Duke R we tested back in February.
Starts video, hears aussie accent, then see $11,699 MSRP. Spits coffee all over screen in disbelief and reaches for phone to ring KTM dealer to put an order in! Then it dawns on me price is in US not AUD.....DOH!!!
Wasn't expecting any 890DR review beyond factory vids given the current situation. So a surprise, and excellent piece. Happened to go through the online configurator just last night, only picked the quickshifter option, should see what that track package really gives you. Thanks!
Correction it is not a 790 Duke replacement ,nice vid cheers .
@Quinn Dang well, at a EU dealership i am looking right now, the duke 790 is 9700 and the duke 890 is 12200 euros on which you need to add the quickshifter package in order to match the stock electronics of the 790 so i would say the difference would be closer to 3000 euros... it just moves it out of MT 09 and z900 price ranges... the 890 cannot compete with these prices from the japanese bikes...but the 790 can... and it has better electronics than them too...

Definitely making the 790 obsolete, unless KTM puts the price around the 7-8k range.
It's not a 790 replacement. That stays in the line up.
There is no 690 Duke anymore.
Yea the amount of wrong info in this intro was stunning, also none of the bodywork is new, the engine isn't new etc etc

If it handles anything like my 690 Duke R it would be a winner.

I would go with the KTM 890R. STriple 765 RS lacks in the electronics department a little bit (no IMU, lack of lean angle sensitive ABS and TC). However, If I had to choose between the Duke 790 and STriple 765 RS I would go with the STriple.

And to follow up on that last point, the reason I'd go Steeet Triple RS over 790 Duke is because the 790 has worse brakes and non adjustable suspension compared to the Triple, but the handling is supposedly better. The 890 improves the brakes and suspension to be more in line with the Triumph while keeping the handling, making it the better bike in my eyes.
Will wait and see if this bike has any issues [like many KTM's have done in the past].
You are awesome for reviewing for us this bike between all this messy month. I have a monster 821 and if Ducati doesnt step up, I will consider this one or a second hand Super Duke. Good job Rennie.

Not sure yet. Haven't ridden the 765 RS. But we'll be throwing them together for a test, for sure.

tech pack (track mode) is an option and cost an extra $1200!! why isn't that mentioned??? bad review..
good review, but those tires HATE water by definition. They are track day focused. So you had no issues in those wet spots because you were driving careful. Not because of the tires.

It went from 690 to 790 and now 890 in 3 years
It's more like 3 separate engines. Not just numbers.
Lifted_Above 790 and 890 are pretty much the same engine
Tech pack (quickshifter+, track mode, etc) is $725, just bought my 890 yesterday. Tech pack, cruise control (requires a new control switch) and labor was $1155 altogether.
By labor you mean people putting it on right?
I took the tech pack too, but not the cruise controll

@@UA-cam_Globetrotter Tech pack is a must, but I'll tell you what, the cruise control is really nice to have. I don't go on long trips or anything, but it's still nice to have on the highway or interstate to give my right hand a little break every now and then

If this feels as good as the 2020 Super Duke handling wise, then it's a RIPPER!
It weighs less than the 790, which weighed about 60 pounds less than the prior 1290. So I'd say yeah.
If feels far more agile, you can't compare the SDR vs the 890R
@@dannygernaat9961 I've ridden one since, and yes, they are comparable, but obviously with far less weight the 890R is that much more nimble

Remy.....lovely review, as always.....apart from the 'this thing' overuse. Keep up the good work, mate.
Brother has an old 1290 and his partner has a 790 which they rip around Switzerland, Northern Italy on. If you live in the Burbs, the 890 looks to be more suited to urban commuting and ripping through the twisties on the weekend. Does the track pack give the 890 that much more performance?
Spec wise very similar to my 990 SD.. Would the electronics be a good enough excuse to upgrade anyway? Looking for opinions of people who actually rode both bikes.

890 looks great from off the bike, but dam the riding view looks awful. Is that a mobile phone with antenna indicators hanging off

Great bike but the amount of issues i hear that they have makes ot pretty hard to pull thw trigger.

Replacement for the Duke 790? I don't think so. The 790 will still be available.
I should have been more specific. The 790 Duke is still available, I meant this was the replacement as the main middleweight bike from KTM. My bad.

It’s a bit like washing powder adverts .. every time a new washing powder comes out... it cleans “ much whiter”.. than the one before ... which was “much whiter”.. than the one before that .. and so on ... basically... they’ll say anything to get you to buy the next one out .. same with bikes ,cars ,phones .. etc... same principle really ..:-)))

actually the 1290 is very easy, very smooth, very controllable under 7000rpm. it’s only aggressive on your wallet if you don’t push it hard. i’ve had one for a year. do you know what you’re talking about?

Agreed, KTM ought to make a RC 790 or 890.
Middleweight supersports are a dead category. Probably because the demographic of new bike buyers is aging, and by their 30s most riders have outgrown the idea of race replicas for road riding. Hence naked bikes and adventure bikes dominating the market and manufacturers focus. Regular track riders aren't a large enough group.
RS660 might be your ticket?
Sport bikes are completely impractical for 90% of road riding.
@@Joric78 I think its more to do with 600cc are expensive and only have any torque way high in the rev range.. I think most riders would go back to supersports if the engines were triple or even parallel twins like the new RS660.
How does the power compare to the MT 09?
Haven't ridden them back-to-back, but the KTM claims about 15 hp more than the Yamaha at 120 hp.

Carl G. I saw a 790 that the guy removed the heat shield painted it flat black and re-installed it. It looked a lot better. Less like a catfish sucking a pipe! Lol

Thanks Remy, always great to hear your thoughts. At 170cm I’m small in stature so I’ve always had supersport rather than superbikes. The 890R sounds perfect for me, although at 61yo I might be getting a little close to my use by date as far as sports bikes go. Stay safe over there during the pandemic; you’ve got a maniac at the helm.

I agree, shame about the orange rims and pity this is the only color option offered but sounds like it's an awesome package though.
That's why they make spray paint. I absolutely wouldn't let that from stopping me from owning this bike. I will buy one and duplicor the wheels dark bronze for about 15$.
