  • Do the custom seats really help?
Most of the motorcycles on the market come with terrible stock seats, right? Of course, most of the owners immediately do something with the idea to improve their comfort. It might be a new expensive seat or some other solutions like gel pads, air hawk, or the old fashion sheep skin. Do they really help? In this video, I will tell you what I think about it

I have an airhawk type inflatable pad UNDER my mesh seat cover. The cover holds the airhawk in place , thus eliminating the problem of it shifting. Best of both worlds. I am loving it.

It’s not a good look to follow though! I follow some cyclists for much longer than I really should because they have such a beautiful bottom. Gel shorts are an abomination for my eyes as they ruin the spectacle! I admit that this may be the wrong point of view though. 😂

For long distance ridings, gel-pad shorts may be a temporary solution but

I refurbished the buddy seat on my XT660 as you did and that was (is) a major improvement in riding comfort both on and off-road. This summer when I was touring on hot days in France I got up on the foot pegs and was riding standing in small towns and villages to 'air' my lower body half. Worked well enough for me. Touring regionally I have no problems when I am in/on the saddle for one and a half hour. I keep this advice in back of my mind for next year on a major trip. I do not want to damage my well done saddle unnecessary.

Great Vid , as I am short I have got most of my last 8 bikes seats done ✅. Lowered and made more comfortable. The first time I brought a “ low comfort seat “ it was worse than the original. So instead of buying seats that MAY not work and pay a fortune for I done the following:
    1. I go to my local upholstery place ( as most upholstery places have done bike seats )
    2. Tell them what I require and they take cover off lower or raise seat out better and softer product over the top of other form - it’s all moulded in .
    3. I then take for a LONG test ride ( without the cover ) return and make any further changes.
    4. Seat is recovered and you have a seat designed just for you .

This is an interesting topic. In my experience I have also found that something that gives you some air between yourself and the seat works wonders. For many years I have had a road bike that I’ve been on very long trips with (8-10 000 km). I used to use a bead mat on it. It felt very… unspectacular. But it was still unspectacular after a week. And not painful. But it’s a bike for good roads, where you don’t stand up. And it had the same problem as you described with the AirHawk; it moved around a bit. Not a big problem if you have to sit all the time. Then I was introduced to the 3D mesh on a long trip in Australian outback. I’ve never looked back. I now own a Téneré 700 too, and one of the first things I did to it was to put on a 3D mesh. I live in a fairly varied climate in Norway, and what I find is that it’s invaluable not only on the (few) hot days, but also in the wet as I don’t sit in a puddle. My bottom actually stays dry when everything else is wet. I think the working principle here is: get some air between you and the seat. It prevents moisture build-up and is actually good for the skin. No more "monkey butt".

Great topic Pavlin, over the years tried custom seats from seat concepts, sheepskins and Air Hawks, which cost a small fortune, in 2018 I found the 3D mesh covers, and they are the easiest and most cost effective way to cushion your seat. Currently ride a T7 with the tall rally seat and a full 3D mesh cover.

(Did my ass get more sensitive, or did I just learn there are options?) As I got older, and could afford better equipment, I always, I mean always upgrade the saddle right from the get go. Seat concepts is the company my trials have proven is tops.

I have tried modifying the foam of my seat with some improvement. My buddy added a 1" thick new foam and a bigger cover he made that helped a lot. I finally put a steel tractor seat on my old GoldWing and it is very comfortable for long distances. It is horrible in town or traffic jams because it supports my legs and I can't touch the ground without sliding forward a lot. No padding at all. Large surface area.

If you have the time you can rebuild your own seat. I’ve now rebuilt seats on a DR650, KTM500, Suzuki Vstrom1000 and a KTM 690. I have a sewing machine so have made new seat covers but it is possible to use a single piece of vinyl and staple it on. The main problem with modern seats is that they all slope towards the tank and are not flat side to side. Perfect example is the T7. And forget about sorting out pillion seats on such bikes.

  • @myronhorvathsk
    @myronhorvathsk 6 місяців тому

Hi Pavlin. Good video on the seat topic. I’ve been riding for about 38 years and mostly my old Harley Heritage Softail. Quite comfortable, however now it should have some new foam. I had a DR650 for 4 years and I put a Seat Concepts onto it and that made a huge difference on it. But I never really went further on it than 2 hours. This spring I took delivery of my Africa Twin Adventure Sports and that has to be the worst seat of all the bikes I’ve owned over the years! I finally determined that the main problem was that with the forward slope of the seat and my being a skinny guy my tailbone was hitting the seat and causing very great discomfort. I was going on a trip this summer over 8000km and needed to do something with it or the trip would be unbearable. I got a AirHawk cushion and filled it to the max to get my tailbone off the seat, that made a huge improvement! But I think it could still be better. And as yourself it will move a bit when I’m standing up and sitting down or even getting on or off the bike. Over this winter I’m going to work on the seat myself, adding more dense foam on the rear portion and shape it to flatten and widen the rear portion of the seat where I sit all the time while riding and then make it step down and narrow up for when you have to stand coming to a stop. I just have to source the high density foam now. I have everything else I need and one of my hobbies is sewing, I have a large industrial sewing machine for making a new cover. I’m also going to do the pillion seat because it slopes forward also so that will be corrected too and then it will be recovered too so it looks right.

Where I used to live they had a bar with steel vented tractor seats for bar stools. Some people would sit all day on them.
I had a friend that rode with a leather saddle. The sweat absorbant material went under the saddle. It was suede on the top, but I think that was more for grip. Inexperienced riders would get saddle sore, but it was made for sitting on. An English saddle is more for jumping and standing.

3D mesh is worth it's weight in gold! As for custom seats, Who makes it and how they make it is more important than getting a "Custom Seat". Fortunately for me, there is an excellent custom fabricator about 120km from me. I had seen him and talked to him several times at various motorcycle events before I went to his shop, " Wild Ride Custom Seat Covers". where he took measurements and listened to what I was looking for. A couple weeks later I returned to pick it up. It was everything that I had hoped for and what he had promised. I have had expensive seats that were less comfortable then the stock seat.

I did a 1.600 km and a 7.500 km ride this summer using an air seat on my Rally Edition seat. The shorter ride was somehow OK but during the long ride I didn't felt comfortable. I adjusted the air pressure several times but no improvement.
After the return I went to a local specialist and he mentioned, that today's ADV seats are too small for a comfortable long ride. So I have now a slightly modified seat with more width and the next long ride will proof his saying.
I'm convinced about his expertise as 20+ years back I never had a seating issue on my BMW R 80 R and R 1100 GS. Both seats were wider and comfortable.

Sheep skin for me, used it for years with no problems, even on a 3 month trip across America / Canada, mainly offroading, when it got dusty / dirty wash it, comes out like new, if it rains either remove it, 10 seconds or cover it with a bag, in the real world there is no problem, just great comfort 👍

Just finished a 900km ride from Central Europe down to the Adriatic coast . Used a small RCA gel pad that works fine for me. This pad is for a lack of a better word "dry" ,not so sticky and soft like the others I've seen. I've packed an Air Hawk with me just in case, but didn't need to use it. Air Hawk helped me with another bike, but someway somehow I get a feeling it negatively affects the stability of the bike. No matter what you use, if the seat is shitty, nothing will work.If the seat is basically ok, all these improvements may help. Shame on bike manufacturers for not supplying great comfortable seats in the first place.

I guess this is similar to what coolcovers sells. I recently found out about them and was thinking to try it. It's just a bit expensive, around 80 eur or so. But I think it should help on long rides, to not stick that much to the saddle and move more easily on it.

An emotive subject Pavlin, rather like oil or tyres. There are too many variables and "one size does not fit all". Your mesh seat is probably the best, low cost fix as it allows air to flow to your "nether regions". I do agree that pads that attach to the seat are, usually, a very bad idea as they are prone to move at inappropriate times.
I have two motorcycles from different manufacturers. One, the stock seat is terrible. Very, very uncomfortable after 40 minutes I was in pain. The other, the stock seat is comfortable for about a couple of hours. I have changed both of them for properly manufactured gel seats from Top Sellerie, and the new seats are extremely comfortable, I highly recommend them. I do know others who have changed their seats and find the new ones uncomfortable. So, what is good for one person is not necessarily good for another. If you have a problem with your seat, try the mesh first before spending upwards of 250€ on a custom seat. Avoid the strap-on pads.

Anyone I know that uses Sheepskin covers, always removes them if they can before rain. That being said, it’s happened a few times where someone wasn’t able to get it off before it got soaked. I have tried it out of curiosity and it definitely makes a good difference. I stick with leather/synthetic seats as much as possible.

Gel is the worst. All the good seats are gel-free. Best seat ever is a Russell Day Long seat. It’s expensive and takes a long time to build though. Even the sport version is quite wide though so you know it’s there when the terrain gets technical off-road.

    Greetings from IstanbuL.
I have been using a 3D mesh in my seat for one year.
It has severeal benefits and I like it but unfortunately
it could not meet my comfort requirements compeletely.
So, I will need to visit an upholstery shop at forthcoming weeks
to create my seat from the zero point
with more comfortable shape and softer materials.
I will definetely continue to use my 3D mesh with my refurbished seat.

I understand you but I should anyway go to a upholster shop because there are some ripped parts in my seat cover.
Some naughty cats have ripped the seat cover and the filling sponge.
Even now, I am putting a thick rug on my seat to protect it from the cats in my autopark.
Also my motorbike is 2014 model and the seat materials have aged and deformed during this time.
Consequently; I should anyway go to an upholster for a serious repairing.
Instead of a reparing, I will make it refurbish.

my problem is with pressure on the ischial bones, the two protuding parts of the hip bone that contact the seat. In about half an hour or so, the tissue arround that part starts to get tingly and later it starts hurting. Installing bar risers helped a lot because as soon as I sit more upright, because of the reduced angle of the legs vs the torso, those bones retract a bit lets say and more support is given by the thighs and the gluteus muscles. My question is Pavlin, if you ever had discomfort in that area, did the 3D mesh helped with this particular problem? Or in short, did it help with removing pressure points ?

As a keen cyclist I can tell you that all these things which makes the seat soft are bad. The good seats are hard and they properly support the two seating bones. If you make the seat soft it's good only for short time and if you sit longer, it squish the soft tissues and makes a lot of problems with blood circulation. Most of the OEM bike seats are much better without these gel pads and similar things. The same is with the cycling seats - people buy these soft seats and thinks they are better but it's quite the opposite. I am not surprised the people do the same mistake with motorbike seats. :)
Mesh is probably good for air circulation but personally my ass is ok just with the OEM seats. :) Also some people are more sensitive than the others. Some cyclists can use brick as a seat, others are sensitive to a millimeter. :)
