- When it comes to using memory foam, especially in motorcycle seats, there's a few things to consider when having a seat built by an upholsterer.
If you have an upholstery need, visit me at TridentCustomD...
I serve the Tampa Bay area from Sarasota to Crystal River and accept motorcycle seat projects nationwide.
OUTSTANDING! There is / was another company that I was looking at a few years back who was doing custom multiple density layered seats, but after seeing way too many bad reviews about orders not being filled, orders being extremely late, and just a very poor professional attitude I decided I was not going to do business with that particular company. You seem to be much more professional in your demeanor, I will definitely be reaching out when it's time to finally get that new seat I've been saving up for. I've researched memory foam and even gel inserts, and the consensus is gel inserts get way too hot in summer and lose their support and cushioning factor, and get too cold and hard in cold weather, so multi density foam is the way to go. I'll reach out soon
Thank you
Hey! What do you think of gel pads, do they absorb well? I was thinking of putting some in my rear seat so my pillion doesn't suffer as much as usual. Anyone got experience with this?
I have a hardtail shovel and I bought a little amazon gel but pad(idgaf chopper people, sue me lol)
And I can ride that with no issues for well over several hundred miles now no issues
One of the best foam explanations I've come across yet!
Thanks for the info. Great video. What density foam is used on most stock seats?
Awesome video, and I don't understand how it does not have more views! 👏👏👏
so what is the best density foam and type of foam for a rigid seat on a hardtail frame?
Amazing.. What a great explanation, thank you! I'll be taking this info to my local upholsterer
Thanks for your time and a great explanation as to why my ass hurts! I have the wrong foam in my seat. Will use a laminated approach to replace existing foam. Cheers from the UK.
Wow! Great information, another reason to move back to Florida. Thanks
And what about gel as a layer? thoughts on that? I am about to get rid of a Kawasaki Z900RS because of the seat. I cannot ride it over 90 minutes to 2 hours.
Most informative ive found, cause of that and since you said you're in Tampa bay ill come in and have you build me a seet. It will be a solo for my 07 heritage.
Great video. Spot on instructions and guidance
See my bike has a suspension so I’m not too concerned about shock absorption.
James knows seats. Gave me a free lesson by phone on what to use on my new Chinese ebike seat.
The seats on these Chinese ebikes are like bricks. Even a seat supposedly made in Canada or the U.S. is made in China.
Listen to this ebike review and you will learn something about the seat you get and what you really need.
Even the glue is important. The light tack glue is important rather than what you would use to put two pieces of wood together.
Glad I talked to him before I got the foam for my seat. Helpful guy. Thanks James.
You my Friend has achieved all the great knowledge about foam the world ever need
Are the rating ILD? Where can you buy the foam in the US?
Memory foam for spreading stationary load (body weight) , and regular sponge for absorbing dynamic load (shocks & impulses & vibrations etc.) Is it right?
Yup but dont forget the bike has shock absorbers too so the seat isnt doing the whole job
Sponge is what you find at the bottom of the sea, or on the side of your bathtub 🛁
@@rickspa8348 Yeah know that and the diff between open n closed cell foams n then its just a density game after that
Very interesting sir . Can you mix foam and Gel pad. If yes , can you make a video about how to do it for a 200 pound guy lol
Website dead.
+1
Your link doesnt work
Is there anything else before the number? for example RG 65 or H 65.
It's very difficult to find
Thanks for explaining the differences between the foams, i know what to look for when getting my bike seat done. Im in worcestershire uk, so will be looking for seat builders over here.
Excellent video. Where can I find that type of foam? I'm assuming it's open cell, right?
Curious what would Japanese motorcycle seat manufacturing use 30 weight?!
My stock seat on my bike feels like it's a 100 density, i swear cardboard has more dampening
Perfect video!!! Damn you don’t live in the Netherlands!! You could do my seat if you’d please
Great info for motorcycle seat building. Many thanks. 😊
Great video! What sort of thickness do you recommend? Cheers
Great info, at the right time. What is your preferred adhesive?
Are you still doing seats? If so how can I contact you?
Thank you. Very informative!
Interesting and a good point. Thanks.
Very informative. Thank you.
Will you be making any vids of seat building
I'm 250+ what in the blue hell is this dude talking about, he's American far more riders are 200+ people geez bro, acting like only a few people need high density foam !!!
The point of the information is that you only have a limited range of foam densities to work with, and memory foam does nothing to deal with energy absorption nomatter what weight is seated on the memory foam. Since a motorcycle seat is only 2-3 inches thick, you'll obviously be limited compared to what is available in automotive seats where the seat bottom foam can be 4-7 inches thick, allowing much more latitude in foam selection.
I'm 220lbs and use 1 inch of #95 density, 1 inch of #55 density, and 1/2" of #30 density with a slot down the middle of the 30 for tailbone relief.
If you're 250 lbs, you're going to be limited to trying 2 inches of #95 and 1 inch of 55 or 65, or some other combination of multi-density foam lamination.
A full seat of memory foam is equivalent to a solid #100 + density top to bottom.
The heavier you are, the less options you have for seat comfort when speaking of energy absorption. So that may explain why the information doesn't ring true for you. However, for those that are in the weight range that can be built to, using current foam technology, the results have been very positive.
@@JamesBarnhart ok where do you get the foam
Take metformin, stop eating sweets and cakes and halve the potatoes - you will loose weight as quickly as I did when I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
Thank you for that info
that's very interesting.
This was great. What does that density mean firmness or thickness?
Density is the firmness. How much it pushes back when applying force.
Thanks a lot
Thank you
best info i have got after having tailbone pain due to rides. Have to find them makers here in india 👍👍
Me too looking in Pune. You found anyone?
No am from chennai. Mostly they give u readymade ones and do not consider weight, etc.
cheers guy!
i was goin buy memory foam pillow which will be used for salvage and layer it on my motorcycle seat... that explained a lot..thanks
