I would try to bunker down in the mine to be honest. No one is walkign in the mine and once you unlock the dwarf's room, everything should be save! Also I would try to plant my stuff in the forest :D Plenty of dirt spots, there~ Or around the mountain river

I thought about that as well, but it's not very viable in this challenge imho, at least not in the beginning. The one with 100% rate is out of the question since its only craftable after buying a recipe from the island trader, and by that point you have access to the island farm anyways. The others you can craft for cheap, but only after level 4 and 7 farming respectively. You can get them from Pierre, but they are somewhat expensive, given the limits of the challenge. Long-term they won't be such a hassle, but considering the amount of money youre constantly spending at the start, it's prolly just better to buy more seeds and have to deal with watering. Not like you will be able to skip watering altogether anyways since they're not 100%. If you need the extra time to do a mine or skull cavern run or smth, you can just not water them for a day, the plants will simply take an extra day to grow.

Even if you only reference Gus' trash can, since the dishes you find in there reflect the saloon's daily special... It's not EVERY trash can that has hyperspecialized drops, but location definitely matters.
Waligug you could have tried to get Caroline's special quest to collect 100 ginger from ginger Island and then you get the solar panel which produces a battery pack every few days.
